Thank you very much for voting, I have sent out the result.[1]
I think it's best to remove or replace those images, I have summarized all
license issues on GitHub to track and resolve before next release.[2]

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache MXNet (incubating) version 1.5.0.rc2

2019-07-18 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

+1 (binding) However note the image issues below, I'll leave it up to the
project if they think it's OK to distribute these files or want to create a new
release.

I checked:
- includbatibng in name
- signature and hashes correct
- NOTICE copyright don’t include current year ("2017 and onwards” should be
"2017-2019")
- Several minor license issues in LICENSE (see previous emails)
- No unexpected binary files
- All ASF files have ASF headers
- Didn’t compile from source

There are a couple of images in the source distribution that are not mentioned
in license:
1. ./contrib/clojure-package/examples/infer/objectdetector/images/marcel.jpg
2. ./contrib/clojure-package/test/test-images/Pug-Cookie.jpg
3. ./contrib/clojure-package/test/test-images/kitten.jpg
4. ./julia/examples/imagenet/ijulia-pretrained-predict/cat.png

Have the license of these images been confirmed and/or do you have permission
from the owners to use/distribute them? If so it would be good to add those
details to LICENSE. If not it may be best to replace those images with one of a
known license compatible with ALv2 license.

From a quick search 1 looks to be a personal photo, 2 seems to be a stock
photo, (but I cannot find its license), 3 has "Copyright by MaxPixel” as meta
data (also unknown license), and 4 seem to be stock photos of unknown license.

Re 3, what I found about MaxPixel doesn’t sound good. [1] It seems they may of
stole the image from here. [2]

Does the project want to distribute an image that may of been stolen from
another site and copyright incorrectly claimed for it?

Thanks,
Justin

[VOTE] Apache Tuweni 0.8.1

2019-07-18 Thread Antoine Toulme
Hi all,
The Tuweni community voted on and has approved a proposal to release Tuweni
0.8.1.

This release includes the following changes:
* Exclude gradle wrapper jar from source distribution
* Remove binary jar file from testing resources, recreating on the fly instead
* Adding a stage task to automate staging releases

We are now bringing this proposal to the attention of the incubator PMC for a
vote.
We have one +1 IPMC vote.

This vote will be open for no less than 72 hours.

Thanks
Antoine

Dear IPMC members,

Thank you for all the help in spotting the license issues. Given that they are
relatively minor we would like to address them in the next release.

Since there is no longer any blocker, it would be great if you could continue
to vote on this release. We still need one more vote to make this release.
Thank you.

Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache Druid (incubating) as a TLP

2019-07-18 Thread Gian Merlino
Hey Justin,

Thanks for your comments.

The other repos under https://github.com/druid-io contain projects loosely
affiliated with Apache Druid but that are not seen as part of the core
project. Some of them have ongoing discussions about whether the community
wants to migrate them to Apache (as sub projects, maybe, or as part of
Apache Druid proper) or perhaps sunset them. I expect these conversations
to continue after graduation.

On the topic of branding, the PPMC is definitely aware of its
responsibilities in that area. Internally we have updated our own project
site branding, and externally we've reached out in a few cases already to
ask for the Apache Druid name to be used correctly and to clarify the
independent nature of the project. We hadn't reached out before about the
two specific documents you mentioned, but I just did a few minutes ago.

On the topic of committers and PPMC members, from my POV the reason for
adding a bunch of committers at once was that once we started thinking
about adding more, a variety of names came up at once. I think in the
future we’ll likely invite additional people in a more typical manner.
We’ve recently invited all active committers to join the initial PMC slate,
and I expect we’d continue a policy of having an inclusive PMC.

Your point on committer merit as it relates to noncode contributions is
noted. It is something that we should keep an open mind on.

Agreed. I think some of the conversation on that thread was likely polarizing

was self-justified as being "ham-handed" or not).

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache MXNet (incubating) version 1.5.0.rc2

2019-07-18 Thread Duane Merrill
Hi,
I'm the author of CUB, and in particular, [9] (half.h) below.
>> but what about the last one [9]?
The boilerplate no-redistribution license at top of half.h was an oversight; it
should read the same as the BSD-style headers for the rest of CUB's source
files. (It was cribbed from an internal project to facilitate regression
testing, and isn't part of the core library. I simply forgot to update the
header when adding regression tests for that data type type.)
I've updated the source for half.h in CUB's master branch (see
https://github.com/NVlabs/cub/blob/master/test/half.h). However, it would be
several days before I could qualify and tag a new release version (v1.8.1) of
CUB. Further, there are several other aspects of "master" that are ahead of
the current v1.8.0 branch, which might impact your own release qualification
process. Let me know if snapping a new release would be a priority for you.
Happy to help,
Duane

That sounds good to me (the general idea at least).

[VOTE][LAZY] the Incubator as a service provider for podlings (was: overzealous bureaucracy...)

2019-07-18 Thread Bertrand Delacretaz
Hi,

As discussed in the "overzealous bureaucracy" thread, I suggest
changing the text on the http://incubator.apache.org/ homepage to
present the Incubator as a service provider for podlings.

I think the current description can be understood as the Incubator
being a"stern gatekeeper to the ASF" and that's not good.

Defining the Incubator a service provider will give us a documented
basis to adapt our tone and processes if we (or podlings) notice that
we're being a stern gatekeeper again, as has happened in the past.

If people agree with the general idea we can discuss the details of
the new text at https://github.com/apache/incubator/pull/12 if needed.

I suggest using this thread more to discuss (and hopefully approve ;-)
the general idea of this change.

I'm planning to merge #12 in the next few days unless someone from the
Incubator PMC objects.

[GitHub] [incubator] bdelacretaz opened a new pull request #12: Rework the homepage as discussed in 'overzealous bureaucracy' thread

2019-07-18 Thread GitBox
bdelacretaz opened a new pull request #12: Rework the homepage as discussed in
'overzealous bureaucracy' thread
URL: https://github.com/apache/incubator/pull/12

I have reworked the homepage to express the Incubator's mission as providing
services to podlings, as opposed to the current text which describes it more as
a "stern gatekeeper to the ASF".

I'll ask for general agreement about this change on the general@ list and we
can discuss details about the proposed text here if needed.
