Mud connector lists a bunch of muds support sound include Dune, based on the sci-fi novels by Frank Herbert. On Wed, 16 Mar 2016, dark wrote: Hi Paul. Vipmud is good, I like it myself. Screen reader settings in mud usually disabled ascii maps and directions, spammy text that pops up a little too often, occasions when text colour is used to indicate stuff, and usually reduce the amount of lines for repetitive things like battles to just a few to make it easier to catch up. Discworld mud I had trouble with, it was a detailed game with good descriptions from the books, but I just found it hard to find anything to really do in the game, there's a hole list of features but no real quests or anything and it was just depressing to run into people I knew from the books like Moist von lipwig or corporal knobs and not be able to interact with them, but there are people who sware by it. Alteraeon is exceptional as a game, however the problem is the MushZ client is so good, it's the one instance I don't use Vip for a mud sinse it effectively turns the game into a full blow audio rpg with background music, sounds instead of text for common things like battles and spells, one key press action keys etc. Of course text is still sent and needs reading, but it's not really an accurate depiction of what a mud is like. Lots of people will play Alteraeon with the MushZ pack and then assume every mudh should have full background sounds and such and be disappointed when they find muds are basically text games, then again playing Alteraeon without the mushZ pack would be missing out or a massive amount of atmosphere and fun and the great work done by the devs of both MushZ and Alteraeon in supporting it. So, I'd suggest playing Alteraeon with MushZ just as a great experience of a fantastic audio online rpg, quite independent of most other muds, and then trying something like aardwolf, Materiamagica, classic six dragons, Clok or discworld (there are some descriptions on audiogames.net), as an intro to muds. Aardwolf particularly has a very good mud bnewbie school and lots of handy shortcuts and directions to make things friendly, as well as an interesting distribution of mobs and quests per area and lots of helpful players. On the other hand, it's up to you, I actually need to get back on Alteraeon myself and attempt to srot out my character. You have a choice of 9 races and 4 main classes, and those classes branch into subclasses. It has a pretty detailed character creation process. You choose 2 out of 6 elemental spheres, primary and secondary. Elemental include white (holy), black (dark magic), red (fire), blue (water), green (earth), and yellow (air) which are, as described in the mud, placed in a 6 pointed star, and you can only choose an element that is next to your primary choice. You cannot choose an element that counters your primary choice. For example, I chose white as my primary, so my choices for my secondary were yellow or red. elements that counter each other are: white counters black, red counters blue, and green counters yellow. Once you have learned a spell from your primary and your secondary, you can cast a spell from each elemental and combine them to create a new spell. As i said, my primary is white and secondary is yellow, so when i begin to cast "holy," and cast "gust" to combine them to create "sparks". Each elemental spells combination creates different spells. There is a limit break feature which a special skill that one is able to perform once the limit meter is full. The limit meter is measured by percentage and is accessed through the "limit" command. One will have to set the limit break, and there is 4 levels of limit break. You can set one limit break at every limit level. Every level has a choice of which action you want for your skill. In order to set the limit break, you have to create it first. To create it, you have to name the limit break, choose which skill you want, create a command for the action, and set descriptions for yourself (limit char), the victim (limit vic), and the room (limit room. This is what you, the victim, and the room will see when performing the limit break. There are plenty of other features that I have not yet experience with. The web page has more information: eotmud.com. As for the screen reader option, I have not had any issues with it, but like I said, haven't been on the mud long. Hope this helps. Re: [Audyssey] final fantasy style Mud
Hi Dark, Gave Vip mud a go last night, it seemed nice and easy to navigate around , so for ease of use while I'm learning muds I'll definitely stick with this. I've wanted to try Alteraeon for a while now so might start out on that just to get me used to it. I did try the squaresoft mud yesterday and shortly after starting the game it advised if you are blind to type blind to make the game work better for blind people. So I turned on that setting, not playing muds before though I have absolutely no idea what the setting actually did though lol. Interesting about there being a diskworld mud , as I love all the pratchett books, actually just reading the last one he wrote the shepherds crown at the moment, although I got it for Christmas but have been putting off reading it knowing