Hello everyone. First I am new to the list and tend to be

The topic of good muds always interests me.
After years of trying several different muds including alter aeon
I finally settled on one called bat mud.
I didn't pick it for friendly players and I definitely didn't
pick it for hack and slash or even for questing. I picked it
because of its great crafting and herb and merchant system.
At first batmud doesn't seem to be friendly however with a few
setting changes with the set command on the mud itself it can be
very speech friendly. First you want to type set text only to
on. After this you can basically change whatever settings you
like. set show is what you use to see the settings, what they
are currently set at and their numbers. For inmance set 24 on I
think is text only to on.
Really that is the only command you really absolutely need
 although others are helpful.
I prefer batmud. However I have played aardwolf, Materia Magica,
Discworld, Medievia, alter aeon, Avatarmud, the Iron Reaealms
 muds.
All are good and all are aessible to the blind. Most have
 friendly players.
Really it depends not so much on accessibility as on what your
 looking for.
I have tried several muds that say they have a great crafting
system only to find out it was very minimal compared to batmud.
I could go on here why I don't like the other games I mentioned
above but that may make you think they are bad games and that is
 simply not true.
Anyway one thing does bother me however. And in no way am I
faulting anyone. But it is this idea that some muds are more
accessible to the blind than others.
This always bothers me. Because every mud I have ever played has
 always been fully completely accessible.
Some of them now such as alter aeon, aardwolf, materiamagica and
discworld have settings specifically to help blind people out a
bit. But in most cases those settings are already there
available for your changing as you like. There usually is no
need to change the port you connect too or such like.
I fear that some games have made it in a way to easy for blind
players. Sure it is nice to have everything set up when you
first enter the game but it doesn't teach you how to change
 settings and the like.
I always prefer to change my own settings the way I want. Maybe
that is why I never stuck with alter aeon. That and the fact I
just do not like killing things all the time which is also why I
didn't stick with most of the other games above.
All muds are accessible unless they are graphical. you only need
 to figure them out.
And no matter what pick a mud to your interests and desires.
Really only topmudsites and mudconnect can help you out there.
Advice from other people helps yes. But ultimately just trying
out different muds that fit your interest can really help you
 out.
I probably should not say this. But medievia's author has said
that they will not make medievia accessible to the blind.
First I want to say they don't have too. But I would stay away
from medievia. The author never sticks to their word and all
they want is more players. They claim medievia is the best game
out there and growing but it isn't true. Also people on there
can player kill you for no reason. And a lot of them don't stick
to pk rules that are set up. Medievia is definitely good if you
prefer hack and slash. But given the choice if I were you I
would pick alter aeon over medievia any day.
No offence to the alter aeon programmerofswith but they aren't
the only accessible mud out there. Nor in my opinion are they
the best. But I have different interests that alter aeon
 provides.
Pick what you like. Find a mud you like and enjoy. Only then
will you be content with the mud you have picled.

Re: [Audyssey] good muds I have used

2012-05-24 Thread Jessica and Trish the Golden Dog
Hi. Ok I will do my best do explain batmud setup a little more.
I have forgotten a lot of it as it has been a while since I
created a character.
First, you are only allowed two characters on batmud and only one
can be logged in at a time. So pick the name you really like.
Don't worry so much about race and such. You can always
reincarnate to something else.
Over the time I have played I have heard ranger is a very good
new player guild. They would pick the nomad background and then
probably a giant cyclops or the like as your race. Then ask
someone either on newbie channel or in the ranger guild to help
you to that guild or to give the whereami coordinates. It helps
a lot if you explain your blind and use a screen reader and can't
see the map.
Some batmud map sites searched for on google you can right click
on a link and then copy it to the clipboard and then paste it
from the clipboard to get the whereami coordinates for an area.
Once you know those coordinates you can basically get to that
location.
whereami is a command you can type to find out your current
coordinates. This is really helpful when your trying to get some
where.
All major cities, ferries and areas have these on map sites
online or you can ask help in game explaining why you need the
help.
Batmud is not a game you learn fast you must take your time.
Here are some commands I hope will help or how to find out these
commands.

