Hi Dark,

I have to offer a note of caution that a Mac as a machine primarily
for browsing probably isn't a wise move. For one thing, though there
have been a recent spate of bug fixes, browsing with VoiceOver still
leaves much to be desired if you need efficiency. For another, the
transition to either a different browser or a different version of
Windows would be quite a lot cheaper and less effort. Don't get me
wrong, there are things that the Mac does well at (enough for me to
have owned several of them), but IMO browsing isn't one of them. Even
on I7 machines with SSD's and 8gb of RAM or more, I frequently get
busies from VoiceOver for extended periods when browsing ... a joy
that you won't have experienced yet if you're coming at this from an
iPhone.

Well, as long as you're going into it informed then I shall wish you
good luck. Call me cynical perhaps, but while we're here talking about
it I may as well take the opportunity to point out that, should you
decide VoiceOver is a steaming pile after a while, you can get Windows
running very nicely on Apple hardware nowadays. It wouldn't be XP
unless you run it in a virtual machine (seeing as Apple dropped
support for XP long before Microsoft), but at least there'll be a way
back of sorts.

Good luck man. Keep us posted if you find any decent games to practice with.

Subject: [Audyssey] bgt dll call interface question

Hi all,
I just spent a while playing around with the dll interface in bgt,
working on trying to interface with NVDA's controller library, and now
have a couple questions for anybody who knows how dlls work better
than I do (that's everybody).
All of the functions in the library take a parameter of wchar_t. Is
that the same as char* (bgt's way of passing a string)? The specific
function I'm trying to get work is brailleMessage, but whenever I try
giving it some info the display just puts up its I don't know what
these characters are ascii codes. I know there must be a way of
interfacing with the library, as its used in the built-in screen
reader speech functions, but I can't seem to figure out what it is.
Does anybody know how I can make this thing work, or have some
pointers (no pun intended) to get me going in the right direction? I'd
really like to try implementing braille support into some stuff, and
even more so to start learning how to make the dll magic go.

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-07-29 Thread Nick Adamson
Hi all.
The content of this thread is making me a little uncomfortable.
You may not agree with what has happened but encouraging piracy and personal
attacks makes no one look good and especially from people normally respected in
our community.
As there is nothing you can do about the Q9 situation why not try to see the
positives. People who wouldn't normally play audio games are being introduced
to them and that may lead to them finding out what else is out there.
Thanks.
Nick.

even if audiogames.net won't help people to do so unless the games are
 officially abandonware.
Hence why the pages for the bsc titles and bavisoft games are still up.
this is what the unknown license type is for, ie, we don't know what has

I will not therefore remove Q9's entry, but I won't advertise sleasy either,

I will put a note to the effect the rights have been sold but the game is

2015-07-29 Thread Ian Reed

+1 Nick Adamson.

Also remember that many developers read the audiogames.net forum and
this mailing list.
Seeing how community members respond to one developer's choices is an
easy way to guess how they would act towards other developers whenever
they find something disagreeable.

Expressing frustration in a civil manner is one thing, but name calling
and open endorsement of piracy is entirely different.

[Audyssey] bgt dll call interface question

2015-07-29 Thread john
Hi all,
I just spent a while playing around with the dll interface in bgt, working
on trying to interface with NVDA's controller library, and now have a couple
questions for anybody who knows how dlls work better than I do (that's
everybody).
All of the functions in the library take a parameter of wchar_t. Is that the
same as char* (bgt's way of passing a string)? The specific function I'm trying
to get work is brailleMessage, but whenever I try giving it some info the
display just puts up its I don't know what these characters are ascii codes.
I know there must be a way of interfacing with the library, as its used in the
built-in screen reader speech functions, but I can't seem to figure out what it
is. Does anybody know how I can make this thing work, or have some pointers (no
pun intended) to get me going in the right direction? I'd really like to try
implementing braille support into some stuff, and even more so to start
learning how to make the dll magic go.

[Audyssey] Good browser game for learning vo

2015-07-29 Thread dark
Tomorrow I probably will be buying a mac as an iternet machine. i will still
have my xp box (when the error is fixed), and don't plan to move too much of my
activities off it (for one thing Itunes is evil), however net browsing and xp
isn't being friendly due to microsoft being stupid.
I'll still of course have my xp machine for games and probably most things,
however obviously I'd like to get used to vo on a mac and nothing helps so much
with that than games.

i know that there aren't many dedicated games for mac (virtually none in fact),
however, it would be great if there were some games kicking around that I
could practice using vo on. I'm thinking particularly of things like browser
games, sinse it's net browsing I'll be doing, maybe interactive fiction or
other text games.

Any suggestions? oddly enough iI'm not particularly playing any browser games
at the secondd, though as I said any thoughts would be good.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] bgt dll call interface question

2015-07-29 Thread Damien Sykes-Pendleton

Hi John,
wchar I believe is a unicode character, so in other words a 16-bit character
instead of 8.
If you like, you can contact me offlist. I'll try to get you going with
this.

Kind regards,
Damien.

2015-07-29 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,

Yes, lets drop the stealing topic. It has no place on this list, and
it is getting very close to breaking the list guidelines. So with that
in mind I consider that subject closed.
