[Audyssey] Blind Gamers Being Taken Seriously?

2011-12-16 Thread Jeremy Hartley
that we are being wathched, and judged, even if
we don't know it is being done. I respect Dark, and hope he keeps up what
he is doing. I am bringing up a terrible fact, that all of us, whether we
want to or not, have to choke down! We need to be one step ahead if we are
to be taken seriously. That means checking spelling and the like.

So, after all this rambling, what I hope to get across is that we need to do
more than just write ideas to devs. We need to really make an effort to
educate devs. Like it or not, we are viewed as inferior by a lot of people,
not just game developers, and when we can come to grips with that, we will
be stronger. Do I mean that the world is out to get us? Heck no. Nobody
is out to get us. What I mean in all sincerity is that we need to push our
strengths, whether we like it or not. Let's all focus on what we can do and
how we can teach others, rather than whine, beg, and scream. Trustm e. It
will work.

[Audyssey] SilverSword PDF from SilverSword-rpg.com is accessible. Was: RE: Silversword question

2011-12-13 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hi Phil and all,

I downloaded the silver sword manual from the silversword-rpg.com site under
the downloads section. I am using the latest version of acrobat reader.
Not sure which version of acrobat reader you have, but it comes up perfectly
fine with links and headings for each section. In fact, I didn't even have
to change the reading order.

Wonder if Mario already updated the pdf just in the last three hours? If
so, wow, that is quick work.

By the way, the Game Mechanics you posted from your OCR copy were just as it
says in the pdf.

I found a Silversword_help.pdf file but it is graphic and needs an OCR

About the mechanics
Silversword is a game in the genre of The Bards Tale. This means, it tries
to simulate a roleplaying session like you might know from Dungeons Dragons.

you control a group (your party') of up to seven members. The first four
slots are melee slots, meaning that this is the front line when facing
enemies. The last three slots are the members in the second row, they have
to use ranged weapons, special items or magic spells to participate in
combat.

Hi all,

Over the passed few months I have been working on a free book on
Python programming for beginners with a bent towards game programming
in Python. Unfortunately, the documentation isn't ready, but I have
written a few sample games to go along with the book. Since Lisa asked
the question about programming games I was wondering how many others
share her interest in perhaps writing games in Python. If so I happen
to have a few very simple sample games written in Python aimed at a
very beginner level. These definitely are not very complex affares.
Mostly they are simple text based games like Guess the Number, Paper
Scissors Rock, Blackjack, Number Stumper, and things like that.
Entertaining as a first project, but not much else. Any interest in
these sample games?

Cheers!

Then, select save target as if you are in internet explorer, or save link as

[Audyssey] Here are the instructions for connecting to dragon Realms with vipmud or similar clients.

2010-01-13 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hi there.

I am resending this message from earlier today, since I don't think it went
through because I forgot to trim the message. grin

Here you go.

Hi there.

In fact, it indeed works. I just did it about three minutes ago, and I will
log on again very soon.

Here is what I did.

I logged onto dragonrealms.net and signed up for an account.

After getting my account, and logging back into the site, including hitting
that go play button. I was brought into the initial screen for my account
wich has a group of radio buttons , which allow you to start a new character
or choose your character, , and then it presents a group of radio buttons
that gives you the choice for picking the wizard front end and a few other
ones. I choose the wizard front end radio button, and hit enter on the go
play! button.

Now, since I have active X disabled for this site in IE and firefox, rather
than launching the wizard client, a page comes up and says

Preparing to launch DragonRealms Trial for the Wizard FE. If your game does
not start automatically,

I right click on the link that says click here, and a choose save link as in
FireFox or save target as if you are using IE.

My character's name is galphner, so the filename is galphner.sal

Once the file is saved, you will want to open the .sal file in notepad.

Here is part of the contents of the one I just saved

UPPORT=5535
GAME=WIZ
GAMECODE=DR
FULLGAMENAME=Wizard_Front_End
GAMEFILE=WIZARD.EXE
GAMEHOST=prime.dr.game.play.net
GAMEPORT=4901
KEY=ba247ea0ffaf8c1529ae40e9693da03b

You will want to make special note of the gamehost gameport and key entries.
You will want to copy your key to the clipboard. In other words, copy
everything to the right of the equals sign in the line that begins with key=
If memory serves, the key will expire within fifteen minutes of generation,
so you will want to be quick when you save the file and then run vipmud or
your client of choice.

So you would fill out your game host as prime.dr.game.play.net
and your port as 4901

When you connect to the gameHost, it will act like you are connected to a
blank connection. THis is where you paste your key that you copied to the
clipboard int your mud client and press enter

You then want to type, all in caps, the words
FE/JAVA
and press enter.

You should be in and playing at that point.

I just logged in, and am now playing dragonrealms with vipmud.

Hi there.

Well, I was just about to send a message with instructions on how to use
simutronics games with vipmud, since I posted about this a few months
ago.

Unfortunately, I seem to no longer have a play.net account, which is
where

dragonrealms and gemstone IV are located! grin

But anyway, here is a copy of a message I sent to the list regarding
logging
into gemstone IV with vipmud. I know the question is regarding
dragonrealms, but I am sure that other than the difference in host names,
the instructions would be the same.

The below message talks about logging into the website as if you were
going to login with the Wizard client. What you will want to do though
is

download the .sal file that comes up when you click on the go play link.
The only way I was able to download this .sal file without Internet
explorer trying to launch the wizard front end, was to use fire fox.
That

is why in the below message, I refer to firefox. You could probably stop
the wizard frontend from launching if you disable active X for the
dragonrealms.net site.

Use the below at your own risk. Beings that it is the Christmas Holiday,
I will be away from my computer for most of the next few days.

I would suggest that you do a search in the play.net forums regarding
logging in with a telnet client, that was where I originally got the
instructions.

Basicly, what you will need to do is get the userKey from the .sal file
of

your character. This is how simutronics keeps people from logging in for
free.

When you use vipmud to connect to whatever the host and port are, you
will

not see anything when you connect. This is normal. You will need to
paste in the user key into vipmud's window and press enter. Again, you
will see or hear nothing. You then want to type FE/JAVA all in caps as
shown and press enter. You should then be good to go.

Again, this is for gemstone IV but it will work with whatever
dragonrealms

uses as their host.

Rest assured, Simutronics muds including dragon realms can be played with
vipmud, at least, they could be played a few months ago. grin

Jeremy
Begin message.

Ok, I managed to just get into gemstone iv with VipMud. What I had to do
was use firefox to log into my account. When I clicked the go play
button,
a page came up saying that if my browser didn't launch using active x to
click here. When I did, firefox brought a file save dialog with my
character's .sal file, ie, grogrond.sal. I then saved it to disc, and
opened it in notepad, and copied the key to the clipboard, and used the
host
of prime.gs4.game.play.net and the port of 4900 entered into the host and
port sections in vipMud. Then, I pasted the key from the clipboard and
hit
enter. I then typed FE/JAVA and hit enter. And I am now in!

Re: [Audyssey] help with dragonrealms

2009-12-23 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hi there.

Well, I was just about to send a message with instructions on how to use
simutronics games with vipmud, since I posted about this a few months ago.

Unfortunately, I seem to no longer have a play.net account, which is where
dragonrealms and gemstone IV are located! grin

But anyway, here is a copy of a message I sent to the list regarding logging
into gemstone IV with vipmud. I know the question is regarding
dragonrealms, but I am sure that other than the difference in host names,
the instructions would be the same.

The below message talks about logging into the website as if you were going
to login with the Wizard client. What you will want to do though is
download the .sal file that comes up when you click on the go play link.
The only way I was able to download this .sal file without Internet explorer
trying to launch the wizard front end, was to use fire fox. That is why in
the below message, I refer to firefox. You could probably stop the wizard
frontend from launching if you disable active X for the dragonrealms.net
site.

