and LTO silently does nothing.
Huh? gold is not required for lto to work.

Yup, another mistake. The gold build fails. The version of g++ I'm using to
compile gold is too old (3.4.3 from the solaris distribution). I'll go try to
make a newer one.
g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I.
