Re: [Audyssey] A mark of excellence in a developer.
Hi, There is a few problems with having an unlimited party. The most significant is that you can only have up to 99 items in your inventory. So if you have too many characters, you cannot put enough armor on them, or give them enough weapons to wield. And yet still have potions, scrolls, and other necessary items with you. Plus, if you play in morlal mode, you will never make it on the top 50 scoreboard. In order to make most of these cheats work, you would probably be playing in normal mode. Lasstly, these cheats just add a different dimention to the game. But this only lessens the difficulty. so to play the game in which it was created offers the best game play. that's another reason I look forward to jason including larger party size in the game, sinse then he can balance things accordingly, scoring and hopefully enemy party size included. Re: [Audyssey] Python resources
possibly somewhat o/t Hi Thomas, Thank goodness that not all programming languages are exactly the same as C. Well if they were, they would be C. But seriously I have always liked a Basic programming language and the C languages just look like gobbledygook to me. So if even Basic languages did everything just like C, I would probably have never taken up and learned my self all of the different Basic languages that I have used over the years. I guess that not one thing fits everyone. Programming language in this case. BFN - Original Message - Hi Chris, Yeah, that's exactly my problem as well. You spend x number of years learning languages like C, C++, Java, etc and you think you know it all and along comes Python having all these array types such as lists, dictionaries, sequences, etc all with miner differences and I can't figure out what exactly what I need or what equals what I already know. Its back translating sometimes from a more advanced concept to a less advanced one sometimes. this was always my gripe with languages like VB 6. For instance, in Java and C++ you can extend or inherit classes etdc. When using VB 6 its classes were more simplified and didn't have all the features of something like Java or C++. Its like, hay, I'm an advanced programmer here. Where is this or that feature I know exists in C++ but not VB 6? Same kind of issue applies with Python. Its not so much that the language is bad, but it has its own way of doing things that drives a triditionally trained programmer slightly nuts. Its like going back and relearning everything all over again, because Python seems to ignore things a C++ programmer takes for granted. They take away a concept I know such as arrays and replaces it with three or four new alternatives. Like why can't you guys just give me a basic array and be done with it? Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Developing a game
Fascinating description, Thomas. Cheers, Imbar Ms Imbar Golt im...@netvision.net.il - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: kimfr...@verizon.net; Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, April 25, 2011 5:54 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Developing a game Hi Kim, Well, you are right that developing a game requires several different talents/skills when creating a game from start to finish. First, and foremost the developer has to have an active imagination and have fairly decent creative writing skills. Second, there are a number of technical skills such as learning a programming language as well as learning a variety of APIs for handling input, sound, music, speech output, whatever. A developer may need to know various programming techniques such as artificial intelligence which can cover several books in and of itself. If a developer wishes to add something like 3d graphics then that would involve some fairly decent math and physics skills in order to render the graphics on screen correctly. So programming games certainly rrequires skills from both a programming and non-programming nature just to produce a game of any real quality. As to your questions I'll answer them in a question and answer format below. Question: I'm very curious to know how developers go about making a game, particularly those games for those folks who enjoy role playing? If one is blind and doing the developing, I'm wondering what is done to give the world verisimilitude? Answer: Well, by verisimilitude I assume you mean seem realistic/probable its like any other roll playing game. A game developer would build in stat checks, rolls, using a common rule set like d20 to figure out if an action succeeded or failed in game. However, in a computer program all stat checks would be handled internally foregoing any need to pull out your own dice and do your own rolls and calculations. Question: How is developing a RPG similar to and different from writing a novel or short story? Answer: Well, as far as the non-technical part goes they are very similar. Before a developer starts programming a game like an rpg he or she will need to write the back story for each major campaign or adventure and write up the descriptions of everyone and everything in the game. A lot of this initial writing will become the majority of the text you would include in your rpg game. For instance, consider the following text. You are standing in the small sea-side town of Southport. As you stand there gazing at the small village you can detect the salty sent of the