Re: [Audyssey] The best muds to play?

2009-01-24 Thread Shadow Dragon
I'm sure you'll get the same old responses here, alter aeon (blah), and
miriani (blah.) I've been playing a mud called Blood Dusk lately. It's a bit
like the conquest mud I posted a while back, only slightly more developed.
The combat system is somewhere between manual and automatic, you have full
control over your character in combat, but if you don't make an action
before you're supposed to act, the AI will perform whichever action it
thinks is best, or perhaps it selects one at random. Not sure. All the mud
seems to be so far is strictly combat. I've seen some references to quests,
like finding a hermit's dog, or paying your respects to a certain living
god, but they all seem to be either not developed, half-baked or
exceptionally hard since I haven't managed to complete a single one of them
yet. Its definitely worth a look though if you're into advanced mechanics.
This is in general, not directed strictly towards lindsay.

As an example of how advanced the combat system is. The most advanced
fighting style I've seen is wrestling. In most games wrestling is either
just random unlinked throws and junk that barely make any sense. On this
game positions are actually taken into account. If you put someone in a
joint lock and perform that attack again, you'll tighten up the joint lock
instead of applying a new one, and your opponent will be described as
struggling to escape your leg lock, arm lock, etc. You also have standing
grapples, like headlocks and such. You can also do standing joint locks, and
there's even various position based attacks. For example. If your opponent
is grounded and you're standing, if you perform an elbow, you'll do a flying
elbow drop. I find it kind of interesting, though the wrestling style needs
some serious rebalancing. Anyway, if you feel like checking it out:

mud.dusk.org:7000

Gordan or talerous if you need help. I won't always be on as these
characters and gordan is my main, but the list of characters I plan to
create to explore all skillsets is too long to post here.

Re: [Audyssey] The best muds to play?

2009-01-24 Thread William L. Houts

Hi Lindsay,

This is one of my favorite topics.
I've tried lots of muds over the last ten years and have found a few which
match my own criteria. I tend to favor games with an interesting sound and
feel, if you know what I mean. So I like muds which aren't unadorned Diku
or Circle muds, with their beastly fidoes and copies of AD and D spells. I
tend to favor muds where RP is encouraged if not demanded, and I like muds
with many races and classes. Finally, i like games where there is some
element of crafting. I know most people don't share all of these wishes
from my personal wish list, but it gives you an idea of my biases.

So. New Worlds mud is very good. There are usually between 50 and
75players at any time. New Worlds has solid guilds, an extensive map and is
roleplay intensive. The good thing about the RP, though, is that it is
sometimes rewarded with nontrivial experience and gold bonuses. New Worlds
is blind friendly, and the staff and players will go out of their way to
help you if you just mention that you use a screen reader. There's even a
global channel for blind players.Be aware, though, that if you mean to join
a guild, you will have lots of in depth contact with other players higher
than you in the pecking order. Just play your character with a little
panache, and everything will go well.

New Worlds is atHost Name: newworlds-rpg.com port: 4002.

Next, I can recommend the Iron Realms games. There are currently four text
muds and each of them has its own mythos and set of races to play although
the observant player will notice that there is a good deal of overlap
between guilds from the different games. IR games run on a custom game
engine,so the acquisition of skills and spells is peculiar to those games
and won't be found outside of the IR universe. The room descriptions are
deft and there is lots of depth to the play. You can hunt critters, or set
your sights on other players. As you may have read on this mailing list,
though, all of the Iron Realms guilds require a certain amount of homework.
By this, I mean that you have to write little essays and complete quests in
order to progress through the early levels of your guild, even if you're
just a dumb warrior. Finally, the IR games provide players with
opportunities to buy powerful artifacts with RL money, which may add to your
experience. Some players blow through the game with hundreds of dollars of
such power ups, but they are by no means necessary to enjoyment of the game.
Personally, I like to just hang out on my guild channel and banter as much
as I like adventuring. You can try my current favorite, Achaea, at:

Host Name: achaea.com port 23

Next, I've been doing some exploration of Discworld Mud. Discworld is
based upon the popular humorous fantasy novels by Terry Pratchett. There is
a lot of silliness on DW, but the game interface and logic is very solid,
and I've found players to be very blind friendly. They tend to favor
players who take a comic approach to roleplying, but there's plenty hard and
fast adventure to be had. One thing I think is cool about DW is that it
takes weather into account in a serious way. While your character can wear
the usual helms and ringmail shirts, it is also recommended that they
purchase socks and underwear for those cold Morporkian nights.

Discworld is at Host Name:discworld.atuin.net Port: 23

Finally, I find myself returning again and again to Avatar mud. It's based
on the Diku codebase, which I absolutely loathe, but Snikt and his helpers
have done such a good job of creating a unique gaming experience that I can
forgive even the beastly fidos of Midgaard. There are only seven classes
available to start with, but there are numerous very different races and
with hero levels and remorting a number ofcool classes are open to the
persistent player. I've been coming back to Avatar for more than a dozen
years and there are no signs of it going away yet.

Avatar is at: Host Name: avatar.outland.org Port: 3000

Good luck, and I look forward to hearing what other Audyssey members think
about their favorite muds.

2009-01-24 Thread michael maslo
Blood dusk is interesting. I have played it but the player base is real low
the last time I was there. It is cool combat but all combat so far and it
got a little boring.

I am playing of course miriani and a new one called cowboy bee bop which is
actually pretty cool.
