that way you are making more money

Hi Trouble, that's true of course, but some people in our comunity
have wicked tempers. Even worse I've spoken to my fair share of
people that hav a you owe me attitude, and it drives me crazy.
That said, I've thought about setting up something like an msdn
subscription style service. If you can afford it Microsoft has a
subscription for msdn that allows you to download betas for MS
Office, Windows, etc and you can upgrade to the full product for a
discount when it comes out. It is expensive, but it is a way of
getting legal copies of their software as they become available,
and for a discount when they come out.
If I set up a similar service on my web site people would donate x
amount each year for games, and as a result they would get all
alpha, beta, and full releases of my games for a reduced price or
for nothing at all. That's a way of putting money into the company,
but also giving people x number of games for a base fee.

pre orders are up to you, but personally i see the head ache makes
them not worth it.
Just so the others know. Big game companies break out the info on
the update. Just to wet your apatite and then take as long as they
want on the release with no info until release. So you could be
waiting six munths to over a year for more info on the game you
pre paid for, and they do not answer email or letters about said
games.

[Audyssey] the bonus level of monkey business

2009-10-02 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Spoiler
space
HI all
I am going to make a statement and then after that I will explain why I
made the statement.
Ok, so my statement is the following:
It was the intention of james north to make the bonus level of monkey
business impossible to play, even impossible to catch one monkey.
And there is good reasoning behind this.
The music that plays during the bonus level is from the movies
impossible mission. So the music tells you that the level is impossible,
its not a bug in the bonus level, james north wanted to make the bonus
game actually impossible. If it was not his intention to make the bonus
level impossible to play, he would have put other music in the bonus
level.
I know some people thinks that there is a bug in the bonus level, but
there actually isn't.
I think josh from draconis just ported everything to his website, he
just basically sells james north's titles.
It appears that josh never made any changes to james north's games.
So if you are new to monkey business and you are about to play the bonus
level for the first time, keep in mind that it is meant to be
impossible.

It would be fun to try escape a roling bolder.

I do not expect you to use the sound in ten pin alley but a simular

Exactly. That's basically what I was getting at. It would just be so much
quicker and therefore harder that it would probably make the complaints
you've been getting about the latest Beta of Mota seem like nothing. That of
course would probably make the developer who tried the experiment,
particularly if it was a mainstream company and not used to dealing with us,
regret the entire venture.

Hi Bryan, true. Although, I think the bigger problem with this type of
game is that video games tend to operate at much higher speeds than audio
games. The graphics might be redrawn 20 to 30 times a second, and it is
constantly being updated in real time. Certainly faster than audio and
speech feedback will allow for. As a result my audio games are slowed down
to account for the player's ability to listen to things and get some sort
of spoken feedback. At the speed my main game loop runs the screen and
audio would seam to crawl in slow motion for a normal mainstream gamer.
I'm not saying this can't be over come, but it might be much faster and
require quickr reflexes than your average accessible gamer is use to.

Bryan Peterson wrote:

Hi Bryan, quite right. Most accessible game developer's don't worry about
graphics for two reasons. First, they can't see enough to draw the images
themselves, and have no one available who is willing to do the work.
Second, even if they find someone to make them they still can't see it. So
either way it is time and energy spent on something that isn't very useful
or accessible to a blind gamer.

Yes in deed. Athena was the goddess of wisdom, and as a result she was
suppose to be an excellent strategist in combat. Unfortunately a
side-scroller doesn't give anyone much room for realistic combat, but I
can make her hard to defeat all the same. Since you can't kill her the
object will simply be to best her if you can, and she'll give you the orb.

Re: [Audyssey] Why can't we get a challenging game for once? wasMOTA

2009-10-02 Thread Bryan Peterson
There was a big debate about that on the Entombed discussion list a few
weeks back as well, but saving is generally much more a part of that style
of game than it generally is for side scrollers, although I have seen a few
that did allow you to save. Some felt we should only be allowed to save at
Save Points like in some of the Final Fantasy titles, but then there's
always the possibility that you're too beaten up to make it back there alive
and you'd just have to pray you didn't run into anymore monsters before you
made it back. I understand their view point but I don't always agree with
it. Of course some games allow for that by including a Quicksave feature,
although the file will be erased immediately when you load it up again. But
it gives you the option to save if you're on a time crunch or something like
that. But I still feel that if someone doesn't like the save-anywhere option
they don't have to use it much if at all. They can just remember that next
time they die and lose all their hard work.