Use the below at your own risk. Beings that it is the Christmas Holiday, I
will be away from my computer for most of the next few days.

I would suggest that you do a search in the play.net forums regarding
logging in with a telnet client, that was where I originally got the
instructions.

Basicly, what you will need to do is get the userKey from the .sal file of
your character. This is how simutronics keeps people from logging in for
free.

When you use vipmud to connect to whatever the host and port are, you will
not see anything when you connect. This is normal. You will need to paste
in the user key into vipmud's window and press enter. Again, you will see
or hear nothing. You then want to type FE/JAVA all in caps as shown and
press enter. You should then be good to go.

Again, this is for gemstone IV but it will work with whatever dragonrealms
uses as their host.

Rest assured, Simutronics muds including dragon realms can be played with
vipmud, at least, they could be played a few months ago. grin

Jeremy
Begin message.

Ok, I managed to just get into gemstone iv with VipMud. What I had to do
was use firefox to log into my account. When I clicked the go play button,
a page came up saying that if my browser didn't launch using active x to
click here. When I did, firefox brought a file save dialog with my
character's .sal file, ie, grogrond.sal. I then saved it to disc, and
opened it in notepad, and copied the key to the clipboard, and used the host
of prime.gs4.game.play.net and the port of 4900 entered into the host and
port sections in vipMud. Then, I pasted the key from the clipboard and hit
enter. I then typed FE/JAVA and hit enter. And I am now in!

Hi Bryce,

I used to play Dragon Realms. I think it's the best mud there is, but I
found the frustration of using ZMud too much and eventually gave it up.
I'm not sure what to tell you: Dragon Realms scrolls by as fast as any
other mud on the Net. I knhow it's a dumb suggestion, but I suppose you
could slow your voice rate down some. That would give you greater
comprehensibility but of course you would be lagging behind whatever the
mobs are doing. The only really bright thing I can tell you is that the
maker of VIP Mud, the mud client designed especially for blind players, is
considering adding Simutronics support in the next version. You might try
writing to him. He's at GMAGames and can be reached through the contact
form there.

Hi, I was told by a friend that you guys would be able to help me. I'm
currently trying this online text-based game called Dragon Realms. I'm
having trouble with it though, cause I'm totally blind and I need to be
able to read what I'm doing in a battle, but I can't because the messages
from the monsters attacking me go by to fast and I can't keep up. I was
wondering if their was way to make this better for me, I really love the
game, I used to play games like final fantasy 11 and world of warcraft
which weren't all that accessible, and then I discovered this game and
it's much more ccessible except for the minor inconvientses, which why I
come to this list, I need help!!! So, if someone would be willing to help
me I would be verry greatful. Thanks

Hey there folks.

I almost wasn't going to post to the list with this question, but this is
sort of game related, and all the other lists and avenues I have tried
are either no longer in existence, or the automated subscribing method
appears to be broken, for example, on blindtech. grin

Anyway, a few days ago, a very special person obtained an apple II e
machine for me, equipped with many disks with TextTalker and talking
writer, Oregon trail, space invaders, haunted house, and a whole host of
other games that I'm sure some of you know and remember from our apple
days.

I will keep this question short. I am recalling a lot of commands from
my days with the Apple II gs and echo, such as run, brun, int, load, and
catalog. However, I can not seem to remember the screen review commands
that was a part of all textTalker based programs. I did remember last
night that if I hit Control+l it got me into review mode. Not sure how I
remembered that after almost sixteen years. Heh. But anyway, does anyone
here remember the other screen review commands?

I would love to play some of these games, or even port some of them to
windows just for kicks and a programming exercise.

Anyway, to not clutter up the list, I will include my e-mail address if
you want to reply privately.

Re: [Audyssey] Eamon deluxe

2009-12-11 Thread Jeremy Hartley

I play it all the time with windows XP service pack 3 and jaws 10 or 11.

The main trick is to press alt+enter if you don't hear speech. Also be
aware that sometimes the menus require you to hit a number, and other times
you can arrow down. And, to make it even more confusing, I can recall one
time where if you type the number of a selection, you will be in the new
menu, while still other times, you must type a number then the enter key.

IT also does help to use the jaws cursor or we mouse pointer a lot as well,
since the screen will redraw at the most inopportune times!

Re: [Audyssey] Eamon deluxe

2009-12-11 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Yep, I did do that, and for the most part, Eamon works pretty darn well. I
have never minded using the jaws cursor.

The only little problem I had, and the reason I mentioned pressing alt+enter
whenever you didn't hear speech, and the numbers sometimes going straight to
other parts of the program, is that at one point, I would type a number,
hear no speech, only to find that the screen had changed, and I went round
and round in this maddening circle until I discovered what was happening.
grin

All in all though, with those modifications, and the little quirks, eamon is
very usable, at least on this XP machine.

I am going through each adventure, since I never played these on the Apple
when I was younger. Very fun way to pass the time on a rainy day when work
is slow. grin

Hi jeremy.

Yes, the menues are a problem, but luckily you don't need to use them too
much, and certainly not in the adventures. The majority are streight
up/down menues, so it's only necessary to use arrows to move, and so long
as you count you should be okay.

Only the first menue, the startup menue has numbers and moves in that
way.

For screen formatting and text sized issues, check the faq, sinse writing
the character display to 80 instead of 40 is a good idea.

This only takes a miner modification of the eamon.bas file though.

hth.

Beware the grue!

What in the world do you mean by saying don't pause too long because you may

[Audyssey] Playing Nethack, either the DOS or Windows Version with Jaws, any tips?

2009-11-28 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hello folks,

With all the testing and playing I have been doing with Entombed recently, I
thought it would be fun to check out some of the Rogue-like games out
there. I am referring to NetHack in this message.

I downloaded the DOS and Windows versions from Nethack.org. I know that
Michael has written an access.nh file which should be copied to the
defaults.nh file if one is playing the DOS version. I did also see that
there is no equivalent access file for the windows port, but after looking
at the various settings, I am sure that the same changes can be made.

I decided to give the DOS version a go. I realize from other discussions on
this list that some listers have problems running programs in DOS windows.
Some of you have complained about the slowness in which a DOS program runs
on things like windows xp. I am happy to say, I somehow don't have that
problem, and I am able to play EamonDX and Fallthru without any real lag of
time, and use Jaws version 10 or 11 for reading the screen in the DOS
window.

Ok, now onto my question for some of you real experienced NetHack players
out there. Other than turning all punctuation on, and using the main jaws
cursor commands, are there any other configurations I need to make? I am
still getting used to what all those ascii symbols on the screen stand for,
and have been using the slash command and reading the manual as much as I
can.

I'm pretty sure that it will just take some stumbling around, but I figured
I would consult with any experienced netHack player, to see if they found
other settings that worked better than those in the access.nh file, or other
useful Jaws commands

If nobody has anything else to add, then I will just keep on poking around
here and see how far I get. grin

Thanks Dark,

Thanks for the note about Angband.

Hi Jeremy.

I've personally never had much luck with ascii games at all, owing to
my lack of a braille display.

I have however been very impressed with Angband found at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angband_(video_game) for some great in built
access features, such as ability to get a list of all on screen monsters
and objects, ability to have a moveable curser which works like a curser
in a screen reader and can flip betwene interesting objects and monsters
on screen, --- and the character of course.

I'd be very interested to know if these features existed in Nethack,
sinse other than the highlighter curser, I couldn't find anything, which
has been another contributing factor to me having difficulties with the
game.

Currently I play angband with a combination of my remaining site, an easy
visibility graphical tile set, hal, and these access features, but I
have been in discussion with the developer about adding more access
features to the game to allow it to be playable entirely by commands
alone.

Such features I've suggested include a directional look command, and a
basic distance factor expressed as coordinates to tell you the distance
betwene your character and the object highlighted by Anband's highlight
box.

Hopefully we'll see these in a future release of Angband, and in the
mean time, sinse Angband does I believe just use the standard ascii,
I'd recommend it to people who might ahve braille displays due to it's
great access features.

