my thought on the last crusade is this. it could be longer instead of
three stages. which means it could have at least a couple of more stages.
the fights was nice i like that the battles was random what i mean is when
you fight you might lose one time and then the next time you might win. i
enjoy the music it kind of remind me of the zelda music and the final
fantasy music. i also enjoy the voice acting. the guy who did that did a
great job. someone tell me was that the same person who made the game?
on the game they could have you travel in a tomb and the fight the boss
in the grave yard. they could have you go into a cabin and fight the
first boss. but other then this review i give this game a five out of

[Audyssey] Scansoft voices

2010-05-12 Thread Lori Duncan
Hi I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the best places is to get the
scansoft voices for Sappi5? I know there are natural voices from different
suppliers but am actually a bit shocked at the price, especially as some of
them which are supposed to sound natural sound a bit stilted. I'd like to get
the Scansoft Karon one.

2010-05-12 Thread dark

Hi.

really nice review of the game, and a great explanation for some of the
questions often asked by people trying it for the first time, I'll
stick a link to it on the entombed page at audiogames.net so that people can
access it more easily.

Btw, just for information, on the targiting front 1 = left foot, 3 = right
foot, 5 = torso, 4 = left arm 6 = right arm, and 8 = head.

this makes a lot of sense on the numberpad sinse it roughly resembles a
stick figure.

Also, the clank sound when hit actually means you've hit, but been blocked,
ie, not done enough damage or had a hard enough weapon to get through an
enemy's defenses. Sinse the branche you get at the start is pretty pathetic
as a weapon, this is why you heard it occasionally.

hope this explains things.

Btw, i'm currently working on a players' handbook for the game which will
serve as a sort of advanced manual. thus far it's about half done, but
there's a lot to explain. hopefully when it's finished it will answer those
sorts of questions.

Re: [Audyssey] Scansoft voices

2010-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
I'd highly recommend that you don't buy the Scansoft Real Speak voices
from Nextup.com and here is why.
As I understand it a while backNuance, the company that owns Scansoft,
has changed the way it licences its Real Speak voices. Under the new
licensing scheme the products must be purchased by a company and then
locked specifically to that product. In other words if you buy
Scansoft Karen, Tom, whatever from Nextup.com those will only work
with Nextup.com's products such as Text Aloud, Weather Aloud, and News
Aloud. You can not turn around and use it with Window-Eyes, Jaws, or
your favorite game by Jim Kitchen, because they are no longer,
strictly speaking, Sapi voices. They must be accessed using a specific
product, and only that specific product through a special license.
So if you want to use Scansoft Tom, Daniel, Karen, etc with Jaws 11
you must license the voice through Freedom Scientific for Jaws. If you
want to use those voices with Text Aloud you have to turn around and
license a copy of those voices through Nextup.com specifically for
that product. In short, those voices are going to cost you dearly to
have, and I am vvery glad that I managed to purchase those voices when
Jaws 8 and Openbook 8 came out when they were still Sapi voices and
not under the new more restrictive license.
I hate to say it, but at this point I don't know of any legal way to
get the older Sapi 5 voices without resorting to outright piracy, and
it seams to me to be the logical result of this kind of radical, money
grabbing, greedy, unfair change in licensing. Normally I don't
advocate software piracy, but when a company makes this kind of
idiotic polacy I don't feel a bit sorry if it happens to them. It is
one thing to charge once for a product that you can use with most of
your software, but quite another when the license basically forces you
to purchase a copy for each and every product you intend to use it
with. This is criminal in my book, and the company does not deserve
any mor of our business until they shape up and change their polacy.
I could be wrong about all this, but it seams odd to me that the
Scansoft and Nuance web sites no longer have the Real Speak voices for
sale on their web site like the use to. When I check Nextup.com they
say right on the web site that these voices will only work with
Nextup.com products. Go to Freedom Scientific, guess what, all of the
new Scansoft voice downloads only work with Jaws and not anything
else. So what is really going on here?

