Summary: Wingaim crashes when iChat IMs from Mac OSX 10.4.5

Initial Comment:
This happens in all version of AIM, including 2.0.0
beta 2. When someone from a Mac running tiger IMs me
from iChat, it crashes Gaim consistantly. However, I
don't get the same results when Adium X 0.89 IMs me.
I've reproduced this on two Macs with many reinstalls
of Gaim on Windows. Here is the configuration on the
Mac that crashes Wingaim:

Mac OSX 10.4.5
iChat AV 3.1.4 (v432)
InstantMessage framework v427

By the way, there was no .RPT file created in the
installation directory, even though I was running the debug
version.

Summary: New conversation windows spawn underneath taskbar

Initial Comment:
Gaim version: 2.0.0beta2
Platform: Windows (XP)
Steps to Reproduce:
 1) Place taskbar on top of screen
 2) Start gaim
 3) Open new conversation window
Window now appears partially obscured by taskbar.

In windows, if the taskbar is placed at the top of the
screen, new conversation windows spawn at 0,0, which is
underneath the taskbar. This is actually more of an
issue with gtk on windows, but it would be nice if gaim
would work around this. It could be fixed (I believe)
by placing a call to gtk_window_set_position in gtconv.c:

Add (somewhere after gtk_window_new in GaimGtkWindow *
gaim_gtk_conv_window_new()):
gtk_window_set_position(GTK_WINDOW(win-window),
GTK_WIN_POS_CENTER);

This will position new windows in the center of the
screen. Possibly not what the desired outcome is, but
it would at least keep the window from being covered by
a taskbar on the top or left-hand side of the screen.

Summary: Windows, Dual Screen, 2.0.0Beta3

Initial Comment:
I am using a dual screen setup with windows xp ..
(radeon x800 gfx CATALYST® Version 06.5)
Is there a way to lock the windows, be it file transfer
windows, chat windows, or setup windows, to the main
monitor ? The problem for me is the fact that the
windows align in the top left corner of my second
monitor. The windows are located outside the screens
borders, so I cannot drag it into position. I have to
alt+space and move it that way. It's the same with all
my contacts, and with file transfer windows on each
individual contact when I open them. Even thoguh one is
moved, the next one will show outside the screen again.
I had some issues with this in previous versions of
gaim as well. I hope there is a way to remedy this.

btw, 2.0.0beta3 is much much better than 1.5.0 in
regards to the ICQ spamming issue. It also has a much
nicer feel to it. I would like to suggest you implement
a feature to easier select avatar from the buddy list.

Summary: gaim hangs every time a specific swedish key is pressed

Initial Comment:
Every time a specific key is pressed on a swedish
keyboard gaim always hangs.
The key is the one that is right next to Backspace on
the left (I don't know what it is called.)

The physical keyboard has a english (am) layout but I
have set it to use Swedish layout.
This only happens when the keyboard layout is set to
Swedish, when it is set to English it is OK.

Very often when I am supposed to hit Backspace key I
hit the wrong key and gaim will hang. This happens
several times a day for me and is quite annoying. And
when I forget I have the Swedish keyboard layout set
and try to do a = or + it will hang. I'd be very happy
if this was fixed :)

The machine that I am using where this is 100%
reproducable is a Windows 2003 Server Std Ed. I have
also seen it occur on Win XP Pro SP2 but it does not
happen every time.

I will add a screenshot of the Swedish keyboard layout
and mark which key I am talking about.

I see this in both 1.5 and 2.0.0 beta2.

When the hang occurs I do not see anything being printed in

This will most likely be a GTK+ bug.

Can you, perhaps, install GIMP (http://gimp-win.sf.net) (be
sure *not* to install GTK+ 2.8.x) and see if this also
happens when entering text there?

Also, if you start gaim in debug mode (using the -d
argument), does anything appear in the debug window when it
hangs?

Summary: Strange Window Placement on Multiple Monitors

Initial Comment:
I am running 2.0.0 beta 3 on Windows XP using multiple
monitors. The new message window always pops up on the
secondary monitor and above the real window area.
The primary monitor is 19-inch and the secondary is
15-inch placed to the left of the primary monitor.
Gaim seems to pop up the message window where the
top-left-most edge of the screen would be if I had two
19-inch monitors. Other applications do this too, but
not as often as Gaim with the apparent lack of
remembering where your last window was placed. I'm not
sure if this is a Windows issue or a Gaim issue, just
an annoyance for a very small percentage of users, I'm
sure. Thanks for everyone's great work on Gaim!

There is a very large status button at the bottom of

window is along the bottom of my display clicking on
the status button reveals a large section of empty
space and all the relevant tasks below it (offscreen).
If I scroll the mouse downward the relevant tasks move
into the empty space and then there is no problem.
Also, if the window is not touching the floor of my
display (and is approximately the same distance away as
the height of the blank space) then the relevant
actions display fine and there is no problem.

