[Audyssey] terminal verlosity

2009-05-20 Thread shaun everiss
.
I have some issues with tdv.
The landing system is just to hard.
ok I am at 16000 and i get the lock.
can keep it to until I get to 1 it drifts off but I can get it back almost.
below 1 its near impossible.
I have to keep leveling off lock and continue landing.
now I get to 9000, I think you should be allowed to put the gear up and down at
this altatude, its just easier in my opinion.
anyway below this the lock is just darn hard.
its like i am running over the lock, going to fast for it.
if I slow down to much I get told I am to loose.
ok
I get the lock.
as I go down I get harder and harder to lock.
eventually I just can't lock it in, around 9400 or so.
I decided to try to land anyway, but crashed instead.
I know the docs say the landing is more complex but I never thought it was
going to be that hard.
any tips?

Hi Charles,

Thank you, I'm glad that you like the way that the pitches work.

I did practice up allot in the batting practice and if you are set on swing you
can sometimes hit the key soon enough, at least enough to foul the pitch off.
I think that is kind of like the real game like you said.

[Audyssey] TDV and the Philips 2909 gamepad

2009-05-20 Thread The Kolesar Brothers
Hi to one and all.
I need to find a new headset before I seriously stress test the new TDV

I've played a couple of racing rounds and won one.
I am curious though.
Like I asked in the subject. Is anyone playing TDV with the philips 2909
game pad that some of us picked up from walmart? If so? How successful are
you in the game with it.
Also, I threw this out on the BSC Games mailing list with no luck.
Just was wondering if anyone is playing the pipe version two Blast Chamber
game with the 2909 and how successful are they?
I used the cheat codes with it yesterday for a game of all side scrollers.
I did pretty good with that.
It looks like my problem is finding the correct pipe and twisting the valve
with the gamepad.
Any and all advice would be appreciated it.
Its pretty bad to be a beta tester for the game and not being able to get
out of the practice round with the gamepad.
The only problem I'm having with troopanum is landing the spaceship safely
in the first bonus level.
I'm working level by level with hunter and it looks like the philips works
pretty nicely with hunter. I've gotten as far as the valley of the tigers
thus far.
It does take some practice to convert from the keyboard to the gamepad.
So to my fellow gamers have fun and competition and to brag to begin. LOL.

[Audyssey] MOTA Mouse Support

2009-05-20 Thread Thomas Ward

Hello everyone,
At this point in time I am working on improving mouse input support for
Mysteries of the Ancients beta 5. Now, that i think I have it working
correctly I was wondering about what actions you would prefer being
assigned to the mouse. Below is a tentative default layout for the
mouse. Feel free to agree or disagree with this mouse layout.

Player Actions

Climb Down: mouse back
Climb Up: mouse forward
Draw/Holster Weapons: right click
Jump Left: alt+mouse left
Jump Right: alt+mouse right
Jump Up: alt+mouse forward
Perform Action: left click
Sprint Left: Shift+mouse left
Sprint Right: shift+mouse right
Walk Left: mouse left
Walk Right: mouse right

Menu Actions

Menu Next: wheel back
Menu Prier: wheel forward
Menu Select: left click

An alternative stream of thought I have had is instead of assigning
weapon controls to the left and right mouse buttons is use them as jump
and sprint modifiers. So instead of using alt+mouse left to jump left
you could hold down the left button and drag the mouse left for a big
jump to the left. Any thoughts on this?

Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchen's Baseball Pitches

2009-05-20 Thread Ryan Strunk
Gentlemen,

On some of the mechanics of baseball, professional or otherwise, I have to
respectfully disagree with you. By watching all aspects of the pitch,
including its delivery, spin, direction, force, velocity, etcetera, a
baseball player is often able to tell whether a pitch will be a ball or a
strike long before it enters the strike zone. If he cannot tell by the time
it has entered the zone, he has the option to check his swing before the bat
circles all the way around in order to avoid the strike call.

Certainly determining whether a pitch is a ball or a strike is a very
delicate thing, but it is not as difficult as you guys are saying. Many
commentators are able to tell not only where the pitch is bound, but also
what the actual pitch is--slider, sinker, knuckle ball, and so on. If the
commentators can't tell, the player can, and the umpire definitely can. In
addition, if it were so impossible to determine ball vs. strike, why are
there so many walks in baseball? Players don't just hack at everything that
crosses the plate; that's not real baseball.

My argument in all of this is that the game makes determining the difference
between a ball and a strike nearly impossible for a casual gamer. I don't
argue that it should be made painfully simple, but I think that the
difficulty factor should be ratcheted down some. There is something to be
said for practice; I think that it should be required in any game to give it
replay value. But when even the developer admits to swinging at virtually
every pitch, something is off the scale.

I do think you put together a fun game, Jim, and I appreciate all of the
work that went into it. I just think that you could give the player a bit
more control and a bit more satisfaction if the pitches weren't such a
precise science.