sea not far away. There are a number of people passing in and out of the buildings along this street. What would you like to do? Visit the SouthPort In Visit the Local Taverin Visit the Docks Travel Somewhere Else You'd be surprised how much time you can save by having all these textual descriptions of people, places, and things written up in advance before doing the actual coding. So in that respect its kind of like writing a short story, but its all from a second person point of view. However, unlike doing creative writing there is the technical side to creating an rpg game. There is quite a bit of coding involved here, and of course you will need something like the Dungeons and Dragons handbooks to actually create a realistic enough system for handling stat checks and things like that. Since the DND guides are fairly standard I'd use those as an example for doing combat, skill checks, and other rpg elements that requires a dice throw. As it happens I'm working on a rpg game myself, one based on the DC Universe, and I'm using the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 handbooks to kind of help with the stat checks, building custom classes, and things like that I need to make the game somewhat realistic. For instance, since the Flash can move at the speed of light I obviously set his dexterity to 18 the maximum allowable in DND. That would give him an extra 4 points to any dice roll requiring speed/agility.I also created a custom class called Speadster which gives him an extra 2 points to a dice roll for speed as that's his unique special power. See how the DND rule handbooks can help with creating a custom rpg? HTH --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Developing a game
Hmmm I am not a dev, but I have a fair idea on what is involved. Take soundrts, this is a grid based environment with letters a-z at the the vertical axis and 1 through till hmmm probably infinate numbers on the horisontal. so 26 by whatever. You have objects and free spaces to build objects. You have types of object, building, troops, etc. There is a stats system for dammage and such. There is a currency usually gold, wood and metal for building and mines and other areas to harvest these materials which will become free space after all the resource is used. You will have enemies, monsters usually or other troops etc. Ofcause this is way basic. There are stats engines for just about everything from dammage, resourceses and such to scores and other things that are to numerous to mention here depending on the type of the game. Next randomised values for just about everything except for object and troop health unless thats needed and also fixed things and maybe a combonation of such. And thats it. If you have played dnd, or even more basic than that a board game like chess or drafts or something, you should get the idea of the grid system. Ofcause not all rpgs have dice roles. If you play gamebooks on www.ffproject.com you may get the idea of a simple rpg, ffproject does calculate most of the stuff randomly for you as if you role the dices. So this helps. This is about all I know from a gamers prospective I am sure there is more than this here. And there are more than I on here that still play physical games, my life as it is is quite dull as I have no one to really play with or the time at any case. Naturally you would also be able to play against the computer on many difficulty levels, but the main atraction of the game would be that you could play online. Re: [Audyssey] Found two more gamepads.
Hi Ron, Since I have never owned either one of these gamepads I can't really tell you how well they perform but I can say as a developer that joystick support in games is usually pretty generic. All of the real support/handling of the device is either through Microsoft's DirectInput library or the new XInput library. All the same one feature I'd check on if I were you is if it has duel DirectInput and XInput support. Some devices only support one or the other meaning you'd have to upgrade or buy a new one if you get a game that doesn't support one of those libraries. The Logitech F510 supports both which is one of the reasons why I recommend it as a basic joystick/gamepad device. Re: [Audyssey] Developing a game
Hi Kim, Well, those are certainly some valid points. You are right many roll playing games are all too often about kill, hunt for treasure, and kill some more. I usually like games with some real exploration in them. I don't mind fighting, but would like to see games with a little more exploration to them. Something more like Indiana Jones where you have to over come traps, figure out puzzles, and things like that more than hacking and slicing your way through hords of enemies. One game I initially liked when it started out is called Sryth. Its an online roll playing game, set in a DND type universe, and it started out pretty decent. Unfortunately, over the last year or two the gm has been adding a lot of content that is simply little more than grinding for stats. I.E. adventures you can play over and over again, doing the same thing over and over again, to help build up skill points etc. That doesn't apeal to me at all. I'm into the game for the adventures, the quests, the exploration not the fighting. As for the DND source books you are right. Sometimes the classes do need to be better defined. I've had a heck of a time modifying existing classes