Unfortunately, such a failure might happen also with a bad
kernel, an ill-configured glibc or a linker problem. This
report shows nothing about any compiler problem and other
folks successfully used shared

When this bug was reported I had these issues, it later turned out to be due to
glibc. All versions after 2.3.3 (in other words 2.3.4 -) works perfectly fine.
