Re: [Audyssey] Question about Deluserlex on Jim's site?

2011-08-22 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Alfredo,

Below are all of the sapi5 fixes that I know of. Of course you have already
tried the first fix the deluserlex file.

The first thing that I would try would be the DelUserLex.exe file that you can
find on my free windows sapi5 text to speech games page, as well as on the GW
Micro and Freedom Scientific sites. It is a strange file in that it doesn't
say or seem to do anything, but it did fix my sapi5 voices.

Here is another fix that I was told about.
Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech
Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should
correct the control panel entries for Sapi.

Another thing that you can do is to use the Windows XP restore feature to
restore your computer back to a date when the voices were working.

And then there is to use your Windows XP cd to repair the entire sapi5 text to
speech engine.

you can download (SpeechSDK51MSM.exe).
which contains all of the Microsoft Sapi voices available for Windows XP from

Re: [Audyssey] Question about graphics on cast aways

2011-08-22 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Yeah, that was pretty much how I felt about it too. Putting in the game's
current level of graphics took far longer than I expected and I spent the whole
time telling myself I'm wasting all this time and probably no one is going to
even see this. lol! The good news is that your sighted friend should be
fully able to play the game using sight alone. Being sighted myself, and
having had a few sighted friends play the game, I usually play the game with
all sounds turned off believe it or not.

Accessible and sighted games seem to be um, organized differently. I can't
really put my finger on the right word to describe it. The lack or presence of
artwork isn't the only thing that separates them, so your friend is probably
also trying to get used to those changes as well.

Oh, I think I came up with an example that might work to describe what I was
trying to say. If you took book written in Spanish, and translated each word
individually into English for a friend, even though they could understand the
words, the structure of the sentences would still be strange because Spanish
and English use a different system. In that same way, adding artwork to an
accessible game will still stand out as strange to a mainstream gamer. This
isn't a big problem or anything, just something worth sharing in case anyone's
interested. :)

Okay will let her know. Well, I
understand that considering it is supposed to be a game for
the blind. Although it would be cool at least for some of my
other fully sighted friends to be able to see people and
stuff, but like you said graphics is probably last on the
things to do list in cast aways.

Re: [Audyssey] Mota thoughts

2011-08-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Valiant,

As I've explained before the alt key really isn't a viable option
right now. By default the Windows API assigns the alt key to the
context menu, and I've been trying to figure out how to disable that
functionality for months. The end result is if I attempt to silence
speech using alt it will silence speech and open up the context menu
as well. Obviously, that would not be too good for the end users.

One of the solutions I've found is to use a different graphical user
interface, window manager, like replacing the Windows API code with
Microsoft's Direct3D which is used by mainstream developers. That
would work I suppose, but the fix here would take longer than freeing
up that key is worth right now.

Cheers!

How did you aim, and at what distance did you shoot A cardboard box would
not stop an arrow from my bow. The backstop I shot at was made up of
layers of cardboard sheets that were about 4 feet long by 14 inches wide,
stacked until they were 6 feet high, held together by bar clamps. The
target was pinned to the stack. There was a pad of conveyer belt-type
rubber behind the cardboard stack, and the arrows would stick into this
hard rubber. So, if I were to shoot at a cardboard box, it wouldn't stop
an arrow.

Re: [Audyssey] Mota Bug

2011-08-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

Well, I've personally seen the torch bug once or twice myself, but it
happens so infrequently that there is no way to track it down or find
out what causes it to do that. I'm beginning the best fix for that
problem is to do what the GMA Engine does and create a button to reset
the sounds or the soundcard when the game begins acting funky. There
is absolutely nothing in the code that would point to a problem with
this.

Although, I suspect the problem might be related to DirectSound and
not the game. As in sometimes DirectSound doesn't reset certain
buffers when it is suppose to. The reason I think that way is during
my cross-platform attempts using OpenAL, FMOD, etc this bug never once
appeared on non-Windows platforms. It only seems to happen with the
versions that use Microsoft's DirectSound API.

Hi Dark,

Right. To be honest I've not encountered too many stand alone Flash

Flash really shines as an internet technology.