for my DC Comics game as they didn't really fit the kind of characters I was dealing with. The closest was Zatana, a heroic sorceress, but the idea of having to memorize x number of spells etc just didn't fit. Zatana in the DC Comics is an extremely powerful character and has a variety of magical powers. Plus she has a number of magical items she uses to increase her abilities. I found all of the magic classes in the DND handbooks either not defined enough or lacking some power or ability I felt Zatana would need. Plus given that the DND handbooks is designed for armor classes etc a lot of that really didnt' fit either. In DC Comics you get a few characters such as Steel who wheirs armor, and Wonder Woman has her magic bracelets but armor isn't really an issue for most super heroes or super villains. Somebody like Superman is practically indestructable without armor so doesn't need it. Cheers! On 4/24/11, Kim Friedman kimfr...@verizon.net wrote: Hi, Thomas, this sounds very interesting to me. I can see how handbooks from DD might be helpful, but I confess I have a real quibble with them with regard to classes of character. (I suppose class might be like type. Where does a witch differ from a sorceress, and how does a sorceress differ from a mage? You see what I mean. The subject of class of character isn't deep enough nor detailed enough for my liking. A cavalier comes from the old French and meant a noble who was a dab hand at riding horses. Also, the goals for DD are too thin for me. To my mind they are: Get treasure, kill monsters, and keep yourself from getting killed. There doesn't seem to be much intrinsic values for the characters such as Gain insight and knowledge about (name what you like), gaining further levels of experience by cooperation or standing up against someone who is doing something detrimental, etc. Will close for now. They've taken a lot of the fun out of slot machines, especially in California the last time I was there. Instead of placing coins or bills into the machine, you press a button for each coin or bill. Instead of pulling a handle, you press a button. And you don't get a lot of noise, no coins dropping into the bin, but just a slip of paper when you choose to cash out. Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t
Hi Hayden, Well, your confusion is do in large part to the fact you are comparing two different meanings of the word runtime. In general the word runtime simply means a dependency or compiled library or executable rrequired by a certain program. This meaning of runtime has absolutely nothing to do with if a programming language is a native programming language or a runtime programming language. As I'm certain what I'm saying has royally confused you let me explain in more detail. When we talk about programming languages they are generally divided up into three basic catagories: low level, intermediate level, and high level. Each of these have advantages and disadvantages and are used for different applications of programming. First, we have the low level programming languages like Assembly which can be compiled into what we call a native application. What that means is the Assembly code you typed into Notepad is converted to machine language, also called binary, which is simply a huge string of ones and zeros. These ones and zeros, binary, work by sending on/off pulses to the CPU. Every time the state is 1 it is on and every time a 0 is sent that is off. If you string enough of these ones and zeros together you can form words, graphics, music, etc. I'm not going to explain the ins and outs of binary theory, but its enough to say that anything you write in Assembly can be converted directly into machine language your CPU can understand. Therefore it is a native application and is usually very specific to the type of platform and hardware it was designed for. Second, we have the intermediate languages such as C and C++. This is what most developers use today because you can still compile programs into machine language, but the language is a lot easier to understand than Assembly code. It allows for some more abstract ideas such as classes, structures, unions, pointers, etc all that helps the programmer communicate with the computer in something he/she can understand. However, unlike Assembly a C++ compiler breaks the compilation process down into two steps. First it converts C++ into assembly, and then links the Assembly objects into a binary file the CPU can understand. Finally, we have the high level languages where Python, Java, Perl, and the .Net languages come in. These languages are often very readable, very easy to understand, look the most like human speech, but they usually get compiled to what we call an intermediate language. In other words instead of getting a binary file compiled into machine code it is still mostly human readable, and it requires a seperate program, usually written in C++, to execute the code. For example, python.exe, java.exe, perl.exe, etc are native C/C++ applications that simply executes the instructions stored in your Java, Python, or Perl application. These runtime languages are simply that. They require a third-party runtime program like Java, Python, Perl, .Net, etc to be installed to run were a true native C/C++ application can run without any third-party applications. To clarify the point. The Linux kernel, vmlinuz, is written in C. It boots the operating