I found a new (to me) text-based football simulation that runs under
Windows and can be played either in human vs human, or human vs
computer AI mode. The simulation is called txtfl (textflex football)
and is available at
http://www.textflex.com/txtfl/manual/index.html

I call this a simulation advisedly; it allows you to create teams and
players, or download statistics from the web, create plays to run and
run games. The game play is quite accessible as it involves choosing
numbers to select plays, and with a little fiddling, the output is
easily read. The team creation can be done by creating and editing
text files, which while cumbersome is also completely
accessible. The one thing I haven't figured out how to do yet is to
import team and player data from the NFL site. While it would be
nice, this feature isn't absolutely required to play the game.

Over all, my first impression is that this is not a product for the
casual player who is content with something like Jim Kitchen's
football game. It isn't as easy to set up, offers a lot more choices
for configuration and is generally much more complex. I think the
game play feels satisfyingly realistic.

All in all, I'd give this product a 9 for realism, and a 5 or 6 for
user interface/ease of use.

Oh, and it's free.
