[VOTE] Heron Release 0.20.3-incubating Release Candidate 9

2021-01-06 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi,

The Apache Heron community has voted and approved the proposal to release
Apache Heron (Incubating) version 0.20.3-rc9. We are missing votes
from mentors on the project as we only have one mentor at the moment.
The year on the NOTICE file is 2020 because this release was cut in
December of 2020. We request the Incubator PMC members to review and
vote on this incubator release.

The results of the Release Candidate 8 votes are below:

This is a call for a vote to the 9th release candidate for Apache Heron,
version 0.20.3-incubating.
We request project mentors (binded) as well as all contributors (unbinded)
and users to review and vote on this incubator release.

Re: [VOTE] Heron Release 0.20.3-incubating Release Candidate 9

2021-01-10 Thread Josh Fischer
Justin,

Thanks for the info and vote. I've reverted the change that published the
0.20.3-incubating-rc9 docs. Moving forward I'll add some quick instructions
to the vote message to how to build the source code. The empty BUILD file
is a requirement of Bazel, the build tool we use for Heron.

I'll also make sure to address your concerns about the docs that are
published that point users to unreleased code.

We only need one more vote if any one has the time!

2021-01-11 Thread Josh Fischer
This isn’t a release page, only a page to select a specific version of the
documentation. The section that points to GitHub is only a link to the repo.

With the full release of this version we will be putting out an download
page. I understand your concern, but I think it’s out of context of this
page.

[ANNOUNCE] Heron 0.20.4-incubating Release

2021-05-26 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi All,

We are pleased to announce the release of Apache Heron 0.20.4-incubating.

The release is available at:
https://heron.apache.org/download

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this release. Release
notes can be found here:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-heron/releases

This is the first release of Heron that has convenience binaries
distributed while incubating at the Apache Foundation. I am extremely
proud of what the community has come together to produce.

Convenience binaries include:

- An official Apache Heron Docker Image
- Maven Artifacts
- Install scripts for the following OS:
  - Debian10
  - CentOS7
  - Ubuntu 18.04

On behalf of the Heron team,

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Heron 0.20.4-incubating Release

2021-05-27 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi Xun Liu,

Thank you for your question. I've realized that using the term install
scripts can be misleading. The install scripts contain the binary
packages for each platform. So heron-install-0.20.4-incubating-centos7.sh
contains the contents of the CentOS7 specific binary for Heron. This is the
same for Debian10 and Ubuntu18.04 install scripts. They are

So if you want to install Heron for any of the above platforms all you need
to do is download the install script for the OS of your choice and execute
it as below:

$ chmod +x heron-install-0.20.4-incubating-{platform}.sh
$ ./heron-install-0.20.4-incubating-{platform}.sh --user

The debian10 binary tar.gz file is there if someone wants to manually
install Heron for Debian10. This would be more of a custom use case
approach. You will not need to compile Heron for CentOS7 or Ubuntu18.04
unless you want to do a manual and custom installation. The install
scripts are just a helper to self extract Heron onto your machine for you.

I've also corrected the use-at-herondotapachedotorg. email to prevent any
bounce issues.

Thank you for your interest, I'm happy to help with whatever you need along
the way.

Re: Question - are the confluence diffs readable for the Incubator report?

2022-05-09 Thread Josh Fischer
I agree that the diffs are rather large sometimes, and it's often
challenging to see what has changed. The notifications of someone
modifying the report are nice, but the unsummarized diffs that are
generated are a bit pointless. Do you know of a way to make them more
readable?

+ 1 Julian. I appreciate this.

I'm on one of these projects (Heron) that has been in the incubator for far
too long. I think where Heron fell short in its journey was the steep
learning curve it takes to build, maintain, and use Heron which caused our
community to dwindle over time. So in Heron's case, I don't feel it's
anything that happened in the incubator. It's mainly the complexity of
maintenance.

[DISCUSS] Retire Heron Podling

2022-12-16 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi All,

After several attempts, we are struggling to sustain the Heron podling: the
activity is pretty low, and even after a couple of calls for action,
we don't have a clear sign of community around Heron.