Hi Bryan,
Exactly my thoughts. If there is someone who doesn't want to save games
while playing there is no law saying they have to. Yes, people can use it
to cheat, but cheaters are only cheating themselves in the end.

Bryan Peterson wrote:
A worthy ambition, but given the increased difficulty I have a feeling

don't like a given feature of a game, ya don't have to use it. Not trying
to be offensive here but that's how I feel. Quite frankly I'm greatful to
have the option to save at any point or I probably would have lost
patience with the new Beta. And as I grow more comfortable I use it less
anyways, usually only right before the boss if I decide I'm going to try
to bring him down.

And of course it's all the more noticeable because we're such a small

but they can just shrug it off because they've probably got lots of folks

see fit, whereas we can't necessarily do that. And it's bound to be more
discouraging than it would be to a big mainstream developer.

Hi Nicol,
Pacman talks does have a save along with the Sarah game but not in the demo
level.

With Sarah you need to find the time turner first before saving.
As Thomas wrote, saving is a kind of cheat but one that is necessary in a
long playing game.
It usually takes me quite a while to get through all the levels of both
games so I do see that it is necessary.

But it does make those games a lot easier if you are saving them very often.

Re: [Audyssey] the bonus level of monkey business

2009-10-02 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Just a slight correction or two. Although Josh sells the original James
North titles, he did make changes to the first games. There are newer
versions of those titles and they do have some fixes and enhancements.

So I respectfully disagree with your statement.

Many thanks.

So if you are new to monkey business and you are about to play the bonus
level for the first time, keep in mind that it is meant to be
impossible.

Re: [Audyssey] python compiler

2009-10-02 Thread Nick Helms
I get it.
PYtexe is accessed through the command line.
This should work, when I get home and test it.
Thanks,
Nick

On 10/1/09, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote:
Hi nick, I think I need to explain this a bit clearer. As you probably
know Python is a scripting language and requires an interpretor to run.
Therefore it is not really compiled to a native Windows program as would
be the case if you used a language like C or C++. What py2exe really
does is it bundles the Python interpretor and your source code together
into an exe file, but it isn't compiled in the triditional sense of the
word. It is more like packaged in an executable archive. I hope that
 makes sense.
Anyway, if you want to use py2exe to make an executable archive you'll
have to get use to working with the Windows command line for this. Most
python tools like that are command line only, not graphical
applications, so you have to be somewhat familiar with the Windows
command prompt to use them. Here is an overview how py2exe works.
First, download and install py2exe from
 http://www.py2exe.org
and install the correct version for your interpretor. Make sure you get
the one that is for your version of the Python interpretor. Else you can
end up screwing things up a bit.
Second, you have to create a custom setup script for your application.
Generally this is easy, but for a newby this is an unexpected step.
Create a filecalled setup.py, and then you will write a script something
like this. For example let us just say the program is called Test.

 import setup
 import py2exe

 setup (console=[Test.py], zipfile=None)

Once you have created and saved your setup script you now have to build
the Python exe archive via the command line. Generally you would type a
command like this in your source directory.
 python setup.py py2exe --bundle 1
If everything worked correctly you would have a file called Test.exe in
 your dist directory.

but that's the whole point, isn't it? of course there's risks involved with
saving in redefined places. Sometimes I wish that in invincible tiger, you
could save after every chapter or something, but you can't, and I'm glad for
that, it makes the game a lot harder and more fun. what you guys don't
realize is that if we have the ability to save anywhere in a game, we're
most likely going to use it. it's an impulse thing. oh no I'm gonna lose!
let me save. but if that temptation was removed by not having the feature at
all, we'd enjoy the game more in the longrun.

There was a big debate about that on the Entombed discussion list a few
weeks back as well, but saving is generally much more a part of that style
of game than it generally is for side scrollers, although I have seen a
few that did allow you to save. Some felt we should only be allowed to
save at Save Points like in some of the Final Fantasy titles, but then
there's always the possibility that you're too beaten up to make it back
there alive and you'd just have to pray you didn't run into anymore
monsters before you made it back. I understand their view point but I
don't always agree with it. Of course some games allow for that by
including a Quicksave feature, although the file will be erased
immediately when you load it up again. But it gives you the option to save
if you're on a time crunch or something like that. But I still feel that
if someone doesn't like the save-anywhere option they don't have to use it
much if at all. They can just remember that next time they die and lose
all their hard work.

