Re: [Audyssey] For all FSX private GA flight pilots.
We really need to hunker down and get MultiCrew Experience to have audio-landing support because: 1. IYP capabilities: Robert will no longer be implementing capabilities and features into Its your Plane. 2. Most important of all: if this plane is made, we don't know if IYP will implement support. He may, but MCE is more likely to implement it than Robert and IYP, quicker. I'm championing MCE because it's still being updated, I like it's design, they've already implemented partial blind support... we just need to convince them to implement an auto-landing feature. Either that, or as a friend said, we need a way to read FMC data to get the necessary information to land properly manually. While I like IYP, new planes that are coming out won't be supported, so I'm not very excited at the prospect of flying a new plane as Robert is only "maintaining" IYP. I fully understand his reasons for this, but when I see threads like this about new planes, awesome that it may be made, but good luck trying to convince Robert to add support for all these aircraft. I'd love to fly a lot of the A2A aircraft, such as the A2A Cesna172. However, this aircraft is not supported by IYP. While we can fly non-supported aircraft, IYP can't land them if it's not supported. That's a double-edged sword. [Audyssey] World 1, Map 5 of Inquisitors Heartbeat Help
Hi all, The objective is to find a hidden passage on this map. I try to follow every passage until it leads me to two gates, doors whatever those swinging sounds are. Both seem to be dead end rooms and I can’t seem to proceed. There seems to be two locked doors that need a key, or is that not the sound for key, I don’t know. So yeah, how do I proceed with this particular area? The other four I was able to find without much issue, not sure what’s so different about this one. In one of the rooms I seem to trip over some object, but I don’t know if I could interact with it, probably just to make it interesting. Thanks. It's not that I want the credit, but because everybody has *got* to get this one game. It's called Formula 1 spirit, by Karotky Media Solutions. Just type audiogames with no spaces in the app store, and it's number two on the list. It's two bucks. Yep, for two dollars you can race with the big boys on all the formula 1 tracks. Be the driver with the best time... I wasn't going to tell you about this game. i was going to drop little hints, like on my first post... because there was a contest. The winner of the game got a free iPad. I put this in past tense because this game is two years old! That's right people, while the blind community has been drooling and yearning over the posibility of an audio racing game, one has existed the whole time! Now do you see why I behave as i do? I talk about being the game hunter not to brag, but to... make more game hunters! It can be done! I don't submit apps because I want you all to learn to look for them yourselves. We have gotten too dependent on the Applevis app submissions. I'm glad we have them, but meantime we could have had this racing game if there were only a few more game hunters like me around. (Yes, I know I'm not the only one, but we are very few in number.) Anyway, this game is well-worth the price, even if there are no other cars and you can't crash. Here's what you get. A game with force feedback--it vibrates when you're off the road. One point. True driving mechanics. Your car doesn't simply slide sideways like in every racing game for the blind I've ever seen, you have to compensate for turns you make, just like in real driving. For example, if you turn too far to the right and then turn the wheel straight, you're still aimed too far to the right. you have to straighten out by turning left--but not too far, then straight ahead. 1 point. All the formula 1 tracks represented--I think. I've only played through 3 so far. 1 point. Okay, now that your blood's pumping, I have to tell you that the beginning is inaccessible. Now don't worry, I'll tell you what to do. First, tap the screen about a third of the way down from the top with VO off. Then turn it on, and you should see the name of a race track. It's the top button, so learning exactly where it is shouldn't prove too hard now that you know what you're after. Okay, now that you've found this screen, you can either play that track or scrool either left or right with the scroll buttons. These are labeled in a weird language, but they say scroll, then the weird direction names. These buttons change the tracks. Next to that is an unlabeled button. Tap it to get to the lap setting screen. There are two new buttons labeled LC left, which decreases the number of laps, and LCRight which increases the number. You can set it quite high, at lease 16. Once all that's done, turn off VO and tap near the bottom of the screen. You'll know you got it right because the engine noise will start. Then, go to landscape mode and tap the center of the screen. You should hear five beeps, then you're off. The gas pedal is on the right side of the screen. Your phone has just become your steering wheel! Okay, now you're cookin' with gas. Re: [Audyssey] You Don't Know Jack for iOS
Hello, The version that Brandon reviewed was the one from last year without Facebook integration. Here's the lowdown on this version. After the Facebook login, hold your phone in landscape by putting the home button on the right, as VoiceOver says with hints turned on. Now, press the bottom right corner to press the play or start, I don't know what it is. Then press the top right to start the episode. Episodes played this way seem to go from newest to oldest. Also, here are the answer layouts. Answer one is on the top left, but not at the very top, it's about halfway down. Answer two is the same way, except it's on the right. Answers three and four are on the top left and bottom right respectively. The Diss or Dat questions: The first answer category is at the top left but again not the very top, and the second one is on the bottom right. The other questions that we have issues with aren't accessible, the jibborish questions, which I don't think uses the iOS keyboard. Also the Jack attack, which has always been inaccessible though Jellyvision are now aware of this. These apps use something called scale form, something that I know little about, but I asked about their next game, Lie Swatter, and they said that while it doesn't have a host, it uses scaleform and doesn't work with VoiceOver and they'll try their best. I guess they are also trying to make this workaround for YDKJ as well. I hope this helps everyone who tried to play before. Hi. As people will know, my Iphone is turning up this afternoon. I think I know what I am doing with setup and such, but I would be interested in people's recommendations for games. the thing that taught me most about using supernova particularly on the net, was actually playing games like Legend of the green dragon and ashes of angels. i suspect vo is the same, and I do know there is a learning curve, however to make learning a little more pleasant and give me some incentive, are there games people could recommend with a fairly simple interface? king of dragon pass looks amazing, and I really look forward to trying it, however the fact that it seems to take a little bit of wangling to play probably doesn't make it ideal as a first game for vo practice. how about silver sword? how about gamebooks? is the lost cities card game relatively straight forward in terms of controls? I know there is a training area, but as I've found in the past nothing is better for learning than just rolling up my sleeves and doing, and nothing is more fun to do on a computer than play games! so, I'd very much appreciate people's suggestions and thoughts here. This is again what is frustrating, sinse though there are lots of text based scifi empire building mmorpgs, scifi trading morpgs, or scifi spaceship flying mmorpgs, all of them are basically focused on roleplay, raising stats and beating the other player, not on what is for me the most interesting thing about a scifi setting, seaking out new worlds, exploring new life and new civilizations etc. The only exception is core exiles, but even there the exploration system isn't as major a part of the game as I would like, and also much of the focus of the game is on economics, production and advancement, though exploration sis a little more of a mainstream activity than the sideline affair it used to be. Still, I'd love to see a game where full ship flying and exploration of the area around you was the main focus, just the way that in alter there are massive mazelike zones with interesting things to find in them and the explorer points system even rewards you for doing so. [Audyssey] Dentin's apparent space game?
