Re: [Audyssey] General Gaming Info
Hi Brian, Right. I think they will be complex and stimulating enough for your study. Especially, if the player in question plays using audio only. I just merely wanted to point out though that not all VI gamers rely on the audio environment itself for input. There is quite a bit of spoken feedback as well that may or may not be in real time. Hi, Just a slight correction. The demo for Entombed has 7 floors not 8. Cheers! On 7/29/11, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Bryan. Given what your looking for, castaways, even though just in developement might fit the bill, as might time of conflict. Another game, though more rpg than stratogy you might considder is entombed from http://www.blind-games.com/ The game is an audio roguelike rpg involving crawling a dungeon. Battles are detailed, there is a lot to explore (even the free version is 8 floors deep, and the full one goes down 25 massive floors), with 17 player races and 20 or so jobs. then, each character has two jobs not one, and your party is comprized of three characters altogether, with a random dungeon and enemies to get through, multiple unique bosses, and a very engaging turn based battle system requiring a lot of stratogy. I think Entombed is probably the audio game I've spent most time playing generally, and certainly you'd get 50 hours out of it, especially if you buy the full version (running through the game even once will take probably 5-10 hours, and then there are all the different random combinations of races etc). Time of conflict might also be a good one here, as might the audio first person adventure game Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizarrdry from pcs, sinse that has a massive amount of exploration, a very engaging plot and characters, and a lot of stuff to do iincluding side quests, battling magical creatures and learning spells. though more an adventure than an fps you might wish to take a look at www.pcsgames.net. [Audyssey] Castaways, frustrated with the ship
Hi all, I miserably lost the game when everything was ok! Luckily, I saved it so I can undo my error, but I need your help to work it out. I built the ship, I have some 6 knights of 24 people, I have around 150 meet, 120 bread and some wine, and about 60 vegetables though I can't remember everything exactly. The peasants bring the food into the tavern, not onto the ship. I close the tavern, they bring the food onto the ship, and start starving. Re: [Audyssey] Possible Bug in Castaways
Until I saw your saved game Bill, I hadn't even thought about someone stripping every last resource from the map! Hahaha, clearly your game had been going for a long time and you had a lot of stone masons and miners. When the next version releases, you won't be able to actually run completely out of resources. If you use up everything on the map, your people will Very! slowly still gather resources, but they will have to wander off of the map to do it. It will serve as a punishment, because it will be so much slower, but it will at least keep people from being essentially defeated when they can never gain more lumber, bricks, or metal, that they may need to finish the mission. I'll give some thought to your ideas for grouping the buildings. I'm actually in the process of coding hotkeys for assigning jobs. Enough people have brought that up lately, that it has moved to the top of my to-do list, lol. You can destroy buildings by selecting them and pressing Delete. This will also work to cancel a new construction that you realize is not what you wanted to build. I think having people drop their current task immediately could have negative effects on how the game is played, but I'll keep it in mind. The Sapi messages were originally set up to not interrupt each other, and it was a nightmare haha, believe me. Smarter messages is pretty high up on my to-do list, but I just haven't had time yet, and it is a rather time consuming task to do. When it comes to online play, I am still working on a competitive mode. It will allow players to support their chosen kingdom, working to build it up toward victory, while attacking other to beat down the competition. Lol, I guess they were scrounging around for more stone to work with, so never returned for job reassignment. Not sure how I managed to use up all my stone, but my settlement is fairly large, and is surrounded by goblins. The thought of running out of resources had crossed my mind, but I didn't realize there were hard limits coded in. I can see how limiting resources could come in useful in future missions, or maybe in the higher difficulty settings. If limited resources are factored in, messages warning that the resources are becoming harder to find, or the resources are gone, would be extremely helpful. Here are a few more suggestions for future improvements. Feel free to take them or leave them: * While the current free-style missions are extremely fun, I really enjoyed the story-style missions of Lunamals. These also could help to ease new players into learning the game