That said, given the cost of Adobe's Flash development tools and IDEs
it is more cost effective to write Java applets and servelets using
the Sun Java JDK. Once upon a time Java was initially a very internet
centered technology, before it became more popular as a general all

Hi Thomas, I agree completely with Yohandy on this one. You are under
absolutely no obligation whatsoever so far as I'm concerned to provide or
even allow mods, sound packs, voice packs, etc. for your products if you do
not wish to. What

many don't seem to get particularly in this community it seems is that your
games are copyrighted works and that any modding, production of alternate
sound and/or voice packs or anything else can be done only at your
discretion and with your permission otherwise the user has technically
violated the copyright and may forfeit his license to use the product. I
realize that some devs don't adhere to this kind of standard in this small
community however I believe it is worth pointing out to people that this
standard is the norm in the mainstream gaming community and anything other
than that is strictly optional and at the discretion of the developer.

Sorry for the late response to this, I recently acquired a MacBook and have
been busy learning that and so haven't had time to keep up with this list.

Hi Bryan,

Perhaps, but its the principle of the thing. Nobody wants to just
except the game as it was intended to be designed. MOTA players are
under the impression USA Games is like Subway we do it your way
which isn't what we had in mind here. Although, I have plenty of web
space right now imagine if I released voice packs, sound packs, etc
for each and every single game I ever create. Its going to end up
costing me extra web space and download bandwidth to support what I
consider non-essential junk. I'd prefer people to just accept the
changes as they are and stop requesting sound packs for this, that,
and the other thing because people just can't be satisfied with the
product I'm creating as is. They don't think about how much extra
time, effort, web space, etc is required to support their own
individual idea of how the game should be. More over they forget I'm
in charge of deciding such things and I have personal reasons for
doing what I do to.

Cheers!

Oh man, whoever is playing as Subzero in the first Subzero vs Scorpion
match could teach me a thing or 5 about navigation. Very slick!

Mind sharing the code to increase the pitch of the sounds dude? Next
time I'm over at my buddy's place who has a PS3 I'd quite like to try
a chick fight hehe.

Question, can PS3 and Xbox owners of the game compete online? Very
seriously considering picking up a console again sometime soon, I'd be
inclined to head for an Xbox (prefer the controllers and small
differences in accessibility), but at the same time it would be great
to hang out with you chaps online for some simulated punishment.

Re: [Audyssey] Question about graphics on cast aways

2011-08-22 Thread brice mellen
Well, I think it's awsome that you did put graphics in the game, cause it
opens up a whole new avenue for people in that sense. Now blind and sighted
alike can both play cast aways and enjoy it all the same. And is their a
keystroke to turn the sound off?

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Question about graphics on cast aways

Yeah, that was pretty much how I felt about it too. Putting in the game's
current level of graphics took far longer than I expected and I spent the
whole time telling myself I'm wasting all this time and probably no one is
going to even see this. lol! The good news is that your sighted friend
should be fully able to play the game using sight alone. Being sighted
myself, and having had a few sighted friends play the game, I usually play
the game with all sounds turned off believe it or not.

Accessible and sighted games seem to be um, organized differently. I can't
really put my finger on the right word to describe it. The lack or presence
of artwork isn't the only thing that separates them, so your friend is
probably also trying to get used to those changes as well.

Oh, I think I came up with an example that might work to describe what I was
trying to say. If you took book written in Spanish, and translated each
word individually into English for a friend, even though they could
understand the words, the structure of the sentences would still be strange
because Spanish and English use a different system. In that same way,
adding artwork to an accessible game will still stand out as strange to a
mainstream gamer. This isn't a big problem or anything, just something
worth sharing in case anyone's interested. :)

Okay will let her know. Well, I
understand that considering it is supposed to be a game for
the blind. Although it would be cool at least for some of my
other fully sighted friends to be able to see people and
stuff, but like you said graphics is probably last on the
things to do list in cast aways.

Could I please remind you to send off topic messages to either Tom, Kevin or

As it happens I am able to help you. I will email you off list about this

Hi all,

I think most if all of you know that off topic posts are not aloud on
list with or without the words off topic, ot, etc in the subject line.
The list guidelines are also clear that if you feel that a message is
off topic and would like it approved by a moderator that you should
contact the list moderators or the list owner before posting said
message. As no such request was asked or given regarding the off topic
Text Pal topic I'm afraid I have no other choice to begin moderating
certain list members.

Please, do not respond, reply, or post any more messages on that
particular topic on list. Any and all replies to said topic will
result in your immediate moderation.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 22 thoughts

2011-08-22 Thread Thomas Ward
HI Tom,

That's very true. Most mainstream game developers encrypt their
sounds, graphics, and other game data precisely for that reason. They
don't want someone just modding the game however they want, and they
consider changing this or that a serious violation of copyright. Most
audio game developers haven't been that strict with the community, but
perhaps they should start because we've ended up with a rather lax
attitude towards copyrights and ownership etc.

