[Audyssey] Cthulhu nation accessibility assistance!

2008-02-06 Thread Dark
Greetings.

Well, if people remember the Cthulhu nation game, I've been looking into it and
contacting the admins, whoI will say are being incredibly nice about access
related issues (read their mail at the bottom of this).

I've had a brief look at the game, and it appears to function similar to
Gothador, with a map of 9 squares and coordinates, and the player moving
betwene them via clicking the coordinate lables, I don't believe, however all
necessary information for the map is contained merely in text (I've told the
admins about this).

to view stats, inventory etc it's necessary to click on some game gif immages
(and read the link text), and I haven't managed to work out the inventory
and equipping system at all yet (again, I've contacted the admins of the game
reguarding this).

At the moment I'm horribly busy rehearsing for a production, and anyway
there's only one of me, so I'd really appreciate it if some other people could
put their heads together over this, look into Cthulhu nation and make access
related suggestions to the admins, especially people who know more about web
design and screen reader access than I do.

Any help would be much appreciated, --- by me and by future Vi players of this
game.

Beware the Cthu!

Dark.

Hi Luke,

Thanks for getting in touch. To be honest, we have never had a request like
this before, and it never even entered our heads. But that's just the ignorance
on our part!

Having read your request a couple of times, we are still a little unclear as to
what you would like us to actually consider to help you.

From what we understand so far, you can read the text, but it is the images
(for example the board tiles) that you have difficulty with? Further, to help
with this, you would like to see some sort of pop-up text bos with a name or
description of the tile, for example Watson's General Store for a shop, or
Mountain Region for a landscape tile?

You mention that you use a speech synthesizer to read the text. Again, this is
a new area to us, and we would be interested to hear how you accomplish this,
particularly with regard to the many text boxes and written explanations within
Cthulhu Nation.

With regard to the pop-up text for the graphics, how far ranging on this idea
were you thinking? Just the board game tiles, or other areas as well? We would
obviously have to look at the total requirements for setting up these text
windows, and how much work would be involved. If it seemed fairly straight
forward, this might not be an issue.

Finally, how did you envisage this happening? Would it be a case of the cursor
hovering over the tile to produce the pop-up, or would there be a
different/better requirement for your needs?

Thanks once again for your email, and we are indeed intrigued by your request.
Let me know if what I have said is along the right conclusions, and possibly
expand on your requests to help us further with this issue.

Regards,

Six
(Cthulhu Nation Admin)

  Hello.

I was really interested to ffind out about the Cthulhu nation mmorp. Not only
is having a game set in the lovecraft mythos a great idea, but also looking at
the way the game works, quests and investigation seem to play a huge part in
the game, rather than just constant pvp as in many of the mmorps I've seen,
which is exellent.

the only problem is, I am visually impared and use a speech synthesiser to
read text on the internet.

most of the in game text, character creation and viewing of stats and items
etc is quite accessible to screen reading software, however it seems that the
map, being entirely image based, is not.

I was therefore wondering if you might considder adding text lables for the
various map tyles, sinse this is (from what I see thus far), the only thing
stopping visually impared people from enjoying (though if that is the right
word when applied to lovecraft), Cthulhu nation.

With all of the Lovecraft writings available online, and the game's emphasis
on investigation and a rich back story, I think quite a lot of visually impared
gamers would be incredibly interested in playing, so I very much hope you'll
considder adding the appropriate lables.

  all the best,

  Luke.

Hi orin.

As has been said, the movement on the game is annoyingly based on clicking
immage based tyles on a map (I couldn't even find them with Hal as links
which was weerd).

I Have however practiced all my diplomacy and sent the developers of the
game a hopefully polite E-mail about the map.

I'll let everyone know what happens.

Beware the Cthulhu!

Dark.

 Hi all,

Has anyone played this game and had any luck with the map? I find it a
bit confusing, and was just wondering if anyone had tried it out.

The game is set in the 1920's, and this orginazation known as The
Group wants you to go out and kill all types of creatures, I don't
know how the storyline goes but I will say that it does sound complex.

You can find the game at:
 http://www.cthulhunation.co.uk/

Hopefully a few of you can try it out and let me know if it's
playable. I have already tried it, and as I said found it quite
confusing, but if I do indeed learn how to play this I'm gonna
continue doing it, it looks huge. It's set in a horror setting.

 Enjoy.

hi we stuck as the game is based on tiles. tiles represent quests.
again looks like we have to ask again for accessibility left behind as
per usual