mechanics. * Finding a particular building in a large settlement is a bit cludgy with the current interface. One way to speed this up a bit would be to announce the coordinates after the building type instead of before it. You could also provide an alternate control for grouping all your buildings by type, maybe in an expandable tree-view. * Job assignments can also take a bit of time when many different types of jobs are available. Another possible way for quickly assigning jobs would be to allow the player to type in the first letter or letters of the job name. * Way to destroy accidentally constructed buildings * Way to cause a person to drop what they are doing and start on a new task immediately. * Way to prevent SAPI messages from interrupting each other. * Smarter message delivery algorithms. Not really sure how this could be improved, but it would be helpful to keep from hearing about each individual goblin movement, for example, but to hear about further encroachment onto a player's land. * online cooperative and/or competitive play Keep up the good work; your games are awesome! --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] game complexity was, General Gaming Info
Hi haiden. Yes, in the original packman you can see all the maze and get an overview of what the ghosts are doing. This turns it much more into a game of reflex and avoidance, eg trying to stay away from the areas where ghosts are, or nipping in quickly to get dots from another direction. This is totally different to packman talks, sinse in packman talks you must memorize the maze, and also physically run from ghosts while keeping that memory in mind. dynaman is even worse sinse the mazes are not all the same, but randomized. hi Milo. To build up food for the ship, you need to have enough farms and hun ters to make sure your accumulating more food than your actually eating. Even a large amount of food can be eaten pretty quickly by many people if your not producing a surpluss. Try closing the ship and Looking at your food over time and seeing if the amount is going up or down. if it is going up, then you've got surpluss food that can be loaded onto the ship. if going down then yu have a serious problem and your people will eventually starve, so you need to increase the amount of food your producing. Also, make certain you've got plenty of peasants and a cook, sinse otherwise people will starve. As peasants transport barrels and grind flour, once you start food and wine making, you'll need to make certain you've got enough peasants to handle the extra work. Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, frustrated with the ship
Hi, That is a good question. For one thing it looks like your vegetable production is low so you might want to assign a couple of extra farmers and then start changing everyone else non-essential over to peasants. Thing here is you need enough food to stock the ship, keep the tavern running, and enough peasants to stock the ship and the tavern at the same time. Otherwise your people will starve or the ship won't get stocked. HTH On 7/30/11, Milos Przic milos.pr...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, I miserably lost the game when everything was ok! Hi, Right. Classic Packman and Packman Talks are different from a strategy and reflex point of view. As Dark has pointed out in the classic 1982 Packman game and modern remakes you see the entire level as a whole. That gives you something of an advantage being able to see where all the ghosts are at once and you can skirt around one of the rings full of ghosts to gobble up some dots somewhere else until the ghosts vacate that area. When the ghosts move on, clear the area, you can choose the safest route in the maze to sneek in and eat the dots in that area. You really have a tactical/strategic advantage being able to see everything from a top-down perspective like that. With Packman Talks you only are aware of the objects in your immediate area. Perhaps it is a tunnel on your left or several dots ahead, but you usually have no clue what is around that corner until you turn. By that time you might just run face first into Pinky and the gang, and have to blow the area in a hurry, or as they say put an egg in your shoe and beat it. I have to agree with Dark the audio game version of Packman in some ways is more fun and entertaining than the classic mainstream game I grew up playing in the 80's. There is a sense of mystery and unexpected challenge in sneeking around the maze hoping you won't just run into the ghosts on accident. The dot detecter is another nifty feature as it forces you to hunt for dots where a sighted player could just see them. Cheers! On 7/30/11, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi haiden. Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, frustrated with the ship