Hi Dentin and all, Just curious if what I heard on Twitter was true? Dentin is making a space game with limited PVP with more focus on exploration and activities/questing? Curious as to when that's going into beta so we can start messing around on it, as Dentin I believe can admin a game better than the two current space themed muds that are available now. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Ouya: a new, Android-based open platform gaming console.
Well, I think the problem would be the Droid screen reader itself, Talkback. If we want screen reader support I think it'll be hard to convince Google to add more functionality. If Google did add more stuff, Android would be more accessible than it already is. If Droid was more accessible and or usable I'd get a Droid phone. Hi Yohandy, As a developer I definitely think the Ouya project has promise. They have decided to build their technology on an open source platform, based it on open source standards, and opened the platform up to independent developers. This is good because the indi developers have been locked out of the console market for far too long simply because the big boys like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have absolute control of what gets developed and published for their respective consoles not to mention require expensive licenses to develop for their platforms. Apple's iOS devices are more open to indi developers, but even there it goes through a board who approves or rejects the app based on quality and standardization. It looks like Ouya will allow an old hacker like myself to code whatever I want and run it on the console without all that hassle. Re: [Audyssey] a good looking site.
Hey all, Well, Lisa may have a point here. I'm trying to find more info on this, but http://www.vlfgames.com is a site that is trying to promote accessibility in games for everyone. In one of the posts up there, Daniel mentions that he partnered with Big Fish. Whether this partnership resulted in anything remains to be scene. I'd love to play some of these games I found here. I'm just not sure it's possible. Some are point and click, but those interfaces are problimatic at best. However, a little more information is necessary, sinse simply saying this is a good site for games could've bene information you got from google, and makes no guarantee of access. There are very many game related sites around the internet, providing graphical games, which is why access has to be a considderation, and it is true that when looking at bigfish games they seem very much to be one of those large distributors of graphical games similar to 300Ad, game hippo or alawar, none of which provide any accessible games at all, indeed I've checked out several sites like that myself in the past, and found a very low proportion of accessible games at all. Thus, some idea of what games you might have tried from the site, and what you found accessible would be much appreciated, particularly sinse often those sorts of sites are distributors rather than main line developers, meaning that perhaps one company's games were! accessible, and just being sold through bigfish, but other companies with inaccessible games weren't, (I had a recent experience with a low vision accessible game from 300Ad which very much fell into this catagory, sinse while the games in that particular series by that particular dev were accessible to low vision play, many others that 300Ad sold weren't). If you could therefore perhaps let us know about some games you've tried on the site, and their accessibility that would be much appreciated, not the least because if only some! games are accessible, it'll stop most other people having to waid through a hoard of inaccessible ones. [Audyssey] Swamp: Zombie Growls?
Hi all, I believe when I played in 2.3, Zombies when coming toward you would growl as they came. Why has this been removed? I was in the gas station parking lot and heard them or at least one, so I centered the footsteps as best as I could and fired. I missed so it ran faster and i couldn't tel whether it was running away or toward me, plus other player footsteps were in the background. I wonder if it's my headphones and e not being able to center things, my mouse cencitivity or maybe there's a delay with Vmware Fusion though I doubt that because there are good Swamp players using virtual machines. BTW, Aprone, is there a way you could implement the NVDA API DLL so that Swamp could support System access/SA or SA to GO? Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] Swamp fan-fiction competition.