Oh btw, if Angband can have these features added, they could also be added
into angband innumerable varients, some of which are full rpg games
with quests, many environments etc, which could then be accessible
too.

All the best,

Dark.

without any real lag of time, and use Jaws version 10 or 11 for reading
the screen in the DOS window.

Ok, now onto my question for some of you real experienced NetHack players
out there. Other than turning all punctuation on, and using the main
jaws cursor commands, are there any other configurations I need to make?
I am still getting used to what all those ascii symbols on the screen
stand for, and have been using the slash command and reading the manual
as much as I can.

I'm pretty sure that it will just take some stumbling around, but I
figured I would consult with any experienced netHack player, to see if
they found other settings that worked better than those in the access.nh
file, or other useful Jaws commands

If nobody has anything else to add, then I will just keep on poking
around here and see how far I get. grin

First of all, you can play it with windows using the same nh file you use
in dos. You'll want to turn off the virtual keypad in view menu and make
sure you're set to ASCII in the map mode. If you have a braille display,
download my game pack for the pac mate and you'll find a PPC version of
Nethack. Even if you have only a display, the includeed NH file will make
a lot more sense to you when using a display because it looks more like
the symbols on a map--dots 4 5 6 being a vertical wall for instance. HTH

Hello folks,

With all the testing and playing I have been doing with Entombed
recently, I

thought it would be fun to check out some of the Rogue-like games out
there. I am referring to NetHack in this message.

I downloaded the DOS and Windows versions from Nethack.org. I know that
Michael has written an access.nh file which should be copied to the
defaults.nh file if one is playing the DOS version. I did also see that
there is no equivalent access file for the windows port, but after
looking

at the various settings, I am sure that the same changes can be made.

I decided to give the DOS version a go. I realize from other discussions

Re: [Audyssey] the shields of q9

2009-11-22 Thread Jeremy Hartley
What I do is activate the shield with spacebar, and then I switch back to
the club or slingshot. The shield will do damage for a certain amount of
time, while you are facing the enemies, so I get the best of both worlds by
using the shield for its timed usage, and wack the other enemies with the
club or slingshot while the shield is still active. You only need to press
spacebar once per shield.

One thing I'm not clear on is how to use them. Do you activate them with
the space bar and face the enemies so they can attack and get their own
medicine back at them twice?, or do you still have to hit the space bar
each time you want to do damage. Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 upcoming change log

2009-11-17 Thread Jeremy Hartley
I actually like jumping with the up arrow as opposed to the control key. I
know there was some discussion about how to jump, and some said that the
only way they could jump across the pits was to hold down the up arrow key
and then tap right arrow. I just played q9 again before writing this
message, and I can say that I have never pressed and held up arrow to jump.
I just tap up arrow and then hit the right arrow a few times while in the
air. I just tried practicing doing the same jump with control, and although
it is just a pinky tap away, I just like having the movement controls, other
than running of course, controlled by one hand. Yeah I know you could hit
the right control key as well, but I just don't see why.

Whatever Philip decides, I will continue to support the game, having
purchased it a few days ago. This was just my 1.3 cents.

Hi Philip,
Yeah, i have a couple miner suggestions I'd like to see in the next
release if you don't mind. There are basically a couple of keyboard
modifications I think would make the game a little more user friendly.
First, when running I'd like to see the runn command asigned to shift+left
arrow and shift+right arrow. This is a very common keyboard asignment and
it would make Q9 more like the mainstream games as well as Mysteries of
the Ancients. It makes more sense to me than control+left arrow and
control+right arrow.
Second, if you wouldn't mind I'd like to see jump moved to the control
key. Again this is much easier for me than trying to press up arrow and
the left or right arrow key to jump left/right

Thanks.

Hi again folks,

I am working on a 1.0.1 update release of the Q9 game which, of course,
will be free for all registered users. So far, the change log looks like
this:

Version 1.0.1:
Added: The alt key can now be used to quickly cycle between your weapons.
Added: A section on saving games is now present in the manual.
Added: Anchor links to the manual which will enable quicker navigation.
Fixed: Fortune fields will no longer create mysterious ghost enemies.
Fixed: Fortune fields can no longer be generated in the middle of a pit.
Fixed: The sounds of the deus shield have been lowered slightly.
Fixed: Going to a new world from the bonus level by using a cheat code
now works properly.

Version 1.0:
Initial release.

I will be adding the other game mode and score posting in the 1.1 release
most likely as it takes a little more work, this is mainly a
bugfix/general improvement patch. Is there anything else that any of you
want to see changed?

Kind regards,

You alocate skill points by arrowing to the skill you wish to raise, and

with my newbish questions, but for now...

How do I alocate skill points? I hit c, tab to my desired character,
they might have 8 skill points to alocate for example so I pick a
skill I want to increase, hit enter on it, then scroll back to confirm
changes and get told that my changes have been saved. But when I look
under skills, my character is still at level 1 for that skill and when
I go back to alocate skill points I'll still have the same amount of
points to be alocated. Does that make sense?

I did manage to google Oregon trail for DOS a while back and came on the

Windows Operating systems, I know that Vista needed some real configuring to
make it happen, and I assume the same holds true for windows seven.

But, it may be worth you googling Oregon trail DOS version. I haven't tried

[Audyssey] Games as a Navigation Teaching Tool, was: Re: My MOTA Decision

2009-10-30 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hi folks,

I am a bit late to this thread, but I just wanted to say that I totally
agree with the thought that it is great to have a game that raises the bar
and challenges people to stretch themselves mentally. This does not mean
that I disagree with Thomas's decision about making side scrollers. I play
Mota now, and will buy it when it comes out.
I can see his point, as well as understand how frustrating 3d type
environments can be for some to navigate.

Many years ago, I too had problems trying to get my head around games that
were not just 2d or side scroller in nature. I think a lot of the
frustration stemmed from a lack of teaching about reading maps and
understanding more advanced navigation concepts.

To better understand the complexities of some of the games like Monkey
Business, Sarah, SOD and others, I first decided to approach things as if I
were walking around myself, even standing up while playing sometimes, and
making 90 degree turns quite literally, just to picture my character
walking, turning, and exploring. This helped me some. But the more I just
gutted out the frustration and played the games, the more I was taught about
navigating. Now, after several years, I prefer the more challenging
environments.

I guess what I am getting at is that sometimes we must get out of our
comfort zones, even during play time, if we want to find ourselves
challenged. Am I saying that everyone will and should learn how to navigate
more complex environments? Absolutely not. I just think we all need to be
gently reminded about the fact that sometimes a challenge is just what we
need.

I remember many years ago learning on my first computer. A lot of what I
did was play games, in order to get a feel for typing and computer usage. I
think a lot of us did that. We used games as teaching tools. We can do the
same thing when we play games that have the more complex navigation
environments. Games can be great tools for learning.

maybe this will work for some of you, maybe not others, it is just one man's
opinion.

Tom,

The one comment I'd make in response to your post is that, though there
are
blind people out there who have difficulty navigating 3D environments,
there

are also those of us who don't have that problem. I'd much rather have a
game that raises the bar for some than keep it low so that some can be
comfortable. If you're wanting to create something that's truly
three-dimensional, please do.

Hello.

I will now post my findings regarding this method of connecting to
simutronics games, just after trying to connect using a new character.

I have seen an article similar to the post below, in an issue of audyssey
magazine from a while back. In fact, what prompted me to write my
messages a few months ago to this list regarding playing simutronics games
with a mud client was that, following those instructions given below,
there did not appear to be a file called gse.~xt in the root directory or
any directory for that matter. I then ran a windows search on all files
and folders on the hard drive, and no files of any kind were listed with
the ~xt extention.

After reading chad's message, I decided to try it all again.