Summary: PANGO Causes crash in wingaim-iChat conversations.

Initial Comment:
Windows Runtime Error:
Pango-ERROR **: file shape.c: line 75 (pango_shape):
assertion failed: (glyphs-num_glyphs 0)

After more testing I've found that I can reproduce
this bug only in IMs that are between my WinXP PC
(wingaim2beta2) and a mac (iChat). I'm using the AIM
protocol, updated gtk

Situation 1:
Logging enabled, HTML format (from the previous
conversation, irrelevant at actual load time)
Show format on incoming messages enabled (from the
previous conversation, irrelevant at actual load time)
History plugin turned on

These settings will cause it to crash the moment a
chat window is opened with that person if a previous
conversation was saved in the logs. This is presumably
while trying to load the html log file. I've attached
an example html file that causes a crash for me if
loaded from history.

Situation 2:
Show format on incoming messages enabled

Crashes upon the receipt of a message from a mac user,
regardless of what they're saying, if history is
enabled or disabled, or logging is enabled or
disabled. The message still makes it into the logs,
formatted. It also manages to send auto-replies before
the rendering is finished and the problem is
encountered (they also appear in the chat logs).
Example of that is attached as well. This situation is
not universal though, at times it works and I can't
seem to isolate the exact cause.

I'm hoping somebody can confirm that this results in a
crash for them as well.

2006-03-04.161253.html - crash from logs (1)
2006-03-05.233450.html - crash on receipt (2)

(See also Bug 1365939 for the relevant backtrace. I
was unable to post the file attachments I wanted to
there and it was also categorized as gaim 1.5, this is
still present in 2beta2.)

Summary: Error Loading Gaim

Initial Comment:
I recently installed Gaim using install file gaim-
1.1.2.exe. The install went fine with Gaim and GTK
programs. I am using Windows XP Home with SP2. All of
my updates are installed for windows. A friend of mine is
using the same platform, but he couldn't install GTK. He
does not recieve the error message that I get when
loading the program. As soon as I open the program, I
get an error message, (screenshot attached), that
says There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk
into drive \device\harddisk4\dr6. I only have 1 hard
drive partitioned to 2 logical drives. I tried re-installing
over the program, and then I un-installed and re-
installed again. Still the same error. If I click Continue
it lets me into the program with no problem. How can
we get rid of that annoying error? Great program
anyway!!! Great idea!

The 'fix' plugin by by datallah does not help me. My
secondary monitor is OFF most of the time and new windows
open inside the secondary monitor even with this fix. Is
there a way to get gaim NOT to use the second monitor at
all. Or the initial window to open at top right instead of
top left. This is most annoying. For now im just hitting
MOVE everytime I get a chat request.

A similar thing happens to me. I run multiple monitors at
different resolutions. My secondary monitor is on the left
with a smaller resolution than my right hand monitor. The
desktops are aligned at the bottom so there is some 'dead
space' above the second monitor on the left. As GAIM trys
to put message windows at the top left of the screen they go
straight into this dead space and you can't see them. I can
only get to them by right clicking on their taskbar entry
and selecting 'move' and using the cursor keys to move them
down.

Anyone know a work around for this?

gaim.exe - No Disk

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk

Cancel/Try Again/Continue

Clicking try again gets the window back again. Clicking
either Cancel or Continue allows the program to run as
it always

I did swap out my HD and reinstall windows, and this is
the first build of gaim installed
since then, as I was running 1.1.1 before I swapped out
the HD.

This seems to happen to me on any Windows machine using

click the link and the ALT text box of the true URL
displays on the screen while my web browser opens. It

Summary: No caret in IM Send window

Initial Comment:
I am a brand new user of Gaim. I just downloaded ver
1.1.1 for Windows (I'm running on Win2K), and
registered my ICQ account.

I IM'd someone on my buddy list and ran into this bug,
namely that no text position caret showed in the send
text box control. The characters I typed showed up fine.

I just noticed that I get a caret after typing some
characters, however that was not happening before.

It seems that there is never a caret in an empty send
textbox (I expect one when I activate the control by
clicking in it, so I know where the next thing I type
will go).

However once the IM window has been minimized and
restored, it seems that a caret will appear once
something is typed in the send textbox.

There also appear to be issues with the wrong mouse
cursor displaying (ie it's a I bar over the menu and an
arrow over the conversation text) but that should be
another bug.

When ever im typing in gaim with my text red and the

background to be black. If for example I type test

I am having a smiliar problem with my program. It only
happens in my program if I apply tags from within a
changed signal of GtkTextBuffer. It works fine if I apply
the tags somewhere else. Just wanted to give a heads-up in
case it's the same problem. (If it is, you should add a
comment to the gtk bug indicating that it's due to the text
changed callback)

I'm suspecting gtk as well. But as it is, I can't seem to
find another gtk app that applies a tag with background

still wasn't consistent.