I already explained the whereami command.
Having brief on always helps. That way you only look at a room
when you want in the usual typing l way.
Do set show to list your settings options. The first one you
want to set is text-only to on. So find that option and then
type set number of toxt only to on. For example if text-only is
24 type set 24 on.
I also set everything that will help with keeping the amount of
text down to a minimum. Really a lot of it after set text-only
on is really just personal preference. Text only gets rid of the
crazy map and makes moving around a lot easier.
I usually set lines to a higher number than 25 but again this is
totally personal preference.
Most chat channels are off by default which is really nice and
beside most of them aren't worth having on anyway. Some people
on there don't seem to have good manners sometimes. They call it
fun I call it annoying.
Really all you have to do once you turn text-only on and set any
orr compands you wish to set is just talk on the newbie channel
find friends and enjoy.
Oh if you battle I turn a lot of battle stuff off. But again
totally personal preference.
The command you need for that is battle. Just review your screen
for proper syntax.
If you do set followed by a number it will exlpain what that
number does I think and what it is set at.
Nice thing about all this set up is it is done once and then your
free to do whatever you like.
I don't play there much anymore as entombed really is fascinating
me and my life is just busy otherwse.
Again batmud isn't a go fast speed up the levels game. But you
should never ever get bored. And there is enough to interest
anyone of most types of interests. If you like hack and slash it
is there. If you like exploring tons to explore. If you like
crafting and making things and picking plants you can do that
too.
You can go it alone or group and you can reincarnate if you don't
like your guild and background and race.
Text only being set to on via the set compand is your key to
aessibility.

Jessica

Alteraeon would be my first recommendation. Great class system, friendly

I disagree with that heartily. It's in no way too hard. If
anything, the higher levels are when the game gets better, as
it's actually a challenge rather than just repeated runs at an
area until you level.

Hi Lindsay,

To begin with try Alter Aeon. Its a great mud, is very accessible using
a number of clients, and has lots of quests, monsters, etc. You can
connect by pointing your mud client to the following:

address: alteraeon.com
port: 3000

Cheers!

[Audyssey] good muds I have used

2012-05-23 Thread Jessica and Trish the Golden Dog
Hello everyone. First I am new to the list and tend to be
long-winded and just reading mostly.

Jessica

I have been checking lusternia out, it seems like a cool in depth mud. som
ethings are different then what I am used to but it does certainly sound
intreaguing. I would have to get used to being able to be pk'd any where
though. lol but, I created a char named wynjir but haven't really done
anything yet. I will try when I have more time to play around.

I too prefer a mud that's easy to play, and based mostly on killing and
requires no accessive thoughts and other complicated things.
My idea is that, if I want social interaction and realism, I would just
get out of the house. So, since killing is something I, we, don't get to
do in real---at least not that often I hope, it is my main focus during
gaming.
This is not to say that I do not enjoy RP, but too much of it make my

Also, some of these complex muds take so long to get into that one almost
needs a master's degree to play them well rofl.
So I guess I'm in the H and S camp, muds that allow me to log on, kill
something or, things, for half a hour, and log off without having to
think

about it till the next time I want to play- and for that, Aeon and
Cyberassault are great examples.
Well, as long as you don't get into the clan themes on Aeon, you would be
fine.
I used to enjoy the shadowrun muds, both awakened world and awake, but
then both muds required so much of me that I decided it was time to move