So, I just recreated an account, created a character from the website,
selected the wizard front end, downloaded the game launcher and connected
via the wizard front end, and quit to log out. Then, went to the
downloads section of the play.net site, downloaded the Simutronics desktop
game entry, installed it, ran it, selected my character and the wizard
front end, logged in, quit, and then looked for the sge.~xt file in the
root directory of the hard drive. And, like I said, there was no file on
my hard drive with that extention. Also, and finally, I did tripplecheck
to make sure that I have show hidden files turned on in the options view
tab.

After looking at the downloads page, the simutronics desktop game entry
program appeared to be the only game entry program around. Perhaps
simutronics has changed something between gemstone III and gemstone IV?
When were you able to successfully log into these muds in the way
described below?

Thanks for posting this, and I will monkey around with the other files
listed in the simutronics directories at some point. Maybe all the info
is hidden in another file with another extention. grin

Hey Chad, I will certainly give this a go. I did notice last night in the

plsted may not work, but I found alternative instructions from about a
month ago on a Gemstone IV forum regarding playing with a non-supported
Simutronics client. They are similar to what I originally posted, just
looking for a different file with a .sal extension. I've rewritten the
instructions in places for conciseness and clarification.

1. Log in to your Simutronics account at the GS website and go to the Go
Play! page.
2. Select the character with which you wish to play. Don't log in to the
game yet.

3. Select either the Wizard or Stormfront as your client.
4. Click the Go Play! button. When you do this, your web browser should
hopefully attempt to open a file ending in .sal. Save that file to your
disk.
5. Open the saved .sal file in Notepad. The most important lines are the
last three lines, starting with GAMEHOST, GAMEPORT, and KEY.
6. Now go into GMUD or your client of choice. Enter whatever comes after
the '=' in the GAMEHOST line as the Host to which you want to connect.

7. Enter the GAMEPORT into your client's field.
8. Connect to the game. The client will connect and then appear to hang.
What it's doing is waiting for your KEY and your front-end choice. We'll
enter

that in the next two steps.
9. Copy whatever comes after the '=' in the KEY line of the .sal file
directly into the MUD client and hit enter. This will send your key to the
Simu server;

it will seem as if there is no response.
10. Now type into your MUD client the following (and then hit enter):
/FE:JAVA

That should connect you to the game. Good luck!

[Audyssey] I got in to gemstone iv with VipMud! Was: Re: Follow-up to Simutronics playing through telnet

2009-10-19 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hey folks,

My guess is that you could do the same thing in IE, but you will have to
disable active-x?

Anyway, just my findings.

Re: [Audyssey] playing Simutronics games via telnet

2009-10-18 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hello.

I will now post my findings regarding this method of connecting to
simutronics games, just after trying to connect using a new character.

I have seen an article similar to the post below, in an issue of audyssey
magazine from a while back. In fact, what prompted me to write my messages
a few months ago to this list regarding playing simutronics games with a mud
client was that, following those instructions given below, there did not
appear to be a file called gse.~xt in the root directory or any directory
for that matter. I then ran a windows search on all files and folders on
the hard drive, and no files of any kind were listed with the ~xt extention.

After reading chad's message, I decided to try it all again.

So, I just recreated an account, created a character from the website,
selected the wizard front end, downloaded the game launcher and connected
via the wizard front end, and quit to log out. Then, went to the downloads
section of the play.net site, downloaded the Simutronics desktop game entry,
installed it, ran it, selected my character and the wizard front end, logged
in, quit, and then looked for the sge.~xt file in the root directory of the
hard drive. And, like I said, there was no file on my hard drive with that
extention. Also, and finally, I did tripplecheck to make sure that I have
show hidden files turned on in the options view tab.

After looking at the downloads page, the simutronics desktop game entry
program appeared to be the only game entry program around. Perhaps
simutronics has changed something between gemstone III and gemstone IV?
When were you able to successfully log into these muds in the way described
below?

Thanks for posting this, and I will monkey around with the other files
listed in the simutronics directories at some point. Maybe all the info is
hidden in another file with another extention. grin

Subject: [Audyssey] playing Simutronics games via telnet

Hi, all. I recently was reviewing the archives of recent messages and saw
a discussion of the muds offered through Simutronics. In case anyone is
not aware, it is possible to play these games with your favorite mud
client of choice. To do so, you first must have an account with
Simutronics for the game you wish to play. Here is how I've been able to
play these muds through telnet in the past.

Once you have an account and have downloaded the Simutronics launcher
program and Wizard front-end, I'd also encourage you download a program
called Simutronics game entry, which will allow you to log into the game
by inputting your account name, password, and the game you wish to play.
It may be called Ultimate Simutronics Game Entry now. Once you have
logged in, the wizard program will load and put you into the game, and
you'll likely hear some music to let you know you're in the mud. Then
you'll have to type quit to exit the game.

Here's where the fun begins: playing through telnet. When you log into
the game with the wizard, a file is put into the root directory of your
hard drive, usually your C drive. The file is called gse.~xt. It
contains the authentication login key you'll need to access the game, and
as an added bonus, it contains the host name and port you will telnet
into, which I think is something like gs3.simutronics.net 4900. Copy
everything after key= to the clipboard, as it will be the login key you'll
use momentarily. It'll look like a long series of letters and numbers.

Now you will run your mud client of choice and telnet to
gs3.simutronics.net 4900. When you connect, your screen reader won't say
anything. Now just paste the login key and hit Enter, then type the word
JAVA, all in caps, and press Enter, whereupon you should see please wait
for connection to game server. Now you're playing the game using telnet.

If you log out and wait more than fifteen minutes or so, the login key you
used to get in will be invalid, so you'll need to enter the game using the
Simutronics Game Entry program and quit, following the steps I mentioned
earlier, in order to play once again.

The other Simutronics muds, Dragon realms, Alliance of Heroes, and Modus
Operandi, each have their own telnet host and port names, but you can find
those by looking for the gse.~xt file in the root directory of your hard
drive.

In case any are wondering, the Wikipedia entry on Gemstone IV mentions
that using telnet to play Simutronics games is possible, and truthfully
has been for years. I am not affiliated in any way with Simutronics, but
just wanted to let players know that one can play their games through
telnet and how to do so.

Hope you all will find it useful. Now if there was a way to make the
Wizard client for Legends of Terris or Legends of Cosrin accessible with
JAWS or Window-Eyes.

Re: [Audyssey] Simutronics Gemstone IV with ZMud, has anyone played this mud?

2009-09-13 Thread Jeremy Hartley
I should say also that you need to have an account with play.net before you
even attempt to connect to the mud with ZMud. The reason for this is
because you are first directed to the simutronics login server which asks
for your username and password. Note, this is not the same as your mud
character name! So you should go to play.net and create an account first.
You get a 30 day trial when you sign up, and you can cancel on the site at
any time before then.

Last note, I don't think you can just create a regular play.net account from
within ZMud. I just signed up with the simutronics site and then connected
with ZMud, so I could be mistaken.

You have to go to file|new|new character, and then select Gemstone III
from the list of muds. Keep in mind though, that this is not a list box,
jaws may not say anything when you land on it, but just hit your up and
down arrow keys to hear the muds. You can also type the first letter of a
mud. Notice I said you will need to select the Gemstone III selection,
rather than Gemstone IV. This, I think, is because III and IV were on the
same server. But, rest assured, you do in fact connect to GemStone IV
even though you are according to ZMud connecting to GemStone III. grin

Hello folks,

I did find out that zmud has support for these games. I am currently
using

set to all, I find that zmud does a really good job at rebuffering
the
screen. Jaws doesn't seem to repeat lines, and it does appear to
read

all
the new information that comes in. Of course, you have to use the
jaws

cursor to review the screen, and when a new line of text comes in the
screen
will scroll, making it sometimes dificult to keep on the same line.
All

that said, I am managing quite nicely with the beginning quests.

I was just wondering if any folks on this list have played the
Simutronics
games with zmud, specifically Gemstone IV, and may have some more
tips

they
could share?

