How is this a regression? In fact this seems to be fixed on the trunk and
instead the 4.3 branch and earlier releases suffer from memory/compile-time
explosion during inlining.

Steve, if I knew how to fix this, I would have done so by now. I plan to
remove st43 and st44 in 4.5, this was merely a bandaid for the ABI breakage.

On a related note: The following snippet from PR36426 produces an ICE.
