Hi Thomas, Wow, certainly some news to me. About two years ago, Shane Davidson put Giftanum on his own website for download, along with the source code. I downloaded the game and read in the updated documentation that there were still some sound updates to make. I made those sound adjustments for him, repatched the installer, and sent it to Shane. Shane then contacted me, claiming that I had broken the source code. As it happened, I hadn't even touched the source code, and upon checking I found that the code would not run or compile either, claiming files, functions and variables to be missing. Shane then took the game down and informed me that he was no longer interested in developing it. Therefore I went to Jason, asked if I could take over, and he gave me the code for all three games - Self Destruct, Giftanum and Danger City. Since then I have been hosting the originals on my website until I could get the games updated, which I will admit took a lot of time to get to grips with Jason's coding methods. Then of course I start actually updating the thing I am switching languages, so I would have to do a whole rewrite anyway. So much for a wasted half year! *Grin*. Hi Damien, Cool. I just wanted to check, and I personally don't have a problem with you taking over Giftenum. You have the other XL Studios games anyway so it makes sense that the rights stay with you. In terms of Jason's code I have to agree with you. I've been programming for about 10 years, and his code was very messy. He was definitely not a very experienced programmer and his code litterally screamed amateure programmer. Hi Thomas, Well, to be honest everyone starts somewhere. I dread to think if I went back 5 years what my code looked like. Even now I am not very experienced with games programming. Yes I can make the odd utility in VB, but even then I've been having reports left right and centre regarding bugs that I can't seem to replicate. However, learning C++, I am right back to novice state. I feel humiliated to say that so far, after almost a month of trying to learn, I still can't even write a clean hello world program. Probably because of its extensive nature. In VB, I had to write it as a message box simply because I wasn't practising coding by drawing a window and saving an executable. So as you can imagine, writing a 3 liner in a message box to writing an 85 line version creating a window is a large jump. You have the other XL Studios games anyway so it makes sense that the rights stay with you. In terms of Jason's code I have to agree with you. I've been programming for about 10 years, and his code was very messy. He was definitely not a very experienced programmer and his code litterally screamed amateure programmer. Hi Damien, Smile. Yes, we all need to start somewhere. As it happens a while back I found some cds with some very old source code on it, code from my college days, and I was horrified when reading the source for some of those programs. It was obvious I didn't have a clue what I was doing, or I had an idea of what I was doing, but not quite sure how to write programs professionally yet. So we all have had our amateur days. I also understand what you are going through with C++. well jim kitchen has admitted some years back his code is not prity either. not sure if this is true still or not. I programmed in javascript and pascal. and in pascal I would go nice and fast forget to put capitals on var or something or forget somethingelse and my program was locking up, restart, restart, oh man where is that code, where is it. Hi Damien, Not that this is a big deal to me, but there appears to be a small conflict of interest regarding Giftenum. It was my understanding that Shane Davidson obtained the source for Giftenum from XL Studios, and he asked me a few months back if I'd take over the project and help him upgrade the game. I mentioned I would, but do to the length of time it is taking on Raceway and MOTA I've not found much time to do much with the game as yet. Now, you are saying you are taking over development. Did Shane or Jason ask you to take over the game, or was this something you decided to do yourself. Like I said it is no big deal to me, but I don't want us to end up writing two different versions of the game, each claiming rights to it, and then figuring out someone goofed up with the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing type of thing. Hi Hayden, A friend of mine took the game over some time back, and we were planning on rewriting and releasing it sometime in the future. how ever, I do believe i have the latest installer for the original Giftinum around here somewhere. Probably on a backup disk. If I find it I'll post it on the free games section of my web site, and let everyone know. If I can't find the original installer I'll recompile the original Giftinum source manually, and build a new installer for it. However, as I don't believe I still have a copy of Visual Basic 6 around I'll have to find one first. well there was a version released, by shaned games. But due to selfdestruct or something like that using some code from bpc or something or something it went down, maybe that was xlstudios. I forget but yeah shaned games went away in the same year it came up. There was supposed to be a load of extra things to it. Its weird how some stuff starts good then dies. Things like the genisus project was shelved by esp because of size alone. I wouldn't mind a compiled version of the last build even if its real crappy just to see what it would have been like. A shame that that never happened. then there was final defender by adora, starbase defender and flight commander. For various reasons these games were not completed. All these were real good. Then there was the orio games things where the makers of a game decided for whatever reason not to release it and after that not to have a company either. Then there was the alchemy preorder thing and the list goes on, well it doesn't but it could. Before that esp almost closed, and then was able to reopen, and the company that was there before adora was went closed for a bit. I think the only origional players we have now that never quit or had major issues are pcs, and gma. True there is draconis, usa, and vipgameszone as well as soundsupport and the audiogames sites but those came later. And before pcs there was ifarchive. And before that, well before that I didn't have the net, I think in 1993 1994 I was with a few games on floppies. and before that I had no computer at all. I think we should have a history article about audyssey in the mag, the communities, the small wars and such. The community reminds me of a email mud if one can exist. Another game that was part of the mag. Things like the genisus project was shelved by esp because of size alone. I wouldn't mind a compiled version of the last build even if its real crappy just to see what it would have been like. A shame that that never happened. then there was final defender by adora, starbase defender and flight commander. For various reasons these games were not completed. All these were real good. Then there was the orio games things where the makers of a game decided for whatever reason not to release it and after that not to have a company either. Then there was the alchemy preorder thing and the list goes on, well it doesn't but it could. Before that esp almost closed, and then was able to reopen, and the company that was there before adora was went closed for a bit. I think the only origional players we have now that never quit or had major issues are pcs, and gma. True there is draconis, usa, and vipgameszone as well as soundsupport and the audiogames sites but those came later. And before pcs there was ifarchive. And before that, well before that I didn't have the net, I think in 1993 1994 I was with a few games on floppies. and before that I had no computer at all. I think we should have a history article about audyssey in the mag, the communities, the small wars and such. The community reminds me of a email mud if one can exist. Another game that was part of the mag.