Before anyone asks, due to the nature of the login and authentication
of

simutronics games, you can't use other clients such as VIP Mud or
Mushclient
to play. At least this is my understanding.

Hi all.
for txtfl to work, you will need sun java and the java access bridge.
I was able to brouse bits of the game but couldn't get it working, then
again I am not much of a txt strat fan.

it probably is accessable as long as java is loaded.
jaws 6.22 worked on this.
there are a few unlabeled fields but otherwise its actually ok I think.

Well, there are several, and I mean several, places to learn c++ as a blind
person.

One of your best resources is a site called safari.oreilly.com. However,
you will have to pay for a subscription.

There is another site, filled with all kinds of tips for blind folks wanting
to get into learning any kind of programming language, as well as containing
all kinds of documents and tutorials.

 It is at
http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com/

Good luck.

My problem is that all the books confuse me, like with Dixan.
This is a great question.
Unfortunetly, I don't know the answer, but it would be great if

Does anyone know of any good resources for learning C++ as a blind person?

Another cool site that I use, well, it isn't really a site but an online
class, is at

http://www.johnSmiley.com

His e-book is a great way to learn c++ for a beginner. The book is around
13 dollars, and you don't need to sign up for the class to read it and
purchase it.

His class costs about 250 dollars, but you get 3 CEUs when you finish, and
it does keep one on their toes. grin. I am about a third of the way through
it, and yes it is accessible.

Re: [Audyssey] learning c#

2009-08-18 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hi Scott and all,

You asked if c++ is my first language. The answer is both yes and no. grin
For the last several years, I have spent some time trying to learn visual
basic.net c sharp and c++. Each time, I would get sidetracked with work and
personal life. So, no, c++ is not my very first language. However, this is
the first time I am sticking to a language and seeing it all the way
through.

My experience has been that each author of a programming book has a
different way of describing a topic. It is like taking a class in school.
Some teachers I had I just didn't click with and try as I might, I just
couldn't understand the subject matter. When I would either retake a class
or take a similar course from another teacher, then the subject matter would
click. I have found that if you read something and it just doesn't click
the first time, keep it filed away in your mind and let your subconcious
work with it a bit. Then, find more materials that may talk about the
subject until you find the balance between subject matter and description.
It doesn't happen overnight, and believe me, you will be spending a lot of
time reading and rereading something from different sources. You may even
feel that you are making no headway, but I can say with certainty that there
will be a time when the light will flash in your mind and you will say, wow!
I get it now!

I guesss, my whole point in this ramblefest is to not stick to one way of
learning. Spend time learning in all kinds of ways from all kinds of
sources if you can.

Hi,

I just started playing on Lost Wishes Mud a week ago and I really like so
far.

It's a LP mud, wich are my favourites. It has over 100 quests, the
equipment saves when you log out and it has a great tutorial for starting
players.

The room discriptions are very good and discriptive. There are no
wilderness maps or such things and it has a special toggle for screen
readers which disables the ascii grafics in the score display, for
example.

There are 13 guilds to choose from when reaching level 10, which I didn't
reach yet, however.

I really like this mud. I'ts great for exploring, reading good room
discriptions and questing. The playerbase is quite small, there are around
30 players online in high time, but about 15 players are online at all
times.

I would recommend this muds for newbies and for veterans alike, especially
for explorers and questers. This mud is defenately not a hack and slash
thing.

I think it's worth a look for everyone who likes mudding or wants to start
doing so.

The address is:

lost.wishes.net port

Feel free to ask me for help when you see me online, my character name is
Lysandra.

Hope to see some of you online.

[Audyssey] More information about the Dust Mare Mud.

2009-05-30 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hello everyone.

I know that Shadow Dragon mentioned the dust mare mud, or mare, a few weeks
back. I also know that some of us have given it a go with various
successes.

I just wanted to quickly write and let everyone know that the admins are
working on doing everything they can for blind and VI players.

I am sort of the unofficial official admin for blind and VI players now,
whatever that means. grin.

We have been working to write more help files and intro materials for screen
reader users.

This screen reader support, along with the help system has a bit to go yet,
but I am on quite a bit when I have time, it helps to have some down time at
work, and I am more than happy to help those around who would like some
initial assistance.

The one cool thing about DustMare is that it has an RPG style storyline to
go along with your basic mud style game play.

I would strongly suggest this game for those of you who are looking for a
mud more than just your basic stock hack and slash, timed quests, and lack
of a true storyline.

The address is at winds.org port 4000.

Look for galphner, and if I am on, I would be happy to answer any questions
you may have.

To page me, just type
page galphner=your message.

Re: [Audyssey] read:apba baseball

2009-05-11 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hello.

By itself, the game, I think, comes with two old-time stadiums. The rest of
the stadiums you have to buy with stadium discs which are also listed along
with the season discs on the website. With that said, I really haven't
noticed any differences in game play if you just use a regular old stadium
full time, although they try to build stadium and weather effects into the
game. Again, this is a very old game as far as computer games go, and no
real updates have been done to it since 1998 or 1999. Granted, new season
and stadium discs are still being created, but the actual engine and core of
the game have not been updated in ages.

Regarding its accessibility with a screen reader, the menus for starting a
game or exiting, in other words, your basic menu bar is accessible without
the jaws cursor. Picking teams once you get to the teams selection dialog
are listboxes and buttons, so really you can use your pc cursor for that.

During game play you will have to use your jaws cursor for making player
changes, pitching changes, and that kind of thing.

No, that is part of the actual menu system, but there are shortcut keys you
can use during a game. I must admit, since I accidentally threw my apba cd
into the garbage while moving five years ago, I haven't played it since
then. And when I can afford it, I will get another copy unless they come out
with a new version, which I am sort of waiting for. But, I really hated
accidentally throwing the game into the trash!
grin. But Each option has a shortcut key, hit and run is the letter r, I
think, and etc.

Hello.

By itself, the game, I think, comes with two old-time stadiums. The rest
of the stadiums you have to buy with stadium discs which are also listed
along with the season discs on the website. With that said, I really
haven't noticed any differences in game play if you just use a regular
old stadium full time, although they try to build stadium and weather
effects into the game. Again, this is a very old game as far as computer
games go, and no real updates have been done to it since 1998 or 1999.
Granted, new season and stadium discs are still being created, but the
actual engine and core of the game have not been updated in ages.

Regarding its accessibility with a screen reader, the menus for starting
a game or exiting, in other words, your basic menu bar is accessible
without the jaws cursor. Picking teams once you get to the teams
selection dialog are listboxes and buttons, so really you can use your pc
cursor for that.

During game play you will have to use your jaws cursor for making player
changes, pitching changes, and that kind of thing.

Yes, I will agree with you. I think they had bigger plans back when the
prices were set all those years ago. Apba board game fans spend a lot of
money on cards and that kind of thing, so I am guessing that they were
hoping they could get the same kind of response from a computer game. I
agree, considering what the industry has done, it is a lot of money to plunk
down for a game.

2009-05-11 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hello.

You ask about an accessible manual, well, I hate to say this, because it
sounds like I am being a bit harsh, but the keys are announced by your
screen reader when you arrow through the menus. I don't know what your
experience is with screen readers, but all I can say is that listening to
what your screen reader tells you when you enter menus can give you a lot of
info. This is true not only for apba games, but for any other applications
as well. If you learn your tools, you can build a great house, as it were.

But, the manual is in a standard .hlp file when you install the game.

Re: [Audyssey] Other baseball computer games.

2009-05-09 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hello. I would strongly advise looking at that website I gave you for more
details than I can give you in a quick mailing.
I will answer your questions on list, just in case others are also
wondering.

There is no career mode so-to-speak, meaning that you can not play more than
one season and have them accumulate for years. However, they have what are
called season discs and again, I suggest going to the website to see which
season discs and team discs are available. It also has a schedule maker
for playing things like regular seasons and world serieses, playoffs, etc.

