Police attacked peaceful protesters in South Africa
Cape Town,

Red Hispana de Derechos Humanos.-

40 people were hurt and 10 injured with firearms as a result of the attack
against unarmed protesters that were demanding HIV/AIDS treatment in this
city.

According to TAC spokespersons, the protest was organized after more than
six months of negotiations with provincial and local health authorities,
taking into account that they have denied access to information about the
number of people who have had lab tests and who have received treatment.

In addition, health centers were asked not to accept new patients for
antiretroviral treatments since

December last year. TAC found out that 52 people get treatment at the
Nomzano clinic, but 3 died becausethey started treatment too late. Another
51 persons, who were on the treatment waiting list, also died.

TAC has been trying to negotiate and get access to information and treatment
since April of this year, but local authorities have referred them to their
provincial counterparts.

The requests

To deal with the situation, TAC asks the government to implement an ARV
treatment and therapy extension plan. As well as carry out treatment
education and community mobilization programs.

On July 26 TAC organized a massive demonstration to protest HIV related
unnecessary deaths due to lack of treatment, and against the police