Re: [Audyssey] Scansoft voices

2010-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,
Like I just wrote in my last message I really don't know of any place
where the generic Sapi versions of the Scansoft voices can be located
these days. A friend of mine wanted a copy like I own, that came
with Jaws 8 and Openbook 8, that works with games, screen readers, and
everything else, and unfortunately they can't be found anywhere. I've
checked the Nuance web site and there is no listing for the voices as
their once was a couple years back, and if you get them with one of
their Scansoft products like Omnipage apparently the voices only work
with Omnipage and nothing else. If you get them with Jaws or Openbook
from Freedom Scientific they only work with Freedom Scientific
products. If you buy them from Nextup they only work with products
like Text Aloud, News Aloud, and Weather Aloud. If you buy a GPS with
them on them they only work on that GPS device of course. In short,
there seams to be a universal change in the way Nuance does business
and how exactly they license their Real Speak voices. There doesn't
seam to be a way to license and use them as a standard generic Sapi
voice any more. At least not publically anyway.

You're right Tomas, thanks for that I was outraged before about the prices!
I wasn't going to pay 32£ odds for a voice which I can easilly access
through Jaws. As I see it companies take advantage of their customers, if
we buy a product we pay the money therefore it should be up to us what we do
with it. On the other hand Microsoft should be giving out better Sappi
voices, because even Microsoft Mary is starting to get on my nerves! I know
they have a new Anna voice with windows 7, but I don't know if upgrading
would do me any good, for example will it mess up my windows xp interface,
start menus etc. For another will my audio games be harmed in any way?

Re: [Audyssey] Scansoft voices

2010-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,
Yes, you are right that Windows 7 does have a better Sapi voice called

as good as the Scansoft Real Speak voices or the ATT Natural voices
in my opinion. So even though I own Windows 7 I don't really use Anna
much myself because I own better quality voices, but for a free voice
it is pretty good.
As for the Windows 7 interface it builds a lot upon changes introduced
in Windows Vista, and is quite a bit different from Windows XP. If you
haven't used Windows Vista prier to upgrading to Windows 7 then many
of the changes will come as a surprise to you as things are somewhat
different now.
For example, when you bring up the start menu instead of a single menu
or list the screen is split into columns with your frequently used
programs, search field, all programs menu, etc on one side of the
screen and your user directory, documents, control panel, etc on the
other. It isn't difficult to navigate, but you will have to explore
the new start menu some to figure out where things are. You may have
to go into the start menu properties to turn some things on/off such
as the run command if you want it.
Another change is the old menu bars seen in older versions of Windows
such as XP are pretty much a thing of the past. Now, the old menu
bars have been replaced by the menu ribbins like those in Microsoft
Office 2007 and Microsoft 2010. A lot of Microsoft's products are
going that way, and that is the new look and feel you might say for
all future software so you might as well get use to menu ribbins
sooner or later.
Another important change you'll have to get use to is a lot of the
Windows 7 windows are integrated into Explorer, and have a web view
look and feel to them. For example, if you click on control panel by
default it will show up as a web page with links to click on to change
security settings, user accounts, preferences, programs and features,
etc. Way different from the control panel you know and love from XP
that's for sure. I believe in some cases you can change it back to the
XP look and feel, but in many of the cases you are stuck with the new
look and feel.
So bottom line if you come at Windows 7 expecting a newer version of
XP forget it. Windows 7 is a whole new ball game, and needs to be
treated as the new operating system that it is. Even Vista doesn't
quite compare to Windows 7 because Microsoft majorly over halled the
operating system removing several things that were in Vista to make it
faster, more stable, support a wider range of hardware, etc while
living up to being the first solid Windows operating system since XP.
I'm quite happy with it, and don't mind leaving Xp behind.
Finally, as for your audio games there are a few issues you need to be
aware of, but in most cases they are easily fixed.
One major issue is that most of the audio games out there from
Draconis, L-Works, GMA, Kitchens Inc, etc were all written in Visual
Basic 6 which is no longer officially supported on Windows 7. There
is, however, an easy solution to the problem. If you download and
install Jim Kitchens Winkit setup you will get the complete Visual
Basic 6 runtime library and DirectX libraries which restores support
on Windows 7 for Visual Basic applications. This means if you do that
you should be able to run most of your pre-Windows 7 games without
too much problem.
Another issue is that Windows 7's security polacies have changed.
Unfortunately, most game developers have not yet gotten around to
rewriting or updating their software to properly support Windows 7's
User Account Control security system. It is often responcibile for
effecting the operation of several old games. One way to resolve this
problem in the mean time is to disable UAC support on Windows 7. It
will increase the risk of viruses and other malware, but on the other
hand does resolve many compatibility issues with games and other older
applications designed for Windows XP and earlier. Personally, I think
that having UAC on provides a better layer of protection, but if you
want to disable it to support older applications then it can be done.