Swamp should, I believe, have some point have a single player campaign mode where we can actually play through a story like most FPS's have now. Participants are asked to write up a short story, diary, or piece of writing that lets us follow your character and get a feel of what life is like for them. You can use your own character or make up some new person just for the sake of your writing. Participants will have 2 weeks to complete their stories and at the end I’ll put them all together for people to vote on. The prize will be having a building named after you in Swamp! There is no minimum or maximum length requirement for the stories but I do recommend that people take the time to spell check their work. This just makes it more professional for everyone to read. The stories can be emailed to me, posted online, or even posted here somewhere, but I must be given the link to the story before the end of the day on April 22nd. If you wish to post it publicly to get feedback and ideas from other people that is totally fine. When the deadline is reached I will make a copy of each story and place it on my own website so that it can no longer be changed. You can continue to modify or work on your story but people will be asked to vote on the unchanging copy that I will have on my site. Instead of being asked to vote for only 1 story, voters will be allowed to give a score for each story that is turned in. Voters will have 1 week to read the stories, and I will announce the winner at the end. To write your stories, authors might find that they need a bit more back story than the game currently provides. The zombie condition is viral and is transmits through bites. Because the origins of the virus have not been revealed in the game, I strongly recommend that you don’t write about the outbreak’s beginning or trying to write an explanation about how it all started. While not specifically stated in the game, the assumption is that people being killed later rise as new zombies. The various zombie types are the result of time passing. It hasn’t been explained in the game yet, so I discourage people from going too much in to this either, but as time passes the virus mutates and changes the zombie corpses. The normal zombies represent people who have only recently risen as zombies, and ones like the giant and tyrant have been zombies for much longer. Before writing you should check the story in both safe zones and also check both outposts. This will ensure that you have the most up to date idea of the current game story. Often time rumors that show up in the forums don’t actually match the story as written in the game. For example I’ve heard many people who think the zombie infection broke out here in your town but the in game story explains that the major cities were hit first and caused millions of people to die. When the zombies couldn’t find anyone else to eat in the overrun cities, huge swarms branched out in all directions and began sweeping through the suburbs, country side, and smaller towns. Your town was one of the places in the path of this undead wave. I think telling your story as a log from your person’s perspective would be pretty cool. Of course it could be told from a narrator’s perspective or any other way you think would be interesting. You actually have several choices about how your character fits in to the situation. The town knew the undead were coming and the army tried to set up blockades to hold them back. The second map’s safe zone is actually a failed military barricade. Check the in-game story for more details, but the army failed and the lines broke. Most soldiers died but others scattered around the town among the survivors. You could be a surviving soldier, one of the town’s police officers, or a regular citizen who armed himself. I think the stories will be more special if everyone isn’t the most heroic soldier in the army. Sometimes you care more when you’re living out the experiences of the bowling alley employee who armed himself and has worked to keep his 2 kids and wife alive. The zombie struggle is certainly the most obvious theme, but thirst, starvation, cold, and human interaction can play huge roles. If you’ve paid attention to the mission descriptions you may have figured out that the people in the safe zone are at the verge of starvation. These are desperate people trying to survive with very little. When the zombies were coming the stores were looted and many people tried to flee the town, so even when men and women risk the undead to search
[Audyssey] Help with running Swamp using Vmware Fusion
Hi all, Okay, so I have one of the weirdest problems with Swamp. Basically I can set my name and stuff, with a bit of haggling because the name edit box seems to lose focus especially when using System Access. Using jaws seems to be fine but using sapi it also loses focus. Anyway, the sad thing about this is that when I connect, Sapi or whatever screen reader I have it set to does not say what it's suposed to say, the donation sponsor for today. The way to make it speak is by alt-tabing away from the window and it will speak. Also when I am in the swamp window I hear the chat message sound of them coming in, but I can't hear Sapi speak them. Again, moving away from the Swamp window will speak them as they come in. Sounds won't play though. The only time when the ambience seem to play is when, for example, I fittle with the game to get into the main menu and go to try and change something like my name. That's when things like the safe zone guard messages will play and I hear things like radar. Even when exiting the game, when clicking exit game it doesn't even exit, again I move away and the window disappears. Another thing that is happening is in the main menu, most menu items speak but the one that isn't is the voice. I hear the voice file, but Sapi doesn't say something like Voice set to Matt or whatever. I know people on a Mac using Vmware Fusion just fine and they don't have these issues. 