Initial Comment:
I have Gaim 1.1.0 for Windows, running on Windows XP,
SP2. When I open the program a box pops up
saying gaim.exe - No Disk. It reads: There is no
disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive
\Device\Harddisk4\DR5. There are three buttons below
labeled Cancel, Try Again and Continue. If I X out
or press Cancel or Continue, Gaim opens normally. If I
press Try Again the box reappears. This pop-up does
not prevent me from opening the program, but it
happens every time and is extremely irritating.
I searched the Bugs list and found a reference to others
with this problem, including one tied to version 0.81
marked as a duplicate of 1001597, but can't find
#1001597 to see what the solution is.

It turns out that the gtk bug is well known - for some reason,
gtk tries to read your I: disk. If you have one of those
memory stick readers, it will be mapped as 4 different drive
letters under XP - check to see if this is your problem by
going into control panel. Look at the entry for Portable
Media Devices. If you have one of those assigned to I:, that
is the problem.

It is simple to fix. Open a command window (or bash or ksh).

run the

diskpart

command.

At the prompt (diskpart has internal prompts) type

list volume

Figure out which number is being assigned to i: and

select volume n

where n is the number of that volume.

assign letter=j

(or any other drive letter you want to change the device that
was at i: to. It shuld be unused.)

Finally, chweck your work with

list volume

and then

exit.

There is a gui way to do this to - for a complete explanation,
use the windows help system, search for drve letter and
look for the article titled Assign, change or remove a drive
letter.

Good luck, and completely offsite backup your windows
system before reinstalling - and then do this. :-)

I've now added a USB printer which includes a built-in card
reader, besides the other card reader. So now I have to
cancel twice - apparently it is checking both devices to see
if there are cards in any slots. I'm now on gaim 1.1.4 with
the gtk version bundled with it; the problem has remained
with each release.

I was now able to find/read #1001597. I do have an external

So if I understand, either gaim or gtk is trying to read
something in each drive at startup, and produces this
message when it hits a drive without any media.

This would be a GTK bug. The window is created and set to be
non-resizable, so it should automatically not have the
maximize functionality enabled.

Summary: Pop ups do not disappear in windows

Initial Comment:
Running Gaim 1.2.1 on Windows XP SP2 (and this bug
existed in 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 as well), pop up windows
(such as the user information pop up on the buddy
list), and the tool tabs on the actual im window (send
file, send, remove, enlarge/shrink font, etc),
sometimes do not disappear in windows. I have run both
the included GTK 2.6.2 rev a, as well as a GTK 2.6.4
installer I found for Gaim.

This error does not crash gaim for me to provide you
with a backtrace.

The GTK 2.6.4 seemed to make it harder for the popups
to not appear, but they still do. Once a pop up has
appeared, the only way to get rid of it is to move the
mouse back over the button/buddy that caused it to
appear. Doing so will clear the popup.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Install windows gaim.
2) move mouse over buddy list until just before popup
appears
3) alt tab to a non-minimized/maximized window that
does not overlap the buddy list.
4) popup will appear, you will tab to the new program
and the popup will stick.

If it doesn't happen, keep trying. You need to get the
timing right.

Keep in mind, this is not the only way you can get the
pop-up to stay, it's just the easiest I know of to
reproduce. There are many scenarios that can get it to
happen.

Windows XP Professional
Dual Intel Xeon 2.8
Nvidia quadro

Also, this issue exists on every windows box I've seen,
which is roughly 100 in the office (using different
install images)... so it's not just a corrupted thing
on my box.

If you need more info, feel free to let me know. I
would be willing to help in almost any way, including
working with a developer to test to see if the issue is
fixed for them. Just let me know how I can help.

When you type blue or red into the color name text

Summary: Win-Gaim induces Windows \No Disk\ error.

Initial Comment:
I have a computer with two installations of MS Windows
on it. (One partition with WinXP Home Edition, and one
with XP Professional.) Home Edition was installed
first and thus gets the C: Drive letter. When XP Pro
was installed, it's root directory is labeled D:. I
have a feeling this is the source of this error, but
the debug log doesn't really hint to this explicitly,
nor do I have the expertise to confirm this by another
means.

Anyway, when booted with XP Professional, when Win-Gaim
starts, the user gets Windows - No Disk: There is no
disk in the drive. Please insert a disk in drive .
Note the space after drive and before the period. I
suppose the error message must be designed to display
the pertinent drive letter, but no letter was passed to
the error display function. (i.e. - It probably looks
like ...please insert a disk in drive %1.) The error
dialog has three buttons, Cancel. Try Again, and
Continue. Try Again just yields the error again,
but both Cancel, and Continue close the error
dialog and allow the Win-Gaim Login dialog to display
and Win-Gaim's operation from there on is normal. You
can see a screen shot of the error dialog at
http://locker.uky.edu/~jkiff2/windows_-_no_disk.png

I've attached the debug log produced by gaim.exe -d.
Note that I used find-and-replace to subsitute
personally identifiable information (screen names,
windows user names, etc) in the log with generics as I
realize this is a public forum. If I've over-done it
and the log is less useful, please request an unaltered
copy of the log by emailing me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks. ^_^

This is a GTK+ bug. It has been fixed upstream, but a new
version of atk (one of the components of GTK+) has not been
released yet (when that happens, this bug will go away).

