Re: [Audyssey] Sony PSP Ipad

2012-05-02 Thread shaun everiss

Hi.
I would also suggest soundrts, quentin c playroom and all the rs
games client and other games.

I'd also suggest all the usagamesinteractive games.
and maybe aprones games though maybe killing zombies may have to come later.
All the gma games should be quite good to later on though he is only
8 so be the judge of that.

then there is sthe blastbay and l-works games.
None of our games are particularly violent most are strat based.
I know there are junk loads of iphone stuff like papa sangre, night
jar and stem stumper, but I don't know them all as I don't play with
any apple devices at all.

wie sports can be played.
I have seen the bozz games being played on a ps2 ps3 psp and xbox 360
as well as the sing star and some other rock band games.

I have played some of them or heard some of these being played.
Over that, I am not sure.
I suggest if you can your child should run some of the stuff from the
iff archive, there are loads of things.
I don't know all of them now as I hardly play them and when I do its
only tads and hugo now.

That and inform are 3 major languages we have played.
Over that there is probably not much I can suggest.
Saying that if you end up finding something that works post it as we
are always looking.

So experiment and if you find something then post it.
I think yohandy and a few others should advise you as there are at
least 6 console freaks here on list that seem to be at sighted level
that I can't even get.

oh if you play entombed to that may be good there are probably others.
I suggest you post something in the general ariea of the
forum.audiogames.net site

There are loads more players online and a lot are not on here.

Jeremy, that still is a problem.
My char had 23 rep prier to update
I updated, now I killed loads of zombies and got 71 rep.
I entered into the safe zone.
I tried to buy something and it said I hadn't enough rep I thought
ok, its just that the client said I had to much.
but no, i had 23 again so unless the client and server are way over
whack I don't think its saving automatically unless I have to hit esc
twice in safe zone to save rep which would suck.

In regards to the rep bug, I should jump in to give a bit of

zombies. The server holds the correct amount and when you interact
with the safe zone or travel, the mistake is caught and your client
is given the correct amount. While this doesn't make it less
irritating, at least you know that you aren't being jipped out of
reputation points that you've earned.

There are, however, wiki systems you can host on your site as well as

 Hey Aprone,

I'm running Swamp virtualised on a Macbook Air here. For the
 most
part, things are hunky dory (London speak for rather good),
 but I have
had to do a lot of tinkering with the key config. This is
 partly due
to Apple's slightly insane approach where they have a huge
 trackpad,
the entirety of which serves as one giant mouse button when
 you press
on it, and mostly due to their keyboard layout being a bit
 different.

There are a few keys which the key config system doesn't
 seem to
recognise at all, such as backspace (also tried that written
 all in
uppercase). I don't know how your system works, but is there
 a way I
could perhaps send you the ascii values for the problematic
 keys and
 get those added?

 Cheers

[Audyssey] Something wrong with the swamp speaker test

Hi there.
There is something wrong with the sound test.
When it alternates between the left and right speakers, the sound is

For example,: you hear it say left speaker, and then the sound comes

Can this be fixed?

 Hi all,
I just bought a macbook pro. I wanna know if there are any accessible
games out there that work on mac and are good with voice over. I don't
care if they are free or paid, but I don't know where to go to find
this type of info. I want good stuff too. /grins/ Also, do any of the
main stream games work with voice over, you know mac games created for
sighted users that happen to be pretty accessible?
 Thanks,

That's all there was to it.

The message Shaun posted in this thread sounds like very similar behaviour

Re: [Audyssey] swamp 2.2 thoughts

2012-05-02 Thread Dakotah Rickard
The trouble when comparing Swamp with other multi-player shoot-'em-ups
is that Swamp is a continuous Swamp has an on-going world structure.
Other shooters' multi-players are rather like Swamp's missions. Those
can't be paused, but there isn't a main map where people can run
around and collect stuff. Most games simply have you spending money
you get from missions for better stuff on other missions, if you have
to spend anything at all. Swamp isn''t that type of game. You
literally can't make enough from missions to keep yourself supplied
for missions. That is why I do not think it would be completely
unreasonable to have some sort of pause feature, or even a temporary
disconnect that costs some reputation but keeps your character intact.

I have three kids, one on the way, and I'm telling you right now that
having a pause feature would be awesome, at least in the main map.

Please keep in mind the differences between Swamp and most other
similar mainstream games, because they are neat ones fun ones, but
they also may allow for a different level of consideration.

