[Audyssey] Going to be picking up the Logitech F 510 that everyone's been recommending

2011-04-12 Thread Ron Kolesar
Hi To one and all.
Like the subject states.
I'm going to be picking up the Logitech F 510 USB hand controller like
everyone has been enjoying.
I picked up the Logitech F710 unit and I couldn't get it to work. Plus, I
had to hold down on the force feedback button so that the force feedback
feature would work at that wasn't any fun.
So since everyone has been recommending the logitech F 510 I thought that I
too would pick it up to test it out with the hand to ear games and TDV.
For those using it can you use it with Three D Velocity and Blast Chamber
from Blind software , for starters.
To bad we can't find the major USB handheld controllers and see which hand
to ear product they'll work with and which one's they won't. And which
one's have force feedback and which ones do not as well.
I'm using Win 7 and a 64 bit processor and roomer has it that Windows is
forcing you to use the genarick force feed back instead of the force
feedback that comes with the USB controllers.
Will keep you all in the loop.

2011-04-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ron,

Well, like I said before I haven't noticed any problems with the unit,
but then again I only have a 32-bit system running Windows 7. So
things might work differently on the newer 64-bit systems. I just
don't know about that.

However, as a game developer I'd like to know what you find out. One
of the things I'm strongly thinking about is switching over to XInput
for game controller support. That way I can support the XBox 360
controllers as well as provide support for things like the Logitech
F510 using the newer APIs. That may make a diference on newer
platforms like Windows 7 which has a version of DirectX far newer than
that of XP by default.

Re: [Audyssey] Going to be picking up the Logitech F 510 that everyone's been recommending

2011-04-12 Thread Ron Kolesar
Tom, I have some sad news to report.
I'm going to ask for some help from my fellow blind gamers who like myself
are looking to untie themselves from the keyboard as well.
Would you agree or disagree with the following?
We're looking for something with around fifteen to twenty function buttons,
two sticks and of course force feedback for the newer up coming hand to ear
flight simulators and the hand to ear games.
The place that my dad just came back from their controllers had only seven
buttons on them if you were lucky.
The controllers were for the game consoles and not for a PC.
I'm going to try and do some research like I always do when I'm looking for
something.
But I think I speak for everyone from this list when I say that none of us
like shopping through a catalog.
Because unless we have it in our hand to physically look at the device we're
looking for we can't see the unit.
For myself, I like to be able to stress test a device. But most of the time
anymore a company wants a restocking fee.
Because passing accurate info is tricky anymore, I won't pass a
recommendation to this list or to anyone unless I've had a chance to play
with and or test out a unit so that I can give my opinion good or bad about
a product.
We're also going to be looking for a USB controller that will handle the new
windows and or cross playing platforms as well.
I throw this out to this list because it is a list for blind gamers to try
and help out one another.
Also for myself, I haven't been playing games because of some serious health
issues which a trusted few know about.
But when I play something, I look for something as real as possible.
So let's all pull our resources together and find a USB handheld unit that
we might be able to use. I thank you all. Ron and four pawed game cheater
Leader Dog Boz who states that having four paws beats only having two hands
all of the time. Fellow game player Ron Kolesar

Re: [Audyssey] Going to be picking up the Logitech F 510 that everyone's been recommending

2011-04-12 Thread dark

My x arcade stick cost me about 70 pounds or about 120 dollars.

Yes, this is expensive, but sinse a bog standard joypad goes for about 30 it
wasn't too bad, and my stick does come with the lifetime guarantee.

Pluss as I said, if I want to use it on another console it will just take a
fiver or so for the adapter.

Beware the grue!

Hi Ron,

My reply:

Well, to be honest I really haven't seen anything like that around. At
least nothing I can afford. From what I've seen the average joystick
in the $25 to $50 range has between 10 and 12 buttons, duel thumb
sticks, and perhaps a POV hat. Something like you are describing would
be in the $99 and up catagory. Since I can't afford anything like that
I haven't looked too closely into those kinds of controllers. I do
well enough to purchase something like the Logitech F510 which seems
to meet all of my personal needs anyway.

The thing is if you can use button combos you probably don't need 15
to 20 buttons anyway. What I'm looking into doing if there is demand
for it is to be able to setup a modifier button which allows you to
perform multiple actions with the same button. For instance, normally
button 1 might be the fire button. However, if button 7 is a modifier
button and is held down while pressing button 1 it will speak ammo
instead. So although you might have 10 buttons with a modifier button
you can asign 18 actions to that joystick. Considerably more actions
if you have a secondary modifier button etc. So 20 buttons isn't
really necessary all things considered.

Cheers!