This is triggered by having (some sorts of) removable media
(e.g. memory card reader) mapped to your i: drive, you can
avoid it by not using the i: mapping.

the cursor over the affected buddies to refresh the
status. It would be really nice if this bug was fixed :)

Keep up the good work!

I have a externam hd on drive letter E:, and a thumb

error list says you get if you have a removable drive
in I:, No disk in drive D:, whenever i send a

it stopped eventhough i removed the disk later. I know
this bug is already know, but i just though you'd like

i am running windows XP tablet edition. I haven't
checked the gtk of gaim versions, but it is the newest

know you don't support other versions of Gaim, but this
is a problem with GTK, right?)

Gaim crashes when I select various fonts. Specific
example is V-Dub ( http://irc.projectjj.com/VDUB.TTF ).

Don't really want to use the fonts that causes crashes
for Gaim anyways, but it does make browsing fonts annoying.

Even if it is a bad font, it should cause Pango to crash.

Don't think it's a pango issue. Think it's a bad font.
Selecting this font in both xfontsel and gtkfontsel, cause
them to crash. Haven't had a chance to test on win32, but
I'd imagine that it would have the same effect on any win32
GTK app.

Summary: Issue with pop-up tooltips (they didnt disapear)

Initial Comment:
Greets

Using the lastest GAIM version 1.3.1, there is a issue
with the pop-ups tooltips, like the information of the
buddyes and others.
Basically they didn't disapear when the window focus
changes.

As an easy way to reproduce the bug, you can put the
mouse over any buddy and wait till the tooltip apears,
then double click in the buddy to open the
conversation window, and the tooltip will be fixed
over the conversation window. To disapear the buddy
tooltip just go back to buddy list and move the mouse :).

Im using windows XP service Pack 2, (just to prove and
promote the GTK and GNOME software ports).

Also there's a screenshot of the bug :).

Thank for your time and your work.

Juan Pablo Oyarzun, jpo :)

Summary: Message window position is wrong

Initial Comment:
I have dual monitors. My left monitor is smaller and lower down than my other
monitor. When I open a new message window in Gaim, it always opens in the top
left corner. Which would be ok if the top left corner existed on that monitor.
It is reading the y coordinate based on the total desktop height. My left
monitor is 1280x1024. My main monitor is 1900x1200. So the window is created
at 0,0 based on the 1200 height, with the first 176 pixels off screen. To get
the window somewhere I can use it I have to right-click the task in the
taskbar, choose move, hit the arrow key once to grab the window, then I can
move it and place it with my mouse.

The ideal behavior would be for Gaim to remember the last used window position
and reappear there. The next most ideal would be a sanity check when the
window is created to make sure that it is not appearing off screen on a dual
monitor system. This was not a problem with Gaim 1.5, this is a new bug
specific with 2.0 beta 1.

I've had almost the same problem since day 1. I have a 3
monitor system, I use the center window as my main work
screen, the left one for reference and bittorrent, etc...
and the right one for IM and web browsing. I have Gaim
running to the far right on the right monitor. When I open
a conversation window, it opens at the upper left corner of
the center screen. I drag it to the upper left of the right
screen. If I close the window, and reopen, Gaim (or GTK+)
doesn't remember the past position and opens under my work
on the main screen.

Summary: Popup description of buddy won\'t go away

Initial Comment:
When moving over a buddy the buddy info popup appears.
If you double click the buddy and the chat window
appears under your cursor then the popup won't
disappear. It requires you move focus to the buddy
list. The popup stays up over the chat window in the
way until you do this focus change. It should disappear
after a given time whether the window has focus or not.

To reproduce position you buddy list so that when you
double click a buddy the chat window appear over the
buddy and the popup. The popup will be on top of the
chat window and clicking it won't make it go away.

Summary: Annoying tooltip that doesn\'t dissapear like it should

Initial Comment:
When you put your mouse over a buddy, gaim pops up a
little information window. If you doubleclick on the
buddy, it opens up an IM tab, closes the information
window, and then reopens it. The information window
stays on top of everything, even when you switch to a
different window.

Additionally, it does not dissapear. The only way to
get rid of it is to open the buddy list window back up
and quickly put your mouse over one of your buddies.

The window should go away if:
you are not hovering your mouse over their icon

else if:

it has been more than 5 seconds

or something along those lines

Summary: Focus problem on Win32

Initial Comment:
I'm using the latest Gaim v1.0.0 with an updated GTK
on a Windows 2000 machine.

