Summary: ICQ channel 2 RTF messages: Smileys, fonts, status messages

Initial Comment:
Gaim v0.66, Linux (RedHat 8.0 & 9.0)

When I chat to people using ICQ the smilies that I send do not appear as icons
in their session, but as characters, i.e. :-)

The smilies I send appear as icons for me, as do the smilies my correspondents
use.

I've tried the ICQ Smilies theme, as well as the default and neither seems to
work. I've noticed this behaviour for the last couple of releases of Gaim.

Any ideas?

As we are closing this tracker, please submit any feature request that is
still valid to http://developer.pidgin.im. Thanks.

"Date Submitted: 2003-08-13":I can't believe it's been over 3 years and
nothing has changed since.

Why isn't this a higher priority? Away messages are a very useful if not
essential feature.

If you don't want to code all the RTF support for ICQ, at
least make ICQ away statuses working. Turn on a network
traffic sniffer and watch what is being sent when the
official icq client sends away message and copy it. Don't
bother with font size or font family. Just send out some
defaults. It can't be that difficult. Away statuses are
important!

I cannot believe it is still not possible to see my away
message in other icq clients ... that's a real downside of
Gaim ... :(

Status messages are also sent using RTF messages, I believe.

This is the fault of a lack of feature in Gaim. The
official ICQ clients send and receive smilies and emoticons
using RTF messages, which Gaim doesn't support. It probably
will at some point in the future, but it's really a pain to
do well.

The people I am corresponding with are using the (genuine)
ICQ client, so I suspect that there is not a problem at that
end. When I use that client everything works fine...

gaim is not mangling that text, so the bug must still be in
the other client.

I don't think so. Surely when I type :-) the ICQ client
should be able to realise that it is a smilie. It is the
same character string that is used by ICQ...

oh, i misunderstood this bug. yeah, your theme simply
implements smileys that don't exist anywhere outside of gaim.

That's their client's problem, not a gaim bug. Smileys are client
side features.

The smilies that are sent by the ICQ users do appear as
graphics.

When I use the ICQ theme even the emotiocons(?) [i.e.
*GIGGLING*] even come up as graphics. However mine don't
for the ICQ people. :-(

I've tried sending smilies as :-) and :) and neither seem to
work on the remote end.

when they send smilies to you, do you see the graphic? or is
it some odd text (for instance (s) might be a msn smiley
and i'm wondering if icq has moved to something similar)