1.8B worked just fine here. Not sure if I happened to do something; anyone have any suggestions? You know, does Apple only let you code games in Objective C? That's kind of a slap in the face to people who prefer other languages such as Python. As many of you might remember I've been working on a turn based wrestling game similar to the old Piledriver game for Dos accept my version uses a more up to date database of superstars from the WWE, including both male and female performers, as well as some sounds and music. Plus it is cross-platform and runs on both Windows and Linux operating systems. Which brings me to my question. As I am currently working on adding entrance theme music etc to the game right now it is sometimes hard to decide on which entrance theme music to use as the performers tend to frequently change their entrance music on a regular basis. In most cases I'll simply use the most current music if that particular performer is still signed to the WWE. The problem is that there are a number of performers who have quit the WWE and have signed with another promotion like TNA or Ring of Honor. For example, Mickie James was one of the most popular divas during her run in the WWE and during her Diva's title reign. However, in 2010 she quit the WWE and has been wrestling for TNA for the last couple of years. I have something of a choice to make in a case like that. Should I use the most current entrance music from the WWE, or should I grab the entrance music from TNA to essentially bring the entrance music completely up to date? Which brings up another but interesting question. If you think I should use the TNA entrance music should I then gear this game towards a crossover game not focusing specifically on WWE, TNA, etc or Ring of Honor but make this sort of an all star wrestling game with a huge roster of WWE, Ring of Honor, and TNA performers? If we do decide on a crossover type game I could in theory add a little note beside each wrestler that this performer is currently signed to Raw, Smackdown, TNA, etc. What do you think? --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Alter aeon newbie quest guides
Hi all, Was just generally curious if the next quest guides were being worked on for Vamarcon and the other Islands? I've completed the City of Vamarcon, Stillwater, trying to do Hildibrad now and will complete the other Spanish village after that. Hildibrad isn't very annoying to get around although with more locations than the others, which isn't bad. The spanish village though I keep going in circles; hard for me to really find anything there. That being said, anyone know where the shaman is in Hildibrad? I was pretty sure I saw him near the park, but I forgot. Also, I was logged out for about a month or two and I had the quest in progress involving the cornered shrew. How do I start that quest again? I've been pretty good with exploration on that game which kinda surprises me, I usually ask where everything is most times. I want to get this island done though. Thanks. In other words if nobody give a response, then I will conclude that nobody is interested and therefore will definitely give up the idea. 1. Are you interested on a iPhone or mac version of the playroom ? why or why not ? If you would have to choose between the two but not both in the same time, whould you choose a mac or an iPhone version ? why ? 2. Considering that I don't have any apple machine myself, I will probably need to let such an application developped by a third partie. It will therefore certainly not be free. How much would you be ready to pay for that application ? The money whould be ideally shared between the developper of the application and a participation on server maintenance, in the best case 50-50, and in all case I wont ahve a direct control on the produced application. N.B. To not leave any doubts on that subject, the windows version will remain free as long as donations are sufficient to keep the server up. Please be constructive and complete in your responses. I want to tame a moment and introduce myself to you all. I also have a few questions for you all. I am from Dallas Texas and am a third year university student. I study French and Russian and love learning languages! I use JAWS screen reader along with an iPhone. I have a yellow lab female guide dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind named Stockard. I am interested in learning to write and create text based games as well as iPhone applications and other accessible games for blind people. This leads me to my questions. /smiles/ I know that in order to write apps and games I need to learn a computer language so that I can code properly. I also know that there are a tun of computer programs out there that can help you write and design your games and apps. My first question is what are the computer programs out there that are the most JAWS accessible? I am having a hard time deciding whether I should try to use c++, java or what because I don't know what is good with JAWS. My second question is, I'm wondering if any of you would be willing to menter me some. Like I said, I'm just learning how to do this and I'm still learning the different computer languages used to create games/apps. So would somebody be willing to menter me and help me learn how to do this? Basically, I need somebody to help me get started and point me in the right direction as far as resources and helping me choose which programs to use, how to go about creating a game etc. Thanks, Laurel and Stockard --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Upcoming game: Blind Side
Hello everyone, Just found a link that sounds pretty interesting. This game is called Blind Side and apparently it will be cross platform on Mac, PC and iOS. I doubt it's a scam either, since it has over 300 people who are supporting it. It is about a blind couple who wake up and they find monsters outside or some such. They don't give you a whole lot of information, just that there is a discovery element to the game. There is a video clip, but I'm unable to find it. It is probably imbedded in the page. [Audyssey] Recovering a lost Alter Aeon characteR

Can't exactly remember his name either. I'm certain at character creation I did type my email, so I wonder if Dentin can recover him that way. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] need some help with adrift
I wonder, is there something like Adrift for Mac? I want to create games and yes, even though Inform seems easy, it still feels like programming to me and there's rules to follow that I just can't remember at the moment. I think doing complex things like random events is easier in Adrift than Inform. There is a tag developer is suppose to use to prevent this issue called the waitkey tag but some developers, especially those who use the Adrift runner itself, often fail to do this. They usually assume you can scroll using the mouse and tend to do that than properly tag the message to stop before it scrolls off screen. So there isn't much we can do but contact the developer and let him/her know that the text is scrolling off screen and nicely ask him/her to update the game using the waitkey tag so only x number of lines are shown at a time. As for Jaws scripting that's not something i can explain by e-mail. Jaws has scripting classes you can take that will give you professional training how to do that. I myself learned it on my own just by looking at their scripts and figuring out how it works. Since I was a computer science student at the time with some computer programming experience behind me I was able to train myself. You may or may not be able to do it the way I did it. That said maybe you can try a simplar approach by using frames or something like that. I did something similar in Window-Eyes by using a user window that announces the text every time it changes on screen. I'm pretty sure the Jaws frame manager has a similar functionality. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] anyone got anny suggestions for the next version ofbattlezone?