When using AOLs IM:

On the Buddy List window I click on a Buddy, and the
second window comes-up. There is no default focus to the
lower TextArea. Even if I place the curser there and
click, nothing.. No focus at all. The only way I've
found to get it to get focus is to hit the Font Face
button, hit OK on the
dialog and THEN it gets focus.

If a Buddy sends me a message, which opens the second
window, it gets focus fine.

This same thing was happening on the previous version
.8? I was using.

Everything else seems okay.

It would be great if you could fix this issue.

Thanks,

Joe Siebenmann

This may be the bug regarding the cursor not showing up,
which is a GTK bug. In that case, you can still type, but
you cannot see where the cursor is.

Please check whether this is the case.

This problem appears to be a GTK problem related to
removable storage devices, such as a digital camera, memory
stick, or similar device.

Try removing and disabling any of those device before
starting gaim, as a workaround.

This bug has been previously reported, but I can't seem to
find it.

Summary: Incorrect Error Message. (gaim 1.0.0)

Initial Comment:
Whenever I start gaim up after installing it, it runs fine
(on the first run).

Every time I open the program afterwards I would get
the following error:

gaim.exe - No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into
drive \Device\Harddisk4\DR7.

My options are cancel, try again, or continue. cancel or
continue make it load as usual. try again just brings up
the same message again and again until I clock one of
the other two.

This stayed after a reformat and reinstall of windows
(which I performed when I got a new, third, HDD).

I am using windows XP, SP2 (although I beleive I even
had it with SP1).

It has existed for the past 5 or so versions of giam, but I
recall a time when it wasnt there.

I have 3 harddrives, all formated as FAT32 partitions.
Windows is installed on a 20 gig drive. C:
D: is 160GB
E: is 160GB

I tried installing gaim on C or on D and it didnt matter.

So opening the computer up isnt a solution (yea, i thought of

I don't have a removeable device.
WinXP misrecognizes my built in USB as a removeable device.
And I have an internal digital card reader (the type used in
cameras), the bays of which are considered by windows as
removeable HDDs.

Those are all built in. So I cannot remove them.

Initial Comment:
The conversation window does not refresh properly, when
it is obscured by more than one window (causing a
complex cliplist on the window, such as an L shape).

Proper fix is to loop over all clip rectangles and
refresh each of them, it looks like gaim only refreshes
the first one.

Interesting, it is well known that if you have certain
removeable devices gaim will mistake them for a disconnected
HDD and try looking there first for some reason (even though
this isnt where you installed it), I have been asking for
this to be fixed for ages. Since it does this for all 4 of
my internal card readers.

Did you add any other new peripherals?

Try disconnecting some random peripherals of any kind (but
especially storage) to see if you can find exactly which
device is causing this.

Typing icon in the conversation window still has that
extra pixel, as reported in the patch 958897. Version
of gaim is 0.82.1. OS is Slackware Linux 9.1.

This is the version of gaim I compiled myself, with
configure options: --prefix=/usr
--without-startup-notification --with-dynamic-prpls=yahoo

I haven't tried pre-compiled versions of gaim.

Summary: Bad conversation window position with top-of-screen taskbar

Initial Comment:
Running WinXP SP2, When a new conversation window is
opened while the windows taskbar is at the top of the
screen, the Conversation Window's title bar is stuck
underneath the taskbar, and cannot be reached to move
it.

The conversation window jumps to the correct position,
fully underneath the taskbar when the taskbar is
resized or moved away, and then back to the top of the
screen. The window position also correct itself when
the buddy list window is docked or undocked from what
is was when the conversation window was opened.

Right clicking on the task in the taskbar, and using
the movement and max/min commands do not produce an
adequate solution - the movement command does not work
because the window titlebar cannot be clicked, and
doing a minimize / maximize / restore still results in
the titlebar being trapped under the taskbar.

This bug occurs using both the Windows Classic visual
style, as well as the Windows XP visual style. I also
tested with a custom theme, with the same results.

Summary: Initial Windows Misplacement

Initial Comment:
I just downloaded and isntalled gaim v1.1.2 onto a dell
optiplex running windows XP. The system uses a dual
screen configuration and because the secondary screen
is elevated, there is a screen offset (the second right
screen is perhaps one foot vertically displaced from
the primary left side monitor). The two monitors run an
extended desktop.

In both v1.0.1 and v1.1.2 gaim will start initial IM
windows above the primary left screen where the mouse
can not reach to pull them down. If the left monitor is
setup so that there is no displacement, the IM window
appears within the primary left screen. Bascially it
seems like the IM window's initial placement is
tracking to the highest highest point, which is the
right screen, and the left most point, which is the
left screen. But due to the vertical difference between
these two points, the window is being placed out of
bounds of the desktop.

