 Hi Tom and Dark,

THanks for the feedback. As I tried to make clear in the original response,
playable demos are something that are being continually discussed and thought
about here. It's not an area where we are dead set on any specific course of
 action.

To clarify: When asking a user to invest $30-$40 in a title, we feel very
strongly that it was essential to offer a playable demo.

In lowering the price, we have to balance the added overhead of managing
demos and accepting potentially higher levels of piracy from users finding
 ways to exploit the demos.

Using some random numbers just to illustrate an example…

If five people do not purchase the game because there is not a playable demo
and no one of their acquaintance has a copy on their machine that they can
play for a few minutes, we've lost five sales at most.

If we offer a demo, and an exploit means that 50 people pirate the title, we
have potentially lost a maximum of 50 sales, plus the time spent implementing
 the unlockable demo, etc.

And, just to throw out some real world numbers…just in what we've been able
to track, we know that MonkeyBusiness has been pirated by around 300 users at
minimum, and potentially many more. In an industry as small as ours, that is
 not insignificant.

We are not saying we will definitively not do demos…but it is something that
we need to weigh the pros and cons for very carefully, and make sure that it
 is worth it overall.

Sometimes, doing the best thing for the customer is costly. Our registration
keys, for example, are not tied to hardware the way, for instance, GMA's are.
We do this because we understand the frustration for users upgrading to a new
system, or who have multiple machines they want to be able to play the game
on. As a result, we've had to accept a very, very high rate of piracy of our
games. In bringing the cost down, it is harder justifying all of these kinds
of things, and we need to weigh each very carefully.

 Hope this helps clarify.

 Hi all,

I find myself in agreement with Dark on this issue of demos. While I
realize Draconis is attempting to bring the cost down on new and
existing games I'd still prefer to try before I buy a game. Even if a
game is only $10 I don't really have it to spend frivolously. As I am
married, have a family to worry about, etc I tend to watch every
dollar and only pay for things that I am absolutely sure I want.
Sometimes an audio trailer and a brief description isn't enough to get
 me to purchase a product.

I'll offer an example here. I do not consider myself much of a Harry
Potter fan. Oh, I've watched the movies, read the books, and for me it
is something I can pretty much take or leave. So I'm not actively
looking for games etc with Harry Potter themes. So something like
Sarah would not attract my attention because of the Harry Potter type
 theme alone.

Moreover I heard audio trailers, read descriptions of the game in
early development, and for the most part I blew them off. However,
when I got to play the demo of Sarah I became hooked on the game
itself, and wanted to see more of the castle, see how far I could get,
and it was the demo that convinced me to cough up the money for the
game more than any other factor. So you see even if Sarah had been
$10, which would be more than reasonable for that game, I wouldn't
have paid because I didn't think I would like it until I actually
 played the demo.

There have been other cases where my decision to buy or not to buy
have been based more or less on the quality of the demo. If a demo
isn't available I'm going to be less likely to pay for the game unless
I have money to burn and have no prior commitments which is usually
 never. :D

 Cheers!

As regards demos, I'm afraid I'm a little confused as to your reasoning that

bringing the price down automatically means you don't need a demo. This
might be true for games such as silver dollar where the over all price is
extremely low and the game is more than simple enough to understand from an

audio clip, but for something more complex that might not be the case,
indeed there have been several occasions in the past that I only recognized

the worth of games myself by playing them.

I did not for example think much to the initial idea of audio pinball from
the audio clips or promotional material. i was not convinced how much fun
the game would be, since from what I heard it didn't seem you had much

[Audyssey] Brave of Cloudia translation difficulties

2013-01-22 Thread Sarah Haake

Hi,

ok, I downloaded Brave of Cloudia and I'm using NVDA with the translation
plugin. When I now start the game and try to get the translated text from
the clipboard it only reads the jumbled letters and ssymbols which you get
when reading japanese text in windows. I tried to install the japanese
keyboard from the windows control panel, but it wants the windows CD which I
can't find right now. The strange thing is, the translation plugin just
works with Bokurano Daibuken 2, without Japanese settings in windows or
anything, but it won't work with brave of cloudia. What can I do now to get
the translated text from the plugin?

All of Morokuma's games output text to the clipboard. That's the developer
that is making brave of cloudia. Shadow Line by MM does as long as you
select the correct option at startup. Those are all very good games,

clipboard and I actually like it better than bk2. There's also Bloody School
and ArkWar, but I can't remember the developer's name at the moment. All of
these games can be found under the links sections of the various japanese

Hi.

Well I paid for the weapons upgrade because I wanted to support the
developer and that seemed the best way but I am hoping more weapons and
indeed game center compatibility come soon.

I'm darktenor on games center if you want to add me.