There is no trial period for the game, since it runs off of the cd-rom, due
to all the sound files for commentary. But I assure you, it is accessible
as far as menus and that are concerned. I warn you that during the game you
will have to use the jaws or window-eyes or Hal cursors to do things like
put in relief pitchers and change player positions, but again, it is all
right there on the screen.

You can indeed edit rosters, player names, and team names.

And, in case you lost the info, the website is at
http://www.apbagames.com/stadium/games/software/baseball/bbw/bbw55.html

Hi.

The Apba game is strictly a baseball season and team management game.
However, you can make decisions about when to take a pitch, swing away,
bunt, hit and run, and other baseball decisions.

[Audyssey] Thanks for Dust Mare COmmands, here is another quick question.

2009-05-09 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hey there.

I am writing this question to the list since I know there are a few of us on
this DustMare mud now. So rather than just posing this to the admin of the
mud, I figured I would put this question here so everyone who may wonder can
get the question answered.

This regards the +channel command. Now, for those of you with the
punctuation turned off in your screen reader the command is plus channel,
that is the word channel with the plus sign in front. Anyway, last night,
the public channel was driving me nuts, so I disabled it with a
+channel -public command. That is, +channel with a dash in front of the
word public. I didn't see any documentation regarding how to enable and
disable channels, so I am just guessing from my experience of muds past.
grin.

When I checked my channel list, I was indeed off of the public channel.
I did find the public channel somewhat helpful at times yesterday, so I
would like to enable it and disable it at will.

No matter what I do, I can not reenable the public channel. I have tryed
+channel +public, the plus sign with the word public, also putting the plus
sign at the end of public, and all I do is succeed in creating my own
channels called plus public and public plus! Lol.

At any rate, if anyone who plays on this mud has the answer to this one,
that's cool, if not, I will take it to the admin.

Hmm, maybe some of us blind DustMare players can help the admin write some
updated documentation?

Here's a few commands new players might find useful:

+hint: Tells you exactly where you are in the storyline, and usually what
to do next. It's a little buggy in the later storyline, but it works.
Items: Shows you a detailed list of your inventory, usually telling you
what an item is used for. You can also type items itemname to get detailed
info on that item spacifically, how much it weighs, its value, etc.
can carry lb or kg: This tells you how much more weight you can carry in
either pounds or kilograms.
+help: Shows you the game help itself. If you just type help without the
plus side, you get the basic mush help. The in game help isn't a lot
better, but lists some fairly useful commands.

This regards the +channel command. Now, for those of you with the
punctuation turned off in your screen reader the command is plus channel,
that is the word channel with the plus sign in front. Anyway, last
night,

the public channel was driving me nuts, so I disabled it with a
+channel -public command.

+channel +public, the plus sign with the word public, also putting the
plus sign at the end of public, and all I do is succeed in creating my
own

channels called plus public and public plus! Lol.

At any rate, if anyone who plays on this mud has the answer to this one,
that's cool, if not, I will take it to the admin.

Hmm, maybe some of us blind DustMare players can help the admin write
some

updated documentation?

Here's a few commands new players might find useful:

+hint: Tells you exactly where you are in the storyline, and usually
what

to do next. It's a little buggy in the later storyline, but it works.
Items: Shows you a detailed list of your inventory, usually telling you
what an item is used for. You can also type items itemname to get
detailed info on that item spacifically, how much it weighs, its value,
etc.
can carry lb or kg: This tells you how much more weight you can carry in
either pounds or kilograms.
+help: Shows you the game help itself. If you just type help without the
plus side, you get the basic mush help. The in game help isn't a lot
better, but lists some fairly useful commands.

Turns out there's a problem with the public channel and not allowing you
to rejoin for some reason. The admin are probably looking into it. Every
other channel works fine though for joining, and its just +ch channel
name, with no plus sign. Hopefully public gets fixed soon so you can
toggle it at will.

Hi.

The Apba game is strictly a baseball season and team management game.
However, you can make decisions about when to take a pitch, swing away,

Hello.

Besides the stratomatic baseball game, there is an older game called Apba
Broadcast Blast, put out by Apba. They still sell it at
http://www.apbastadium.com and the game is called baseball for windows.
They are apparently making a new version, but no new announcements have been
coming out for the last two years or so.

The cool thing about this game is that it is completely voiced by Ernie
Harwell, including all names. What they do is have a database of several
thousand names on the cd-rom, and even if a team or player is represented by
one letter due to copyrights etc, the names are still in the database, and
you can rename the players or teams as needed. As you may guess, do to
all the files, the game must be run from the cd-rom each time, but it is
very quick in spite of that. . Lol.

In other news, there may be some baseball games and other sports games
coming sometime in the very very distant future. If a certain someone with
the initials of J H learns programming enough to do so. But right now, this
J H person is quietly learning all he needs to in order to make something of
high quality, and will say no more at this time. grin

It would take quite a while to do a Windows version as it can not be

It would have to be voiced with SAPI as it contains hundreds of player's

Right now there is a commercial version of a similar game called
Strat-O-Matic baseball simulator,
but I think it costs about $70.

For those who don't know, Harry developed WSBB over a 15 year period
starting as a GW basic program and increased in complexity each year.

I mainly use arcade mode when I am trying to figure out how to play Mota.
But recently, I have just been playing first person mode, now that I have a

Hello Listers,
I have a real quick question for some of you Mysteries of the Ancients
fans. Over the passed few days/weeks I have been involved in performing a
major upgrade of Mysteries of the Ancients. As the work I am doing is
largely experimental I don't want to say too much about the work as yet.
Although, I think if it pans out it will be a big step forward with the
game, and possably will resolve several issues with the game.
That said, here is the deal. I've been porting MOTA over to a newer
version of the Genesis Engine, and so far so good. Thing is since Genesis
is primarily for First Person style games I never put an arcade mode in
the main Genesis Engine. It was strictly an addition to the modified
engine for Mysteries of the Ancients. Obviously I can add an arcade mode
to the Genesis Engine, make it a standard feature, but I'm not sure if
that is necessary. So I am going to ask this question. When playing
Mysteries of the Ancients do you prefer arcade mode or standard mode when
playing?

Thanks.

Hi folks,

I just wanted to let everyone know that my favorite BBS, surprisingly, is
still up and running. The games there, and there are close to ten
different L.O.R.D. games, are set to adult mode, though.

Anyway, if anyone wants to check it out, telnet to:

telnet://www.acad.dynip.com

The port is the standard Telnet port of 23.

I can't believe that BBS is still running. I played on it probably six
years ago. Of course, the players there aren't nearly as numerous as they
used to be, but it's still fun. The thing that makes the games there so
much more interesting is that there are about 33 IGMs, which I think
stands for something like In Game Modules, that add all kinds of extras to
the game.

Just wanted to pass that along.

Re: [Audyssey] Can't connect to the Hary Potter mud

2009-04-12 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hey there.

Well, you could be having some kind of firewall issue, but let's try
something first.

Try this.

Instead of trying to connect to the domain name: try connecting to the ip
address instead. I found out what it was by pinging the domain.

If you don't want to mess with VIPMud just yet, until you know you can
connect you can go to your start menu, select run and then type the
following:

telnet 174.133.72.235
and press enter.

I just did this little experiment before writing this message, and it
worked.

I'm sure it some kind of simple little deal, but let's take things one step
at a time. grin

Re: [Audyssey] Can't connect to the Hary Potter mud

2009-04-11 Thread Jeremy Hartley
I was just able to connect using VIPMud. Maybe they were just down for
reboot or cleanup.

I know this goes without saying, but I have seen a few people make this
mistake before, so I will mention it just in case. grin

Remember to put the port, which in this case is in the port box, which
can be gotten to in VIPMud, by tabbing once after the host field. Like I
said, I know this sounds simple enough, but too often I have seen people put
the host and port in the host field. grin
I don't know your mud client experience at all, so please don't think I am
putting you down by mentioning this. grin

At any rate, hope you are able to connect.