I wonder what MK is doing so to speak to make it more accessible. Simple mode in my honest opinion in MVC3 is... good although it'll only get you to Galactus. It only let's you do two specials, which is stupid. I like the less buttons approach to things, a four button layout rather than six. It makes normal mode in MVC3 easy to grasp than, say, SF, and I was able to remember the control skeme as to what attack was what and could focus on moves. Also, people may have problems with this but I personally like the way supers are performed in this game. A motion followed by two attack buttons, doesn't matter what they are it would appear. That also applies to moves, all you really have to know is the motion and you can use any attack depending on how damaging you want the combo to be. Allowing simple mode online sure causes cheating though. I dunno if you can even chain combos with simple mode, because once I was playing online with this dude and he pointed out that I really sucked at chaining combos; I wanted to test out Simple Mode and see if it was what the devs say it is, that you need skill and whatnot, but you also need the wrest of the characters moves... The problem with judging distances, again, is that wind sound. You can't concretely judge how far it is from you by just listening for it.. unless you pinpoint the position of that sound in your headphones or speakers and memorize where it is. And in frantic fights, if you have enemies coming at you and your mind is bent on taking care of them first, you really don't have the option to stop and judge that sound while you're being pummelled. The problem with judging distances like they do in mainstream games is that, a sighted person can look at that pit and see how wide it is, whether they need a running jump or not. In audio games, you don't have that. Unless the dev programs the look command to tell you how wide the pit is, you have to guess. So some people would prefer warning sounds so they at least have a source to go on. I personally don't care either way. I played mainstream games for long periods of time before I even knew of audio games, so it doesn't really matter to me. I can cope with either. Target sounds for when enemies are in range is fair to me. Because why stand there mashing space until you hit something? Especially in this game, where the sound that is used to sound the attack is also the sound that signifies the hit. There is no difference between the two... unlike in mainstream games where you generally have a sound for the attack and a second sound for the hit, so if you miss an attack, that hit effect won't play. And fireballs are a different case from pits as you can stand still and wait for it to come to you... and there really is no appropriate time to duck. Soon as you hear a fireball, if you wanted you could just kill nearby enemies and stay crouched until the fireball passes by. Sounds for blades are not necessary as that would also remove challenge from the game since the whole point is to time your run past them. That's where sighted people and blind gamers have the same challenge. They have to observe the paterns at which the blades shoot out and retract. We have to do the same... with sound. You asked how far do we take the dumbing down approach? This is exactly what so many hardcore fighting game fans had about Marvel VS. Capcom 3 and Street Fighter IV when they first came out... as a diehard fighting fan myself, I knew where the arguments came from. Less buttons in the case of MVC 3 as compared to MVC 2, supers and ultras in SF and the removal of the perry system from SF 3, x-factor for MVC... I could go on and on. This was all done to make the game more accessible for new players while still retaining depth in the games. A lot of people said that that kind of adjustment was dumbing the game down for the scrubs out there. Maybe they're right. Maybe they're wrong. I personally think they're wrong... because there's still a lot of deep fighting to be had in both games. That kind of attitude is exactly why so many people never get into fighting games... because the pros are so adverse to accessibility and the like. When you look at it.. the two situations are remarkably similar. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hi Clement, I'll fess up now and say that I totally intend to get you started on x-ray moves. I'm wondering whether we think the same thing. I actually pulled off my first ever X-ray move by accident. Oh the joys of button mashing! Having learned how to execute them intentionally now, they've started to really irritate me. Essentially I think the problem is, while they sound and by all accounts look great, they totally break the constant pressure of the fight. Things like mega long combos or chains of attacks make me panic when I'm on the receiving end or exhilerated when I'm the one dealing them out, but X-ray doesn't manage to do that. I think the problem is that once the sequence has started, so far as I can tell there's no way to break it, so the person on the receiving end just sits there hopelessly. The sequences take so long that I have time to be angry that someone's x-rayed me, sad that my character is having a bad day internally all of a sudden, but then there's also time to consider what to do next. On the other end of the equation, they're not satisfying to be the person who's dishing them out either. I think that's because they aren't hard enough to execute, so there's no big sense of achievement, just the break in the rhythm of the fight. That disruption has put me off my stride enough that I've almost lost matches I was comfortably winning before throwing an X-ray into the mix. Is that what you meant by broken? To me, they just seem like a gimick. Sad part is that they didn't need to be there. It's hard to tell how deep this new engine is just from the characters in the demo, but to me, it definitely feels like an improvement from MK VS DC. It's all subjective of course, but that would've been enough for me I think without the new gimick. Scott On 4/7/11, Clement Chou chou.clem...@gmail.com wrote: Simple mode lets you chain three hit combos... but nothing more than that. Personally, I don't see what the problem with six buttons is. It's simply three punches and three kicks.. at different strengths. Is it that hard to get that? Again I don't want to sound antagonizing, but it doesn't take a genius to figure that out... I happen to agree with the upper-level fighting game community, that while four buttons in this game is okay, you're taking out so much of the learning curve that it almost seems like there's nothing to learn. Supers I don't mind since that's the way they've always been done in the vs. series... since those and Street Fighter games are completely different entities. MK's definition of accessibility is having almost the same startup chain of attacks to cancel into other moves. Unlike SF and tekken that require a lot of timing, MK, at least from the demo seems like you'll be able tochain attacks together without too much effort. And x-ray moves... don't even get me started on those. Gory and cool, yes... but a bit broken as a lot of people will point out to you. But I won't get into that now... I'm excited for the game, and want to save any griping for if and when I find things to gripe about. lol. [Audyssey] Response from Jellyvision regarding You don't Know Jack
