Cops play party poopers in Mumbai Prachi Jatania CNN-IBN Updated 1752 hrs IST (+GMT 5:30), 03.02.06 Email Print Mumbai: The city's party hoppers had an early night on Thursday as the Mumbai Police conducted surprise visits across discos and nightclubs in the upmarket western suburbs.
They came, they saw and ensured that the music stopped hours before midnight. The police also ordered several prominent nightclubs and lounge bars to shut down earlier than the permitted deadline. "The police came in at 2230 hours IST and closed down this place. There was no complaint," a security guard Vinod Mishra said. The local police downplayed these night-rounds as part of the routine but sources said that it was an exercise to check licenses. However, no arrests were made even as teams of policemen in plainclothes forcibly entered lounge bars in upmarket Bandra and Khar. The nightclubs had to close down three hours before midnight and questions are being raised if this was an attempt to clamp down on the city's active nightlife. So this weekend, perhaps it is a better idea for Mumbaikars to stay at home than chance an encounter with the keepers of the law.