I still have bad dreams of the awake days where I had to sit in front of

For all the intellectual types out there, the greatest game out there is

Such is the way of all muds, no matter how advanced. From godwars2, the
most advanced mud I've ever seen, all the way down the line to your basic
diku, abyr and lp codebases, it all degenerates to the same thing in the
end. Even games like miriani and star conquest where the killing is
indirect, its all still grinding in my opinion. The difference in a lot of
gamers is that there's different levels of grinding that people can deal
with. Some people can play alter aeon all day and grind to their hearts
content, even though the combat is hardly descriptive at all and grinding
gets rather slow at higher levels. Some people need the more advanced
miriani to get their grinding fix and earn their place on a game. Me
personally, I generally don't like grinding in any form, but instead look
for well-described combat or attack skills, for example: New moon,
discworld, unofficial squaresoft mud. I also look for advanced mechanics,
godwars2, project bob, etc. Very, very few muds interest me for long, and
even the ones that do I get bored of eventually no matter how powerful I
get, hence my ripping of miriani a few days back. Almost any mud, provided
you've never played anything like it before, can start out good, but in
the end it all turns into the same thing after a while.

to

deal with behavior like that I'd go play some old godwars clones, or
godwars2 on a regular basis. At least on godwars you can't have
everything
you've ever worked for stolen because you don't feel like spending 3
hours

of your time moving around a sector while someone with billions and
billions of credits launches sectors full if interdictors and chases you
around in a BC, eventually calling in backup if they can't deal with you
on their own and overwhelming you with odds. The gameplay itself gets
tedius as well, you've got about 6 choices of activities, only 2 of
which

are worth doing and even those are tedius after a while. Yes these are
just my opinions, and no I won't be responding to

any defence of the mud, I played it for a couple months and thus believe
these opinions to be well-formulated. I have no problems with defending
what's mine in an uncontrolled environment, but I think its pushing the
limits of ridiculous when it takes you between an hour and a day to pull
off
said defense, and then people can't just drop it there and go find
something
better to do. Not to mension immature and petty actions like stranding
and
droid stealing are allowed, things that by all right 90% of people have
no
fair chance of defending against and for the most part aren't even
crippling
enough to be worth doing. It's just not that great of a game. I
personally

prefer a more controlled environment where solo play is more viable and
you're free to do your own thing whenever and wherever you want rather
than
socializing in a public area only to suddenly be grabbed by some loser
and

forced to spend 24 hours in his ship for no better reason than because he
can make you. But again,
these are just my opinions. Call it complaining if you want, but I for

give miriani a hard thumbs down.

Cyberassault is ok.
My thing is, i just don't like muds where the objective is kill kill kill.

I like MUDs where you can actually be your character, live a life, etc.

There's the newly upgraded cyberassault mud:
cyberassault.org - 1
It offers several planets, an everexpending area list and autoquest list,
and has one of the best gun/explosive system I've seen around- in my opinion
anyway.
I don't think it has an official soundpack, but I can always extract my own

I too prefer a mud that's easy to play, and based mostly on killing and
requires no accessive thoughts and other complicated things.
My idea is that, if I want social interaction and realism, I would just
get out of the house. So, since killing is something I, we, don't get to do
in real---at least not that often I hope, it is my main focus during gaming.
This is not to say that I do not enjoy RP, but too much of it make my head
hurts and tend to send me packing from the computer for hours...
Also, some of these complex muds take so long to get into that one almost
needs a master's degree to play them well rofl.
So I guess I'm in the H and S camp, muds that allow me to log on, kill
something or, things, for half a hour, and log off without having to think
about it till the next time I want to play- and for that, Aeon and
Cyberassault are great examples.
Well, as long as you don't get into the clan themes on Aeon, you would be
fine.
I used to enjoy the shadowrun muds, both awakened world and awake, but then
both muds required so much of me that I decided it was time to move on.
I still have bad dreams of the awake days where I had to sit in front of the
comp for 6 hours just to RP something through!

Hello: Perhaps the subject of this thread should be, mud-bashing. Muds
are, by enlarge, quite accessible. There are any number of mud and pure
telnet clients out there, and they are free to. They work quite well,
with only minor adjustments required, for screen readers. Muds provide a
text means of interaction with others, both sighted and blind, and friends
can be made on muds.