Hey all, A while ago I had emailed the You don't Know Jack Jellyvision product manager I believe he is, Mike Bilder, about the possibility of the Jack Attack being made accessible. Mainly I emailed him to tell him that yes, we do play and since the game wasn't out yet I had asked if there was keyboard entry questions, as that would be an accessibility issue on consoles. Turns out it'd be an issue for everyone. This is his response. I like it, and usually when someone mentions to You don't know Jack on Twitter that they're a blind player they start following us immediately after they see it, so I think they're interested, to say the least. I have to tell you, your email has started quite a lengthy discussion here at the office. Unfortunately I'm not sure there's much we can do to address this in the current version. I really wish I would have heard from you about 8 months ago. The current version contains 3 types of questions: 1. The traditional multiple choice. 2. The DisOrDat 3. The Jack Attack. There are no question types that require keyboard / virtual keyboard entry. There are some variant specialty questions that are based on the multiple choice but they are executed in the same manner as the normal multiple choice. Given what you've explained below, all of the game, with the exception of the Jack Attack, should be fully accessible. I don't know if you know this, but a good number of us fans of the old games are blind. I miss the game, and have pre-ordered the game for my PS3 and will be playing it on Tuesday. I notice that Cookie continues to read the questions, this is great. However, I'm concerned; will there be question types like Roadkill? In the ride, that was inaccessible. That doesn't annoy me more than the Jack Attack though. The reason that this is the most frustrating is that with the new multiplayer features, we won't really be able to compete. And the people who I'm playing against certainly won't read the Jack Attack words as they come up, they'll just take advantage and win. I'm just curious if there could possibly be anything you can do to improve the jack attack experience for blind players? Because so much of the game is accessible and playable for us already, that's the thing. It's just that online blind people can probably only compete against blind people and even then, we have to be really good at the questions as we can't answer the jack attacks. If I do crappy on the questions and get some right on the attack that's what the whole point of the attack is, to get bonus cash. Also, I'm curious, are there questions where you have to type in answers this time? I would think on consoles and a virtual keyboard that'd be hard. Thanks for reading this email if you do at least. I hope that maybe you can figure out a way to make the attacks accessible and put it in a downloadable patch. My first guess would be to have Cookie somehow read them, but I guess the whole point is to see them in buzz in quickly. Anyway, if nothing else, I'll enjoy the game and Cookie's humor, even if I can only truly play against the computer or local. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] my frustration with the blind gaming comunity.
I have to agree with Yohandy here. Is the mentality so closedminded that people give up just because the menus don't talk? Do you really think that's gonna stop me from playing Marvel VS. Capcom next week? Heck no. Do you really think I won't play Mortal Kombat because of no speech feedback? Or, is it the combos in fighting games and you just don't want to learn them right away at least. My solution? Try Rock Band. Blazblue is also a good fighting game for beginners complete with a playable tutorial, however it is harder than most and faster than your average fighting game, although Marvel VS. Capcom will be the fastest game out of all three games; SF, MK and BB. No matter though, this email is going to uninterested inboxes. Yohandy said it with brilliant execution. P.S. On the audiogames.net forum a few days ago I saw a post wondering if Call of Duty: Black Ops could ever be made accessible. My answer? Probably, if we reach out and show the sighted community we can play video games first. Especially fighting games. Fighting games don't have as much popularity as shooters do because you have to learn them, something of which a blind person can do. The way to show the sighted community we're out there is get excellent at a fighting game and compete at, say, Evo. If we were there, we'd be on G4 and basically famous. So everyone, purchase a PS3/360 and show these people it's possible. Orin orin8...@gmail.com Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/orinks Skype: orin1112 On Feb 7, 2011, at 1:12 PM, Yohandy wrote: Hey guys, Ok I'm gonna go ahead and say it. I find myself getting extremely frustrated with the blind gaming community. Why you ask? ok here goes. I'm sure you guys have noticed I've been putting up some rock band samples up. you've also noticed Clement has been putting up some street fighter IV samples and various other samples. So why is it that when we ask for feedback or comments on these samples we work hard to create, people simply either ignore us completely, or the same 3 or 4 people are the ones to always respond? well you know what I think the reason for that is? simply that the games we post about are mainstream games, not audio games. I've noticed that when a new audio game comes out, even if it's the most simplistic game in existence, everyone's all jumping to download it immediately and there are threads that span hundreds of messages on the subject. But when we post something having to do with console games, the thread dies in a matter of hours. I'm sure Clement has been feeling this frustration as well. it's been leaking through in his emails to the list even if he hasn't mentioned it outright. So my question is this: what must we do to get you guys interested in something other than topspeed 3, or any other audio game for that matter? don't you guys have that spark of curiosity to find out everything there is to find about video games? why is everyone ignoring these games outright? This community has hundreds of members, and only a very limited amount of people even talk about mainstream games. it's all audio games, audio games, and more audio games. there's so much more out there for you to find guys. how can you call yourself a gamer when you aren't even willing to download the files Clement and I put up to at least listen to what these games have to offer? Whenever I put up a rock band sample, I get like 4 or 5 downloads at most. however I rarely get any feedback. I think you guys are just shoving these files in your hard drives and don't even take a listen. if you do, then you have the curiosity of a robot. I don't know about Clement, but I'm not planning on putting anything else up. What's the point? no one seems to care what we have to say, or have any curiosity about console gaming. you guys just keep playing your audio games and keep your closed-minded mentality about game accessibility in general. If you think I'm taking things too far, consider this: remember when Clement and I had that little Street Fighter seminar? I finally thought that people finally had some interest in what we had to say and in the game and such. we got some really good questions, and over all had a really good time. but once that seminar ended, what do you think happened? That's right. absolutely nothing. people basically were like oh ok, that game had awesome sounds and music and such. ok back to playing some tank commander. at least, that's how I feel personally. it was fun as a spur of the moment thing. Now let me ask you this. how many of you, after listening to that seminar went over to gamestop and bought a copy of Street Fighter? or even go to a friend's house and try the game out? My guess is 0. ok rant over. Hi, The recent MK games starting with Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe stories are accessible. Blazblue's story is playable, and so will the new Mortal Kombat and marvel VS. Capcom 3. So yes, fighting games are starting to have nice stories. Only one that doesn't have one yet is Street Fighter I think. Indeed I frequently tried to complete the game on all characters just for the experience. That is why those beat em ups with inaccessible story mode like the later mk games interest me far less. Hi Philip, That's the thing, games don't have manual's anymore. When I was developing the tone game in the manual of BGT, I created the example but add something like a tutorial when the start game function is called. Want to wrap my head around sound positioning, so may do the second example and have a tutorial in that one and post it. But most games at the beginning have a tutorial level or levels which guide you through the operations of it, and then the real game begins. Most games with a story make it sound as though the tutorial isn't there by implementing it well into the story. Hey guys, Ok I'm gonna go ahead and say it. That's right. absolutely nothing. people basically were like oh ok, that game had awesome sounds and music and such. ok back to playing some tank commander. at least, that's how I
Re: [Audyssey] my frustration with the blind gaming comunity.
