Looks like I missed the in-place band number selection flag ( -b ).
Does anyone know if I can direct output to another file, or do
I always need to copy the original file and 'burn' the values into an
existing duplicate file.

I'm trying to import add a kml layer into geoserver, i found how to import
a shapefile but not a kml file;

Just to inform you that we have spotted a regression in 1.9.2 : ogrinfo (and
any code using OGRGeometryTypeToName()) will report 3D geometry types for 2D
layers, and vice versa. See http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/4871