I, personally, enjoy the hackslash muds, especially those which allow a
character to grow. By character growth, I mean, in both stats and levels,
with a character becoming more and more powerful over time.

There are good muds out there depending upon a person's interest.
Although
the mud, as an internet passtime is becoming less popular, muds, in one
form
or another, will be around for some time to come, and the demise of the
mud,
in my humble opinion, will be a closing of a chapter which has allowed
blind

gamers to participate, with little modifications to software on an even
playing field with all mud players.

For all the intellectual types out there, the greatest game out there is
life---its full of puzzles, and there is no hackslash, except, perhaps,
if,,
one is in Iraq, or Afghanistan. or, perhaps, if one is in the real
world,

where the hackslash is, rather, intrinsic.

So, I guess, if one is looking for a good mud, it can be found on planet
earth where the telnet client, then, is us. No address or port number
is

required

I like a good hackslash mud for my relaxation: Its almost as
invigarating

as a good cup of coffee.

So, I am breaking the mold, so to speak. I like a good hackslash mud,
with

unlimited levels and (if possible), unlimitede stats.
Two good hackslash muds out there are:

telnet://dune.servint.com:6789

(which is Dune mud)

and the other is Dragon Swords mud, and if anyone is interested, I will
give

the link for that one. I have been on mud games since 1996 or late 1995,
and I used a shell account to get onto the internet. (muds were even
accessible as a fine form of entertainment then, also)

Thanks again, and hang in there hackslashers

Re: [Audyssey] good muds

2009-08-09 Thread Kellie and my lovable Lady J.
see, I don't mind a mud that has a lot of killing I am willing to do that.
However, I also want more substance then that. I mean, after a while, just
killing gets tedius and boring. I like to have a choice. If I am in the mood
for killing I can, but if I want to solve a puzzle or perform a quest I want
to have to ability to do that as well. I would really love a game with a
developing story line. One that changes depending on what the player base
contributes. one that may not necessarily have an end, since if it did you
couldn't continuely play. But, one that has more of a story line that isn't
so open ended. And from my experience, all muds are that way. As I said, I
like the epic quest fantasy things like ff or zelda, or lunar. Games I will
never have the opportunity to play. I do agree with you though, about some
muds being hard to get into b/c of how complex and stuff it is. That also is
a big reason why I don't et going. i will start a mud and then I don't feel
like trying to learn all the commands so stop. lol

Miriani might have its downsides, but it hardly ever goes down. Cosmos has

Re: [Audyssey] good muds

2009-08-08 Thread shaun everiss
my real reason of quitting miriani was because the pricing was just to damn
high.
I don't care about mudding really online gaming even less although I do dabble
in stuff, core exiles is one thing I keep up at least in short bursts.
Right now I am doing a rather hard mission so every 4 weeks I come back in and
battle for a few hours on it.
Eventually I hope to finnish mmy mission and get another.
if I get bored I may switch.
However thats a more controled type game.
At 12:59 p.m. 8/08/2009, you wrote:
I personally think miriani is lame. You spend three quarters of your time
fending off annoying, so-called space pirates who think they need to get in a
virtual pissing contest with anyone who blinks at them funny to prove a point,
or mess with someone just cause they feel like it. If I wanted to deal with
behavior like that I'd go play some old godwars clones, or godwars2 on a
regular basis. At least on godwars you can't have everything you've ever
worked for stolen because you don't feel like spending 3 hours of your time
moving around a sector while someone with billions and billions of credits
launches sectors full if interdictors and chases you around in a BC,
eventually calling in backup if they can't deal with you on their own and
overwhelming you with odds. The gameplay itself gets tedius as well, you've
got about 6 choices of activities, only 2 of which are worth doing and even
those are tedius after a while. Yes these are just my opinions, and no I won't
be responding to
any defence of the mud, I played it for a couple months and thus believe these
opinions to be well-formulated. I have no problems with defending what's mine
in an uncontrolled environment, but I think its pushing the limits of
ridiculous when it takes you between an hour and a day to pull off said
defense, and then people can't just drop it there and go find something better
to do. Not to mension immature and petty actions like stranding and droid
stealing are allowed, things that by all right 90% of people have no fair
chance of defending against and for the most part aren't even crippling enough
to be worth doing. It's just not that great of a game. I personally prefer a
more controlled environment where solo play is more viable and you're free to
do your own thing whenever and wherever you want rather than socializing in a
public area only to suddenly be grabbed by some loser and forced to spend 24
hours in his ship for no better reason than because he can make you. But again,
these are just my opinions. Call it complaining if you want, but I for one
give miriani a hard thumbs down.