Hi folks,

Okay, I'm trying out Monkeyterm, and VIP Mud, and aside from quite a few
Microsoft VB errors that keeps popping up in Monkeyterm, it seems to work
fine. But, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or not. I can't
connect to the Harry Potter mud at:

hpwizwars.mudmagic.com port

It always says connection timed out.

Any advice? I am able to connect to other muds.

Thanks.

~Ann
PS! I think I just broke a record. I've never posted three messages on

Re: [Audyssey] [Spam] Re: Where to download mota version 4

2009-04-03 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Dark,

This has nothing to do with me being upset. If you read down in my e-mail,
and I know you did, I said that his joke was cool, but I do know that
people put e-mails aside for later.

I don't understand how you thought I was getting upset. I was just stating
something that was true, the fact that Thomas was saying that his next beta
would be released in a few days, and that was at the end of March, and if
you think about it, if a developer says that, then you will look for
something in the next few days.

And, let's face it, some folks don't like being told that they were
gotten, if they were just putting things off to the side until they were
ready to download the beta.

You, being the moderator of audio games should understand that. We don't
know when someone will be put off from downloading a game. I am just trying
to include everyone, which I would think you as moderator of audio-games.net
forum would want to do the same.

I usually don't respond to messages such as this one, but in defense of
the author, not that he needs any, I will respond.

First of all, Thomas Ward did say a couple of days ago that he would
release beta four in a quote day or two unquote. Now, I do realized
that his beta four message was an april fools joke and I thought it was
cool, , but I would ask that we all think of something a little
differently.

Many of us, myself included have day jobs. What this means is that a lot
of times we look at subject lines and then file them away for later when
we have the time to look at the messages.

If one was to just file away the message that beta four was released, and
if they had read that Thomas was going to release beta four in a day or
two, then they may have just seen that message and automatically gone to
the website, thinking that they could grab the beta. Not everyone has
the time to read all the e-mails on a list, especially when the
developer of a game posted before the april first date what beta four
would be about, and when things come from developers, especially talking
about a beta release, there are those folks who just see the subject and
say, hey, cool, when I have the time, I will download the next beta from
the website, since I know where to download the game. Why should I read
the e-mail, if I know where the beta can be downloaded.

Now, I will say here that before I went to the website, I did read the
e-mail, and I knew it was an april fools joke. But since Thomas, already
posted at the end ofMarch what the next beta would be, I may have not
read the e-mail, and gone straight to the website.

So before you make a statement like this below, maybe you should think
about how people process the e-mails they receive.

[Audyssey] Guess I got up on the wrong side of the E-mail Yesterday. Was Re: Where to download mota version 4

2009-04-03 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hi folks.

Since I sort of opened this can of worms, I will do my best to close it back
up again, without making this a long drawn out message that is hard to write
and even harder to read. grin

First off, I love April Fool pranks, and I did get a kick out of this one

Basically, I just snapped yesterday. It is funny what tiny little thing can
set a person off at times.

I work with a lot of newly blinded folks, teaching them how to use computers
and that kind of thing. It just so happened yesterday, I had two clients
that were like scared little rabbits when it comes to the computer. In such
cases, every little step they can make to use a computer is a wonderful
thing.

When I saw the post asking where to download Mota Beta four, it was clearly
obvious that the individual did not read the e-mail, and went straight to
the web site. Like Charles says, one should read all e-mails when a new
game or beta comes out. This is true and does make sense. However, Thomas
did post a message several days back, discussing the new features in beta
four,, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility that someone may have
just gone to the website rather than rereading something that was already
posted a few days back.

When I read that e-mail, a thought occurred to me. What if the person
asking the question was like these two clients. They saw a message, went to
the web site, looked for the game, couldn't find it, and posted what they
thought was a legitimate question? And what if reading a message, no matter
how much in fun it was, saying wow they sure fell for the joke didn't they,
was enough to make a beginner turn away thinking that people thought them
incompetent? Yeah yeah, I know, that sounds silly, and blown way out of
proportion. grin But, in my line of work, I have seen it happen before.

Like I said though, I know I blew things out of proportion, and I chock it
up to having one of those work days that just drive you nuts. I should have
never even posted, but since I did, I can't undo the situation. grin

All I can do is try and dig myself out of this hole and apologize. Sheepish
grin.

Ok, snap and message over. grin

Game on!

Re: [Audyssey] Configuring Eamon Deluxe.

2008-11-16 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hello.

Well, I did manage to get aemon for windows to run, and I am having very
little issue with it.
However, I am aware of the bogging down problems you and others are having.
I too had similar problems with other programs that run in a dos window.
Ever since I got this new machine about a year ago, a duel core 3.0ghz
processor and 2 gb of ram,

I haven't had those slow down issues at all.

Now, I know some of you may be saying that you have similar spec machines,
and perhaps that isn't the issue? I'm not sure. All I know is that when I
bought this machine from sonica labbs, they really turned off a lot of
background processes, since this is a machine designed for audio production.

I write all this mainly to let people know that the program does run, at
least if you are running jaws, I have had issue with it with window-eyes 7
thus far, but I don't know if the slow down is from the computer specs or
some background process running that causes things to not work with
dos-based programs. Just something to chew on.

Re: [Audyssey] The Great Escape Version 1.01

2008-04-22 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hey there Folks,

Just to add my two sense into this thread.

Yes, Louis did a great job recreating a game that, if memory serves, was
originally on the Apple II computers in 1984 or so. If I remember
correctly, the original great escape was written by Delton T. Horn for a
book about how to write apple games.

I am so glad that Louis has made a port of this game that isn't sluggish
like the other DOS port.
OF course, when the other DOS port came out, I don't think Windows XP was
even out yet, and of course, we all know about trying to play certain dos
games under XP. grin

At any rate, Louis, you brought back a lot of memories for me, I spent hours
on end playing this game 20 years ago on an old Apple II GS computer with
the echo pc synthesizer.
. grin Great job.

 Hi louis.

I was actually writing up a news post about the game release for
audiogames.net when your E-mail turned up, so I had to go and eddit things
 unexpectedly, ---lol!

Well, I like the game, I deffinately want to see what happens
if you meet the lepricorn, and what you actually do with that gold.

I didn't think the villain was too scary, in fact he caught me and
chucked me down a secret passage which ended up with me one room before
 the
 exit.

My only miner cryticism of the game is that the voice was a litle
 slow, ---
but I can always alter the speed in the control panel.

I'll be interested to see what else is in the maze. Perhaps at some point
you could considder adding music or sound effects for a bbit more
atmosphere? Though i'm guessing sinse you port things to devices which
 don't
have quite as good sound file support as windows that this wouldn't be a
 high priority for you.

thanks for the game, I'll look forward to playing any others you come up
 with.

read by SAPI. Edit boxes are no longer extensively used, however focus is
given to one edit box in particular at the beginning of the game, and
after a dialog box disappears. This allows you to type in other
 responses.
Please let me know what you think and what could be better. Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] live gaming

2008-03-30 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Liam, This is great! Looks like I will need to save up for a play station
now. grin
I guess it is a good thing that work is picking up. grin

About 15 years ago, I used to play the old sportstalk baseball and football
games on the Sega genesis system, and I thought they were incredibly
advanced games as far as commentary for its time. . But this mlb the show
sounds like the kind of game I have always wanted to play.
Isn't it funny, no matter how old one gets, they still have a soft spot in
their hearts for a video game they have always wanted to see made, and it
looks like this mlb the show has really hit a home run. grin

 Hi guys:

I think there's a lot of baseball fans on list. I could be mistaken.
Today I've decided to spend a few hours play mlb the show 08 which is the
latest installment of the series. I'm streaming it live at
 http://listen.liamerven.com
 along with my commentary.
I'm playing full nine inning exhibition games.
feel free to listen if you are bored.
I'll probably be streaming for most of the day as this week I'm heading
out for a few weeks and won't have the luxury of a playstation.

