Well I can't help with the Frotz or tads part, though I will note that kerkerkruip and some other glulks titles are very rpg like if they will run with ios. However for something with lots of quests and good mechanics on Ios, Your game is king of dragon pass. Also, Adventure to Fate battle arena is having a major access update that's just being cleared by apple. The game doesn't have much by way of story, just lots of fights, but plenty of mechanics to play with, different classes and races to play who all have slightly different stratogy, item crafting and lots of other fun. I'll post more when the update arrives (i might even try a casting of the pod), but that should definitely be something good for Ios, even if it is lacking in story. Al the best, Dark. There is always more to know, more to see, more to learn. The world is vast and wondrous strange and there are more things benieth the stars than even the archmaesters of the citadel can dream. - Original Message - From: Devin Prater r.d.t.pra...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, July 01, 2015 3:49 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] chess was Re: info AudioGames Game Engine Well, I'm kinda stuck in games as it were. I never said all games were that bad. The quentin games have a good engine I havn't hit it much online. the rs stuff is good to but unlike the quentin engine say with 1000 miles rules for if you are actually stupped and trapped are not inforced so you can still trap even if you are cornered and it takes out the frustration of playing especially when you have a human opponent. I have not played the all in play engine though of late. I still play the old kitchensinc games when I have a few minutes. At 02:37 a.m. 20/06/2015, you wrote: hey shawn I'm the same way. As it turned out it wasn't as simple or as straight forward as I thought. Interesting enough I personally did not find learning programming to be that hard. I know we are all different, some learn things easier than others, but by far learning to develop games was actually easier than other aspects of the process. There are a lot of problems I had not even imagined or considered when I decided to specialize in game programming. Things that were in my opinion much more difficult than the programming required to write a game or accessible product. One issue I see as a problem for audio game developers is advertising. Sure there are a few hundred blind customers on Audyssey and the Audio Games Forum, but the reality is they are just a small minority of the thousands perhaps millions of blind people world wide who are not connected with any audio gaming venue. Let's face it advertising via TV and radio can get extremely expensive. So expensive that it would take incredible financing to market a product that way. News Papers are a cheaper method of advertising games and other products, but there we have the problem of its not an accessible means of communication from an audio game

Thanks Dark, I'll pursue this further. I am interested enough, both as a blind gamer myself, and as a designer in the challenges, that I don't want to totally give this up, but right now, I have several other irons in the fire, and this did not turn out quite as simple a situation as I was hoping. A lot of the complexity of coding such a beast would be your definition of what Mahjong is. There's apparently a number of different variations ranging from relatively simple to immensely complex. Our card game Rummy is based on it. I studied a couple of simpler multi-player versions, and had a simpler solitaire set up explained to me by my wife. The game's setup as a solitaire game presents some unique challenges in an audio environment, having multiple levels, some of which you can see only partially that all must be displayed more or less simultaneously. In the traditional games, the challenge is more one of mastering the rule sets well enough to create a game that accurately reproduces the game play. Warning: I did not investigate American Mahjong extensively because it appears much simpler and more derivative from the original versions. That said, it might be a way to progress. If I were to attempt it, with the help of my pet coder (hi Aaron! that's you), I'd lean toward doing a multi-player version based on the Hong Kong old style rules I studied. They seemed simple enough to master relatively easily, complex enough to be interesting, and different enough from card games to present a unique challenge. That said, I don't see it happening any time soon. I need to get a Mahjong set and experiment with it before I could design an AI that played even reasonably well. The spoonbill games do tend to be very well designed and put together, even their simpler ones like mastermind with lots of random features etc. I haven't particularly got into their chess challenge game sinse I don't find I can play chess looking at a board square by square but would want the hole board in front of me, but I am rather fond of their whist and cribbage games. Their hearts is good too though I can usually wipe the floor with the computer on that one :D. Beware the grue! Shredder Chess for the iPhone is very accessible. I use it extensively. The only thing that I find that you cannot do using Voice-Over is to set up and play from a position. As for the Arkangles software, the Elite is the one that I would prefer. It is better than the Advanced. Speaking of chess, for those interested, there are two chess events at a voice chat site, and signing up is free and pain less. Check out www.Out-Of-Sight.net --- Be positive! Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
In terms of the physical boards, I have a peg type one, with the points on the black pieces. Mine is pretty big so keep it set up, but I have heard there are travel sets for the blind as well. I’ve never been any good at the computer version fo chess games, since I’m used to looking at the board to find where the pieces are. Blind chess sets can be rather interesting to try and play with sighted people, because sometimes the pieces don’t look anything like a standard set. I did have someone try and mark up a normal set once, but it didn’t work too well, since it wasn’t easy to distinguish between the black and white squares and the bumpons kept falling off the appropriate pieces. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. You say: I’ve never been any good at the computer version fo chess games, since I’m used to looking at the board to find where the pieces are. I ask: So, why not use your board and men, making the moves spoken by the computer program? Then you can scope out your own board to determine your move and enter it into the computer program? That's what I do, and it works perfectly. If the machine tells you to move a knight to f6, make the move on your board. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
