In Tomcat the committers agree on a release date the corresponding code
is tagged binaries and source packages are prepared and made available
for download.

People are asked to vote:
For example, the x.y.z tag is:
[ ] Broken

After the vote the release is announced. (Normally Stable is what we
want to reach and announce).

 If this process is streamlined enough, it means feedback can be
extracted
 from people more often and issues discovered earlier.

 I know this isn't how things are done ATM with jakarta, but it's worth
 thinking about.

I have been making regular nightly builds available, however it was
only when I created a formal build and called for a vote that various
issues surfaced.

So yes, it could be useful in future.

Do these quality check builds have to be tagged in SVN?
Or can they just be built from the current code line?

Getting JVM version

I have tried java -version but that seems to return weird strings.
Reading java.version via System.getProperties looks better.

 Try to load a class and catch the ClassNotFoundException - properties
 have not been reliable so far. But then again be careful with the
 class you chose, Kaffe will include ThreadLocal (and therefore look
 like 1.2) but doesn't include Swing for example.

Something like the following to check that it is at least 1.3:
+++
import java.util.Timer;
public class Version {
   static public void main(String[] args) {
 try {
   Timer time = new Timer();
   time.cancel();
 }
 catch (Exception ex) {
 System.out.println(Exception  + ex );
 ex.printStackTrace();
 }
   }
}

[Fwd: ApacheCon news]

---BeginMessage---

Greetings! This message is being sent to several of the Apache
mailing lists in order to reach the broadest possible audience
of people interested in the Apache packages. Future messages
will be almost entirely confined to the (low-volume) ApacheCon
announcement list, though, so if you want to *stay* informed,
subscribe to it by sending an empty message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED].

Please read BOTH of the following paragraphs..

I have good news! The Apache Software Foundation has completed
the search for a conference management company for the ApacheCon
shows, and we are getting back on track right now. More information
will be forthcoming, but here's a quick point that may be of interest
grin: Registration for the next ApacheCon will be well under US$1,000!

We need some feedback from you: If we hold the next ApacheCon at the
beginning of August 2002, in Las Vegas, Nevada, do you think you'll
attend?

We're asking because we're looking at the first full week of August,
which would allow us to have ApacheCon right after the BlackHat and
Def Con computer security conferences (URL:http://www.blackhat.com/
and URL:http://www.defcon.org/), also in Las Vegas around the same
time. However, the USENIX Security conference in San Francisco is
also happening then, the O'Reilly open-source convention is in San
Diego in July, and LinuxWorld is in San Francisco in the middle of
August. No matter where you look, the event schedule is crowded.

So, with all those conferences so close together, would you come
to ApacheCon? We don't want to pick a date and venue and then
not have enough people able to attend!

Please let us know by replying to [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Stay tuned, and thanks for your support and patience!