system as well as handles all the low level drivers. It can do that because C doesn't need anything else but itself to run. You couldn't do that with Python, Java, Perl, whatever because you can't convert the code in to machine language. They still require a specific C or C++ application to be installed to run. Now, I am able to answer your question more directly. In the case of something like the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime they aren't talking about an actual Runtime environment like Java, Python, Perl, etc but a set of dependencies required by apps compiled by Visual C++. The difference here is that if I wanted too I could take my code and compile it with MinGW or some other C++ compiler and never use the MSVC Runtime libraries at all. Those MSVC++ Runtime libraries are just libraries most Windows developers use to access various things when programming Windows apps. That has nothing to do with weather C++ can be compiled to machine language or compiled to an intermediate language the way Java, Python, .Net, etc are. You were quite litterally mixing apples and oranges here from a programming/technical point of view. HTH On 4/25/11, Hayden Presley hdpres...@hotmail.com wrote: HI Thomas, Something that has confused me is this: obviously I am not following what native binary means but if C++ is not a runtime language then why do you end up needing to have C++ runtime libraries on your system to run an application written in C++? [Audyssey] A Huge Letter of Appreciation
Hello to my fellow gamers. I first want to thank Kay for her help with the USB controller. I also want to thank Kay for her explanation of the layout for the unit and also for the link for down loading the software for windows 64 if needed. Not only I, but other subscribers who are also looking for a newer up to date controller can also thank Kay for answering my questions out on the list for others to see and to use as well. The reason why I didn't want to go back to Logitech and purchase the F 510 is because they probably have a flag up against my name since I returned the F 710. I also would like to thank Tom for his Expert recommendation on educating not only me but others on picking up something that is a duel platform. What was nice when I was researching and found the Philips 2909 was that someone already tested it with the hand to ear products and it was working with those products. But this time, I'll have to take my fellow gamers word on their opinion of this USB controller and to give my opinion when it comes if it works or not to weed it out of the list of USB controllers. Now I'll see if I can't find the Logitech f510 locally. Many Many Thanks. Hi Imbar, Actually, you misunderstood my comments about Srith. The game I was talking about Sryth, always did have some fighting/combat in it, but there was a lot of exploration as well to make up for the violence and combat. However, the most recent additions to the game are almost exclusively combat/fighting oriented with very little to do with any exploration or puzzle solving. This is what I don't like about the recent versions of the game. Anyway, if you want some games that don't have a lot of violence in them you might want to try Packman Talks and Sarah and the Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry by PCS Games. PCS Games also has a game called Super Dog's Bone Hunt. All of these games seemed to be aimed towards children to young adult without hacking, slashing, or shooting your way through the games. I don't know. Rhaknar's Mad still puts a lot of emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving. In Packman you mainly have to avoid the ghosts, and in Sarah you can stun but not kill the ghosts with Sarah's magic wand. I think this might be something you are looking for. Cheers! Hi all, I am just writing to ask whether any of you would be interested in an online version of the Showdown game? Naturally you would also be able to play against the computer on many difficulty levels, but the main atraction of the game would be that you could play online. I would use some techniques to bypass firewalls so that even people behind routers could connect to one another, and the game would most definitely use human speech. Definitely interested... I haven't played showdown in ages, and I miss standing around the table and watching people go at it. One request though... would it be possible to make it a bit more complex? Including but not limitted to having the pace move a bit faster? lol. Thanks. [Audyssey] how to stop the whining: was Re: Derek the Claric
Well, you know how to stop all that whining and complaining? Simple. Just abandon your game. Then you'll hear how great and wonderful it is. As much as I like Self District for example, it's nothing compared to current projects such as MOTA or even Battle Zone--but since it's gone people want it bad. I remember the big deal people were making about Science Invasion. Then I played it and thought how much better that new game is--can't remember its name, but it has a dog that can guide you to different places, and everything is round--and no doors. You don't hear that game mentioned on list hardly at all--people too busy praising and looking for Science Invasion. Of course, I'm not really suggestion that developers abandon their games, I'm just being sarcastic. Have to point that out though or we'll hear complaints about this post. Re: [Audyssey] Python resources, possibly somewhat o/t