I've not tried zombies run yet, since from the writeup on phil's site and
some comments I've heard I'm not that sure about how a couple of things
work, like the stratogy elements of the game, and also whether you can
access the hole game by just running on a treadmill as I do myself, since
obviously trying to run around the streets would be a little dangerous,
as

would trying to listen while walking anywhere outside though I do do some
running each day on a small trampoline in my flat which should be okay.

Beware the grue!

Hi Ron,

Yes, most of your old games will run on Windows 8. As with Windows 7
as long as you install VB 6 etc most of your older games can be made
to work with Win 8. The only games I can't get to run on Windows 8 are
old 16-bit Dos games which makes sense given that 16-bit compatibility
was dropped.

The message about how it is recommended that VoiceOver be disabled while

I know its probably going slightly off topic and I know its been talked

was a total joke I couldn't even hear a single letter I couldn't even tell

that's googles outlook on accessibility then they have a seriously seriously

It may be that Google catches up with apple in terms of accessibility for
their mainline apps, and I'm glad that you are having good luck with apps
you've installed from the Goog Store, but the sad and simple fact is that
there are lots of accessibility holes in the basic architecture of the
Android framework that will need to be fixed before it is accessible in the
same way that the IOS framework is accessible.

Let me put it to you this way. There are a lot of apps, both on Android OS
and IOS that are inaccessible, but there are more apps on IOS that are
accessible just because the Apple framework is accessible. What I mean is
that the app maker didn't have to sit there and try to make their product
Voiceover compliant. That's why, if you go on AppleVis, you'll find a lot of
apps that are labeled as workable if you can tolerate a bit of confusion or
put in a bit of work.

In the Android framework, as I understand it, accessible is something which
must be created in the apps. The apps aren't, by nature, accessible until
someone does something to make them less so. True, in both systems, a
developer can very easily cut corners which make apps inaccessible, but the
Apple framework tends toward making apps at least partially accessible, just
because of its nature and setup.

I want to put this forward as a thought about Google. The Apple maps app is
more than accessible, even if it's a bit confusing from time to time, but it
works. I can read maps on my phone, which, let me tell you, is a huge deal
for me. The google maps app, basically it isn't worth putting on, because it
sucks in terms of accessibility. The Dropbox app is accessible. Google drive
isn't. Safari is accessible, and though I haven't tried Google Chrome
because I'm more than pleased with Safari, I've heard that it doesn't do as
good a job in terms of accessibility. The GMail app is reasonable, but it's
a bit confusing from time to time, whereas the built-in mail app does the
same job and is much more manageable.

Basically, if Google doesn't take the time and put in the effort to make
apps accessible on devices which actively promote good accessibility, I
don't have a great deal of faith that they're going to clean up the mess
they've made of the accessibility in their own devices. Google just doesn't
place accessibility at as high of a priority as does Apple, so even if the
phone is eventually accessible, even if the Nexus does gain accessibility
features after a couple of years, by that point, you're probably already
going to at least be considering whether or not you want a new phone, while
those who bought an IOS device are seeing new and improved accessibility
features with each major update.

Frankly, I make myself wonder from time to time. I used to highly dislike
Apple, and there are still plenty of things about their strategies that I am
less fond of. I think that their marketing plan is based on hyping little
details and concealing larger ones to wow the launch crowd, which I dislike.
I think that they charge too much for device repairs and warranties. I think
that they might, eventually, get snowed under by the simply massive amount
of Android devices. But I love, and I'll say it again, love the fact that
having an iPhone has given me independence. I can buy a GPS app that does me
a little better in terms of accessibility and features that are specific to
the needs of a visually impaired person, but frankly I don't see much of a
need, because what's already there is pretty darn good. Android is a risk
that might pay off really nicely, but IOS is an investment in a steady
product that is going to appreciate over time with that self same
steadiness.

[Audyssey] advanced tips for Erncon?

2013-01-22 Thread Ken's Mail
I posted about this before, but I don't think it got through. Sorry if it did
and you're having to read basically the same question.
I thought to myself the other day, if i spend a few bucks, I can unlock the
elite fighter and start really kicking enemy butt.
Boy was i disappointed. My score only went up about 20 points. the outcomes of
the battles were a bit different--I went from shooting shooting shooting
blowing up fighters then finding the next, to shooting, blowing up fighters,
then flying aimlessly trying to seek out that next fighter. My high score
before the elite fighter was 54. My highest with it is 74. My seven-year-old
son got 182 on his third try!
So, any tips for finding the ships and gems faster? How big is the playing
field? Are there any obstacles, and if so, are there any sounds made when we
hit them, or does it just wrap around like I would expect? I find that if I
treat the game as a side scroller I do a bit better, but it's still not great.
Help appreciated. This game's the best!