My personal advice would be to get a tactile chess set (sometimes called a braille chess set, even though they don't have braille on them), and start playing live against a human. To explain these are sets where there are holes in each square on the board and the peaces are on pegs so you can put your mits on the board without knocking them over, one side (usually the white, though not always), has pins on the top to tell them apart. I'm not sure where you'd get one from in your part of the world, they tend to be sold by the same places who sell braille cards, dice etc. Personally, while I understand chess notation, I find it near impossible to hold spacial information about the board in mind without the board. I want to put my hand on the white knight and my other finger on the square it will move to, and then put my fingers (and to a very much lesser extent my disfunctional eyeballs), on the surrounding squares and see if that move will be a bad or good one. This is why I've never got on with the various audio Chess games like BGChess challenge, Kchess elite etc. Sinse while they have some good audio overviews for the board, fundamentally you are still just getting the information square by square, and I don't find myself able to old enough spacial information about the board in mind for that sort of overview to really help me or make it possible for me to play chess. Of course this is me, and I will freely admit my spacial coordination is pretty cruddy, (even in mobility I tend to substitute routes and land mark memory instead of working out where I am spacially), you might be different though I'm guessing by your comment you could be in a similar position, hence my suggestion of a tactile chess set. Well the Hadley School for the Blind offers two free chess courses, Chess for Beginners and Chess: Principles and Strategies. You even get a free chess set with the first course which is yours to keep after you complete it. Each course has I believe six lessons, each with an accompanying assignment. The chess set is really nice as well. I still have mine from eight years ago, though I don't play so much these days. I agreeDark. Tat's wy I don't play onlie, even though you can get a free year of membership to an online Chess community for completing both of the two Ches courses offered by the Hadley School here in the US. Their chess set, which is included with their beginner's course, is really nice. It not only has the pegs and holes for easy piece placement and the pins denoting white and black pieces (in this case I believe it's the black ones), but the board is also brailled. The white side says wite and the other black, but the ranks and files are also denoted with letters and numbers. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
that sounds like a really good chess set bryan. Sinse the old one I used to own pretty much died due to lack of use (several peaces depegged), I tried buying a new one from the Rnib however i was quite disappointed. The peaces are tiny, however instead of black and white it's more like dark brown and slightly lighter brown (the contrast is quite horrible), and the peaces are extremely small and lumpy. I tried that charlse with K chess elite, however I think I must have misscounted moving one of my opponent's peaces sinse each game I tried I'd get a ways through and then the computer would tell me to move something I thought was an empty square or the like. Although it is pricy, you can get a very well made tactual chess set from www.thechesshouse.com The pieces are tournament sized. I believe the set costs around $100. --- Be positive! I'm not sure where you'd get one from in your part of the world, they tend to be sold by the same places who sell braille cards, dice etc. Personally, while I understand chess notation, I find it near impossible to hold spacial information about the board in mind without the board. It's always a good idea to double check by using your arrow keys to review the board in cases like this. You can sometimes hear b7 when it actually said d7 or e7. Another very good chess program that is speech friendly is Shredder Chess. You can get it from www.shredderchess.com and you can also get it for an iDevice as well. Do a search in the app store. Re: [Audyssey] chess and the blind
Keith, There's two forms of notation. Algebraic notation is easier to fathom. In algebraic the files are lettered a through h from White's queen's rook right to white's King's rook. The ranks are then numbered from 1 to 8 counting from white's first rank. So a move of pawn e2-e4 is king's pawn from 2 to 4. As to playing, there are, or were several board game producers for the blind producing peg style chessboards for the blind that used alternating raised and depressed squares to represent the color, and that had pins or bumps on the black pieces to distinguish them from the white. I have such a board and it works well as you can look at board position without messing up the pieces. I hope this helps, Jeremy --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Keith, There's a lot of people who have gone through that area and been able to do the chess quests, but quite frankly it's not simple. It's considered a 'very difficult' quest, and most of the people who have done it sat down and figured out what the boards are supposed to look like and played with the notation for a while to get it right. what gave me the clue was being told that you need to type the word open before each move. So open e2 e4 or open kxp or whatever. If you get really stuck jayde wrote a completely walkthrough of the quest on audiogames.net giving all the moves needed, though once I got how the notation worked I was able to go from there and figure the rest out, it was getting the game to accept the commands that seemed the problem for me. To register you just need to buy the registration tickit from the receptionist. Apparently according to dentin it has to be in letter notation, so I'll try that next. Beware the grue! Hi, If you try something like open move where move is in letter notation, that might work, although since I've never done it myself I'm not sure, and then you might try order thing move too. Re: [Audyssey] Chess stratigies