Well, as for me, the only reason I want to learn a new language is because the 3d audio for Directx with vb6 sucks... real bad... and Doppler doesn't work, and neither do the sound cones. I'm just not really up for learning a whole new language honestly. There are things I really want to see programmed, but I do a lot more than program games, and I still haven't come up with a good protection system for Phrase Madness... or whatever the final name of the game will be. I like the idea of the interactivity of Python. I'm just not sure I'm up to the task of learning it. I also write books and have kids to raise, so I'm not bored to tears any more, the way I was when I was eighteen. So the long and short of it is, if I could get some good, solid, foundational code--like Justin did, in another language I might experiment--tweak it here, change something there, and after a while have a whole new and better game. Till then I'll be using both vb6 and Basic4PPC, and probably Basic for Droid if I ever get rich enough to buy one of those lol. I rarely post to list here, but I do check in from time to time, so please don't take my lack of posts as any indication that I don't stay in tune with the community I partially serve. I realize thomas is seen as a voice of authority here on list, but I think on this subject, he is very very wrong. Thomas has put down other programming languages before as well, such as VB 6 for being outdated, etc. but I say let the work stand for itself. look at what jim kitchen and David Greenwood have done with vb 6, regarding python, look at sound RTS, or qwittter, on and on. To say python is only for amateur programmers is ridiculous to be sure. Also, I have to question thomases authority on this subject, as he has yet to release a game for profit, so up to this point, he is by definition an amateur programmer himself. I realize MOTA will be sold for a profit, and Thomas has collected money for pre sales, but to this point, no final product has ben released for commercial sale, thus seriously diluting his point about professional development with python in my opinion, especially considering the vast number of projects out there that have been released for a profit using python. This post isn't to flame on Thomas, he has worked hard on his games, most very especially MOTA, but for him to crap on python on this list given the attention his posts receive is irresponsible and not well thought out in my opinion. From what I've seen and tested, I don't think python would have any trouble running MOTA, or most any other audio game out there, given current system specs. And I am not talking out of my rear end here either. I've done one of the most complex audio games out there with Rail Racer, I know what I speak of. But to me, the most important things involved in creating a good audio game, or any other program for that matter is being an inventive, efficient and dedicated developer. No matter what language you use, if your idea sucks, it won't matter. If your skills suck, it won't matter. If your dedication sucks, it won't matter. The skills learned by teaching yourself a language such as python will carry over to any other language, picking up the syntax is the easy part, learning how to efficiently make code do what you want, that’s the magic, and learning to think that way will be greatly advanced by using python or any other language for that matter. I want to reiterate, this post isn't here to flame anyone else, but I know a lot of you guys on list here follow thomas' posts closely, and as a fellow quote unquote professional developer, I just think he is dead wrong about the downside of python, and I would hate to see someone not use python because they have heard it can't do what they want. check the programming options out yourself, and make a balanced opinion for what works for you, your idea and implementation will be the reason your game succeeds or fails, not the language you choose. Lord knows, we need as many creative game developers out there as we can get for the audio game community, and no matter what you use to create it, if its fun

I would use some techniques to bypass firewalls so that even people behind routers could connect to one another, and the game would most definitely use human speech. Hi Ken, Are you talking about Extant? That's the only one I can think of that fits that description As for that, there is a big difference; there is really nothing at all to do in that game vs something like Science Invasion which does begin with a kind of storyline.
Hi Ken, There is an alternative to DirectX. There is FMOD Ex which you could include in free games for no cost to the developer. It only has t be licensed if it is apart of a commercial title or integrated into a commercial game engine etc. It is a Windows com component so you can use it with VB 6, C# .net, VB .Net, Java, or just about anything else that can use Windows com components. It has very decent 3d positioning, DSP effects, and relaly is unmatched when it comes to audio APIS. I'm using it right now, the Linux version, to upgrade my G3D Engine for Linux. On 4/25/11, The Addictor kenwdow...@neo.rr.com wrote: Well, as for me, the only reason I want to learn a new language is because the 3d audio for Directx with vb6 sucks... real bad... and Doppler doesn't work, and neither do the sound cones.
