So, I just installed Visual Studio 2008 and found that it actually supports variadic macros, so we could in theory compile M5 using it. It's also my understanding that there is a free compiler only version of visual studio 2008 that we could use. Seems to me that we should target that eventually and drop cygwin since it sucks.