Hi Thomas, Think you hit the nale on the head here. The small number of us will continue to play advanced games and that'll be that, I guess. Which I suppose is perfectly fine with me. Means we won't be noticed as much by developers, although I think I did get the You don't know Jack Jellyvision games developer's attention the other day via email and Twitter today. I emailed the general manager of Jellyvision telling him that, mainly, for the most part, the game can be played with no problems, except the Jack Attack. I also told them on Twitter and they followed me, after I mentioned it, and I don't think they follow everyone who follows them. So, I think I at least peaked their interest. Orin orin8...@gmail.com Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/orinks Skype: orin1112 On Feb 7, 2011, at 3:15 PM, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Yohandy, I have a few theories what is going on, and these aren't based so much on fact but just my experience in dealing with the VI gaming community in general. First, is probably simply a lack of interest in the types of games being presented. I'll take myself for example. I am into mainstream games, have played several different mainstream games over the years, but something like Rockband or Street Fighter just simply isn't my thing. I like adventure games with things like history, treasure hunting, puzzle solving, etc which is why I'm writing a game like Mysteries of the Ancients in the first place. Games like Street Fighter are good games, but I'm not really into that sort of game personally. Therefore I really don't have much interest in downloading a podcast on it much less running out and buying a copy for myself. Second, is accessibility issues. While Street Fighter, Rockband, Marvel Verses Capcom, etc are playable it doesn't come easy for most blind players. For example, the menus don't talk so you have to learn and memorize the menus for those kinds of games. It is opsticals like this that put anyone totally blind off from venturing into mainstream gaming. In their mind it is only half accessible. When mainstream games have talking menus, spoken feedback for this or that, then they'll be willing to look at it. Without these accessible features that Tank Commander, Shades of Doom, etc have they are of the opinion why bother? Finally, there is the conceptual and skill level gap between mainstream and accessible audio games. As you know mmainstream games are written at a skill level, a complexity, far above any audio game out there. In that sense the average blind gamer, who maybe doesn't know much about mainstream games, is just totally blown away by the complexity. It is like overload for him/her since they are absolutely ignorent about how to begin playing a game like that. Maybe they simply don't have the skills to do it. For example, take Mysteries of the Ancients. Right now I'm adding some extra features to beta 18 such as timed locks which, to my knowledge, has never been done before in an audio game. Hard to believe that something that simple has been around for ages in mainstream games, but isn't even used in audio games. I could point out hundreds of other examples just as simple, but the fact is most of the audio gamers out here are clueless when it comes to mainstream games. A game like Street Fighter has various complex fighting styles that no audio game has come close to remotely matching, and is just so totally different from the audio games we have. Basically, what I'm saying is you and I are advanced gamers. Most blind people are not. They are rather inexperienced, don't know what is out there, and maybe don't have the skills to pickup and play Street Fighter, MVC, Mortal Kombat, or anything remotely accessible for the Play Station, XBox, Wii, etc. They just aren't advanced enough to get into it.I'll tell you why I think this way. For example, take Shades of Doom. That's a game designed for the blind, by a totally blind game developer, and as games goes it is pretty simple compared to similar games for the mainstream market. Yet I have heard countless people say the game is too complicated, it is too confusing, I can't figure out how to play it, you name it. Now, if there is a game like that made specifically for the blind and blind people can't play it how can we expect them to take a step forward and begin playing mainstream games with less aaccessibility features in some cases? Just some thoughts to think about. I'm not saying that these things are necessarily true, but those are my thoughts. People aren't really as interested it as you are. I don't know there is a way to increase interest in it if their skills are lacking, the games aren't that interesting to a person, or they are just too complex for the average blind gamer. Cheers! [Audyssey] Inform VS. Adrift
Hi all, Well, I originally wanted to make this game in BGT, but decided that another way I can do it would be to make it a text adventure. I'm pretty good with BGT concepts, however what still confuses me is when I start messing around with sound positioning. BGT has made it easy to make code understandable, like I can go into the Battle Zone code, look at it, and get the gist of what everything means, except sound positioning and player position and whether it's 6, 20 or whatever. So, as to my question: I was wondering what limits I have with adrift VS. Inform? I looked at Inform and while it does seem easy to begin with, from a design standpoint it was hard for me to figure out what I wanted to do and translate it into code. Even though the code is in English it gave me a headache after a while trying to understand everything when I want to figure out how to do a specific thing. Adrift seems more simpler, but with that simple functionality what will it take away from my game VS. using Inform? Thanks. [Audyssey] New GameSpot You don't know Jack demo
Hey all, Here's a video I recently found that features two players on the 360 playing the new YDKJ, coming out next Tuesday for 360, PS3, PC, and DS and I dunno if there's more. Anyway, it seems nice and accessible as always, except the Jack attack. Ah well. I think when playing online with sighted people I wonder with voice chat if they'd be able to help us somehow. Re: [Audyssey] marvel vs. capcom 3 details
