[Audyssey] Eamon Deluxe, Successful On Windows Vista!

2008-11-16 Thread Trenton Matthews

Hey folks,
Here's the steps on how I got Eamon Deluxe to work oon Windows Vista. This
is method 2 of 3 from the article:
Workaround to This System Does Not Support Full Screen Mode in Windows
Vista

Find the full article at:

My own findings will follow:

The following steps guide you on how to install the Standard VGA Graphics
Adapter in Vista.
1. Right-click on the Windows desktop and then choose Personalize from the
pop up contextual menu.

2. Click on Display Settings link from the Personalization dialog window.
3. On the Monitor tab of Display Settings window, click on Advanced
Settings. button.
4. If you're not already on the Adapter tab, click on Adapter tab to
activate it. Then click on the
Properties button under the Adapter Type section. Allow UAC permission
request.

Properties of Video Adapter
5. On the Display Adapter Properties window, click on Driver tab.
6. Click on Update Driver. button. Then select Browse My Computer for
Driver Software option.

Browse for Vista driver
7. Click on Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
option.

Pick from a list of device drivers
8. Select and highlight Standard VGA Graphics Adapter from the list when
prompted to select a

device driver you want to install for this hardware, then click on Next.
Standard VGA Graphics Adapter
9. Windows Vista will install the new standard VGA video driver to replace
the original driver for
your graphics accelerator. If your monitor goes blank (no signal), wait five
minutes, then power
down your computer and restart it normally. If your monitor does not go
blank, wait while the

driver is installed.
10. Click on Close or OK button on all dialog boxes repetitively until you're
back to the desktop

or your computer restarted.
11. Restart your computer if you're not prompted and have not already done
so.
Once computer rebooted, you should be able to open programs or command
prompt shell in full screen
window. You may need to set the resolution again, as everything related to
display settings is

likely to be reset.
If you want to reverse this procedure and install back the video display
card's manufacturer
driver, follow the same instructions again, but choose the option to let
Windows automatically
install the appropriate software for your system instead of browsing your
computer for driver
software. If you unable to do so by clicking on Properties button on Adapter
tab, go to Device
Manager and directly select Update Driver Software on right click context
menu.

*text from article ends here*

Once I started my vista machine, It beeped at me! No worries however...
Just power off your machine, then press enter twice, and you'll get back
to your Windows Environment.
I'll be sending this info off to the developer of Eamon Deluxe, and will
also be adding this info to the Eamon V I P web site (still in beta,) and
will be working on that for most of the day.

Take care all!

hmmm I wouldn't change drivers, what does it do to screenreaders, at any rate I
wouldn't go mangling your systtem just for one game.
It does make sence though old dos qbasic only supported standard ega, vga, mono
and cga screens.
It makes me wander why they still used dos for this game, really they should
use windows console at least.

All it does, is it will reset your display settings back to 800 by 600,
however you can jump back to the settings you wish by visiting the control
panel.

And sadly, this has to be done for any older DOS program that uses the
command.com
service.
The only other option besides that one, is using DosBox
from:
http://www.dosbox.com/--
which by the way, I have never used.
Hope this clears up everything.

Hi trenton.

while I have no problems running Eamon Delux on my Xp machine, i do however
have one issue you might be able to help me with.

YFor some odd reason, hal cannot interact with the Eamon text when running
in full screen mode, so it's necessary to play in a window.

this is absolutely fine, accept that the ends of a couple of lines get cut
off the right side of the window.

i've tried all ways I can think of, playing with the font, playing with the
window size, playing with the text buffering, but whatever i do, a couple of
words are stil missing from the ends of long lines in the eamon text.

Sinse you mention running the game on a window in Vista, i wondered if you'd
come up against the same issue, and could perhaps give advice, sinse
apart from this everything is fine.

Hello dark,
The installer does work with the instructions I gave out earlier, and as I
said, they worked successfully, however at least on my vista machine, the
installer for some reason will not read for my sake. Window-eyes and NVDA
will not read it, neither will system access do to the graphic on the screen
I think. I wonder if there is a way to bypass the screen, and just have it
automattically install.

ok, I was finally able to run it.
However, its going quite slow. And so far, the only way to read the text is

still working with it myself.

Re: [Audyssey] Eamon Deluxe, Successful On Windows Vista!

2008-11-16 Thread dark

Hi Trenton.

Hmmm that's odd. I find once I press alt enter to return from fullscreen to
window, things are fine apart from the cutting off text issue I mentioned.

this is just running the Eamon.bat file by pressing enter on it in windows
explorer, not trying to run directly from the command prompt (I can't
actually remember how to get the command prompt up anyway in windows xp,
;D).

when going to, or exiting from the main hall, ie, whenever the first main
menue appears, the game goes back to running fulscreen , so it's necessary
to prrress alt enter again, --- but this isn't a problem.

I've been considdering putting together an E-mail for the Eamon delux dev,
requesting some vi related changes.

thus far I've got the following:

1: Ability to set the game to display text correctly in a window so as to
work with hal.

2: use of greater than sign as menue marker as an alternative to the text
highlighting that's currently used.

3: illimination of flashing text on first startup screen.

I know a full windows port would be nice, but my feeling is the fewer
changes we ask for, the more likely to get things fixed we are.

it'd be really good if we could get Eamon working though, sinse some of the
games look interesting, and I like the idea of a more violent, hack and
slash type of text adventure to play from time to time.