The ps3 and xbox 350s also have this function, especially for games that
have online which is more or less 95% of games today. As to games
themesleves, it's already been pointed out that most games on the psp are
fighting games. But if your kid already plays GTA... well, that game is
about as disgusting as it gets, and most fighting games will not be a

all in what your kid wants to play. If you have more questions feel free to

Re: [Audyssey] Sony PSP Ipad

2012-05-02 Thread Dakotah Rickard
The thing about the Nintendo Wii is that it offers several titles
which can be enjoyed, not only Wii Sports and the sequal Wii Sports
Resort (which offers many more interesting games), but most of the
party games as well.

Also, with that console, even if your child is not playing the game at
the same level as a sighted friend, they are still able to enjoy them.

There are certainly several mainstream games which can be played,
given time and patience. And if you are going to help him, the list
increases. I sometimes just sist back and direct my wife to play
through a game with me which would otherwise be inaccessible, and that
experience works fine.

It would be very helpful to me, from a recommendation standpoint, to
know what sort of games, books, or pretend play your child enjoys.
Shaun recommended in his first message an enormous list of games and
developers. Certainly every developer and game is worth playing about
with, and those developers are for strictly accessible games, but it
would shorten the list to know what your child enjoys.

I suggest, though, that you do start out with these games, as they are
designed for blind persons to enjoy. I think that even the die-hard
console gamers will agree with me that there is a certain level of
frustration in learning a console that is not present in learning most
audio games.

I would also like to offer a cautionery word. Learning how to use
mainstream devices is both easier and more rewarding than it was.
Apple does a fantastic job of making their IPad, IPod, and IPhone
accessible to the blind.d Other companies lag behind, but many are
moving slowly in that direction. However, there are still many
devices, gaming consoles among them, which are not designed for blind
individuals to use. We use them, because we try very hard and are
prepared for huge setbacks. Still, I urge you to be very careful in
providing your child with only these devices and not investigating the
audio games which are currently available. I do not mean that you are
failing your child in any respect, and I see that you have said your
son plays games on a notetaker, so it is clear that you are aware and
willing to obtain these devices. I only urge caution and careful
consideration when purchasing a new device which is not blind
friendly, because it can either be tremendously rewarding and last in
his mind as a treasured memory, or it can be frustrating and end up
collecting dust in a closet.

still, I also urge you to experiment and have fun. That is probably
the best path to discovery.

 Hi there.
There is something wrong with the sound test.
When it alternates between the left and right speakers, the
sound is heard in both speakers at once.
For example,: you hear it say left speaker, and then the
sound comes out of both speakers instead of only the left
 speaker.
 Can this be fixed?

Re: [Audyssey] Something wrong with the swamp speaker test

2012-05-02 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
The speaker test isn't actually the game panning sounds. It is just a
recording where sounds pan within the actual file. I could be wrong, so don't
quote me on this, but I think the sound test file was made and sent in by a
Swamp fan. I can't remember who it was though, so if the original author reads
this perhaps they'll want to adjust the panning to more extremes.

Well, what's happening is unlike most
speaker tests this one actually doesn't start and end on the
extreme ends of the channels, so it starts somewhere in the
slight left and ends in the near right, rather than doing it
 the conventional way.

Re: [Audyssey] Sony PSP Ipad

2012-05-02 Thread Clement Chou
Dakotah made some good points. I don't know much about the wii so I can't
comment much on it. But as I said, if your son already plays GTA that may
make things somewhat easier. I started my gaming career through consoles
before I even knew audio games existed, so I think it's entirely dependent
on what the person is looking for. Audio games are a good place to start,
but I think it's often more frustrating to play them first, as you then
expect console games to be as simple and get more frustrated when you
actually have to learn them. Though I will agree that sitting down with
someone and playing through an action adventure together is pretty good too.
And Dakotah also said that apple devices are more accessible... this is also
definitely true, and I think games there would be somewhat easier to get
into, since they're more integrated and learning the ipod or iphone would be
simple. But all in all, I'd say the psp has a good list of games, all be it
a small one... but if your son is willing to put in the energy to learn it
and if you can help him along, it's definitely something to enjoy. Here's a
short list of games that I think are accessible in series format, and as
most people have said, pretty much all of these games are fighting games.