Hi,
Lol! That's stretching things quite a bit. I'd say with the engine
written I should be able to have new games done round about three or
four months with the engine depending whatever I need to code to make
the new game. I may have to update the engine from time to time to add
this or that feature as needed. As it is there are still things
written in the .Net version of the engine I'll eventually have to port
to C++ I just didn't take the time to do yet. What we have hear is a
smaller verison of the engine, and before i do my next project I'll
have to add some of the 3d commands and update the A.I. system for an
FPS game.

Hi Lori,
Yep. Sure is. It has been around for a few years, but grade 2 is stil
the standard for most braille publications because many braille users
haven't updated their braille skills and still are not aware of the
new braille contractions. However, grade 3 is now being taught to new
braille students, and builds upon grade 2. I'm not familiar with all
the new braille contractions myself but one I remember from my brief
course was the chch contraction for church and a couple of others like
that. No big deal really, but would throw you off if you were reading
along and saw them in a book or magazine. Actually, I did see a couple
of magazines that use grade 3 braille and I had to ask someone from
the Vision Center what in heck this contraction was because I didn't
have it in school. Lol!

Rail Racer did sort of explore that territory actually. Personally my idea
was more along the lines of a blind version of The Simpsons where the blind
folks would be more the Lisa types while the sighties would be more like
Bart and Homer. Of course that wouldn't be entirely fair to the ones who
recently lost their sight, since however much the sighted community might
get things wrong where we're concerned they do deserve at least some
compassion. But a blind protagonist isn't out of the question in some of my
games, and not just having to do with blindness. Maybe I'll parody the
misconception some sighted folks have that we're gifted with superpowers.

Hi Lori,
Well, if we are really honest about it though companies like Microsoft
and Nuance are out to rip everyone off. The more and more I look
around my country, the United States, I've found myself living in a
corperation owned state were it is a dog eat dog world. Every major
corperation and bank has the attitude it is their God given right to
rip everyone off and not pay for it. When the government handed over a
750 billion dollar bale out plan to Wall Street big wigs like City
Group, Goldman and Sax, Bank of America, and A.I.G. they pretty much
said in effect who our government cares about, and it certainly was
not the working middle class and the average American tax payer. Now,
do we really expect our current president to help stop the curuption
when Obama's number one financial backer was Goldman and Sax, and
some of the very same crooks that got us into this mess do to their
subprime lending crap?
Sigh...I didn't mean to bring politics into this discussion, but I did
want to make the point that companies here in the United States are
pretty cutthroat. They'll cut anyone's throat if it will make them an
extra buck or two. You and I are peons in the eyes of these
corperations. What do they care when their C.E.O. is making a million
bucks a day in some cases. The greed of these crooks makes you want to
scream doesn't it?

