Where are the KD4.2 sets? I thought they'd be included when I did an
emerge --sync by now. Do I still need to download them manually? Where
can I get them? I'm dying to get my hands on 4.2.

if you just want kde 4.2 - the kde-meta-4.2 ebuild
What I did yesterday to get KDE 4.2 running:
1 - Log out - KDE / Log in - Fluxbox
2 - Remove all KDE stuff:
for p in /var/db/pkg/kde-base/*; do echo $p|sed -e 's#.*/#=#'|xargs
emerge -C; done
3- Run autounmask 2 or 3 times:
autounmask =kde-base/kde-meta-4.2.0
4- Emerge KDE:
emerge -v
