Re: [Audyssey] Thinking about TOC and other sorts of strategy games -but sort of animal versions

I remember both worms and lemmings, having played both cooperatively with
friends who were pretty big fans of the game.

I'm not sure about the 2D interface, sinse it very much required lots of
overview, but something with an overview map in the manner of Toc I see
as eminantly possible, --- though i must confess if David does considder
using the Toc basics to create another game, my vote would be for something
like civilization, having all the war pluss developement of technology
over time, trading, resources and building, the research element of civ
always sounded fascinating to me, going literally from sticks and stones to
nuclear weapons and beyond.

Re: [Audyssey] Thinking about TOC and other sorts of strategy games-but sort of animal versions

2010-03-22 Thread Jacob Kruger
I call it 2D since while you didn't move directions like north, south east
and west, you did move up down, left and right.

Reason specifically liked things like worms is that they're more short
term/time games - so at the end of a session, it's done with and you can
start another one to play for around 20 minutes/30 minutes against various
other people, whereas if we, back then played things like warcraft,
starcraft, the MS age of empires games etc., we could in fact carry on for
hours, etc. etc.

Not a bad thing, but sometimes we just wanted to mess around for shorter
time periods, to waste a bit of time, and they sort of required less
concentration inbetween turns since while you kept track of what the other
were doing, you literally just waited until it was your turn again, so could
do something like go make coffee while the other people played, and then
come back, quickly scan what had happened, and then take your turn - very
informal LAN gaming.

Was also just thinking about less historical, and more simple entertainment
levels of content...smile

Here's a short version of the descriptive section of that page:
---start of content---
Worms is a series of turn-based computer games developed by British company
Team17 Software. Players control a small platoon of earthworms across a
deformable landscape, battling other computer- or player-controlled teams. The
games feature bright and humorous cartoon-style animation and a varied arsenal
of bizarre weapons.

The game, whose concept was devised by Andy Davidson,[1] was described by the
Amiga gaming press as a cross between Cannon Fodder and Lemmings.[2] It is
part of a wider genre of turn-based combat games in which each player controls
characters who duel with projectile weapons; similar games include Scorched
Earth and Gorilla.
---end of content---

This was specifically for sighted guys, and it also had a bunch of funny sound
options like choosing different languages/vocabularies you could let your team
make use of for comments, instructions etc., but you basically navigated your
teams worms around the 2D environment, sometimes making use of either parts of
the environment, or certain bits of equipment like rocket packs, grappling
hook ropes etc., and then let them make use of whatever weapons they had/found
to attack the other teams members/environment pieces etc. to try obliterate
everyone except your team, and I think you could have up to around 6 teams
taking part in a session, and there were lots of different
environments/stageing areas as well, along with different pieces of
equipment/weaponry.

This was generally turn based, I think either with a sort of time limit, or
with limiting each turn to a certain amount of activity, as in move so far
before carrying out a form of attack, and the weapons ranged from manual
weapons to missile weapons, to some other stranger ones that came straight out
of sci fi novels/cartoon serieses etc.

Anyway, after looking into/trying out time of conflict, was just thinking
about sort of real time strategy games based on alternative scenarios, like
animals/monsters, and wondering if anyone had considered/looked into something
like this ever...?
