this as you mention before is another on the wire incompatibility that will
most likely need additional fixes.

I agree, a way to do it in a compatible way for 3.0 and 3.1 at least is the
tricky part.

At the least it will require gmetad to be upgraded first in a migration to
3.1, and it might even require a backport to 3.0 to easy the migration.