it will be the last diskworld novel. But definitely once I'm a little more experienced with muds I'll have to try the diskworld one Paul -Original Message- From: Gamers [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of dark Sent: Tuesday, March 15, 2016 10:19 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] final fantasy style Mud Hi Paul. As I remember this one doesn't have any adaptations for blind players like low spam modes, also it's not a case of specific muds using specific clients (with the exception of the alteraeon pack), it's more a case of finding a client you want to use for mudding and using that for any mud you want to play. As I recall quests were rather difficult sinse they were none specific and people I've heard got irritated with finding stuff, which is not to say don't play it, that's just what I've heard. Likewise most muds are relatively playable even without specific adaptations, though attles might be difficult if the text scrolls fast unless you have your screen reader set to read on uba speed, still feel free to give it a try. For mudding generally gh I'd probably recommend one of the more blind friendly muds to get started with. alteraeon is exceptional, but has it's own custom mushZ sound client which makes it effectively an audiogame rather than a mud, so unless you play alteraeon with a standard mud client you don't get a good intro. There are however several more with good adaptations, Aardwolf, discworld (though I could never get into that game), six dragons, clok etc, check the audiogames.net database under muds or check whitestick.co.uk, also the instructions for vipmud have some good suggestions. Alternatively, just dive in with squaresoft mud and see where it goes. hth. Dark. Thanks Sean, I did get it to work after adding the plug ins you mentioned, but for ease of use whilst I get used to Muds think I'll just stick with the VIP mud for the moment. The only thing I have ever updated has been the mushclient part of the engine manually however if you update it with its updater it will update itself easily enough. The way I have updated it is download the mushclient latest from gammon.com.au/files/mushclient and then downloaded the installer with highest number, then extracted it with 7zip, clobbered the $ pluginsdir and the nsi script file then coppied the contents of the archive directly to the mush-z root overriding all the files. On restarting the client you will get an update message. I have not bothered to much but yeah. As for vipmud I don't play muds enough to actually bother buy that. Sadly bending the engine only works for the text not sounds though if you knew what you were doing you could probably reverse engineer the entire thing, as all the files are simple xml things. Re: [Audyssey] final fantasy style Mud
Hi Paul, Another Final Fantasy based MUD and has a screen reader option is End of Time. I just started playing yesterday, so I can't give any in depth review of it, but the newbie school is very informative. Site is eotmud.com, port 4000. Re: [Audyssey] final fantasy style Mud
Hi Paul. Alternatively, just dive in with squaresoft mud and see where it goes. hth. Dark. I'll have a hunt around their website and google to see what I can find about any recommendations for blind people playing this mud and which client they use Paul -Original Message- From: Gamers [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Tobias Vinteus Sent: Monday, March 14, 2016 10:15 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] final fantasy style Mud Hi, I haven't done much mudding myself over the years. I used to play a star wars-based mud called KobraMuD with only a text-based telnet client and braille display on my Linux box. Thinking I might take up mudding once again I stumbled upon this potential gem whil researching which mud to start with. I don't know if there are any specials cripts/modifications for VIPmud och mush-z for this mud, only that the description at Mud Connector mentioned that they had many blind players .Maybe the game documentation or theplayers or staff might know more. hth, Tobias On Mon, 14 Mar 2016, Paul Lemm wrote: Hi Tobias I've never really played about with MUD's before, I know a lot of people use mush z for alter eon , do you know can I use that for muds like this unofficial square soft one? Re: [Audyssey] final fantasy style Mud
Hi Paul. vipmud is what I use, and I don't go in for all that scripting stuff either beyond a couple of aliases. I'm no expect, but the output to screen readers and separation of incoming and out going commands is really helpful. No you can't use MushZ. MushZ is just made for alteraeon. it is however based on a program called Musclient which you can use, though you'd need to install scripts yourself. Personally, with the exception of Alteraeon I use vipmud from www.gmaagames.com for muds in general, sinse I find it far easier to use. It's a commercial program if you want, but the commercial features are such that you can go on using the free one as long as you like with no problems other than a nag screen (the only thing you miss is msp sound support and only about three or four muds have that anyway). So, I'd recommend giving vipmud a try.
