Re: [Audyssey] USA game web site?
Hi William, Yes, that is one of the games under concideration for cross platform conversion using Java. The more i look at what needs to be done it would be actually more rational to convert the game to Java making the changes, bug fixes, as I convert the code from C# to Java. As it happens I have actually converted several of the games core classes from C# to Java, and should have an engine to begin programming the new game with by next week. So anyway that is what this is all about. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Hi Kuvvosh, Well, one question I have about Mobile Speak is how well does it handle Java applications. For example, how well does it do with Java dialog boxes written using the swing API. There are some things like the registration form that would need to be accessible to Mobile Speak. As far as conversion goes I haven't tried converting an entire game from J2SE to J2ME, and probably the hardest part is reading up on differences between the two platforms. However, the main reason I am looking at converting to Java is I recognise there is a growing need, desire, to have accessible games available on other platforms and devices besides Windows. The Mac Visionaries list and the blind Linux mailing lists are just an example of the growing blind community of members who are moving away from Windows usage and branching out into new operating systems and platforms. Then, there is special devices like smart phones and the Pacmates which can be targeted for accessible game development, but currently are not. A lot of the problem here is most accessible games are based on Windows technologies such as VB 6 and DirectX rather than on more cross platform solutions. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] USA game web site?
Hi, Well, at the moment my primary focus is still on PC games and Windows games since that is still the largest section of users of accessible games, and Java access issues and solutions on Mac, Windows, and Linux for me is solvable. For example, I recently discovered a new Window toolkit for Java called swt which is a pretty nice alternative to swing. With swt I would be able to expose application elements like buttons, message boxes, edit fields, etc with a standard Win32 interface. The reason that is important is Java apps using swt do not require the Java access bridge, and are accessible with Window Eyes, NVDA, Jaws, etc right out of the box. Even more importantly there are efforts to port swt to make OS X and Linux which allows swt applications for window elements to be recompiled for Mac and Linux and expose Windows using Cocoa or GTK+2 which would make the apps accessible to VoiceOver and Orca directly out of the box. Obviously, my research is still in the early stages, but I think swt might be a very good choice for USA Games so that I do not have to worry about if the access bridge is running on Mac, Windows, and Linux correctly and if said screen reader has access bridge support to begin with. constantine (on laptop) wrote: As much as I think it would be cool, I'd much rather you spend your time on PC games, unless you have a bit extra, but I for one don't have a smartphone, but a pac mate- but, I'd be more likely to play games on the laptop or desktop. just my thoughts Have a good day from Tyler C. Hi Cara, Indeed I have. There is a link to JInput on the USA Games dev center http://developers.usagames.us which takes you directly to the JInput home page. Anyway, I am not as concerned over joysticks, force feedback wheels, etc as losing Sapi 5 support on non-Windows platforms. There are a handful of gamers interested in being able to edit the list of drivers, sponsors, etc. To do that you need a qualified speech engine like Sapi to speak the contents of the file rather than pre-recorded speech. I imagine there is an easy enough solution like recording the wav files using Eloquence, and then letting the users be able to record a new driver15.wav file replacing the name Joe Smo with Jeff Gordon. So that is one possability. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. well Its not smartphones I want games for but also the games using the simbion os. For example, assume I wanted to target a smart phone. I am new to the j2me platform, new to writing games for phones, and want to start off easy. The last thing I want to do is port a major production game to the phone and find out I did it wrong. Instead of beginning with the very large game, which takes several hours of man power, I might write something smaller like Space Invaders, Empire Strikes Back, or Monopoly. Basicly design something I can get results quickly and debug my code and learn what I did right and wrong with a simple app rather than a large app. Cory wrote: I think you have a lot more smart phone users than ya think. Hi Shaun, Ok? your message didn't make a lot of sense. The Symbion OS is the primary operating system for smart phones, cellular devices, etc. I can think of some brands like Nokia that uses Symbion almost exclusively in there cellular devices. So obviously an accessible game to run on Nokia phones it would have to support Symbion OS which Symbion OS does support Java J2ME apps. That other smart phone os, Windows Mobile, supports J2ME apps as well so that is not a huge issue from were I sit. shaun everiss wrote: well Its not smartphones I want games for but also the games using the simbion os. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. Ah Thomas, you can see I've visited the website lately! lol! anyway, very cool and I'd forgotten about SAPI as an issue, but I too, would think there's got to be some sort of reasonable work around as you suggest. Re: [Audyssey] USA game web site?
Hi Kuvvosh, I'm not going to say that is impossible, but the initial version if I use Java 2 SE would be mainly designed for PC and Mac platforms. I'd have to convert the Java code from J2SE to J2ME to support smart phones, PDA's, and other devices that use the Java Mobile Eddition. While that isn't a super dificult task I'd have to know it would be worth my time and money to convert the game to support phones. Kuvvosh wrote: Oh wow, Java format? Re: [Audyssey] USA game web site?
Hi Kuvvosh, Well, most of the web site is back up and running, but there are a couple of areas I haven't completed yet. I am also working on the developer center http://developers.usagames.us which has the basic wiki framework setup, a few pages started, but I have been far too busy to really work on the web site or the games the last few days. As far as MOTA Beta 2 goes it is going to have a lot of upgrades though it will still be a side-scroller. I am actually still in the planning and designing faze, and haven't gotten into the core programming state yet. One thing I would really really like to do is convert the Montezuma's Return engine into pure Java so that Beta 2 would run independant of .NET and be able to run cross platform. Though, I have to see how much work will be involved in the conversion. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org.