The window can still be moved into the desktop by right
clicking on its tab in the task bar and selecting move,
then using the arrow key to drag it all the way to a
viewable area, however since there is no memory
placement, each new IM window will always be off screen.

I did a second test where I made the left monitor the
higher of the two and found the newly opened IM
window appears fine in the upper left hand corner of
the primary screen.

On a side note, accessing a user's info does not have
this issue. It appears fine in the primary left screen
no matter the displacement.

Summary: Prefs: Change Status to dropdown i

Initial Comment:
In the Preferences on the Away/Idle tab when one clicks
the Change status to: dropdown box it is empty but
still renders all funny as it tries to expand with
nothing in it.

By no means is this an urgent matter, just a little UI
glitch.

My estimate is that this is due to the fact I have no
custom away messages stored.

This is not a Gaim bug, but a bug in GTK+, the widget toolkit
used by Gaim. Your bug is being moved to our gtk bugs tracker,
where it will be grouped with similar bugs. When we know a gtk
bug number for this issue, your group number will reflect it.

Summary: Buddy List - Mouseover User bubble Glitch (view screenshot)

Initial Comment:
When you hold your mouse over a user on your MSN Buddy
List, I have been having issues, when switching
windows, that sometimes, the bubble remains on the
screen, and doesnt go away. Its very annoying, because
it means i have to ALT + Tab back to the buddy list,
when it happens, to get rid of it.

I have no idea what the problem is (im no c0d3r :) )
but yeah, its annoying. I love GAIM, I hope this is
fixed in one of the next releases. Sorry i didnt
screenshot when it happened, but it happens often, so
I'll screenshot next time!

Thanks

the related gtk bug ;-)

that isnt because of the msn thing, its a GTK issue since
before version 1.0... it does that for ALL the popup
bubbles, aim info, msn, all of them...

I really wish it was fixed.

GAIM 1.0.1-debug on windows 2000 pro SP4

I have the systray plugin active and the buddy list
windows closed. I right click on the GAIM icon in the
systray and the menu appears. I don't select anything
in it, but go work with the FireFox window that is on
my desktop. Even after clicking and typing into the
FireFox window, the GAIM menu is still displayed.
It is still there while I am typing this report. I can
go and select an item in it and it will work.

Same with 1.0.2. The only way to get the systray menu to
disappear is to actually select one of the menu items.

I have also seen cases where the systray menu will unfold
*below* the taskbar level (off the bottom of the screen)...

Summary: Tooltips right click menus don\'t go away!

Initial Comment:
I don't know if this is a GTK issue or Gaim, but it
deserves looking into:

Platform: Windows XP
Gaim Version: All that I have used (.60 - 1.12)
GTK Version: 2.4.X

Problem #1: When right clicking on the system tray
icon, a menu of options comes up. If you do NOT click
on one of these options, it does not go away.

Problem #2: When clicking on links in a message
window, a tooltip for that link pops up immediately.
This tooltip really has no function (that i can see)
other than telling you what link you are hovering over
(maybe people can spoof links?) Anyways, when you
click a link, the tooltip stays on the forefront, even
in front of the browser. Clicking on it to remove it
sends focus back to Gaim.

Mostly just annoying; not really flaws.

Anyways, I'm currently studying programming and thought
of some solutions (I'll check back in a few months,
after school is done and maybe contribute some fixes):

Solution #1: When the program loses focus, close the
relevant menu/tooltip. Not really sure how to program
this, but I'm sure its an option.

Solution #2: Make tooltips in message windows pop up
after 2-3 seconds, instead of as soon as the mouse
stops moving.

This is almost certainly a GTK+ bug.

It is very similar to another bug I've seen (and may
actually be the same thing).

I'm interested to know about your graphics setup - is there
anything unusual about your system? What resolution and
color depth are you using? Are you using some sort of
virtual desktop software? Are you using any graphics utilities?

Hi.
I am using gaim version 1.5.0 for win32.
For several versions I have noticed one thing that I
consider to be a bug.
I use MSN through Gaim and when I click one person's
name a conversation window pops up, but together with
it, there's a little description of the user, on the
screen. It gets stuck and just disappear if I move the
mouse through the gaim main window.

Could you possibly chjeck this out?
I think this is a pain in the ass for many people and
it really bugs me!

Thank youuu,
Hugo

Running Gaim 1.5.0 on Windows XP.

I just updated GTK+ from version 2.6.9a to 2.6.10a.
Upon running Gaim, I no longer have a theme installed

I highly suggest that the theme selection for GTK be
included with new builds of GTK and not with Gaim.

N.B. Sometimes the same thing happens without trying
to join a chat room, just if you leave gaim logged into
jabber for a while without doing anything.

I have no idea what is going on with your stack trace. I'm
re-assigining this to Herman, in case he knows what the
icm32.dll problem is.

Sorry, my last comment was inaccurate - it was an MSN
account that I used to have, not an AIM account. Never had
one of those, so your guess about what that's doing in the
stack trace is as good as mine!

