If there is interest, I can create a new list.

Exactly. We can also define extensibility (through namespaces?) so that
projects with needs beyond a core vocabulary can easily be accomodated.

+1

Where would be the best place to have a discussion of formalising the project
definition?
(as opposed to the general list?)

If there was a common project definition then there would be no hassle in adopting
centipede or maven.
And you'd get gump by default.

I find the diagram @
http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/javadocs/org/apache/poi/hssf/record/uml-Record.html

to be way too detailed to be very useful. Is there another way to generate
them without the detail on methods/fields etc?

It is obvious. If not for the egos in the way. +1 for centaven +1 for
collaboration +1 for nonpartisan sensibility +1 for suiting ALL of POI's
needs (served only partly by maven or centipede)but read my tagline
again ;-)

I'm not sure that's possible. From my limited understanding of both
projects, Centipede puts project build functionality into the descriptor,
e.g. (right, Nicola??), whereas Maven is keeping the build
functionality separate from the project descriptor, and placing them in
'pluggable' ant resources (build files, properties files etc).

So with Centipede, you declare you're using forrest. With Maven, you don't.
You could just run the maven:forrest target, if it existed, and the forrest
plugin would understand what that means.

If it is obvious, then don't be shy.

More history. Once upon a time, Gump descriptors were project centric.
Witness:

http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs/jakarta-alexandria/proposal/gump/project/Attic/jakarta-turbine-2.xml?rev=1.3&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup

Then, Jason decided to normalize them

http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs/jakarta-alexandria/proposal/gump/project/Attic/jakarta-turbine-2.xml?rev=1.4&content-type=text/vnd.viewcvs-markup

Centipede opted to build upon this work. I really would like to converge
the efforts, if even only on the project definition syntax.

Re: [PROPOSAL] Centaven and Friends blah blah blah

2002-05-01 Thread James Taylor

> What do you think?

I think that the sanest viewpoint that has been expressed in this thread
is that both projects are young and need to incubate. Sure, one project
definition format will be nice to have across apache someday, but were
still working out the kinks and it's not obvious (well, except to us
developers =) which is the better way to go.

So, PROPOSAL, if you will... let's stop talking about this and get back
to work and then readdress the issue when the projects are more mature.
Both certainly need more effort.

In mavens case: http://jakarta.apache.org/turbine/maven/tasks.html short
term and http://jakarta.apache.org/turbine/maven/musings.html long term.
I haven't seen anything similar for centipede but I hope documentation
is at the top of that list because... I haven't seen anything similar.
Looking forward to seeing the UML generation, happy to steal that if it
turns out well.
