Does anyone on this list know Babak Jabbari, the Iranian student who
allegedly set himself on fire and is now in Breach Candy hospital in
a dangerous condition. I don't know him myself, but he was gay and
several people know him from parties.

I don't know how this story is going to play out - though it does
look like the gay angle is going to come out - but if anyone has any
information that might indicate why he did it, if it was a suicide
attempt, or who might have done it, if it was an assault.

For the record, I'm a journalist, though I'm not covering the story,
though I know people who are. I just want to make sure (a) if it was
an assault, perhaps gay related, then the police get whatever
information they need and (b) in the absence of other information,
the police or the more irresponsible media don't go to town and make
a Pushkin of this sad case.

So if you have information, please mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED],

Nobel laureate's interpreter sets himself afire

Cause is a mystery. Iranian Babak Jabbari is Xavier's student

Prachi Jatania

Mumbai, June 7: WITH 75 per cent burns, Babak Jabbari, Nobel Peace
prize winner Shirin Ebadi's interpreter in Mumbai, may not survive.

On a ventilator, struggling for life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
at Breach Candy Hospital, Jabbari was admitted late on Monday night
after he allegedly tried to immolate himself.

According to the Gamdevi police, the 25-year-old Iranian national now
unconscious set himself ablaze after an argument with close friend Dr
Shabnam Kadri at Kadri's residence.

``We are yet to take Jabbari's statement, so details aren't clear.
Prima facie, it appears it's a suicide attempt,'' Deputy Commissioner
of Police (Zone II) Pradeep Dighavkar told Newsline.

Jabbari, a student of Islamic religion at St Xavier's College,
graduated with a first class this year.

The shy multi-linguist—he can speak French, Persian (Farsi) and Urdu—
accompanied Ebadi (56) at various events during the World Social
Forum in January last year.

Besides authoring papers on religion, sexuality and freedom, he also
assisted the Iran Culture House on research topics.

Meanwhile, the Consulate of Iran didn't divulge information on the
Teheran native. ``He's a student here and he's been injured. That's
all we know,'' said a consulate official, refusing to be named.

As the police wait for Jabbari to regain consciousness, doctors at
the hospital suspect some foul play. ``He was assaulted on his back
and it doesn't appear to be self-immolation,'' said the ICU doctor on
duty.

Officials at the Iran Culture House said his family in Teheran had
been been informed. ``He's an intelligent boy,'' said Yusuf Ali,
director of the Iran Culture House, Charni Road.

``He was a young boy, alone in the city. We always asked him if he
was in trouble,'' said Ali.