Re: [Audyssey] The Dragon Answers Questions

2013-01-22 Thread Michael Gauler

Hi Thomas,
I am in Germany, and so is my mother.
She bought a laptop a while ago with Windows 7 Home Premium.
And I can tell you the following (she is sighted, while I am blind, thus she
did checking):

1.
Her Windows includes a subversion of .net 3.5 which seems to be called .net
3.51 (by default (pre SP1, which is not included in the installation DVD).

2.
There are two offline installers for .net 4.0, the full package and the
Client Profile.
I can run the full package on my desktop computer, which currently runs
Windows XP.
The same installation file for .net 4.0 I use, had to be used on her laptop
to install .net 4.0.
After this was done, she could use Windows Update to get patches for .net
4.0

3.
Microsoft announced and released a version called .net Framework 4.5 which
can be installed on Vista and Windows 7 (if I am not mistaken), but I am not
sure if this is included in Windows 8 or not (not Windows RT). It seems to
be more an update than a separate version with its own folders, but I might
be wrong here.
I am not sure if this version of Windows was altered by the hardware
manufacturer, but theese are the facts, at least for this one Windows 7
system...

Subject: [Audyssey] Much easier Japanese Game Translation

Hello,

This is for those of you that have wanted to try out the japanese games, but
don't want to go through the hastle of pasting everything into google
translate. It's also a lot easier to set up.

Note that you will still need to install the japanese keyboard and IME for
this to work properly.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2658966/Instant-Translate-2.1.nvda-addon

Download this Addon and run it to install it into NVDA. If it tries to
download as a zip folder for whatever reason, set your filetype to all
files, and add the .NVDA-addon extension to the end of the filename. Credit
goes to Sadavoi Alexi for this awesome Plugin.

Now once you have your computer set up to display japanese correctly,
including changing the system locale, all you need to do is go to instant
translate settings in NVDA Preferences and set your input language to
japanese. Do not use auto detect, as sometimes it tries to translate as
chinese, which really does not work very well. Then you just select your
japanese game of choice that has the auto-copy to clipboard function and
you'll be able to play fine. NVDA shift T translates selected text, NVDA
shift Y translates text from the clipboard.

I don't think there could be a simpler way to play these games. I hope this
introduces some new people to the awesomeness that is the japanese
audiogames, and I hope you all enjoy. If anyone needs help with anything,
either plug-in or game related, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Re: [Audyssey] a little article

2013-01-22 Thread shaun everiss

Yeah me to, it was a good writeup.
A lot of the articles I have read are about the poor helpless blind
or something like that.

So I eventually just didn't read any more.
worse is stuff officially recognised the blind can play via the
blindness organisations though if you ask unofficially there is more
acnowledgement but not officially.

I mean asabat and card games maybe board games only.
Sure those exist but still.

[Audyssey] Brave of Cloudia questions

2013-01-22 Thread Sarah Haake

Hi,

so, I finally got this game to work under Windows 7, yay. *smiles*

But I'm stuck already.

First question is, how can I save my game? I just spent hours trying to
complete the tutorial and finally gave up. There was no way to exit the
current level though, I had to close the game with alt+F4 and nothing was
saved, which means I have to start over again, grrr. So, how can I save and
is there actually a way to exit a level if I have to stop playing? I already
realized that some levels can take quite some time and therefore it's
possible that I have to stop in the middle of it.

My second question is about the tutorial. How on earth can I complete the
last level of it? It's the one where the different terrains are explained,
and I can't find the exit. I have the strong suspition that I run in
circles. Lol. So, any help would be appreciated, I don't even know where to
look for the exit or how to navigate this thing somewhat systematically.

So, thanks for any help and best regards
Sarah

Hi Michael,

Not sure what I can say other than your mother's computer is
definitely not the norm. Not as far as my experience with Windows 7
goes.. Every copy of Windows 7 I have purchased comes with .NET 4.0
preinstalled, but I might add it doesn't show up under Programs and
Features as it is a system component. that said, there are additional
.NET updates that can be installed along side .NET 4.0 such as 3.5.1
which installs backwards compatibility libs for .NET 2.0, 3.0, and
3.5. The .NET 4.5 you speak of is simply an updated patch for .NET
4.0. As previously mentioned Windows 8 comes with .NET 5.0 by default.
That's about all I can say on the issue at this point.

I am not sure if this version of Windows was altered by the hardware
manufacturer, but theese are the facts, at least for this one Windows 7
 system...

Tom I got a win7 cd iso for my brothers uni in 2010 late 2010 and it
was 3.51 with the dotnet 4 profile.
I upgraded to 4.0 extended client with the installer then upgraded to
4.5 though 4.5 is mainly for the new bits and bobs for vc 2012.
ms was quite quiet in doing that though it was only because a few of
the units were on the blink I fiddled round with updating and found 4.5 stuff.

Has anyone had any luck with this?