Hi Bryan, Well, this is where the strategy part of the game comes in. In my last game I had something like 155 loaves of bread before I started stocking my ship for the voyage. I only had one wheat farm, one mill, and one bakery, but I eventually managed to employ two bakers so while one might run over to the mill to grind the wheat into flower the other baker will be actively keeping the baking going. There are also some extra perks you can select in the options menu to bake more bread with a single sack of flower if you are really stuck on that part of the production but I tend to do alright with bread production. Re: [Audyssey] game complexity was, General Gaming Info
Hi Tom. As an interesting fact, the later game packmania on the pc actually had some of the features of the audio version. Everything was much larger and in isometric view, so you couldn't see the hole maze, in fact you only just saw packman and the tunnels around in four directions (you could see what was in the tunnel immediately north or south of the one you were in but that was it). power pills lasted longer, and because you could come across ghosts at any time, you had the ability to jump over them, though on higher levels the ghosts could also jump as well, which could be very annoying if one was across a wall and came to get you. But in terms of reduced view and memorization Packmania actually did play a litle like packman talks, you even had a litle cumpas at one side of the screen showing the direction of the nearest dots. Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, frustrated with the ship
Green thumb is a favourite perk of mine, but I've found extra farmers handy even when playing without it. I think I've tried all the perks and faults out now, and my personal favourite are union smasher and green thumb, sinse it just is helpful with many areas of production, and my favourite fault is light lunch, sinse it's easily overcome if you build farms first and assign a hunter, and then can play virtually fault free. Dogfood also doesn't seem to have a massive affect on the game, but then again i don't tend to use hunters until I start needing firs, sinse fishermen are better as far as meat goes, thus injuries for hunters aren't too noticeable at that point in the game. The other faults are pretty major each in their own way, all thumbs and trojan man make life much more difficult, while cosy and vedgitarian can completely change the overall mechanics of the game. beware the GRue! Like most things in Castaways however, the answer isn't as cut and dry. So many outside factors can change things, that it can be difficult for 1 person to perfectly mimic the results of another person. The distance the farms are from the storehouse, the different food types you are feeding your farmers, and the perks you've chosen, all have an affect that will give people a slightly different result than each other. [Audyssey] Castaways tome bug
Hi. I don't have a save file sinse unfortunately it is done, but i found the problem when trying to upgrade people with tomes. When trying to upgrade the stone mason I was told that person couldn't be upgraded, however when i was trying to upgrade the carpenter who was lumberjacking at the time I was told the lumberjack had been turned from a stone mason to a stone carver, yet they are now a perminant lumberjack. So, there apparently is the bug. upgrading hunters seemed okay though. Btw, might i suggest upgrade tomes be given on the basis of what job someone has assigned, not the job they are doing currently, sinse oterwise you'll need to wait until a builder is actually building to upgrade them, or they'll just become another serf. Re: [Audyssey] Possible Bug in Castaways
I have to agree with phil. Everything from the pyramids to roman britain and even 16th century houses were torn down so people could knick stone, therefore making all the materials go to waste is a litle unrealistic. As a possibly interesting gameplay point though, maybe this could be a job for the builder, and the more builders doing demolition, the more material you get back. Beware the grue! [Audyssey] Castaways and serfs
Well I've just finished another game on mission 2. I've worked out how to keep cloth up, makes as many serfs as possible! they don't half work fast! Also I've now worked out what rangers do, they stop your knights being killed on raides. My first raide was four knights and a ranger and did 13 yeti, my second was five knights, a soldier and a ranger and that did the job, 13 yeti down and the city destroyed! Actually i was just about to start making wine, and only had 29 adults and 1 child, so was a litle surprised things ended so quickly. either way It was certainly fun again and I'll be looking forward to seeing the next batch of upgrades. As for pvp and attacking others kingdoms, with the way the yeti raides worked there, i can see that as a possibility, though i'd stil prefer cooperative multiplayer and pvp to be separate options, aprticularly if cooperative play is going to be expanded in the future with something like trading resources or goods. to be honest though it's the missions and the complexity of the system i'm enjoying thus far, and am looking forward to seeing what comes next. [Audyssey] castaways version 1.4b, with Jaws support!