I would welcome any discussion on this, however.

Ryan

Even if you don't have perfect pitch, as I don't, you might be able, with
practice, determine whether the ball is within the strike zone. As far as
the time you have when at bat, a major league batter swings before
determining whether a ball will or will not move into the strike zone, so I
think this is a realistic part of the game. Good work, Jim.

 Hi Ryan,

You are totally correct about everything that you said about my baseball
pitches. They are very very hard to hear if they are a strike or a ball.
Personally I mostly swing at everything. I was afraid that if I made them

much easier, people would just never swing and end up with way too many
walks. But in my defense, even with the instant replay the commentators
often can not say for sure if the pitch was a ball or strike. And the
batters swing at anything that is close.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Mouse Support

2009-05-20 Thread Scott Chesworth
Is there any reason why you're thinking of binding jump modifier to
alt instead of control? Makes sense in my mind if they're bound to
ctrl, its one less thing to remember when making the transition to
playing with a mouse. I was thinking that perhaps you could bind
either the jump or sprint modifier to the middle mouse button (the
wheel clicks for that even on most two button mice I think?) to give
more of an emphasis on using the mouse in combat. Which one people
use more out of jumping ducking and sprinting I guess we won't know
until the replies come in, but for me it's more about jumping and
ducking in combat.

Re: [Audyssey] TDV and the Philips 2909 gamepad

2009-05-20 Thread Munawar Bijani

Hi Ron,
Your stick should work just fine with TDV; the implementation is very
generic. I've only tested the game using two types of sticks; one that I
have, and one which a tester has. Both of these work fine. Mine has a rudder
control, while his throttle stick is twistable. I have a speed up/down
arrow, while he has an actual speed lever. So if these two sticks worked,
your should work...unless there's another configuration I haven't thought
of. :). Let me know how it goes. I definitely need more people to test with
flight sticks. It's one thing that's still being improved as I gather more
information.

Re: [Audyssey] terminal verlosity

2009-05-20 Thread Munawar Bijani

Hi,
You don't need to be steadily locked onto the landing beacon to land
successfully. Remember that the landing beacon is placed smack in the middle
of the runway. It's the runway you need to land on, not the landing beacon.
:). Also, when you start decreasing speed, it's fine if the stall warning
comes on, you're only dead if you decrease too much speed below it. I'll
give you a tip: when the stall warning comes on, assuming it's because of
your low speed and not steep nose angle, you still have about one to
two-hundred knots before you start to free fall.

Hope this helps,

I have some issues with tdv.
The landing system is just to hard.
ok I am at 16000 and i get the lock.
can keep it to until I get to 1 it drifts off but I can get it back
almost.

below 1 its near impossible.
I have to keep leveling off lock and continue landing.
now I get to 9000, I think you should be allowed to put the gear up and
down at this altatude, its just easier in my opinion.

anyway below this the lock is just darn hard.
its like i am running over the lock, going to fast for it.
if I slow down to much I get told I am to loose.
ok
I get the lock.
as I go down I get harder and harder to lock.
eventually I just can't lock it in, around 9400 or so.
I decided to try to land anyway, but crashed instead.
I know the docs say the landing is more complex but I never thought it was
going to be that hard.

any tips?

Re: [Audyssey] For all TDV pilots.

2009-05-20 Thread Munawar Bijani

Hi,
Actually, when naming the POVs, we look at everything from the aircraft's
perspective. Thus, internal means you are looking from the perspective of
inside the aircraft, and external means you are looking at the aircraft
from outside. These words mean different things depending on what you count
as your centerpoint, but in TDV the center is always the aircraft. Hope this
helps!

ahh great idea. I'm all over the weapon wheel switching if it can be
done. Might be fiddly to get used to to start with, but it'd mean
that in most combat situations you could completely ignore the
keyboard and focus on your mouse hand. I think that'd go a long way
toward helping people adjust to the new techniques they'd need.

 Hello everyone,
At this point in time I am working on improving mouse input support for
Mysteries of the Ancients beta 5. Now, that i think I have it working
correctly I was wondering about what actions you would prefer being
assigned to the mouse. Below is a tentative default layout for the mouse.
Feel free to agree or disagree with this mouse layout.

 Player Actions

 Climb Down: mouse back
 Climb Up: mouse forward
 Draw/Holster Weapons: right click
 Jump Left: alt+mouse left
 Jump Right: alt+mouse right
 Jump Up: alt+mouse forward
 Perform Action: left click
 Sprint Left: Shift+mouse left
 Sprint Right: shift+mouse right
 Walk Left: mouse left
 Walk Right: mouse right

 Menu Actions

 Menu Next: wheel back
 Menu Prier: wheel forward
 Menu Select: left click

An alternative stream of thought I have had is instead of assigning weapon

controls to the left and right mouse buttons is use them as jump and
sprint modifiers. So instead of using alt+mouse left to jump left you
could hold down the left button and drag the mouse left for a big jump to
the left. Any thoughts on this?
 Cheers.