Tekken series, with two games
Street Fighter, which has one game on the psp and a few as part of capcom
arcade collections

Mortal Kombat unchained
Fight night and other boxing type games
WWE smack down vs. raw
I haven't played all of these, and there are also more games than what is
listed here. That's just a start.

[Audyssey] Tweaks to Swamp chatlog and tracking in missions?

Hey Jeremy,

Sorry, I know I'm bombarding you somewhat since starting playing, but
when you have time, could you give these tweaks the once-over to see
what you make of them?

During missions, it would be great if the O and P keys only cycled
through other players who're on that mission with you.

At the moment, it's possible to scroll off the end of the chatlog and
game messages buffers into dead space... oops!

Could a shortcut be added to jump to the beginning and end of both
buffers? Something like CTRL+, to jump to the most recent chat

get the idea Im sure. Would be mega handy when you're catching up on

2012-05-02 Thread john
We do, I guess, have that disconnect. Seeing as you can't
currently loose link in swamp, if your willing to loose
everything you've gained since your last save, either closing the
game via task manager or killing your internet connection will
save your char. Of course, this isn't always so easy to do as
pausing the game, (particularly if you use task manager) and it
can hurt quite a bit; but I'm more than willing to loose a couple
fuel and 1000 ammo instead of everything. Unfortunately, if you
don't remember or don't have the time to pull this off then your
quite stuck, and dead to boot.

The trouble when comparing Swamp with other multi-player
shoot-'em-ups
is that Swamp is a continuous Swamp has an on-going world
structure.
Other shooters' multi-players are rather like Swamp's missions.
Those

can't be paused, but there isn't a main map where people can run
around and collect stuff. Most games simply have you spending
money
you get from missions for better stuff on other missions, if you
have

to spend anything at all. Swamp isn''t that type of game. You
literally can't make enough from missions to keep yourself
supplied

for missions. That is why I do not think it would be completely
unreasonable to have some sort of pause feature, or even a
temporary
disconnect that costs some reputation but keeps your character
intact.

I have three kids, one on the way, and I'm telling you right now
that
having a pause feature would be awesome, at least in the main
map.

Please keep in mind the differences between Swamp and most other
similar mainstream games, because they are neat ones fun ones,
but

they also may allow for a different level of consideration.

2012-05-02 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
I'll give this some thought and see what I come up with.

On a side note you are definitely correct that games are primarily for fun.
The other thing to consider is that any time a game is multiplayer you are
accepting responsibilities that wouldn't exist in a single player game. This
even translates into real life. If playing a game of chess against yourself
for practice, you might just walk away and come back an hour later. When
playing with another person you have a responsibility to them which keeps you
from doing that same thing. While the responsibilities are different depending
on the game, I do believe every game becomes driven by more than simply fun
once other people are involved. This wasn't meant to dismiss your ideas
Johnny, I still plan to give this some thought to see if I can come up with a
solution that fits with my design but also makes people happy.

Speaking purely from a gamer point of
view, I think that the point of a game is, well, for fun,

should be reasonable to be able to pause that fun while

[Audyssey] Need Help with Dimensions

2012-05-02 Thread Kelly Sapergia

Hi,

I just bought the Dimensions game. I think it's going to be a good one,
except that I'm now worried that I may have inadvertently bought something
from the Quantum Cells store without wanting to. I was trying to find the
beam button at one point, and ended up in the store. After not hearing the
beam while dragging my finger around where I should be, I restarted
Voiceover, which said that something was selected. Is there a way I can tell
if I purchased something? I sure hope I didn't, as I don't know how to
cancel the order or get my money back. As well, I somehow ended up in the
Transform lab, then a Quantum Cells guage, and now I can't get out. What do
I do? I'm now beginning to wonder if getting this game was a good idea.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] swamp 2.2 thoughts

2012-05-02 Thread Dennis Towne
Everyone,

I don't know how applicable this would be to Swamp, but since Alter
Aeon is also a persistent server, we've run into a lot of problems
like this over the years. Since the internet sucked a lot more in the
olden days, so we put in protection for link death:

If a player loses link and is attacked to the point that they would
die, the server transfers them back to the safe zone and kicks them
from the server. There's a timer on this, so that if players drop
link to escape death, the server will let them die instead of saving
them.

Some sort of 'work' mode that allows for this might help players, so
that if a player hasn't been active for a few minutes the server will
try to save and boot them when they're attacked. To prevent people
from abusing 'work' mode, it might be necessary to have fewer or no
rewards or gains when you play with it on.

