[Audyssey] Fallthrough item handling annoyence?

2009-01-10 Thread dark
Hi

On the one hand I'm enjoying the game, on the other the carrying capacity
bit is driving me up the wall#!

I've died of hunger or thirst numerous times sinse it simply takes me too many
command to drop all my belongings, take my food or canteen from my burro, drink
or eat it, and pick everything up again!

it's really annoying as I've been to some great places! At the moment I'm
looking for a way to get a silver amulet, sinse that seems to be the next step,
but other than chopping up peasants there's no way I can think of getting
it.

It's also mildly irritating to have to travel to a location just to see what's
there (admittedly the traveling being fun), then having to go to a random
location and pick up items, eg my cape and two extra canteens which I
bought to traverse the desert, then after I determined I really couldn't go
into the desert until I'd got some other stuff (sinse i kept dying of
exhaustion), have them take up carrying capacity, --- which even on a burrow
seems remarkably limited when I'm visiting many places.

I'll percevear though, sinse I really want to get enough money for a flyr, and
I'd deffinately like to go to more dungeons, sinse other than slavhos, the only
other place I found was the cave in forod, which seemed impossible to get
out of, even when I only went one direction and retraced my steps. This was why
I bought the navaid, but it doesn't seem to help there.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Fallthrough item handling annoyence?

2009-01-10 Thread Shadow Dragon
As a general rule of thumb I rarely if ever let my hunger drop below 3 or 4,
to solve just this problem. I have to wonder what all you're carrying
though, since with a knife, spear, bow and 10 arrows, battle armor and a
sword, along with several lesser items, I generally only need to drop my
spear and sometimes my knife to retrieve a full canteen. There's also
another way to marginally solve this problem while moving along the
roadways, you can stop at the inns if you're not hurting for cash and order
food there. The innkeeper will lay out a feast and once ordered, you can eat
and drink infinitely until you're stomach is full and your thirst quenched.

As for the silver amulet. Hmm. I'm having a lot of trouble remembering where
to get that one. I remember where to get the weyring and the gold amulet,
but I haven't played the game in so long that the gold, silver and bronze
rings, as well as bronze and silver amulets are avoiding me. Have the
warriors mensioned anything about them? It might jog my memory a bit to hear
some of the tips again if you're looking for help retrieving anything.

Re: [Audyssey] Fallthrough item handling annoyence?

2009-01-10 Thread dark

Hi.

I don't actually know what the problem is, but I can hold barely any items
in hand at once.

If I'm holding a sword, lamp, flint, knife 20 ralls, 5 salve and a navaid,
(imho the basic dungeon going kit), I can't hold much food in hand at all,
much less my canteen.

Imho the game would've done really well from an item such as a napsack for
carrying just 7 lb food and a full canteen, from which you could instantly
use the drink and eat commands in any locale so long as you had water and
food left in it, that would really speed things up.

I've found the ring maker in forod who exchanges rubies for rings, and
have been told that a bronze ring is the key to thon, but haven't been told
anything else as yet, I suppose if I can get another ruby somehow I'll try
that.

The only thing about amulets I've been told is that The silver way touches
many setlements where as The gold way starts at targ but i'm not sure
what either of these mean as yet.

But there are stil places I haven't been yet so there's more to find, -
hopefully.

I'm hoping a where ring will let me cross areas like the desert more easily
(where I died despite having 3 canteens of water and lots of food on my
burro), I'm also planning to buy a flyr when I get the cash but am stil
rather short, which is another reason I want to get into another
dungeon.

speaking of dungeons, I do have a direct question. I tried The cave in
forod, but not only got no reading at all from mmy odometer but also didn't
seem to go in a streight line even! I walked forward for a bit and actually
found a sil ikon, but then walking backwards I couldn't get out at all which
was annoying!

Oh well, I'll try again, I was just rather frustrated.

Beware the Grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Fallthrough item handling annoyence?

2009-01-10 Thread Shadow Dragon
You need a backpack, it sounds like. There's no real reason to take money
into a dungeon, just FYI. My basic dungeon crawling kit generally goes as
thus:

Weapons: Sword, spear, knife, bow and at least 10 arrows.
Food and Drink: At least 1 canteen, and 20 pounds of food. It'll all fit
into your backpack along with the arrows, I believe.
Misc: Flint, a lamp, one bottle of lamp oil, 5 ounces of salve, and any
other light on-hand items like amulets or rings.

I believe the backpacks are sold in Orn. They can hold quite a bit, and if
I'm remembering right that shouldn't overburden your character. If there's
something valuable down in the dungeon, I generally leave what supplies I
can down in the room where it was, and haul the items out to my burrow, then
retrieve the supplies.

The dungeon on Forod seems to have no real direct relation to the game. I'm
thinking it was either an incomplete dungeon tossed in and forgotten or a
dungeon put in as an afterthought for no real purpose other than to hide
treasure. It's a little tricky, but you can retrieve some of the treasure
from it with a bit of luck. The sign seems to hint that if you move in one
direction for long enough you'll eventually get back to the entrance.

As for crossing the desert, I'll save you the time and frustration, and I'm
sure you'll thank me for this later, but don't bother. It's a very, very
long haul, I believe it took me 6 full canteens and at least 150 pounds of
food to get across and some very careful planning, and there's nothing over
there. At all. Most of the desert is just empty coordinates with not even
hunting or desert warriors to break up the manotany. It does have its
purposes though, which I won't give away.

Also, I just remembered something about the silver amulet. There is a way to
get it without killing peasants, in fact I'm not sure if you can ever get it
from killing a peasant, it could be a random chance or it could just be a
taunt to get you to kill peasants and lose honor. You seem to always lose
the trinket after slaughtering anyone carrying one. If you want me to give
you a hint on wear to find it, let me know. That one was kind of frustrating
to find as well even with the hint I got from a warrior, but its workable
and necessary.

Hi.

I do actually have a backpack (it was one of the ways I initially made cash
while hunting, but I stil seem to have to drop everything to take food or my
canteen out of my pack.

It's just the amount of typing and turns lost that is plain annoying,
as I said, it killed me in the desert.

I'll try forod cave again, Though imho it's verry irritating (not to
say illogical), that you can't get out by moving in one direction and back,
but i hope it doesn't take too long getting out sinse I'm not sure if I can
carry the ikon and enough supplies, - again, something which would be
nicely fixed by automatically being able to cary 8 lb food and one canteen.

It's a real shame the source is lost, sinse this really does spoil the game
imho.

A silver amulet hint would I think help, - though it's probably in one
of the places I just haven't been to yet such as ishon (where I'm heading
now).

One thing I do like about eamon is it's really short commands and
abbreviations, - which even existed in the early 80's versions, for
instance just pressing enter to repeat the current turn, typing a gob to
attack a goblin or eat food etc. Something of this sort in fallthrough,
or the ability to write macros would really improve the game. But again,
sadly lost source code, even if the game could be altered.

Hi Dark,
Perhaps this is just me, but I haven't ever noticed much of the item
handling difficulties you describe. I keep all my ralls and food and such
in a sack, and only take out what I need at the time. Granted, I haven't
progressed quite as far as you have, it seems, but still, I don't have much
trouble.

As for the silver amulet, I can help with this.

You can get the silver amulet by being especially cheritable towards

dungeons or elsewhere to get it too.

Best,
Zack.