Hi Lori,
Yes, you are right that Windows 7 does have a better Sapi voice called
Anna. It is better than Mike, Mary, and Sam. However, it still isn't
as good as the Scansoft Real Speak voices or the ATT Natural voices
in my opinion.
Personally, I think
that having

Yeah, although Microsoft Office is an unfair comparison since it is in

Now, you want to say something like Final Fantasy 13 then you are

RPG games are usually the most complex to create given the amount of

Good Day:

Computer braille is a code to be used for programming material, rather like
nemeth braille is used for mathematics and science. Grade 3 braille is a
shorthand version of grade 2 braille with several hundred contractions
(frankly, I am not familiar enough with this braille to give much

Hi Muhammed,
Ummm...No. There actually is a grade 3 braille which is similar to
grade 2 braille, but has about a dozen or so extra contractions as I
understand it. I heard from the Ohio Vision Center about it so I'm
pretty sure my source is reliable. Beyond that I don't know much more.
However, you are right there is a computer braille, but as far as I
know that isn't grade 3.

These corporations treat their call center employees the same as they treat

that make the whole stronger, so how about taking care to retain that
strength by taking good care of those little pieces?

Tom: As far as USA Games Entertainment goes, thanks for taking care of the

around my country, the United States, I've found myself living in a
corperation owned state were it is a dog eat dog world. Every major
corperation and bank has the attitude it is their God given right to
rip everyone off and not pay for it.

Hi Lori,
Like I just wrote in my last message I really don't know of any place
where the generic Sapi versions of the Scansoft voices can be located

I like the idea of having the beginner level as a training mode if the gamer

Hi Dark,
Lol! Actually, I do see your point. I think the compromise may be to
add a training mode for beginners. With Shades of Doom, Tank
Commander, etc when you select the lowest difficulty level you are
prompted if you want training mode. I could do the same thing with
MOTA. While training mode is on it will announce where traps are, but
if you select intermediate, advanced, or expert you won't get that
option meaning you really must be an expert or advanced player to win.
Same could be done for the suggestion to light a torch or something.
I've noticed that gets to be annoying at times, and could be converted
over to a training mode feature. What do you think?

Pluss, this gives a nice distinguishing factor to the gameplay betwene
different difficulties, insuring that playing on higher levels is not
just a

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Scansoft voices

Hi Lori,
Yes, you are right that Windows 7 does have a better Sapi voice called
Anna. It is better than Mike, Mary, and Sam. However, it still isn't
as good as the Scansoft Real Speak voices or the ATT Natural voices
in my opinion.

HTH

through Jaws. As I see it companies take advantage of their customers, if
we buy a product we pay the money therefore it should be up to us what we
do

with it. On the other hand Microsoft should be giving out better Sappi

Hi Lori,
Like I just wrote in my last message I really don't know of any place
where the generic Sapi versions of the Scansoft voices can be located

2010-05-12 Thread dark
Actually tom as I said, that's stil a pretty good schedule when considdering
that it takes developers like gma, Draconis and such a couple of years to
come up with a new game.

Entombed's developement has been staggeringly quick, but even that has
taken a solid two years of work from initial writing of the engine, and
there are stil several bugs to be ironed out. So the speculation of roughly
a game in six months (given testing, debugging, finding sounds etc), seems
really quite good going in terms of release schedules.

Hi,
What we have hear is a
smaller verison of the engine, and before i do my next project I'll
have to add some of the 3d commands and update the A.I. system for an
FPS game.

Besides, I must confess now that portable audio formats are so much easier

Hi Lori,
Yep. Sure is. It has been around for a few years, but grade 2 is stil
the standard for most braille publications because many braille users
haven't updated their braille skills and still are not aware of the
new braille contractions. However, grade 3 is now being taught to new

Re: [Audyssey] Mysteries of the Ancients Beta 12 Released

2010-05-12 Thread dark

Well tom, it depends upon how extensive you want this option to be.

a training mode as in shades where the monsters don't move which finishes
after the first level,. seems a different idea from say having certain help
features and difficulty level tweaks in the main game, sinse obviously you
couldn't be allowd to play through the entire game with unmoving monsters
and obviously announced traps.

I do like the idea of beginner or easy having changes in gameplay though as
I said, sinse mastering the game without those changes provides extra
challenge at higher levels.

so for instance on beginner you could get double amo pick up from packs (not
unlimited that'd be a cheat, just more plentiful amo so you can work out
weapon range), announcements of all traps and gaps, and infinite burning
torches.