It's tough to handle 'real life' situations when they come up in a
virtual world. As a game designer you want to preserve the integrity
of the virtual world, but when real life gets in the way, all you can
do is try to make things a little easier on your players.

Swamp sounds like a really awesome game. It's neat hearing about all
the stuff going on with it.

The speaker test isn't actually the game panning sounds. It is just a
recording where sounds pan within the actual file. I could be wrong, so
don't quote me on this, but I think the sound test file was made and sent in
by a Swamp fan. I can't remember who it was though, so if the original
author reads this perhaps they'll want to adjust the panning to more
extremes.

Well, what's happening is unlike most
speaker tests this one actually doesn't start and end on the
extreme ends of the channels, so it starts somewhere in the
slight left and ends in the near right, rather than doing it
 the conventional way.

Thanks.

Speaking purely from a gamer point of view, I think that the
point of a game
is, well, for fun, and thus, when real life suddenly demands your
attention,
it should be reasonable to be able to pause that fun while you
run like
mad to the washroom...just for example...without, as someone
pointed out,
losing a week, or even month, worth of careful playing and saving
up items.
Otherwise, without such option, many of us probably wouldn't play
swamp at
all unless we know we are sure to have a few hours of
uninterupted play-time

at least, which in my case/life style, is pretty much impossible.
Granted you can go to the safe zone and idle there, but if I'm on
the other
side of town, I don't have the time to run to safe zone without
missing say,

that important phone call from a client.
If pause is too abuseable, then at least give an instant recall
to safe zone
option, say make it cost 200 rep or something, so when something
urgent

comes up, we at least have that way out fast.

Ben Said:

I might argue that Aprone works nights and that it's inconsiderate of you to
be so rude simply because he won't jump on the bandwagon and implement a
feature specifically for you right away. I honestly found this a fairly rude
comment, and were I in the position to do so, I'd be even more compelled to
just leave things be on simple merrit of subpar decorum.

John and Johnny:
You can now hit escape and exit the game from almost anywhere, without the
necessity to forcibly disconnect / terminate the client. Yes, this means you
lose whatever you gained since you last logged on, but if you are just on
for the fun of shooting zombies anyway, that shouldn't matter too much.
There's so many ways I could think of a pausing system (in fact, they were
being abused before when you could pause swamp), that I doubt the extra
effort to contend with such tactics codewise would be worth it. I'd much
rather Jeremy do some bug fixing and new feature implementation than to add
things which themselves might cause him to have to lock himself in a rat
race with people intent on cheating the system.

Re: [Audyssey] Something wrong with the swamp speaker test

2012-05-02 Thread Kai
I mixed the file myself, and I don't actually see a problem with it. No, the
voice isn't at an extreme left or right, but if you're checking your
speakers for proper positioning, and you can't tell that left is on left and
right is on right, maybe you're not placing the headphones/speakers
properly?

2012-05-02 Thread Scott Chesworth
TBH, the maximum pan people usually go for in these tests is deceiving
anyway if you're using that sound to position your speakers for
accurate aiming. I mean, unless Jeremy has coded diferently, it would
be logical to assume that the extreme left of the stereo field would
equate to something nasty being at exactly 90 degrees to your left,
exactly aligned with you. How often does that happen!

Just a thought...

Swamp doesn't actually care what gender you are, so for all intents and
purposes, we're all sexless. It's also not a big enough issue in my opinion
to convince me to mix new female death sounds, or for Aprone to put in
custom exceptions to check if a player is using a female voice.

Re: [Audyssey] Need Help with Dimensions

2012-05-02 Thread Kelly Sapergia

Hi,

I've only played Dimensions for awhile, but it's pretty good. It does take
some getting used to, especially when it comes to finding where things like
your beam are on the screen, but it shouldn't take long to figure out. I
figured out how to get an artifact, but I can't defeat the nefalem (or
however you spell that). During the training portion, whenever I tried to
get rid of one, the game voice kept interrupting itself, so I never got the
instructions right. I wish there was a way I could go back to that portion
of the game.

By the way, regarding my supposed in-app purchase, I believe that was just a
false alarm. Still, it's good to be careful, especially since the prices
they offer for more quantum cells can be rather high, such as the Ultimate
Pack for $79.95! Ouch!

Hope this helps.

