Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
well it depends what code ms is going to release. Speaking of which they are already writing a service pack so who knows, maybe that will fix stuff. Almost on the day they released vista ms decides to do another pack for release at the end of the year. I suspect that when vista came out it was not fully finnished. Rather than having setbacks to the date ms just released the buggy vista and started a service pack. Who knows. [Audyssey] One Year Ago
Hi, A year ago today Marcie did not answer her morning phone call from me. Like so many times in the past I thought that it was a low blood sugar, so I ran across the hall to give her an injection of Glucogon. This time however it was not her blood sugar. She had passed away sometime during the night. So maybe in memory of Marcie, today might be a good day to play a bit of Pong, Snakes and Ladders, Simon or a round or two on the M L B Memorial golf course. Thank you. Re: [Audyssey] Building gaming pcs
Hi Thomas, The thing is, if I were to try to build a computer, for one thing it would never ever get all put together. And if somehow it did, I'm sure that it would go up in smoke the first time that I plugged it in. And if the smoke thing didn't happen I am sure that it would never run properly. Not to mention that I do not know enough about parts to order ones that would be compatible and function well together. So I must be resigned to buying commercially built machines such as from Dell. But hey as I said, I have been nothing but happy with the two that I have bought from them so far. BFN Jim Computers run on smoke. Yep, that's why that if you see all of the smoke coming out of your computer it ain't gonna run no more. Re: [Audyssey] New programming language. sounds promising.
Hi Thomas, I have never created a dll file. Honestly I don't know how to. But so what I do is, I have a starter.frm that contains all of the routines that I use in my games and when I go to start work on a new game I just make a copy of the starter.frm with the name of the new game. I can then modify or delete routines as needed for that new game and if there are routines that I have used in other games that are not in the starter.frm I just copy that code from the old game into the new one. I know that method is not as sophisticated as creating a dll, but hey it works for me. BFN Jim Represented by the law firm of Dewy, Cheatem and How. Re: [Audyssey] Vista Game Compatibility Chart
Hi Jim, Yeah, I used winkit, and that wasn't the problem I encountered here. I've been a user of your games for a number of years, and so I know how to install your games. Smile The problem here I believe is do to Vista's new security. Windows Vista is all about read, write, and execute management. When it comes to system folders like program files, Windows, Users, etc one can not just simply self-extract a bunch a files in to a directory. This is to increase safety from viruses, but it also prevents small time devs like yourself from just dumping a program in the program files directory and forgetting about it. I can offer two solutions for this issue. One you can have self-extractor unpack the files locally to the users home directory, or two I can write you a setup installer for the games which is operating system independant from 98 to Vista. In the long run you might be best served by the second option eventually. Cheers. Re: [Audyssey] Sryth items: what to sell, keep, or hold?
Hi, AC. You should have at least one dwelling by now where you can drop items. My basic rule of thumb is to keep magical items and sell weapons/armor otherwise. Hang onto that bow. I generally wear the best I have and sell the rest. When it's unclear which is best, for example, a superior leather helm vs. a well-crafted hide helm, I compare their stats (to see which has a higher stamina bonus and sell the other one. If the stamina bonuses are the same, I wear the lighter one. If you haven't been to Graldoc yet, go there and do those adventures. They'll open up the market for you, and you'll get better prices. If you haven't at least bought a dwelling in Durnsig, do so. I don't carry anything I can drop if I don't need it right then. That leaves more room to pick up items you can later sell. The durnsig dwelling supposedly has a 24-item limit, but it's not enforced. If you've done Stoneback Hill, you'll also get a dwelling in Trithik, which has a 50-item limit (again unenforced). [Audyssey] Sapi problems
Hi all, I know this is off topic but it does affect my gaming, so I'm posting it here. I recently began experiencing a problem with Sapi 5. Can't say about Sapi 4 but Sapi 5 doesn't seem to want to run anymore. I can't use it with JAWS, and more importantly I can't play many of my favorite Kitchens Inc games. I've tried all the usual stuff, uninstalling and reinstalling the software and the voices, but it's as though Windows isn't recognizing that it's installed, even though the program says it was installed successfully. I'm wondering if this is a problem that can be fixed with relative ease or if I'll have to reformat the hard drive on my Laptop again. I doesn't say that any files are missing, but I'm wondering if that's the case, and if so where I might go to look. Any help would be appreciated. Since I might be using Sapi speach in some games I create I kinda need to get this sorted out. Bryan and Jennie ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Sapi problems
Hi Bryan, You should check in the control panel, go to speech then choose the TextToSpeech. This will let you set the default SAPI voice from those installed and will also allow you to preview the voices. Pick one that works and see if it fixes the problem. I think most programmes that work with SAPI probably just use the default. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Shaun, As long as XP remains in the tech support cycle at Microsoft most hardware vender's will offer compatible driver cds either with the product or for download from the support sites. I can certainly understand your reservations about Vista, but my experience has been more appositive than negative. Those things you are worried about now might be restored or updated in a future service pack. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
true, but I have recieved a mixed bag of things. Vista has best of good and the worst of bad. I don't need to upgrade because everything at the moment is all stable and nice. Although if vista improves I will upgrade just for the speech recognition alone as I've been contemplating buying draggon, guess I won't now. Re: [Audyssey] Vista Jaws
Hello Michael, If you get the new Jaws 8.0.11 patch Jaws 8.0 will operate fine with Vista. However, note, you must absolutely have 8.0.11 and later to get access to Vista. So if you went out and got Vista tomorrow and downloaded Jaws 8.0.11 put it on a cd, and installed it you would be good to go. I recommend getting the 8.0.11 full download rather than the patch for Vista. Cheers. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Vista Jaws
Hi Bryan, that is false. Jaws 8.0.11 released very recently supports Vista. Be sure to download the version that specifically says it is compatible with 2003 and Vista. The first release of 8.0 will not work with Vista, but 8.0.11 will. For the record 8.0.11 is a a free upgrade for Jaws 8.0 users. Cheers. Hi all, I think all of us are beginning to really get off topic. I know all of you are interested, but we are really getting away from gaming and more in to asking about screen readers, apps, etc. So I will simply ask that we start closing this topic amung others. I will end this note by stating what I have stated earlier Jaws 8 will work under Vista provided you install 8.0.11. For more information about 8.0.11 and access with Vista please see http://www.FreedomScientific.com and get in touch with one of the Jaws lists or read some current news off the Jaws head quarters page.
