Re: [Audyssey] question about placement of walls in castaways

2011-10-11 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Alex, your proposed wall configuration would definitely protect the survivor
camp.

Try not to think about the direction the walls face, since they really don't
work like that. They completely protect the tile they are on, making it
impassable for enemies. Stones, trees, and water are also completely
impassable so walls can be used to compliment them. If your base has a long
stretch of forest to its left, that is exactly the same as if each of those
tiles were a wall instead of trees. In both situations, enemies are forced to
walk around rather than traveling through to attack your buildings. I hope
this helps, and I know that the way walls work has been confusing for a lot of
people.

 hi list.
I am just wondering, how does the placement of walls work
 in castaways?
do walls always have to be built between things so for
example two bits of forest or two rocky fields, is building
the wall between two objects what determines what direction
 the wall is facing?
so for example, in mission 5 I am putting walls round my
survivor camp, are these walls going to form a square to
 seal the camp in.
 so for example,
my survivor camp is at g9,
 and I am placing walls at g8, f9, h9, and g10.

Re: [Audyssey] question about placement of walls in castaways

2011-10-11 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Here are some notes re: walls. Note that I am not referring to a specific
map for this message, but will describe hypothetical situations.

The first thing to know about walls is actually not about walls, but the way
enemies move. They move sideways and up and down, not diagonally. This has
large implications.

Consider for example a square: E5 for example. There are trees at D4 and
F6. Putting a wall at E5 effectively closes this gap, since an enemy at E4
cannot move directly to D5, but has to either go to D4 (blocked by trees) or
E5 (blocked by your shiny new wall.

Now, if instead of D4, your left trees are at D5, you can block at E5 or E6,
depending on where you want the extra space. Again the enemy's inability to
move diagonally works in your favor.

So, when looking for good wall placements, be sure to check the terrain for
places where rocks or trees are any configuration of two squares apart,
since any such gap can be closed with one properly placed wall. Some
examples follow:
D4 and F6: build at E5
D4 and E6, build at D5 or E5.
E4 and D6: build at D5 or E5.
D5 and F4: build at E4 or E5.
D6 and F4: build at E5.

There are other combinations, but you see the pattern.

On the larger scale, look for large patches of trees and rocks, and then
look for areas around their edges that come within two or maybe three
squares of another such patch. These are the efficient choke points to put
walls for the minimal time and cost. Conversely, it is very inefficient to
just string long rows of walls together, say to cover a gap between J9 and
M9.

One final note, water also acts as a barrier. In the default map of mission
3, there's a lovely inland see in the M through P files that you can use to
anchor one side of a defensive perimeter to protect yourself from the north.

Hopefully, this clears up the confusion about walls. If there are any
questions, ask.

Christopher Bartlett
