Founded in 1988, WomenAid International is a humanitarian aid and development agency that promotes all rights for all people in all countries. WomenAid has been implementing anti-trafficking 'prevention and protection' projects in the Caucasus region where the agency has worked since 1993. The GLOBAL ANTI-TRAFFICKING INFOCALENDAR aims to assist all involved in counter-trafficking efforts by facilitating the dissemination of information on global activities to combat the trafficking of human beings. We hope you will find this information service helpful. Trafficking of human beings is the second largest and fastest growing criminal activity in the world and efforts to combat this require effective communication and information exchange. The United Nations and the European Parliament have repeatedly stressed the indispensable role of non-governmental organisations and individuals in combating violence in all its forms and encouraged their increased involvement. This service is an integral activity of the WomenAid International Anti-Trafficking programme, which includes the UK Anti-Trafficking Network (UKAT). WomenAid International recently organised the first national anti-trafficking conference 'Combating Global Trafficking: Approaches, Strategies and Interventions', which took place on 11 March in London. Speakers included Radhika Coomaraswamy, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, Isabella Menachini, Italy, William Hughes, Director General National Crime Squad, UK, Lord Alton and Peter Brennan, ILO. Conference Papers are forthcoming. Request from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] and online later at www.womenaid.org/ukat On 13th March Lord Alton introduced a debate on trafficking of women and children in the House of Lords.