Hi Bryan,
Exactly my thoughts. If there is someone who doesn't want to save games
while playing there is no law saying they have to. Yes, people can use it
to cheat, but cheaters are only cheating themselves in the end.

Bryan Peterson wrote:

trying to be offensive here but that's how I feel. Quite frankly I'm
greatful to have the option to save at any point or I probably would
have lost patience with the new Beta. And as I grow more comfortable I
use it less anyways, usually only right before the boss if I decide I'm
going to try to bring him down.

Re: [Audyssey] the bonus level of monkey business

2009-10-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Nicol, I beg to differ with you. I do know Josh has made some changes to
James North's titles. The changes haven't necessarily been major, but
there have been some changes made here and there to keep them somewhat
up to date.
As for the music for the bonus level it is called Mission Impossible
not Impossible Mission. Just because James North used that music for
the bonus level it does not mean James North intended the bonus level to
be impossible. Difficult yes, but not impossible. Please, stop taking
things too litterally.

So if you are new to monkey business and you are about to play the bonus
level for the first time, keep in mind that it is meant to be
impossible.

Re: [Audyssey] Why can't we get a challenging game for once? wasMOTA

2009-10-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Bryan, yes it is. As it happens the save game feature is a standard
feature in my game engine too, and whatever I do to the engine to modify
the save game feature will effect all other games built with the same
engine. So that's another goodreason why I am reluctant to modify it for
one game.

Bryan Peterson wrote:

true. also, the exit sound has been changed in these games. if you listen to
old main menu reviews kelly did back when the games were in ESP softworks
the exit sound was a buzzlike thing, the new titles are using a longer,

Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list

2009-10-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, definitely. Take my version of Montezuma's Revenge verses the
mainstream game released in 1984 as an example here.
In my version enemies would only do about 25% damage on the beginner
level and would only be updated once a second or so. That's an eternity
for a mainstream vidio game. It would be child's play for a mainstream
gamer.
The real 1984 game, which mine was based on, operated at least 10 times
faster, enemies moved rapidly on the screen, and coming in contact with
an enemy resulted in instant death. It was definitely far more
challenging, difficult, and tricky than mine ever hoped to be. I
actually emulated some of this on the expert difficulty level, but
people complained, it is too hard.
My conclusion is rather obvious. If my expert level came close to
emulating the actual game and people complained it was too difficult
what does that say about the average blind gamer? What does that say
about our willingness to play mainstream games as they were designed
without handicaps? Are we really willing and able to play at the same
level as the mainstream gamers?

Bryan Peterson wrote:
Exactly. That's basically what I was getting at. It would just be so
much quicker and therefore harder that it would probably make the
complaints you've been getting about the latest Beta of Mota seem like
nothing. That of course would probably make the developer who tried
the experiment, particularly if it was a mainstream company and not
used to dealing with us, regret the entire venture.

Re: [Audyssey] Preordering was MOTABeta

2009-10-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Oh, absolutely. It is a lot more personal as I have contact with my
customers directly on this list, on the USA Games list, various other
accessibility related lists, by phone for tech support calls, etc. As a
result I get to know them some and as is to be expected I like some and
dislike others on a personal and professional level. It wouldn't be
that way if USA Games were a mainstream commercial company.
I know that the mainstream game companies have several levels of
customer service which are there to handle sales, tech support, and so
on. Chances are slim to none that you will get to talk to the developer
of game x or to speak to the head of the company. As a result they can
afford to do whatever they want, and treat their customers with
indifference.

Bryan Peterson wrote:
And of course it's all the more noticeable because we're such a small
community. I bet mainstream devs get nasty comments like that all the
time but they can just shrug it off because they've probably got lots
of folks there who can just hit the delete button or handle the
comments however they see fit, whereas we can't necessarily do that.
And it's bound to be more discouraging than it would be to a big
mainstream developer.

strategy. You are just wildly trying to get through as fast and
furiously as you can. Sometimes a little foresight and planning can
overcome certain difficulties.
In Troopenum, for example, everything below level 10is pretty easy. So
use that time to build up super lasers, ground nukes, bonus lives, etc.
By level 12 or so you will want to begin bringing out the heavy
weaponry. The longer you can wait before deploying the heavy weaponry
the better chance you have of kicking Lord Vector's rear. Even though
the game is a straight arcade shooter it isn't holy without some
strategy involved.