Have you checked into the correspondence courses on how to play chess at www.hadley.edu yet? Although you said that you do know the game, here's why I suggest this option. I knew the game, but learned from a terrible player. I was tired of always losing to people. I heard about the two chess courses offered by Hadley, so took the first one just for kicks, thinking that what I needed was a new beginning or a different way to think about the game. The first chess course, for beginners, gave me a different outlook on the game, plus, a very nice chess set was included as part of the course material. Once you complete the course, you can keep the course material and the chess set, which is a very nice one. Then, I enrolled in the course of advanced tactics and strategies, which was a big, big help in improving my game. The cost cannot be beat, as there is no charge for either course. The material from both courses was adapted from a book written by a Grand Master of the game. They are a great reference source for the future, too, and you keep them after completion of the courses. You also, upon completion of the advanced course, receive a two year membership to the United States Braille Chess Association, which has a small library of chess books you can borrow, as well as an Email list through which you can challenge others in games for fun or in tournaments, as well as online in voice chat sessions. Based on my own experiences, I think that this is a very good way for anyone interested in chess to either get started or to improve. --- Shepherds are the best beasts! - Original Message - From: Ramy Moustafa moshtaqlealga...@gmail.com To: 'Gamers Discussion list' gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2010 8:01 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Chess stratigies Thanks allot Sir. It is only a 6 lesson correspondence course, and you can get the material in either braille or on audio cassettes, along with a brailled book of diagrams to use during the lessons. Plus, you receive a very good chess set adapted for blind players that you can keep, along with the course materials for future reference if you finish the course. I don't know their URL offhand, but you should be able to find it using a search engine such as www.google.com if nobody else can give it to you on this list. Anyway, briefly, bishops, rooks, (also known as castles), and Knights, the King, the Queen and pawns capture pieces by moving to the squares on which the enemy piece rests. Pieces that are jumped by a Knight remain on the board. Check is when your king will be captured on your opponent's next move unless you prevent it by blocking the path or moving the King out of harm's way, or by capturing the attacking piece. If you can do none of these things and cannot prevent your King from being taken, it is checkmate and the game is over. Re: [Audyssey] chess help
Hi Shirley. have you got the Bg chess challenge game from spoonbill software? not only does it play chess, but it comes with a document entitled how to play chess which explains all the rules and maneuvers, pluss I believe the game has some degree of in game help if i remember rightly. You can either download it from Tom's site on http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/spoonbill-games/ or alternatelyou can send an E-mail requesting the game to Ian humphries who produces it (all his games are free and use ms sapi to be self-voicing). You can find out all about his games, and his E-mail address on http://www.omninet.net.au/~irhumph/blindgamers.htm to be honest, even if you just download bg chess from Tom's hosting site, --- Ian humphries does rather like E-mails from people sinse he likes to personally know who plays his games, pluss then he can put you on the mailing list to know about new releases if you wish. To answer your question, a rook, knight, bishop etc simply takes out the piece it lands on. As for a knight, no it does not take out the piece it jumps; this is not checkers Grin. About check and checkmate: when your king is in check, it can be captured. This means that you must immediately either move the king out of check or some how move a piece in the way, as your king *cannot* be captured. If, however, you cannot get out of check, this is considered checkmate and grants your opponent victory. Re: [Audyssey] chess help
I think your best bet would be to try the course from the Hadley school for the blind, Chess For Beginners. [Audyssey] chess game for the Pac Mate
Has anyone gotten the chess program to work on a Pac Mate with firmware 4.61? I cannot get the game to speak moves, nor can I successfully convey my move to the program. I've tried entering e4 as well as e2e4 with no success. Also, what is the cost of the game? The demo only allows 5 games to be played. Any assistance with this game will be appreciated. Hello there, Have you played KChess v4 Elite? I downloaded the demo and am having major problems trying to figure out how to use it. Am I supposed to use the Jaws cursor mode to get to stuff or stay in the PC Cursor mode to get to info? Is there enough help for a blind user in the help menu to figure out how to use this game or do I need to go to the web site and find a tutorial there? thanks for any help u can offer. Re: [Audyssey] Chess Games
One of the best tools for the blind to learn chess that I have come across is the Hadley School. They offer a correspondence course in either braille or on audio cassettes for beginners. After you complete this course, if interested, they offer a more advanced course in the same formats. Each comes with a set of braille diagrams as part of the study material. You learn at your own pace, and the instructor is patient and friendly. The courses come with everything you need, even a chess set adapted for blind players that is very nice with the course for beginners. After completing these courses, you can keep the study materials for future reference. Offhand, I don't recall the web address, although I'm certain that you can find it using your favorite search engine. --- If guns cause crime, pencils cause misspelled words. - Original Message - From: william lomas lomaswill...@googlemail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 9:18 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Chess Games I am currently learning the game of chess, it sounds a fascinating game to get in to. I'm not sure what you mean by chess braille, I once read a chess stratogy book on tape, and used to note my moves down on tape as I mentioned, - Eg, queen takes rook on felix 7, there probably is a standardized way of writing it, but I'm not sure what it would be. generally speaking, while I like reading braille lables on things etc, i do much more stuff on tape or through synths because it's quicker, and usually reserve braille books for the train anyway. beware the Grue!
