As far as location, I agree src is the wrong place... how about under util,
like util/scons or util/sconshelp?
As far as everything else: to me the unifying theme is that somehow you have
to associate a build directory with its compile-time options, whether that's
the ISA or something more minor.

OK, maybe I spoke too soon... zizzer is running ubuntu hardy, and the scons
package there is at 0.97. Should I whack the ubuntu package and install
from scons.org, or is there a reasonable way to backport the 0.98 package
from intrepid? If someone else wants to handle this I'd be glad to let
I'll look at it, but it does raise the concern that everything but the
latest releases of OSes will need a custom package to get to Scons .

get a compliant SCons.

That also doesn't seem to fit for me, but if a top level directory is
the wrong place, util is the best. I still think I like buildlib at
the top better,