On easy, you go back to normal amounts of amo and normal torch use, but keep
the trap warnings.

Intermediate you lose the trap warnings accept for firepits.

Expert you get no warnings and need to do everything by sound.

a setup something like that would hopefully have the desired effect, and
insure that there was a range of difficulty levels which players could go
through progressively.

Hi Dark,
What do you think?

insures that experts have to truely master positioning and jumps. I
personally think it'd be wrong if the game can be finished on expert with
this option on.

Pluss, this gives a nice distinguishing factor to the gameplay betwene
different difficulties, insuring that playing on higher levels is not
just a

case of doing the same thing as on lower ones, but with more hard hitting
enemies, thus insuring a longer play time in mastering this game.

This is as I said though, just a personal view, I won't exactly be going

Hi Lori,
Well, if we are really honest about it though companies like Microsoft
and Nuance are out to rip everyone off.

Hi Lori,
Yes, you are right that Windows 7 does have a better Sapi voice called
Anna. It is better than Mike, Mary, and Sam. However, it still isn't
as good as the Scansoft Real Speak voices or the ATT Natural voices
in my opinion.
One way to resolve this

there seams to be a universal change in the way Nuance does business

their Scansoft products like Omnipage apparently the voices only work
with Omnipage and nothing else. If you get them with Jaws or Openbook

like Text Aloud, News Aloud, and Weather Aloud. If you buy a GPS with
them on them they only work on that GPS device of course. In short,
there seams to be a universal change in the way Nuance does business

seam to be a way to license and use them as a standard generic Sapi

Hi Lori,
Yes, you are right that Windows 7 does have a better Sapi voice called
Anna. It is better than Mike, Mary, and Sam. However, it still isn't
as good as the Scansoft Real Speak voices or the ATT Natural voices
in my opinion.
Basic 6 runtime library and DirectX libraries which restores support
on Windows 7 for Visual Basic

I suspect I'd need a check list to consult, but whether the Grade three

 Hi Lori,
Yep.
Lol!

 Hi Charles,
Are you crazy? Something this huge you can't braille financially
speaking. We are talking several boxes of 8-1/2 by 11 braille paper
just to print the code once. Since we are talking almost daily changes
to the program I would be constantly brailling out revisions which
would cost serious money. Plus let's not forget this all would be
grade 1 braille, not grade 2 or grade 3 braille, which means no
contractions etc to save space. Since programming depends largely on
symbols, unusual variable names, and math formulas grade 1 is the way
 it has to be.

 Smile.

Hi,
Yeah, although Microsoft Office is an unfair comparison since it is in
effect several different programs rather than any specific program.
Now, you want to say something like Final Fantasy 13 then you are
talking a game that is probably well over 100,000 lines of code since
RPG games are usually the most complex to create given the amount of
variables changes in the game state.

The flaw I have with this is, how do you intend to work out the torch
problem? I'm sure it wouldn't be infinitely difficult, but if you have an
infinitely burning torch, then all the torches you'll pick up during the
game seem pointless. The other thing is that I only play the easy difficulty
because of the difficulty of the monsters, and I'd have to commit suicide
for the sole purpose of not hearing look out! every time I end up by a

in the programs menu, though I think it should only apply for easy and
normal.

a training mode as in shades where the monsters don't move which finishes

I do like the idea of beginner or easy having changes in gameplay though as

challenge at higher levels.

so for instance on beginner you could get double amo pick up from packs (not

unlimited that'd be a cheat, just more plentiful amo so you can work out
weapon range), announcements of all traps and gaps, and infinite burning

Beware the Grue!

 Hi Dark,
What do you think?

insures that experts have to truely master positioning and jumps. I
personally think it'd be wrong if the game can be finished on expert with
 this option on.

Pluss, this gives a nice distinguishing factor to the gameplay betwene
different difficulties, insuring that playing on higher levels is not
 just a
case of doing the same thing as on lower ones, but with more hard hitting
enemies, thus insuring a longer play time in mastering this game.