You're right about the stack trace - but my description of the
steps to reproduce is accurate.
I just tried uninstalling and reinstalling gaim-debug and
repeating the above steps. I got a crash at the same point,
with this stack trace:

Currently gaim is set up with only a jabber account. The very
first time I installed, I did also set up an AIM account - but I
then got rid of that to eliminate it as a source of the error. I
can't find any trace of it in the registry.
Let me know if I should try anything else.

There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk

Looks like this might be the same as 1081893. I do have a

that this is the same issue.

After more testing I've found that I can reproduce this bug
only in IMs that are between my WinXP PC (wingaim2beta2)
and a mac (iChat). I'm using the AIM protocol.

Settings 1:
Logging enabled, HTML format (from the previous
conversation, irrelevant at actual load time)
Show format on incoming messages enabled (from the previous
conversation, irrelevant at actual load time)
History plugin turned on

These settings will cause it to crash the moment a chat
window is opened with that person if a previous
conversation was saved in the logs. This is presumably
while trying to load the html log file. I've attached an
example html file that causes a crash for me if loaded from
history.

Settings 2:
Show format on incoming messages enabled

Initial Comment:
Hi

In windows version of gaim, sometimes when you move
the mouse over a buddy and away from it, that
particular screen name gets struck floating there
even when gaim is minimised to the system tray.

You will have to move back to the buddy list over the
name to make it disappear again. It seems to occur very
randomly and I am not able to reproduce the behaviour
with any specific patterns.

I would try and get a screenshot next time

as a work around, edit prefs.xml in a text editor, find the

Initial Comment:
In response to bug 1106885:

Pop-up menus disappear behind buddy list
I am using Windows XP Professional and Gaim 1.1.2.
After right-clicking anything on a docked buddy list,
the list of options that pops up often falls behind
the buddy list and cannot be seen. I do not encounter
this problem when the buddy list is not docked. Having
a window open and maximized from a different program
seems to prevent this from happening. This only
started occuring after upgrading to Gaim 1.1.2.

You guys offered the fix:
 Date: 2005-01-22 17:33
 Sender: datallahSourceForge.net Subscriber

 user_id=325843

This has been fixed in CVS.
You can test the fix by replacing the winprefs.dll in
your
 gaim\plugins directory with this one:
 http://www.butfer.com/gaim-patches/winprefs.dll

This file fixed the bug, but it caused another one.
This isn't much of a bug, just an annoyance. When Gaim
is launched, Windows spits back a No Disk error (see
image) reading There is no disk in the drive. Please
insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk4\DR9.
Clicking Continue or Cancel launches Gaim without a
hitch, and Try Again effectively does nothing.

Gaim 1.1.2, GTK+ 2.4.13, Windows XP SP2

This is unrelated to the fix for 1106885. This is a GTK
bug, it is triggered by external storage devices, e.g.
all-in-one memory readers, zip drives, etc.

Initial Comment:
When you keep your mouse over a certain screen name, it
will give you the buddy status (screen name, warning
level, idle time) a lot of the time (several times a
day) that status will stay on your screen even when the
buddy list is no longer on your screen. The only way
to get rid of it is to re-click on your buddy list and
it goes away. Once you are not focused on that window
anymore, it should go away.

Initial Comment:
Under Win32, any tooltip displayed in any gaim window
(IM window, smiley toolbar, etc) brings the buddy list
window to the front, obscuring non-gaim windows as well.

Reproduce:

Place another window (gaim or another app) over the
buddy list; open an IM window; hover over a button
until a tooltip appears.

Observed in 1.2.0, 1.2.1

Summary: cosmetic issue

Initial Comment:
I would like to report a cosmetic issue. I am using
windows xp version of gaim v1.1.0. I have also
downloaded v1.1.1 and it does the same thing.

When you put your mouse over a user in your buddy list
it shows a yellowish box with there name, logged in,
capabilities.

Well this box seems to get stuck on the screen
sometimes. It doesnt remove itself like it should.
The only way i could duplicate the error was by:

Open buddy listmove your mouse over the username and
click once with the right mouse button after you click
just move your mouse away from the name. The box stays
on the screen even if you tab to a new window.

It does it other times but I dont know what casues it.
I think its related. I kinda like the features and
dont want to turn it off. I never even really looked
for a way to turn it off in the PREF. Any chance you
guys can fix it?

thx
Ryan

I'm experiencing the same 'bug', -- not sure if it's a
problem with Gaim or an issue relating to how the Windows
GUI supports GTK+ -- using Windows XP Home Edition SP2
(v5.1) with GTK+2.4.14 for Win32, running Gaim v.1.1.1 for
Win32.

I can recreate this error by double clicking on a 'buddy',
to bring up a IM window. Whether I move my cursor or not, as
long as it doesn't cross the buddy list window (focused or
not), I will get that 'buddy' info pop-up displayed on my
screen where my cursor is currently.