2009-08-07 Thread Tristan B
I will be posting an email introductor-ing, as it were, the NEW Cosmos. In
Cosmos, we made alot of mistakes, that were very little at first, but slowly
affected the entire game.

The combat has been improved. We have a plot, and there are new ships. We
also have a new sound pack, thanks to Bryan Davis, one of our players.

To download the sound pack, or just browse the site, visit
http://trekgames.net.

Hope this helps,

Re: [Audyssey] good muds

2009-08-07 Thread Ryan Smith
Hi,
A person named zinc from the audiogames forum said the following
about Cosmos. It basically says what I hear many people say goes on at
Cosmos.:
[Start Message]
I would like to encourage you all not to play the MOO Cosmos. Some
reasons why I think this.
1) It's a Miriani clone.
2) The admins are terrible. One of them took a stun gun to my head!
3) They cheat. I stunned one of the admin guys player characters, and
I was put into a conference room until the time is up.
4) The website is poorly designed.
5) The owner is one of the most immature people I've ever come across.
[A possible insult removed]
[End of Message]

You can verify that here: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=3047

While I haven't spent lots of time since the beginning of Cosmos, I've
also heard from several people how buggy Cosmos is. Many things don't
work, lots of errors, it's unorganized. While Humanity MOO was
certainly a failure in terms of ideas, code wise there was hardly any
errors. This is why the core based of Humanity MOO was so good. A
small MOO I run myself, LearnMOO, is based off Humanity MOO core. We
haven't received one error relating to code we wrote.

Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] good muds

2009-08-07 Thread Shadow Dragon
I personally think miriani is lame. You spend three quarters of your time
fending off annoying, so-called space pirates who think they need to get in
a virtual pissing contest with anyone who blinks at them funny to prove a
point, or mess with someone just cause they feel like it. If I wanted to
deal with behavior like that I'd go play some old godwars clones, or
godwars2 on a regular basis. At least on godwars you can't have everything
you've ever worked for stolen because you don't feel like spending 3 hours
of your time moving around a sector while someone with billions and billions
of credits launches sectors full if interdictors and chases you around in a
BC, eventually calling in backup if they can't deal with you on their own
and overwhelming you with odds. The gameplay itself gets tedius as well,
you've got about 6 choices of activities, only 2 of which are worth doing
and even those are tedius after a while. Yes these are just my opinions, and
no I won't be responding to any defence of the mud, I played it for a couple
months and thus believe these opinions to be well-formulated. I have no
problems with defending what's mine in an uncontrolled environment, but I
think its pushing the limits of ridiculous when it takes you between an hour
and a day to pull off said defense, and then people can't just drop it there
and go find something better to do. Not to mension immature and petty
actions like stranding and droid stealing are allowed, things that by all
right 90% of people have no fair chance of defending against and for the
most part aren't even crippling enough to be worth doing. It's just not that
great of a game. I personally prefer a more controlled environment where
solo play is more viable and you're free to do your own thing whenever and
wherever you want rather than socializing in a public area only to suddenly
be grabbed by some loser and forced to spend 24 hours in his ship for no
better reason than because he can make you. But again, these are just my
opinions. Call it complaining if you want, but I for one give miriani a hard
thumbs down.
