Pushkin Chandra, one of the victims of the Anandlok double homicides, seems to have led a dangerous other life, say investigators. By day, he was a development officer with USAID; after work, though his world was very different.

Then, Pushkin hooked onto a network of strangers who emerged from the shadows of lanes and parks. People who seemed to have nothing in common with the well-to-do, MBA-holding professional but their sexual orientation.

At the centre of the murder mystery are three of Pushkin's "new friends". All of them accompanied him to an upscale party the night before the murder. Two seem to have disappeared. The third, Vishal, was killed along with Pushkin. But bar his name, there's very little the police have on the dead man.

Except that he fit a profile. The police found none of Vishal's clothes in the room — he was wearing a pair of Pushkin's Bermudas. But they found a pair of tattered unbranded shoes in the room that belonged to him. Vishal, it appeared, was one of those men Pushkin was in the habit of picking up from gay hangouts like Nehru Park or Sanjay Park or Sangam cinema. Several polaroid photographs of such men — either in the nude, or engaged in sexual acts — were found at the crime scene.

Pushkin's friends in the NGO circuit knew about — and disapproved of — his habit of picking up prostitutes and smuggling them into his house or taking them to parties.

In the present instance, Pushkin and his friends had gatecrashed into a party thrown by Danish national Uffe Garten. They left at four in the morning. A few hours after that Pushkin and Vishal were dead.

=====================

Police are piecing together clues and evidence, including  photographs seized from slain Pushkin Chandra’s outhouse, to zero in on two unidentified men who had accompanied Chandra and his partner to a party late on Friday night.

Sleuths probing the murders of  38-year-old Chandra, who worked for USAID, and Vishal, said the two men held the key to the killings that rocked the Capital on Saturday. Most of the photographs found from Pushkin’s pad belonged to homosexuals like him.

The theory gaining ground is that the murders were a “crime of passion”, which have brought to the fore the murky affairs of same sex relationships in the Capital.

Pushkin’s friends who attended the party told police that they saw the duo for the first time that night. South district police have rounded up several male prostitutes to find more about Vishal, who was killed along with Chandra. Police are also trying to locate Chandra’s car.

It is still not clear how Pushkin and Vishal returned home, for there is no entry of the Opel Corsa coming back in register kept at the colony's gate.

Gay community grows in city
Chetan Chauhan
New Delhi, August 16
Homosexuality is on the rise in Delhi and so is the incidence of sexually-transmitted diseases, including AIDS.

According to the estimates of the Delhi State AIDS Control Society (DSACS), from about 4,000 a few years ago, the number of homosexuals was estimated to be over 7,000 in 2003. DSACS director Arun Bhoraka said many of them are from the higher income group and come regularly to the society's 17 voluntary counselling centres for testing. “Often they came after unsafe sex and we counsel them about HIV/AIDS,” he said. In 2003 survey, the society identified 117 places in the Capital, from where male homosexuals operate.

High concentrations of homosexuals were found around Delhi University, Patparganj, Mayur Vihar, Anand Parbat, Punjabi Bagh, Amar Colony and several other places.

Officials said farmhouses in south Delhi and the NCR satellite townships were thriving spots for gay parties.

A possible reason for their number going up in Delhi is the easy availability of a male partner.

The survey found that the city’s 35,000 street children made easy prey.
