[Audyssey] a message from this lists hosting provider.
Hello; My name is Shane Davidson, owner of the company that provides hosting services for both the Audyssey and USAGames interactive websites. My staff became aware both yesterday and early this morning of some very despicable behavior by one member, (or x-member, this is yet to be determined). This individual was posting hateful, difamitory, and sexually harassing messages, posing as other valid and upstanding list members who have been apart of the blind gaming community for years as gamers, developers and as interested parties. We take this very seriously, and on behalf of my company, and this lists management, I extend my most heartfelt apologies to each and every one of you. I have requested, and obtained the cooperation of the underlying service provider that was providing this individuals vehicle to become a royal pain, Linode LLC. Who have assured me that they are taking steps to stop this behavior immediately. I have also opened a ticket on behalf of Thomas Ward, who owns both Audyssey and USAGames interactive, in our own support system so we can more easily track this issue. We are working diligently to bring this to an end, and please don't leave over this. Thank you for your patience and time. Sincerely; Shane Davidson --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Hello. Thanks for the appologgy. While I won't deny that seeing the huge volume of insulting and s/xually explicit mesages, (especially those supposedly from myself), was not pleasant, I do know this was obviously one idiot, and I am glad steps are being taken to stop them from doing such again and restrict their general internet access in the future. Re: [Audyssey] a message from this lists hosting provider.
Hello Lori, It isn't quite that simple. The people responsible for the spam attacks were faking e-mail addresses of various legitimate list members, and obviously the e-mails did not actually come from those members themselves. However, Mailman, the list software we use, has no way of knowing if an e-mail address is being faked or not and approved them not knowing it was spam. However, we have contacted Linode and are working to cut off the perpetrator's access to the list. cheers! If this is who I think it is, and it is a similar enough modus operandi to be likely, he is mentally ill. Please be kind, even though you have suffered some annoyance, and in the cases of the people he has impersonated possible actual harm, since the messages are now forever and findable on the Internet, I think he's a sick individual and needs compassion rather than scathing rage. Re: [Audyssey] a message from this lists hosting provider.
Hi Lori, The spam wasn't actually sent from the email accounts from which it seemed to originate. The email addresses were set correctly, but the SMTP server of the sender is entirely different from mine and this is how they can potentially be traced. So there is nothing that I can do locally to prevent my name from being used, unfortunately. Re: [Audyssey] a message from this lists hosting provider.
Hi Chris. Does this person know he is mentally ill? If so, then he should take steps in his life to deal with that disability and thus make certain for example he is not near a computer if this is episodic. I have several friends with mental illnesses and this is exactly what they do, manage it like any other disability as part of their lives and take responsability for what they can. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I being genophobic myself really didn't enjoy those messages at all, and I don't appreciate mental illness being used as an excuse for harmful behaviour even if it is a reason. A favourite (and wonderfully politically incorrect), saying of a friend of mine who suffers from a very serious mental illness which she has to manage on a dayly basis and which genuinely threatens her life is mad, not stupid! If he is unconscious of his mental illness, well perhaps he should not be! Beware the grue! Dark. - Original Message - From: Christopher Bartlett atouchofrevere...@gmail.com To: 'Gamers Discussion list' gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, December 15, 2013 10:52 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] a message from this lists hosting provider. This is the main reason why I refuse to post on here using my full name. At least when he sent those messages using the name Stephen it cushioned the blow because he wasn't able to use my last name, so if people do google my full name, the posts won't show up in the results. At 09:57 AM 12/16/2013, you wrote: This is an interesting point, actually. Can the messages be removed from the archives? I'm going to say something that might sound quite odd but as a research scientist that I hope to become in a few years, I would like to investigate mental illnesses and how it works. Would would actually think that if there was a way to give oneself a mental illness and then cure it back would be considered bad science? Many people do not know what it is like and many people wonder about that. Join me and others at the National Alliance on Mental Illness. http://www.nami.org/ On 12/15/2013 6:29 PM, Charles Rivard wrote: On this one, you're absolutely right, however, I will not beware the Grue. --- Be positive! Re: [Audyssey] a message from this lists hosting provider.
Well Ulysses according to several deffinitions I know you and everyone in the world have already experienced mental illness. In very many cases mental illness is an exaggeration of the norm, For example most people have fealt a degree of negative emotion or sadness, it becomes depression however when either a, it has no visible cause or B, it's effects cannot be countered by the individual themselves even when the cause of the depression is known. Same with things like schizophrenia, since you've had beliefs, fears, perceptions of reality that weren't correct. My one concern with a purely neurological apporach is that it can be extremely dehumanising and can ignore the freedom and autonomy of individuals. indeed in extreme cases I have seen strong proponents of biological determinism adopt an epeophinomonological perspective, where they believe the actual qualea of experienced consciousness is simply a sideline of an underlying neurological process, and would like to for example replace the term sadness in our dictionary as to just! mean low serotonin levels, even though in practice the link between serotonin and depression is just a corrilation not an identical one. Or to put it another way, the brain is a physical object which possesses mental properties which are not identical with the physical aspects of that object though they relate to it. This is why while I find neuro psychology fascinating as a subject I'd not want to forget the human element of mind and consciousness, indeed as one very respected philosopher in my department who has himself studdied the relationship of experience and consciousness from a buhdist perspective once said to me the biggest problem with psychologists is that they aren't good enough philosophers A great book to read on this subject is Introduction tophilosophy of Mind by E.J. Lowe, (and I'm not just recommending it because it was written by one of my university's professors), since it goes through many of the central issues and offers some quite unique perspectives. Then again, unless your planning on creating a game of Brain invaders this is probably off topic for the list so we'd better bring this discussion back to games.