Version 1.4b has been posted. If you are a Jaws user, press Tab to finally get rid of the Sapi voice you hate so much! haha. While a person is selected, hold control, and press the letter your desired job begins with. For example, pressing B will assign this person to be a builder, pressing B again will choose baker, and it will continue cycling through jobs that begin with B. I'm still working on getting the game truly ready for translations, but in the mean time everyone can check out the French and Russian translations provided by Florie Bert, and Stacy from klango. Here is how you can use them. In your castaways directory, you will see French.txt and Russian.txt. Pick the one you want to try, and rename it language.txt. That's all! Just start up the game and it should be presented to you in that language. Keep in mind that the mission 2 stuff was added after the translators began working, so you will encounter a few messages that will remain English for now. When you want to go back to using English in the game, just rename the language.txt file back to whatever it was originally. [Audyssey] About the mag
Hi everyone I thought I would send this here to get feedback from this section of the list. This will also go out to the mag only group as well. Granted I know it has been quite some time without an issue. In order to catch up my thoughts were as follows. Send out issue #55 as it stands, then after sifting through the recovered emails send a supplement covering the released games since #54. The potential articles I'll keep until the next issue. I am curious about how often you folks are interested in the mag, true alot of the material shows up here to my chagrin. So how often would be good to wrap it up as an email newsletter? The folks on the mag only naturally haven't seen any of this conversation but I will send this to them as well. Yes I did drop the ball. For many reasons which I may or may not explain but I do sincerely want to keep Audyssey going. My inbox is open for any thoughts you may have. Comments and such are always welcome, #55 will be out tomorrow at the latest, and a further announcement of games once I go through all the recovered emails. Re: [Audyssey] About the mag
Hi Ron. i'm pleased the mag is back. while it's true the announcements in the mag really are duplicated on list or on audiogames.net (though obviously there ar people who do not check those places), for me it's the articals, reviews and editorials that are the interesting point. Having a more formal setting and distribution means that people are more inclined to write seriously and considder what they are writing than just dashing off a quick response. for this reason i'm very happy that the mag is back, and would certainly like it to continue coming out once every few months, though i might suggest that perhaps submissions be a litle more formal and you give us reminders when your looking for stuff, sinse obviously publishing in the mag is something which should be considdered. this is what spag and other web zeense have done, concentrated on more formal submission of materials, and become more like a professional printed magazine. Btw, formal does not equal boring, comedy stuff and funny materials are deffinately good too, I just mean encouraging people to take the time to write and think carefully, including better jokes. Hi Phil. I'm afraid I don't agree. you meaning the group of castaways are on the beach, but you the player are simply viewing the map and selecting a place for the settlement, therefore the view starts with the curser at the most logical place which is top left corner at A1. Hi Dark, I picture the beginning as you are always at the cursor location and your people follow you around as you explore the map. When you want one of your people to start chopping trees you go to the place where they should work and tell them what to do. So starting at J 15 which is land near the water makes perfect sense to me. - Original Message - From: dark d...@xgam.org To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2011 2:17 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] castaways version 1.4b, with Jaws support! I'm sorry Phil, but I actually believe mechanically you pretty much can order your peopel around with the curser anywhere. Just tel someone to be a lumberjack, and they'll automatically run off to the nearest quarry. All the curser does is let you look around the map, and site where you want buildings to be, your people behave entirely independent of it. It is not like say sound rts where you need to tell a peasant to go to a specific wood to chop trees, in castaways your lumberjack will walk off and find his/her own trees. That's why it's where you need to put the sawmill that makes all the difference, not what tree your looking at with the curser when you assign a lumberjack. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, frustrated with the ship
Hi, Me personally, in mission 1 I've had to build 2 vegetable and sometimes 2 vineyards. This way I have enough to go around and fill both the tavern and the boat. If I want to fill the boat faster, I close the tavern until it is almost empty. Then opening it back up doesn't seem to starve anyone because the peasants seem to get right on it and fill the tavern right back up fairly quickly. The other thihing to do is to monitor the supplies being dropped off at the boat. when you get low on supplies, close the boat until the supplies are back up to normal operating levels. BTW, I've noticed something about the boat that is incorrectly stated when building the ship. It says it only needs 50 wood, 18 metal, and 30 cloth. There is no mention of stones. But yet when you build it, it says it needs 18 stones. The documentation also does not mention anything about needing stones. Re: [Audyssey] question about new professions in castaways.