Re: [Audyssey] Any suggestions for the savage gamut?

2008-02-19 Thread Jeremy Hartley
When I first played the game several years ago, my first thought was, wow,
how will I learn this punch counter punch thing? grin

But I took some time to work on one punch counterpunch sequence over and
over again until I was able to commit it to memory. Then I went to the next
sequence. Yeah it took a long time, but it wasn't that difficult after some
work.

I too would like the ability to duck and dodge punches and put together
combinations of punches like in real boxing.

 Hi,
On the contrary, once I handled the interface, which took about a half
hour, the game became almost to easy. I was able to beat all 9 boxers
of the first game on the same day it was released. If the interface is
made easier, the game will become simplified to the point where it
 won't be worth playing.

I agree it was quite hard and I never got the hang of it. I would prefer
 a

Not for me it didn't, and I read the thing. I just thought the

I actually disagree there Bryan, getting to grips with the interface
 was
 the
only challenge I found in the game. the manual explained the key
 combos
 for
punches and counter punches fairly well, and once you'd learnt these
 the
 game became easy.

 Hi all,

Well, it seems I've found that game that Dark calls An RPG. This
game has a storyline so complex that, after I finish the tutorial, I
don't know where to sart. It operates like a gamebook.

I haven't gotten into the story elements of the game questing etc,
but it sure does look like a pretty big world. What's more, there's a
soundtrack. Why it plays out of the left channel only for me, I don't
know, but as you explore new tracks apparently get unlocked.

 Go and register at: http://www.azoundria.com

 Enjoy.

Re: [Audyssey] speak and spell and speak and math.

2007-12-31 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hello.

Funny enough, about three years ago, I created a computer version of the
classic speak n math, including capturing all the classic sounds from an
actual speakNMath. Unfortunately, I was just learning C Sharp language, and
I got as far as creating a few levels of solve it, and number stumper, but
it was sort of working. grin I completely forgot about the project! grin I
still have all the sounds and I think I still have the c sharp code, as
sloppy is it is, hanging around here somewhere. grin

But to really answer your question, I seem to remember a speakN Spell
emulation program somewhere on the net. Try googling speak and spell
emulation.

Re: [Audyssey] Sryth: frost demon adventure

2007-12-26 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hello,

I was able to finally defeat the frost demon, but here is what I had to do.
My MR is at 91, and my stamina is at 119. I really never used magic on the
frost demon, deciding instead to use any magic points I had on restoration
of myself, because one of my magic powers is restoration.. I also healed
myself once with the quickstone, and used up all my blessings. I think My
fight with the demon lasted about 150 or so rounds of combat.

 Hi list,
I am just wondering if it is just me, but is there a way to defeat the
frost demon. I don't seem to be doing much damage at all. I am currently
at 64 MR, 84 SP, and 16 NV. My skill level in weaponry and weaponry
slashing is 61. At first, I was able to use my magic on it, but now it
resist every time. Do you need to keep fleeing for a longtime before you
can even put a nice dent in the thing? smile Maybe I need to raise My Mr
 or weaponry skill level.
Where's a nice camp fire when you need it? smile

Re: [Audyssey] That is not what I wanted

2007-11-15 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Well let's see. I remember there was an audio trainer for the savage gambit
boxing game, which allowed you to practice punches.

I am wondering if you aren't mixing up the word trainer with trailer, as in
audio game trailer, such as the race way trailer released. If so, then a
trailer is like a commercial, or sneak peak at things to come.

If you didn't mean any of those things, then I am completely lost.

Up for a little challenge guys? I just came up with the best one. See how
long you last in super Liam without shooting a thing! This means your
 lazar
gun cannot be used at all in the game to shoot enemies. you can shoot the
wall if you so wish grin. Also you must upload a file for proof. Here's
 mine.

[Audyssey] Sarah from Pcs Games latest title, is interviewed!

2007-08-08 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hello folks.

Ok, I realize that this list is about gaming, and the below post is really
about a podcast for blind musicians, but the subject this week is Sarah, the
voice of Pcs Games' Sarah and the Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please
see below.

Well, it has been about 9 months, but the Whole Note Podcast for blind
musicians and audio professionals is back!
All the details are below, but now for the news!

The new show is an interview I did with vocalist and musician Sarah Alawami.
We listen to some unreleased cuts from her upcoming Christmas album, and talk
about life, music, and all kinds of things.
We also get into her involvement in several audio games such as Sarah and the
Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Ok, now for all the details.
The website is at
http://www.WholeNotePodcast.com
For those of you that have podcatching software and would like to add the feed,
the direct address for the feed is at

More shows are coming!

Re: [Audyssey] off topic but urgent

2007-08-04 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hello.

It has been a long time since I have done this, but here are the steps I
believe you need to take. What I did before was to save the attachment
first. I used outlook express, so I opened the message that contains the
attachment and selected save attachments from the file menu. I am not sure
what e-mail client you are using. Anyway, if you get the attachment saved
to disc, you can navigate to it in windows explorer. Then right click or
press the applications key while on the file. Go to properties. You may
need to use your screen reader's cursoring keys to find the unblock button.
Again, I know it was in the properties, but you may need to go through the
various tabbs in properties before you find it. I wish I had a blocked file
to test this on, but hopefully this will get you pointed in the right
direction.

 Hi all,
Does anybody know if it's possible to open file attachments that have
been blocked? Thomas sent me a zip of some SFX for my fFrogs and Flies
game but Windows XP won't let me open them. I get this security warning
about how windows blocks certain files that could be harmful to the
computer. It doesn't even tell me if there's a way to open it. This zip
has some rather important files for my game, so any help would be
 appreciated.

Re: [Audyssey] Sryth.

2006-07-27 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hello.

I have just finished the third part of the Sryth giants story, and now have
finished all the various quests in the game.

My thoughts on Sryth are as follows:

In my opinion, if you want to start with magical powers, especially more
than one in the beginning, you should consider joining the Adventurers
guild. When you join the AG you can pick from a list of generated
characters with various skills and powers. Also the adventurers guild adds
some incredible content to the game, and the creater keeps adding fresh
content.

In terms of magical powers being helpful, for me, they didn't start being
very helpful until my level of mastery was about 35 or 40 in a given power.

Another trick I have found is to not equip yourself with your weapon until
you get ready to click the begin combat button. The monsters seem to
power up based on your melee rating, and since weapons increase the MR I
have found it helpful not to equip myself with a weapon until the monster
has already been created.

 Hi all.

Someone gave a link to this game yesterday and I signed up for it and
really like it so far. I was just wondering, how would go about getting
magical powers to use? I didn't see an option for that when I set up my
character. I was kind of wondering if joining the adventurer's guild is
worth the money too ... if anyone's done that and can give what the
difference is between that and regular playing I wouldn't mind knowing
about it. If this is off topic anyone can write me off list. My e-mail
 address is

 Thanks all.

[Audyssey] One more thought about Magical powers, Was: Re: Sryth.

2006-07-27 Thread Jeremy Hartley
I almost forgot to say this about magical powers. Throughout the game,
there are some adventures that will give your character a magical power
after you have completed the quest. Since I am an AG member, I don't know
if these adventures are only for AG members.

Re: [Audyssey] query bout pbx wildwest

2006-06-14 Thread Jeremy Hartley
Hi Charles,

Thanks for that, however, I was answering Liam's question about why he was
losing a ball after pressing the spacebar to block the center punch. That
was why I said that one needs to press space again in order to throw a
center punch so one doesn't lose a ball. I probably should have been more
clear that I was answering the question. That's what I get for rushing!
grin

The game works like ESP WhoopAss. You block a punch by pressing the key
associated with the punch that was thrown at you, then throw your own
 punch
which must be different than the one you blocked.
