It's clear that the problem was undefined behaviour in 4.7.2, not a wrong-code error in 4.8+.

I'm getting loads of errors from glibc stating that malloc detects memory corruption in cc1.

Your archlinux system compiler is presumably somewhat modified; can you try again with an FSF 4.8.1? Also please make sure the 4.7.2 you're building is unmodified.
