Absolutely Che!
while big and complex game creation tools are certainly a good thing, a lot
can be said for something players can just pick up and create extra game
content with, ---- look at the amount of golf Courses Jim's got for his free
golf game, ---- as another example besides rail racer for how successful
this can be.
the puzle game emerald mine on the amigar had over 70 thousand levels made
for it!
It got so well known that what started as just an add on game editer to
monkey about with creating levels and random elements got people into
programming, ---- as the developers were asked to add features like altering
the time required for each level, speed of the various objects, ----- even
eventually allowing players the ability to create their own emerald mine
style games with the editer by having the ability to load custome graphics
and sounds created by the players.
yet, this was just a level editer!
Imho in a small industry like audio games, where comparatively few people
can actually write games, ---- level editers are a fantastic way of
essentially letting the players expand upon the developer's work for them.
if for instance you'd released rail racer with hard coded tracks, ----
people would be clammering for an rr 2 with this or that track added, ----
thus having the track editer saves you not only work on the first game, ---
but the necessity to simply create a second game with essentially the same
mechanics but more levels like the first, ---- as has frequently happened
with game series.
Thus if you do ever release an rr2, --- you'll have time and leasure to make
it vastly different from the first game, ---- not simply rehash what's
already there.
Beware the Grue!
Dark.

Subject: [Audyssey] level editors, was :RE: Q9 and mods
Hi all,
I can say from my experience with rail racer, having level editors is
something the players really latch onto.
The best tracks available for rail racer have been created by players,
and
some of them used the track creation tools in ways I hadn't even thought
of
when I was programming the game.
Other than the online racing aspect of rail racer, I thing the track
editor and all the amazing courses that have come from users is the
coolest
part of the game.
On top of that, if I had hard coded all the tracks, I would have really
limited myself, or at the least wasted vast amounts of time making tracks.
So bottom line, I would highly recommend making yourself a level editor
that is accessible to all right out of the box, it will greatly enhance
your
game down the line and increase the replay value significantly.
Later
Che