I also pre-ordered this game. It's gonna be sweet. Story whise it sounds kinda interesting, but for once, I'm actually interested in the fighting. I do like the controls. I'm guessing the exchange does something different for each character. Never played a tag team game though, so learning which team is best against another will be interesting for me to say the least. Orin orin8...@gmail.com Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/orinks Skype: orin1112 On Jan 25, 2011, at 1:35 AM, Clement Chou wrote: So now that the game is less than a month away from release, I figured I'd post some stuff about how the games works, as a fighting game player and as someone who's been wanting this game for years... gameplay first though. Marvel Vs. capcom 3 is going to be 3 on 3 like marvel vs. capcom 2. For those who don't know, 3 on 3 does not mean six-player action. You choose a team of three characters, and you duke it out with another team of three. You play until one team has been eliminated all the way. The trick is, as you play you can tag characters in and out, so you can strategize who you want to use when. The gameplay is fast, but not quite as fast as MVC 2. However, it still may take some time to get used to the game if you aren't used to that speed. I urge everyone not to make this a turnoff though, as getting used to how fast MVC play can be is not as bad as it seems. The game will feature the usual special moves along with super flashy hyper combos aka super moves that you can perform. The super meter has five bars this time around, and each character will have what are called two level 1 supers and one level 3. These take up one level of your meter and three, respectively. Controls: The controls in marvel vs. capcom 3 are as follows: three attack buttons and a fourth button known as the exchange or e button. This button is used for launching opponents into the air for an air combo as well as being used to tag partners in and out. A list of the buttons follows: A: light attack B: medium attack C: heavy attack E: exchange button. A, B, C and e are how the buttons are going to be listed in faqs and guides. This game has at least 30 characters, with probably more to be revealed. Capcom characters will have the option for english or japanese voice acting, and marvel characters will posess english only. I will list as many of the characters as I remember, and for the capcom characters I will list what series they are originally from. Marvel characters will only have their names, as I'm not as knowledgeable about comics as I would like to be. Capcom lineup: Akuma: Street fighter Chun li: street fighter Ryu: Street Fighter Morigan: Darkstalkers Felicia: darkstalkers Dante: Devil May Cry Trish: Devil May Cry Chris Redfield: Resident Evil Viewtiful Joe: from the viewtiful joe series Albert Wesker: Resident Evil Tron-bon: Megaman Crimson Viper: Street Fighter Zero: Megaman Mike Hagger: Final fight Marvel Lineup: Wolverine Captain America Spider Man] Iron Man Hulk She-hulk DR. Doom Magneto MODOK Dormamu Storm Phoenix / dark phoenix That's all I can think of for now... enjoy the info... and when I get the game on the day of release, expect a recording! Clement. PS: for all those concerned about learning hard inputs for moves, fear not. There is a simple mode for those players who just want to jump right in and play. One button will be assigned to regular attacks, one for special moves and one for hyper combos. This will be opposed to the standard fighting game fare of quarter circle motions, dragon punch motions, etc. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Hopeful news on the future accessibility of Star Breed, a Science Fiction gamebook for iOS
Hi all, I contacted the developer of this game. The core of the game is accessible, the story. However, the story requires you to hack into terminals, help people with networking, etc, as the main character you're Well rounded with combat but you primarily perform hacking operations. The hacking and combat battles come in the form of visual minigames that, depending on how played, effect the outcome of the battle. Possible outcomes either you could probably die, get injured, get critically injured, etc. Since i paid $2.99 for this app, I was slightly disappointed that the battles weren't playable, as that's what makes up most of the game, besides telling a sweet story in the process. Right now, all we can do is read the introduction and start what I think is a tutorial. The problem? You have to hack the security of a Tank, where it becomes unplayable. Was surprised to get a response back. Took a few days, but here it is. P.S. Anyone know how to contact EA Mobile? They've got two totally text based games at least that's what I read in reviews, yet VoiceOver is completely inaccessible with them. These inparticular would be nice to become accessible due to weekly content and or story updates. The part where I get stuck though is when I have to help an engineer with a Tank. When I jack in, I see a screen that says security threat detected or something like that, with something that says chip timer sequence and medium. When I double-tap either one of those, the VoiceOver gesture for click, nothing happens. Is there possibly anything you can do to make this accessible for VoiceOver blind users? The story parts are great, but so far I'm unable to hack to get passed this tank thing. Love the music I've heard both in the main menu and in the game, on the intro and getting briefed, hope there's a few more tracks. Re: [Audyssey] Need Street Fighter IV help
Hi Sarah, Just curious; are you using the keyboard or a controller for the PC version? I would think that the keyboard would actually be quite difficult. Now I'm stuck and could need some help, but since my problem is quite specific I think it would be better if someone who's willing to help me could contact me off list. Just as a first information, I'm stuck on Ryu's normal trial level 4, the first move there. Would be great if someone could write back.
