Hi,
Fantastic news Thomas, early fall sounds good. The way you were talking, it
sounded like something that would not be available until Christmas.

Hi Alfredo,
Yes, I own USA Games Interactive, and am the lead software developer.
So pretty much anything that happens at USA Games is my doing.
Everyone else involved in the company are either testers, people who
handle sales/support, or the ocational software developer I ask to
help out with the code.
Anyway, as for when Mysteries of the Ancients 1.0 will be released I
don't have a specific date and time set. The best answer I can give is
that it will be released when it is ready to be released. Besides
adding the rest of the game levels I'm still awaiting some voice
acting to be finished by my voice actress, and need to purchase some
extra sounds. Developing a game this complex is quite a lot of work,
and could take a while to reach 1.0 although I should have it done by
early fall.

2010-06-12 Thread dark
yes, copying backups takes a while. i currently have about 130 gb of stuff
to backup each time onto my external drive which takes a good couple of
hours. However, what I usually do is set it running while I'm doing
something else like playing a game or watching a film, or else just leave my
pc on over night while it goes on.

pluss of course, you can set several folders going at once which speed
things up.

Generally though, having all my stuff safe is more than worth it, and as I
said, it's not really to bad because I don't have to sit around and watch it
backup.

Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store

2010-06-07 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Alfredo,

Well here is one of my sound effect folders on my external hard drive 39001
File(s) 30,291,133,789 bytes
And here is a folder of video game sounds
14345 File(s) 38,874,765,971 bytes
So besides multiple back ups, I use the external hard drives to store sound
files that I might some day use in making a game.

Yes, I write all of my games for Windows in VB6. I also know some simple HTML
code which is my web site except for the random sapi5 voice wav file that gets
played. My friend Joshua Griffith wrote the part that does that as well as the
part that displays the current date.

But I thought YOU did the backups...

Hi Alfredo,

I have a corner desk in the living room of my government subsidized apartment.
On the desk I have a game development computer and a Internet computer. I have
a couple of tera byte external hard drives and a couple of other external hard
drives as well as a Triple Talk USB hardware speech synthesizer, a steering
wheel with gas and brake peddle, a joystick and a game pad. There is a monitor
that is never turned on except for for company and a 20 year old 9 pin dot
matrix printer. So that is pretty much Kitchensinc. Oh yeah and a nice swivel
rocker chair that I bought some time ago. It is very comfortable.

I seem to remember that Liam said that he has a recording studio. Not sure
about what other game developers have for their work space.

True, true indeed. But you could have a 200 Gig hard drive that could be put

I oe my own external drive a lot, if I hadn't been careful about backups,
when my desktop exploded in mid 2008 it could've been a very major desaster
indeed, sinse as well as games, resources to do with games, music, audio
books and websites I'm interested in, I also rely on my computer for
everything to do with my phd, including writing it, keeping in touch with
the uni, and storing articals which i've had read onto my rowland.

Losing these would basically send years of work down the tubes!

I'd now never be without an external drive at all.

Yes, that sounds interesting. I know hat most software developers, like

are small companies on a web server. And what these external hard drives

Web coding, like JavaScript to randomize the sounds one your site, and
you use Visual Basic for your games?

My external drive sits in a box under my bed, and every few weeks I pull it

Thus, I can try anything with my pc I wish, don't have to worry as much

Not explode literally, simply the harddrive completely and utterly died to
the point where it made nasty noises when starting and the drive disk was
clearly not spinning correctly.

I don't really think it's a question about more popular among the
blind in fact to be honest I don't even think that's s an important
question, sinse it has no baring on access and is the same for anyone who
uses a computer, --- whether their blind, sited, physically disabled or
whatever else.

I'd just say using an external harddrive is good for anyone, and indeed most
of my tech minded friends do.

2010-06-06 Thread dark

mmm, space is really litle object with computers these days.

my harddrive is currently 500 gb, and I've filled barely 150. My external
drive (which i bought several years ago in 2005), is 236 gb, however
when it gets full i'll simply upgrade to something larger.

With drives up to two terrabite in size, really you don't need to
worry, pluss of course you can always have a second drive disk stuck in
a desktop.

the only mildly irritating thing is that my laptop bought in 2006 has only a
36 gb drive, but sinse most of the 150 gb I have is audio and music, I just
substitute what I need when I need it.

Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store

2010-06-06 Thread Muhammed Deniz
Sometimes, you don't have chances like that. Alfredo, if its really a bad
situation, yeah, a format. But the thing you need to remember is what type
of virus it is. If its a small virus, probably you wouldn't really have a
hard time getting it off your system. But if its a trojen, well what shall I
say, it would be a hard time backing it up. Sometimes you could use a back
up account or something, but if the situation is so so so bad that you
didn't have any choice, a reformat would really really help, so now do you
get my point on what I'm saying? That's why harddrives are inhandy. So for
an example. I had a memerry stick, but I had a really bad virus, but I had
alot of content which is about 200 gigs but my memeryy stick could hold
about 16 gigs. But I didn't have a hard drive. All I had is a memerry stick.
But when you also have a computer, well at least if you have another
computer, I shall say that you wouldn't really have a hard time backing up
things.