As well, I've tried the extprefs plug-in suggested above and
changed the delay to 2500 ms. I still get the same issue, as
long as I my cursor doesn't cross the buddy list window.

Not a terribly important bug, but I do agree with Ryan, it
get's quite annoying, very fast.

Cheers and keep up the good work,

Jonathan

GTK Bug #107320

You can work around it using Tooltip Reveal Delay in the
plugin from http://gaim-extprefs.sf.net/.

When logged in at MSN network using GAIM you get a
yellow info box when the mouse stay's on a name in the
list. When you double-click at that moment a chat
screen comes up, but that yellow info-box stay's on top
of the chat screen. The only way to get it (the infobox
that is) removed is to close the chatscreen and open it
again.

Summary: New conversation windows always open behind taskbar in winxp

Initial Comment:
Gaim 1.01
OS: WinXP Pro SP2

New converstaion windows are always created at the top
left of the screen. If the taskbar is on the top of
the screen, the new window is placed behind it. This
makes it much harder to move and is generally very
annoying.

I reported this as a bug because this behavior only occurs
in later versions of gaim. The earlier ones either
remembered the location, or opened the windows somewhere in
the middle of the screen.

As I recall version 1.0 back to when I started using gaim on
windows (about 0.7x), was ok.

When a program creates multiple windows without a given
position, Windows positions each window in a cascading
order. The topmost window is at the top left corner of the
visible area, the screen minus the taskbar. It does this
even if the taskbar is on the left or on top of the screen.
(I'm observing this on Win98, but I doubt this has changed
at all in XP/2000.)

Notepad (on Win98) creates windows that cascade. Buddy
pounce popups and Get Info windows also cascade correctly;
none of these open underneath a taskbar placed at the top of
the screen.

It looks like Gaim or GTK is telling Windows to always
position new conversation/chat windows at (0,0) (top left
corner) of the screen. It doesn't cascade and it doesn't
take into account the visible area. Assuming Gaim is calling
the correct GTK function correctly, this means this is a GTK
bug.

This could be related to the multiple monitors GTK bug
(conversation windows placed at the top left of the total
screen resolution, physically offscreen); I don't know
enough to say for sure.

Some people have suggested saving the conversation window
position as a solution to this bug. I think getting the
windows to cascade properly in the visible area should be
the solution. If people still want the position saved, they
should find the RFE for that and add a comment.

A workaround for now (and this applies to all software that
places resizable windows underneath the taskbar when it is
at the top, in XP and 2k): click once anywhere on the
window's border. This makes Windows resize the window such
that about 4 pixels of the title bar become visible below
the taskbar, and you can then drag the window out from under
the taskbar.

(this one is filed away in the someone needs to borrow a
Mac dept., along with being able to windowshade (for rapid
visual access to the window below) and being able to move
and operate inactive windows by holding a key down. I'm not
blaming any gaim devels for this one though, of course)

Summary: Off-screen IM window with dual display

Initial Comment:
I have a dual monitor setup (laptop screen on left and
normal monitor on right). The displays are different
sizes and have different heights. The right display is
larger and extends both above and below the smaller
left display. I setup the screen resolutions so
everything is the same size and set the physical
arrangement (display properties - settings) to make
make the mouse slide over naturally...

It seems that the new window pops up above the top of
the left display. I suspect that it's using the top of
the right display as the top of the left display.

It would be even better if gaim was able to remember the

Double clicking on a buddy in the buddy list will bring
up the buddy window then the yellow box with user
details will appear over the top of the chat window
where ever the mouse is at the time. The yellow box is
persistant and will not go away. This bug has been in
every version of Gaim I have ever used and is still
present in 1.5.0. It only works if the chat box appears
over the top of the buddy list or in the case of a
maximised chat box.

Summary: Another gaim freeze and then crash

Initial Comment:
At my slow PC I was clicking around a little and that's
when it happened. To be more precise I opened up the
Privacy window and clicked the Add button, then
switched back to the Privacy window and closed the Add
window (as far as I remember). Anyway.. the clicks were
faster than this slow GTK can manage and then it almost
froze (windows were repainted only every now and then)
and it all finished with a crash.

I would also like to say that imho gaim GUI should be
rewritten in something better, faster and well ported
to other platforms (the newest version of GTK maybe -
but iI think it will only negatively affect the speed)
(what about a window manager and things that go with it
that are used on mobile phones or sth) (one idea is
also to recode the whole gaim into Java - it would be
portable, creating custom GUIs is kinda easy there, but
imho it would negatively effect the speed of many other
operations that are now better realized in C). Hm, it
looks like I will have to test how fast gaim works in a
native *nix enviroment before presenting further ideas.

(gaim-2.0.0beta1-debug with GTK that comes with the
gaim-2.0.0beta1 release, Windows XP SP2)