This is as I said though, just a personal view, I won't exactly be going
 on
a massive vendetta if it doesn't make it into the game and a toggle
 switch
 is decided upon,.

[Audyssey] types of braille - Re: Mysteries of the Ancients Beta 12 Released

2010-05-12 Thread Charles Rivard
Grade 1 braille is the first grate of braille learned, in which what you
read is spelled out letter by letter, with no contractions. Computer
braille is written as grade one braille for the most part, but also has
symbols indicating things like What you're about to read is the beginning
of a line of information shown on the computer monitor., the text is
continued on the next line., This is the end of the computer braille. and
so on. I personally find computer braille a waste, as all they would have
to do would be to put it in quotes. They also change some of the symbols
needlessly.

Hi Charles,
No, they did not change them needlessly at all. The first thing to realize
is that computer Braille is in nimith code mathematically, which is more
practical since you don't have to use the number sign. Take the parenthesis
for example, now we not only do we have open and close parentheses, but we
had to change them because of the number 7.

Hi,
I'd highly recommend that you don't buy the Scansoft Real Speak voices
from Nextup.com and here is why.
Go to Freedom Scientific, guess what, all of the
new Scansoft voice downloads only work with Jaws and not anything
else. So what is really going on here?

on the game they could have you travel in a tomb and the fight the boss

Hi Muhammed,
Yes, i know that. However, you seamed to have missed the fact that cd
no longer ships with newer versions of Jaws. Gone, history, no more.
Now, all they offer is those downloadable pieces of crap that only
work with Jaws. As I am more of a Window-Eyes user, not a Jaws user
per say, I am extremely offended by that change in polacy. if I buy it
I better be able to use it with whatever screen reader I choose

Without giving away the location of traps and treasures, maybe you could
list them as, for example, added traps on level 1 or added weapons in
level 3? Now, to be ornery, to see who pays attention, you could add
something like this to the change log: added traps and treasures to level
4. Don't mention that levels 3 or 4 have been added.

 Hi Dark,
Oh, that's okay. I do understand where you are coming from. I didn't
mean to sound quite so irritable yesterday, but sometimes it does get
to be slightly frustrating to recieve several messages in a row on a
particular bug or problem with the game or a product. Especially, when
the changes.txt file is there to tell customers what has been fixed,
and what hasn't been fixed. If a particular bug isn't in the
changes.txt file than it is safe to say that problem hasnt' yet been
addressed for one reason or another.
Perhaps one way to solve this problem is to ship a shortened todo.txt
file with the game so customers can see what changes are scheduled for
the next release ahead of time. That would save us both duplicating
requests and scheduling in advance. However, as I said though it would
have to be a shortened version of the todo list as there are things in
there I wouldn't necessarily want the public to view such as the
location of a new trap, or some plans for a hidden lever/pressure
switch that should be found by the player. Such hints would give too
many secrets away from the paying customers. Plus I sometimes often
change my todo list midway through development as a bug or problem
crops up during public testing that take spriority over whatever is in
 the todo file.
Anyway, it is funny you should mention the pause key. As it turns out
it isn't working in beta 12, and I never noticed as I never use that
command much myself. So I completely understand how a developer can
overlook something like that. If the developer doesn't use it, doesn't
really need it, it takes someone else to point it out to him/her that
the pause key is not working. I imagine the same bug was present in
beta 11 as well, but nobody noticed until now. So, yes, we developers
do have a way of overlooking the obvious stuff sometimes.
Just talking to Phil yesterday showed me the proof of that. Here I had
designed a speed attribute into the engine to give each and every
player and enemy a maximum speed, and yet never used it in Mysteries
of the Ancients. I just set all of the enemies default speed to 1
which is pretty slow. It would have made more sense to make the
centaurs and harpies move fairly fast while skeletons and zombies
fairly slow. Sounds obvious now, but in the haste of developing the
game, porting the engine from .Net to C++, etc something that miner
never even entered my mind. Was too much to do than to think about
weather or not this or that enemy should move quickly or slowly.

 Cheers!