Hi Alfredo,
Yes, I own USA Games Interactive, and am the lead software developer.
Developing a game this complex is quite a lot of work,
and could take a while to reach 1.0 although I should have it done by
early fall.

2010-06-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Sure. I understand all that. I was just thinking the way it was
presented was nicely done and we could expand on that idea for game
developers in getting our games more out there so to speak.

On 6/6/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:
 Hi Tom.

I'd be very glad to put together a promo if you'd like certainly.

Bare in mind that the purpose of that podcast was essentially to display the
general possibilities of what more complex and interesting things were
possible in audio games to people who do not themselves play audio games,
not actually to review games with the intention of having people buy them.

It was the third in a series on gaming with a visual imparement (the first
two done by Barry ellis are very much worth checking out). The first two
generally focused on the inaccessibility of console games, so Barry asked me
for a look at three games which showed the possibilities of what interesting
and complex things could be done in an audio game.

hence my choice. Entombed, a complex rpg, time of conflict, a complex war
stratogy game with unique map overview, and Mota, an action adventure game
with puzle elements, multiple weapons and considderable audio plot and
 ambience.

Pluss, all these titles are recent, and thus show what is going on in audio
 games now!

As I said, rail racer and sound rts were deffinately other games I
 considdered as well.

So, the purpose wasn't really to review the games for people to go out and
buy them but to say hay look! audio games can be engaging too!

 Beware the grue!

well it almost happened with the system and the hard drive when it died.
ofcause using a laptop my external drive is used all the time since I
don't have space for everything.

I have a backup drive I use just for backing that one up and that works.
If all that turns to custard I have an old semi broken 250gb drive

a flash drive holds all my important tripe which is not much.

Yes, that sounds interesting. I know hat most software developers,
like APH and freedomScientific, they have big comanies and
offices. But hese are small companies on a web server. And what
these external hard drives and other equipment for? How does it
help in developing? One must know Web coding, like JavaScript to
randomize the sounds one your site, and you use Visual Basic for your games?

keeping a separate harddrive just for backups avoids any and all
misshaps from viruses to hardware failures to your computer being

My external drive sits in a box under my bed, and every few weeks I
pull it out, plug it in, and copy all the important stuff across,

Thus, I can try anything with my pc I wish, don't have to worry as

Hi Dark,
That's a good point. It might have been nicer to have given the
listeners a little better discussion of game controls, supported game
controllers, etc in the game reviews you did the other day, but as you
said on the podcast you were in something of a time crunch.
As it happens though I really like your style of doing game reviews.
If you don't mind once I finish up a few things in Mysteries of the
Ancients, look like I'm nearing a 1.0 release, I'd like you or
someone else to do a promo for the game I can put on my web site. Not
a trailer exactly, but an end users review of the game, and showing
off the game to other potential customers.

Smile.

So, I am becoming quie interested in sites like this one. X-sight interactive,
RSGames, BPCprograms, are those real companies with facilities, or is it a
virtual company that is on a server.
What kind of programming lanugage do you use for some games. I remember that
one of the members askied how you made it possible to have a demo, and how you
had to buy the software so you could pllay everything. I had hat same question,
but never asked it. But someone else asked it, and I already know.
Also, draconis Entertainment is taking a long time for them to reply to my
message. I do not want to buy something, and not register it. So, I wish I
could get some word, I already sent them one E-mail message.

Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store

2010-06-05 Thread dark

Hi Dark,
That's a good point.

Smile.

That's in fact why the link doesn't work, sinse I imagine it's stil pointing
to beta eleven, and sinse the beta files have numbers attached to their
names the link needs updating, but if Beta 13 is that close I might as
well wait to update it.

Note though, that there are always links to go to the games' individual
homepage on every game entry and it's possible to download from there.

Hi,
When downloading Mysteries of the Ancients you can always find it on my
web site

http://www.usagamesinteractive.com.
As it happens beta 12 is up there now, but I will be releasing beta 13
in about a week or so once i finish fixing a few things.

Certainly they are real developers and have all created games, in fact
bpc programs are doing most interesting things currently, and rs most recent
game, a version of monopoly which can be played online against human players
or even with bots, is a very good piece of work indeed.

I know all about that, and I do have monopoly, but I am curious to know if the
companies are virtual, meaning that there are no offices, no facilities, just a
site on a server, or what.