Hi Ron,
Your stick should work just fine with TDV; the implementation is very
generic. I've only tested the game using two types of sticks; one that I
have, and one which a tester has. Both of these work fine. Mine has a
rudder control, while his throttle stick is twistable. I have a speed
up/down arrow, while he has an actual speed lever. So if these two sticks
worked, your should work...unless there's another configuration I haven't
thought of. :). Let me know how it goes. I definitely need more people to
test with flight sticks. It's one thing that's still being improved as I
gather more information.

Hi to one and all.
I need to find a new headset before I seriously stress test the new TDV
beta.
I've played a couple of racing rounds and won one.
I am curious though.
Like I asked in the subject. Is anyone playing TDV with the philips 2909
game pad that some of us picked up from walmart? If so? How successful
are

you in the game with it.
Also, I threw this out on the BSC Games mailing list with no luck.
Just was wondering if anyone is playing the pipe version two Blast
Chamber

game with the 2909 and how successful are they?
I used the cheat codes with it yesterday for a game of all side
scrollers.

I did pretty good with that.
It looks like my problem is finding the correct pipe and twisting the
valve

with the gamepad.
Any and all advice would be appreciated it.
Its pretty bad to be a beta tester for the game and not being able to get
out of the practice round with the gamepad.
The only problem I'm having with troopanum is landing the spaceship
safely

in the first bonus level.
I'm working level by level with hunter and it looks like the philips
works

pretty nicely with hunter. I've gotten as far as the valley of the tigers
thus far.
It does take some practice to convert from the keyboard to the gamepad.
So to my fellow gamers have fun and competition and to brag to begin.
LOL.
Ron who would like to branch out from the keyboard to the real world of
the

philips 2909 gamepad.

Hi:

Will this work on vista 64 bit especially since it has 32 bit code in it?

Hi Will,
Yes, Mission Mode will be quite different from the standard racing and eath
match modes--the story aspect of it anyway. I can't reveal any more details
about that though or I'll be spoiling the plot.

 Hi all,

I assume that mission mode in 3d velocity will be totally different than
 that of deathmatch and racing?
Is it explained in the manual regarding mission mode? if so I will read
up on it when I download it.
Hope it all works ok on my samsung nc10

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Mouse Support

2009-05-20 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Scott,
That is because the alt key is the jump key in beta 5. As to why I made
the switch it requires a bit of an explanation.
When I first created Mysteries of the Ancients I intended the alt key to
jump just as it is in Tomb Raider and several other mainstream games I
like to play. Only problem was is that DirectInput seamed to ignore the
alt key and I often found myself pressing alt to jump and ended up in
the system menu. Well, since porting Mysteries of the Ancients to the
cross platform engine written in Java the alt key now works without that
problem. So I switched to alt instead of control.
Another reason I switched jump to alt is that it frees the control key
up for more actions. For Example, since control is now free I can use it
to have the player crawl left/right which may come in handy on higher
game levels. You might have to crawl through a narrow passage to get to
some hidden treasure room or just to get through a certain level.

Scott Chesworth wrote:

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Mouse Support

2009-05-20 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi all,
I know I wasn't real clear about that button assignment but perform
action does everything from firing, piccking up items, to opening doors.
It makes sense on the left mouse button to me rather than on the middle
mouse button. So in a combat situation left click would fire and right
click would draw/holster your guns. Although, you are right about one
thing I missed. The middle button click is available for assignment.

Smile.

Munawar Bijani wrote:

Hi,
I like these ideas; they all seem logical to me. However, I think the
action button should be pressing straight down on the mouse wheel
rather than the left click. That would free up left click for
something else.

2009-05-20 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Hmmm...That is a thought. Although, the one consern about using the
wheel to switch weapons is that wheel is awefully easy to accidently
turn. It would bite if you were left clicking like mad and hit the wheel
and instead of your trusty mp5 you ended up using a pistol or something
on accident. Might be better if you actually have to click the middle
mouse button instead of turn the wheel. Good idea though.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Mouse Support

2009-05-20 Thread Shadow Dragon
That'd be pretty tough to do, on my mouse at least. I tend to only click
with one finger, so my hand stays pretty steady on the mouse. But then again
I've never played a really intense game. My brother and dad never seemed to
have much of a problem with the scroll wheel while playing diablo, though I
guess it wasn't as much of a problem there, the one place I'm thinking of in
particular is the paladin and his auras, I guess in that situation if you
happened to smack the scroll wheel by accident you'd just end up using a
different aura a bit further down the line rather than your intended one.
Not nearly as bad as switching to a gun with no ammo or a shorter range, or
even worse, a melee weapon.