All of the jobs, except cook and bartender, get a 30 percent boost to their speed. Fisherman get the extra fish that they catch. The advantage that the cook and bartender get, is that they actually give people an extra energy bonus as they feed them. It isn't a huge difference, but anyone fed by an upgraded cook or bartender receive 15 extra energy. Re: [Audyssey] About the mag
Hi Ron, That sounds fair in terms of catching the community up on past news for the magazine, but I do have some concerns. For instance, I am pretty sure I sent you some kind of press releases for MOTA. I would hate to see you send out an announcement for say beta 17 when I'm about to release beta 21 on Monday. I'm away from home today, but I have plans to finish work on beta 21 this weekend so if there are any past announcements for MOTA I'd prefer to pull them from the mag. HI, The extra energy one gets from an upgraded cook or bartender. does that mean it takes that much longer for them to come back to the tavern? Or that they work just a bit harder and faster.? Thanks. - Original Message - From: Jeremy Kaldobsky jer...@kaldobsky.com Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2011 1:49 PM All of the jobs, except cook and bartender, get a 30 percent boost to their speed. Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, frustrated with the ship
Richard, what version are you using? I can't spot anywhere that talks about the ship needing bricks. Re: [Audyssey] Possible Bug in Castaways
If you had the game paused the whole time, then you didn't actually spend any supplies on the construction that you canceled. If supplies were already being carried to the construction site, the game will turn the people back around so that the lumber, bricks, metal, and cloth go back into your storehouse. Hi, If a building is destroyed before any supplies are left at the construction site, what happens then? Am I out those supplies? For instance, the game is paused. I put a mine at a particular spot, but then looking around I want it somewhere else. If I go back to that spot, press the delete key to remove the original construction site of the mine, am I out those supplies? What happens if there are supplies on it's way to a construction site when I destroy it? Mike, check the debuglog.txt file. If it mentions anything about Jaws failing to load, just download the game again. It isn't a huge change mind you, but the extra energy means they can stay away longer without having to eat again. It is actually 10 percent more energy, now that I took the time to check the code. Because of the increased speed, I've actually found that upgraded builders do a great job working on the guard towers that I must place far from my main city. Re: [Audyssey] castaways version 1.4b, with Jaws support!
Hi Phil. Nope, not from what I've seen at all. As I said, the curser is just for viewing the map and planting buildings. In castaways you have no direct control over what any of your people do at all. Lumberjacks will automatically find the nearest tree, your soldiers and knights go off and attack the goblins nearest your guard towers, builders start streight off when a building site has enough materials etc. This makes it a very different game to something like Sound rts where you must order people to go to specific places and do specific things. This is why castaways is actually more realistic and in the matter of it's resource and population management probably more complex as well. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] Castaways, frustrated with the ship
Indeed this is very strange. If you have a saved game file, please send it my way so I can take a look. Hi Jeremy, I am currently using version 1.3. I've grabbed 1.4, but haven't installed it yet. In the building guide text file, it says: Ship 50 Lumber, 18 Metal Bars, and 30 Cloth But yet, everytime I've gone and built the ship, it asks for 18 bricks also. Strange? Re: [Audyssey] castaways version 1.4b, with Jaws support!
Hi, THat is often problematic though. For instance, I was playing earlier today, and I had three injured people. Well, I had cloth, but with my peasants transporting oar, meat, and dead animals, and vegetables, I never got the cloth to the hospital. Then if you close everyhing but the hospital they start starving very quickly.
