Re: [Audyssey] Altereon quests suggestion, area info
Hi Dark, I agree the quest streams are amazing on the newbie islands and help to progress players through the game very well. I have noticed that as you progress from Sloe to Kordan to Archais you get slightly less hand holding when it comes to finding and starting quests. This is good I think as it prepares you for the mainland where you are expected to rely a lot more on your intuition when it comes to finding and starting quests. There have been a lot of improvements to the quest process over the years and a lot of quests do hint where to start them when you use the extra command or near command such as quest near 1. My advice is to talk to everyone and try quest list on everyone. Especially look out for mobs that have been coded to entice you like "An Old man stands here wondering if you will talk to him" or " A worried mother paces back and forth across the floor" These are often hints that they may have a quest or a job to offer. One tip I can offer you is to use the grep command to find which quests you have yet to complete. This is a very powerful command that allows you to filter output of commands to only show you what you are looking for. For example if you want to see if there are quests on sloe that you have not completed then you can use the command - QUESTS sloe |grep TODO What this command does is perform the usual QUESTS sloe command but filters the output to only show you lines that contain "TODO" in them. The grep command can be used throughout the game to quickly find information you are looking for. Another example is if you want to quickly know what time it is on the game then use the command TIME |grep Local This will just show the line that has the local time on it without showing you the rest of the information that the TIME command usually does. The grep command also has 2 useful switches -I ignores case of the search phrase and -v inverts the search logic. So for example the command QUESTS archais |grep -I -v todo will show you all the quests on Archais that you have completed and it will not be case sensitive when evaluation the search phrase "todo" Hope this helps some. I'm absolutely loving alter at the moment, indeed I confess I've slowed down work on the audiogames.net database sinse these days I have less gaming time over all (sinse I am obviously spending lots of time with the very soon to be Mrs. Dark). I'm actually progressing hugely well in the game and surprisingly quickly, indeed I don't think it's going to take too long for me to get back where I was, and without! so much agro. The reason for this is one word: quests! I am absolutely loving all the different quests in the game, accomplishing various tasks, feeling like I'm actually contributing to a story rather than just wandering around and seeing numbers get larger and larger. Indeed, I've never had to grind yet, ie, just seak out and kill mobs for xp without any other goal in mind (though i do take time to practice some of my less used skills and spells). And despite that I'm levelling very rapidly, indeed so rapidly I've tried to level my lower classes so as not to get hit by the xp reduction before I run out of quests, though this doesn't matter too much sinse generally i enjoy doine quests simply in and of themselves, indeed I appreciate that Altereon unlike some games (I'm looking at you Materiamagica), doesn't say "woopse! your too high level and can't do that quest now" The one thing I have found a bit of a problem though, is sometimes finding where the quests are. Obviously when your pointed to a quest by a particular npc like the hierophant in the holy grove that's one thing, however when the quest is just in the list it isn't always clear where to go to get it started or how to begin, eg, I had no idea the "ring of the gate keeper" quest was in the old imp mines without bothering people on the newbie channel, though i was very glad to get that quest (I really enjoyed the descriptions and atmosphere for that one, particularly sinse it was a maze area without combat). The "Quests Nearby" command is pretty good when your entering new areas, and to check you've got all the quests in a particular area, however it doesn't help when you look on the "quests kordan" or "Quests slo" lists. I was therefore wondering if either the the areas you started a quest could be included when looking at a quests list, eg "Won the silver ring of the gate keeper, the old imp mines" or if there could be an expantion of the "quests kordan" command with "quests kordan area" to show a list of what quests occurred where on the island. It'd also be nice if quests I'd already completed could be removed from the list, or listed towards the bottom just so that I no longer

This would be much more precise than the cardinal directions, but the player should be able to choose which method they want. Also, how far away is the animal! We could invent a new type of measurement, like a minicubit and minispan. The bigger one would be four fingers touching and laid out in a straight line on the screen. The smaller one would be one single fingertip, and the player would customize both measurements before starting the first game. Of course there is an even simpler way, a way all blind people know by the time we get out of high school, the coordinate system. You could simply say, sheep at E4 and boom, it would be very easy to find.