I would like to discuss/propose to retire the Heron podling.

Thoughts ?

Re: [VOTE] Apache Tuweni graduation

2022-12-19 Thread Josh Fischer
To build on what Dave is saying (from my experience at least) is projects
will enter the incubator and they tend to focus on building new features on
top of new features. Instead of focusing on how they can transfer that deep
knowledge of the system to anyone who is willing to learn.

Getting those people to feel comfortable stepping up can be a challenge.
Making new comers (whoever they are) feel welcome to ask questions and
contribute on mailing list discussion, prs, code contributions, etc is the
most important part of building a self-sustaining community.

I’ll get off my soapbox now.

[VOTE] Retire Heron from the Incubator

2023-01-12 Thread Josh Fischer
I think it's time to retire Heron from the incubator. Activity has been
close to non-existent on the mailing list. Also [1] after sending out a
[VOTE] several voted +1 to retire the project.

The vote is by lazy consensus and runs for 72 hours.

+1 [ ] Retire Heron from the Incubator
-1 [ ] Do not retire Heron from the Incubator

Here is my vote:
+1 [x] Retire Heron from the Incubator

[RESULT] Retire Heron from the Incubator

2023-01-18 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi,

The vote with lazy consensus passes with no objections to retire Heron the
incubator.

+1’s to retire:

- Dave Fisher (binding)
- Josh Fischer (non-binding)

It’s been quite a journey learning the Apache way with the rest of the
community. Thank you to all who helped along the way.

I haven’t gone through the game in detail yet, but I think it’s an
interesting approach to getting people to understand the ways of the Apache
foundation and incubator.

My favorite part of the game is when you keep clicking on “work on the
code” and the months pass by with no releases or new committers.

Good thinking and +1 to you, Justin.

Hi all,

We have one binding vote so far. Does anyone have the time to vote on this

Re: [VOTE] Heron 0.20.2-incubating Release Candidate 1

2019-11-14 Thread Josh Fischer
Thanks for sending Furkan. Bazel has an aggressive release schedule with
breaking changes between versions. Bazel recently jumped from ~.0.2x.x to
version 1.x that offers stability for up to 3 months at a time. The
build rules specified for version 0.26.0 are not compatible with 1.1.0. We
have some work to catch up with the most recent Bazel version. Thank you
for taking the time to vote. I will make sure to clarify the build
instructions on the next release.

Re: Podling announcement messages

2020-02-26 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi,

I'm not sure I follow. What value is added by creating the download page
earlier as opposed to just sending out the direct download link via email?
It seems like it could be more work swapping out those artifact URLs in
the release download page in the beginning. If the release candidate didn't
pass it's just a little more work to be done for the next RC vote.I'm
still learning the ropes here, so I'm most likely just out of the loop.

Re: Podling Roll Calls for Security Issues

2020-04-03 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi,

I think this is a step in the right direction to gauge responsiveness of a
project's PPMC for reporting and non-reporting projects. I say reporting
and non-reporting as it really only takes one person to fill out a report.
I think the more important issue to address is when podlings cannot get
votes passed on critical issues like security reports.

Re: [DISCUSS] New builds server and who should access

2020-07-28 Thread Josh Fischer
1.) I agree

2.) Why just IPMC members? Seems it could be helpful/empowering to allow
committers access to this folder to help when they want to/can. I can
also see that opening this folder up to all incubator committers increases
the possibility of error.

incubator release.

Re: [DISCUSS] Podling Mentor Count

2020-12-06 Thread Josh Fischer
In response to "C"

> (C) We need to not chase away mentors so that podlings end up with ZERO
or ONE mentor. We need to find replacements and if we can’t we must retire
such podlings since we are not supporting them.

Heron may have 4 mentors listed, but we only have one active (Dave
Fisher). Is it possible to correct this number to the count of active
mentors to reflect that podilings are in need of assistance?

I'd be willing to help mentor a podling. I still have much to learn, but
if help is needed I am willing to lend a hand.