Its for that reason I've already decided to begin encrypting the
sounds, music, and speech files for MOTA. I'm going to eliminate this
attitude I paid for it so I can mod it idea in a hurry. I created
the game the way I wanted it, and I'm not going to just allow people
to mod it however they want or think it should be because it isn't
their game. They aren't the creator or the developer of the product so
don't have the final say about things like that.

Cheers!

 Game on.

Thomas, this is one reason why I have often wondered why you have
released so many public betas. People should just be patient and wait
for the final release with maybe 1, or 2 public betas, but that should
be it. The idea of, I'm blind and I want things my way or else I'll
throw a fit is for children, not adults.

I am very sure you just wanna get this off your shoulders and move onto

know I will enjoy it regardless.

Thanks.

That's a very valid point. I think I've been far too liberal in the

this or that at the drop of a hat. What some gamers here forget is no
mainstream developer commercial, independant, or otherwise is going to
just change such and such because one or two gamers grumble about it.
What I've done in terms of beta 22 which I wanted to do clear back as
early as beta 20 is freeze the development of the game. That is to say
stop adding features, changes, whatever and actually focus on adding
new levels, cutscenes, and whatever has to be done to get this 1.0
ready. That is primarily what I'm doing right now, and I'm sticking to
that. I've closed out the suggestions and changes portion of the game
and am working on actual game play and updates for v1.0.

It's always compromises with you guys. can't a man create a game how he
wants, and everyone just play it how it was intended? when you play a ps3
game do you suddenly say hmm, I'm gonna swap this game's sounds for much
cooler ones. course not. you just play the thing how it was designed.
sheesh. this community exasperates me so much. there's rarely a discussion
thread that doesn't contain these words. well can't you do such and such?
swap sounds? make game easier? discard analog jumping? and on and on. no
wonder guys like Draconis don't post updates. I think it's for the best.
once their new games comes out people will play it, and it will be too late
to change anything. if I was a dev I'd do exactly the same thing.

Hi.
Very complex? I'm assuming you're talking about the desktop with it's
Audigy 2zs. All of the other computers I mentioned use internal sound
cards that did come with them. As for balance, I have them all set to 50
percent. And as for surround sound, I have the audigy 2zs set to stereo
headphones though I should check and be sure of that, my laptops all
don't have that option to begin with or if they do I don't know how to
disable it. I have this hp with it's i d t sound card set so that all
affects are disabled. My Toshiba has some enabled in order to have bass
boost and to be able to make it a little louder.

I do not suppose you could use the volume control, I mean, you use a

you have surround sound enabled by accident?

yeah, and if it's anything like the old mk, you have a limited time to put
it in, so you have to be kinda fast.

Yup, it was mixing and matching consoles that I was hoping for. Hmmm,
given that the vast majority of MK players I know own PS3's, looks
like I'll have to join that club.

Thanks for the code and input tips dude, neat system! I'm assuming you
put the code in at the character select screen?

Scott,
Code is 091. you input them by pressing appropriate button. square,
triangle
and circle respectively. if you hold up on the Dpad and a button you go
in
reverse. so hold up and press square you'll get 9. keep holding button
and
press again you get 8 etc. they all default to 0. there are all sorts of
neat codes like unlimited super meter lol. as to your question, we can
play
online on both consoles, but if you have an xbox and I have a ps3, we
can't
fight each other. console's online modes are exclusive.

Very
seriously considering picking up a console again sometime soon, I'd be
inclined to head for an Xbox (prefer the controllers and small
differences in accessibility), but at the same time it would be great
to hang out with you chaps online for some simulated punishment.

and I, as well as some other friends of ours have started doing MK
tournaments. first one was completed yesterday, and unfortunately we
lost by a few points, but this shall only make us practice harder
and longer. because the winners of these tournaments wins free PSN
cards! If anyone would like to join these tournaments, or wish me to
record them and upload them on here let me know. I tell ya, when
theirs cash or prizes on the line, the pressure is tremendous.
especially since we're doing these as teams and the loss from a
teammate really hurts hahaha. really wish I had recorded it. it was
s good! well too late now. enjoy these matches though!