Yours Sincerely,

Years ago, in the land of commercial Interactive fiction, there was an
Amstrad space adventure called Moonbase by Mark Eakton.
The game was available until 1988 or some time around there, when
amstrad was bought by either Son microsystems or Microsoft.
Now a new generation of adventurers can play this old game.
The game includes tts capabilities (probably using talkback) and voice
input capabilities, meaning that no matter what(unless your paralized,
deaf and mute) you can play this game with ease.

Re: [Audyssey] swamp 2.2 thoughts

2012-05-02 Thread Dakotah Rickard
I agree that the contention with school thing is stupid. I go to
college, have three kids and a wife, and am consitantly able to find a
few minutes here and there to play Swamp.

I suggest that it be very expensive but that some sort of transit to
the closest safe zone be possible. Say a thousand rep. That way if you
can risk it or if it's cheaper to just disconnect, you can do that,
but if you just found literally every weapon and a pile of ammo, it's
worth it. Maybe a thousand is huge, so five hundred, but I think it
should really hurt to have instant safety.

I also think that cheaters ruin their own fun. i don't mean that
Jeremy shouldn't care about the problem, just that a cheater gets
bored and moves on. As long as the server isn't being attacked,
cheaters are just making the game boring for themselves. Why should
they continue if therre's no challenge. Reason I'm saying this is
because I think that implementing too many anti-cheating features,
since there isn't really a way for one player to impact another
directly yet, is a sweaty mess that seems to be more stress than its
worth.

Anything that Jeremy does is probably going to kick butt, and the
pause thing isn't worth a major wrinkle. I do have to say though that
Swamp is quite a unique game, all things considered, and that
uniqueness comes with a slight price. We players can't have the same
expectations as we would with other games, and Jeremy can't quite look
at it as just another FPS. It just doesn't fit.

I hope this finds you all well.

Dakotah Rickard

2012-05-02 Thread Steady Goh
Hi Jeremy, not sure if you will consider making the server periodically auto
save player stats and not just do that in save zone. Maybe like every 2
minutes or so. I know this takes out a feature in sz, but it fixes quite a
number of problems. We won't worry about not able to pause the game to
attend to something that requires immediat attention and not saving our
work. We just have to quit game. But you will have to put the not able to
escape when zombies chasing code back in so we can't quit every time when
there is danger. Players will not lose most of the items they collect if
they have connection dropout. At most only the last 2 minutes work. It also
takes out a possible game cheat or at least makes it less effective. If
someone goes out on a run, used up lots of ammo and didn't collect much and
in the event break some weapons or armer now, he can quit outside sz,
relogin and have everything back to the time he left sz.

I'll give this some thought and see what I come up with.

On a side note you are definitely correct that games are primarily for
fun. The other thing to consider is that any time a game is multiplayer
you are accepting responsibilities that wouldn't exist in a single player
game. This even translates into real life. If playing a game of chess
against yourself for practice, you might just walk away and come back an
hour later. When playing with another person you have a responsibility to
them which keeps you from doing that same thing. While the
responsibilities are different depending on the game, I do believe every
game becomes driven by more than simply fun once other people are
involved. This wasn't meant to dismiss your ideas Johnny, I still plan to
give this some thought to see if I can come up with a solution that fits
with my design but also makes people happy.

Speaking purely from a gamer point of
view, I think that the point of a game is, well, for fun,
and thus, when real life suddenly demands your attention, it
should be reasonable to be able to pause that fun while
you run like mad to the washroom...just for
example...without, as someone pointed out, losing a week, or
even month, worth of careful playing and saving up items.
Otherwise, without such option, many of us probably wouldn't
play swamp at all unless we know we are sure to have a few
hours of uninterupted play-time at least, which in my
case/life style, is pretty much impossible.
Granted you can go to the safe zone and idle there, but if
I'm on the other side of town, I don't have the time to run
to safe zone without missing say, that important phone call
from a client.
If pause is too abuseable, then at least give an instant
recall to safe zone option, say make it cost 200 rep or
something, so when something urgent comes up, we at least
have that way out fast.

[Audyssey] Games simular to Inspector Cindy games.

2012-05-02 Thread michael barnes
Hello, I just purchase the Inspector Cindy games, and I have to say I
am enjoying them!
As I was playing them I notice that those games remind me of the board
game call Clue.

It has alot of the same things as the game of Clue.
But what I was wondering if anyone knows if there are anymore games
simular to the Inspector Cindy games?

Thanks!