Hi,

2009-10-02 Thread Munawar Bijani

Hi,
Minusing a save feature is good for some games--however, with a lot of other
games the games are simply too long to not include a save feature. We have
to account for the player having a life outside of the game as well. Plus,
getting so far and then losing, and losing again and again because you
failed to dodge ONE missile will get a lot of players frustrated. This is
why with Three-D Velocity, for instance, a save anywhere feature will be
available in the story mode.

but that's the whole point, isn't it? of course there's risks involved
with saving in redefined places. Sometimes I wish that in invincible
tiger, you could save after every chapter or something, but you can't, and
I'm glad for that, it makes the game a lot harder and more fun. what you
guys don't realize is that if we have the ability to save anywhere in a
game, we're most likely going to use it. it's an impulse thing. oh no I'm
gonna lose! let me save. but if that temptation was removed by not having
the feature at all, we'd enjoy the game more in the longrun.

Re: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list

2009-10-02 Thread Munawar Bijani

Hi,
If you select C Sharp.NET your best bet is to get SlimDX which includes a
DirectSound and XAudio wrapper (I tend to use the former since it's not in
beta by Microsoft):

http://code.google.com/p/slimdx
This is the library I use. You will have to write your own functions for
handling audio but it's not too difficult to do. The SlimDX API just allows
.NET programs to interface to DirectX. So with it you have the full power of
DX in .NET.

Subject: [Audyssey] Questions for all you game developers on the list

Hi All. I am in the midst of writing an accessible video game and have a
few questions
to ask. First up, I'd like to know which open source engine is most
frequently being
used by all you experienced developers, or hav you had to build a graphics
and audio
engine for your game from scratch? Second, I am still juggling in my mind
as to
whether I'll code my game in cSharp or c++. In comparison, are there any
significant
drawbacks or significant advantages in terms of performance and
reliability if i
were to choose one above the other? I am quite profficient in both,
although I've
taken a microsoft certified course in cSharp, whereas for c++, it has been
mostly
self taught. Also, if anyone of you could point me to a good tutorial on
keyboard
input, especially for triggering audio events, I'd really appreciate it.
my last
question is, if i had to resort to Microsoft's DirectX SDK for developing
my game,
is there a way to make the keyboard controls accessible? Any input is
extremely

welcomed. Cheers! and thanks

2009-10-02 Thread Ryan Strunk
I'm with you. So the save feature is there and we can decide whether or not
to use it, but those of us who don't save every ten steps don't get anything
special for actually playing the game well.

On the Entombed discussion group Jason mentioned that Entombed will likely
have a standard mode and a hardcore mode. The latter will have things like
limited saves. In my opinion, that's the way to go.

I think you're absolutely right about the comparison between mainstream
titles and those released for our community. Games in the mainstream market
are designed to take considerably longer to beat.

 Bryan Peterson wrote:

don't like a given feature of a game, ya don't have to use it. Not
trying to be offensive here but that's how I feel. Quite frankly I'm
greatful to have the option to save at any point or I probably would
have lost patience with the new Beta. And as I grow more comfortable I
use it less anyways, usually only right before the boss if I decide I'm
going to try to bring him down.

Hi Yohandy,
I'm not sure what you mean by planning on releasing anything original.
Mysteries of the Ancients is a game created from scratch by me. Granted
some of the inspiration came from Tomb Raider, but it is more or less an
original work. It hasn't turned out exactly as planned, but I do have
plans of continuing the game series at some point using a full 3d first
person environment.
As far as my future plans goes one thing I'd like to do is port the
Genesis Engine to C++. Then, create cross platform versions that will
run on Mac, Linux, and Windows. However, that is much easier said than
done though.
Anyway, as far as the MOTA game levels goesI'm creating rough drafts of
the levels. mostly they are notes written out like a walkthrough that
describes each room, where to go, what traps to avoid, etc. As soon as i
fix a couple of issues with the game engine I'll begin adding those
levels to the game.

Yohandy wrote:

understandable. btw, how are the rest of the levels progressing? I'm
curious. are you planning to release anything original after this game
is released? you had lots of dreams and I'm really hoping they end up
happening
