Answering to myself: you have to activate the xsendfile module in apache
and do the appropriate configuration described in the paragraph "Sending
files using Apache". Which makes sense of course since this is the way
apache takes in charge the requests from the viewers (and copes with the
byte-range requests). Sorry for the noise.
